Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 CBA Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Short stature, small legs. Thin, likely shorter than listed 6'0" height. Likely also ten or so pounds heavier than his listed 165. Impressive athlete that will put in the work and study film.

Delivery & Mechanics: High effort delivery that Jameson repeats well. Starts squared to home plate, comes set high. The arm and hips do most of the work here, as he does a tremendous job incorporating his lower half and drives directly over plant leg. Double-plus arm speed. Has tightened up his delivery since Ball State days and has become more efficient. Has eliminated some inefficient movements and become more streamlined towards the plate. Everything is working as one. Velocity took a jump after improving delivery. Still has some significant head movement during the delivery though that will affect his command.

Fastball: Jameson was 92-95 and touched 96 in college when members of our team saw him in Arizona, and he lived up in the zone with the pitch. Since changing his delivery a bit from video I was able to find from instructional league the fastball has jumped. He's sitting 96-98 and I've seen as high as 99, supposedly he's hit 100 but I can't verify that. That could be slightly a product of working in smaller bursts, so that could be what's going on here. Need more info to verify. He's had no issues with holding velocity late in games while at Ball St. This is a big pitch. It's double-plus with improved command. Grade: 60

Curveball: His curveball would blend with his slider at times, but when its working well it has 11-to-5 break. He's supposedly altered his grip on his curve during the shutdown to get it to separate from his slider. Make it consistently its own pitch. Grade: 50

Slider: Slider generates whiffs at a high rate. Has that Diamondbacks signature, the plus horizontal movement, but will also show nice vertical depth. Pitch is his go to swing and miss pitch against same sided hitters. Above-average now, chance at plus down the line. Grade: 55

Changeup: I really like his changeup, he pronates well and it has two-seam movement. Its a firm pitch, coming in around 89-91, but he just doesn't throw it enough. If he mixes it in more I'll call it a plus pitch. For now it's just average. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Had some mechanical concerns which made it difficult to throw strikes while at Hillsboro, and while he's put in the work to make adjustments we haven't seen him in game action since. The delivery is better, but there still is significant head movement. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Jameson is an explosive arm that fits in extremely well for the modern game. He's very intelligent and know what he needs to do to improve, and takes to instruction well. I'd continue to push him as a starter as long as I could, knowing that the loud stuff will play in any role. He can be an impact arm in whatever his future role is, why not just let him pitch more often then.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 224 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 CBA Round 1
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Strong, durable frame at 6'4", 224 pounds that scouts adore. High waist, broad shoulders. Some projection left to his body. Highly touted out of high school, injury led him to campus in Miami. One of the top draft-eligible sophomores from the 2020 draft with big upside.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works from wind-up and stretch. Wind-up is a turn-and-fire delivery with a moderate leg kick and works downhill. From the stretch, there is a slight leg kick before he fires towards home plate. Low-effort delivery. Pitches from the first base side of the rubber with a three-quarters arm slot. Creates subtle deception and gets elite extension with his delivery.

Fastball: Fastball sat 91-96 MPH and topped 98 MPH during his time in Miami with spin rates that have surpassed 2,500 RPM's and has good running life to the pitch. The main concern has been sustaining velocity, which he struggled with at Miami. Once the velocity dipped into the low-90's, he often left the fastball high, leading to not so desirable outcomes. At camp in Arizona, he's reportedly been in the 94-98 MPH range, giving an indication that he has worked on improving sustainability during quarantine. Grade: 60

Curveball: Much like the change-up, he has a good feel for the pitch, but command of the pitch needs work. Does not throw it often, but it's a mid-to-high 70's offering with some bite and spin rates in the 2,400 RPM range. He hangs the pitch at times, leading to loud contact. Primary focus in Arizona has been to throw the pitch harder. Likely to be an average offering with room for improvement. Grade: 50

Slider: The best off-speed offering that Cecconi possesses. Mid-80's offering that has been his primary out-pitch. At its best, it will sit in the upper-80's with tight spin and firm shape, generating whiffs from lefties and righties. Looks like a cutter. Spin rates are within the 2,400-2,500 RPM range. The pitch has a tendency to become flat as he loses velocity throughout starts, much like the fastball. Likely to be a plus offering as he progresses. Grade: 60

Changeup: Good feel for the pitch, sits mid-80's with good fade and some consistent depth to it. Usually a weapon against lefties. Command hurts this offering, as Cecconi tends to let it run outside or leave it in the bottom of the zone too long. Has worked on firming up the pitch and commanding it better with Arizona. Average with a chance to get better. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Cecconi throws strikes well, as he walked only 25 batters across 101.1 innings with Miami. However, the command will need refinement as he moves forward. He does get too much of the strike zone at times, which has caused the so-so results he has posted. He has worked on commanding the fastball high in the zone, plus keeping off-speed low in camp. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: The chances of Cecconi starting will rely solely on his ability to sustain velocity throughout starts. So far, he has had rave reviews out of camp and instructs, with some saying he could be a future frontline starter. For now, he's got the ceiling of a #4 starter and the floor of a high leverage reliever with a potent fastball/slider combination. Improved command could vault him higher, though.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 228 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 2nd, HOU
RuleV: On 40-Man

Physical Description: At 6'2", 228 pounds, Martin could resemble the mold for which MLB starters are made from. It's the ideal build, athletic and also strong. Martin ended up requiring Tommy John surgery just prior to being traded at the 2019 deadline as part of the package for Zack Greinke.

Delivery & Mechanics: Pitches from the first base side of the rubber. Utilizes an inverted windup with his body already starting facing towards third, resembling pitching from the stretch. He then steps back with his front leg, and has a waist high leg kick. Simple, repeatable mechanics from a relatively low effort delivery.

Fastball: Averaged 95 with the fastball but can reach back for 97-98 seemingly when he wants to, which is nice to have in your back pocket, but he does lose 2-3 MPH late in games. Relies heavily on the fastball, will throw it nearly 70% of the time. Martin will throw the fastball to all four quadrants, but gets swings and misses when he elevates the pitch above the zone. The pitch has tremendous ride at the top of the zone, and has efficient enough spin to look like it rises as it crosses the plate. It's a plus pitch, and the velocity is back as he was sitting in the mid-90s at the alternate site. Throws the fastball with intent. His goal is to make you look bad everytime he throws it. Made a note of this when I watched his big league debut. It's very impressive that he will go inside with the heater and establish ownership of the inside half of the plate. Most young arms shy away from that. Not Martin. The word shy doesn't exist when he's on the mound. Grade: 60

Curveball: Very similar to his slider just less horizontal movement and more of the traditional 12-to-6 break. In regards to his slider and curveball, they are very similar pitches and he uses them interchangeably. He will mix them in against either handed hitter. The curveball will get whiffs. The curveball sits around 80-83 MPH, and its an above-average pitch that he has a good feel for. Grade: 55

Slider: Tight, horizontal movement while coming at hitters around 89 MPH, it has similar traits to the curveball and he leans on one of the breaking balls much more heavily in a given start than the other. It's hard to find a game where he's mixing in both of these offerings at will. Tends to stick to whichever one he has a better feel for that day. I prefer the slider to the curveball ever so slightly because I like the horizontal run the pitch has, and consider it a plus pitch. Will miss a ton of bats. Grade: 60

Changeup: His best secondary. Disguises itself to look just like the fastball but has strong fade and armside run, getting swings and misses as hitters are looking fastball. Will throw it to lefties and righties, but leans on it a bit more against lefties. It's an outstanding pitch. Comes in a bit firm, averaged 87 MPH, but it fits in with the rest of his arsenal. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Martin is always around the zone, but has a difficult time reigning in the stuff and hitting the mitt consistently. He also got burned by the long ball in his brief big league sample, and if he can locate with this loud arsenal, that won't happen. Martin doesn't have to be too fine, in fact he doesn't even need average command to be successful because the stuff is so loud. But the stuff leaks over the plate enough and he was far too hittable in his brief big league sample. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Martin has some of the best stuff in the organization, which is high praise due to the amount of quality arms in this system. He was rehabbing from Tommy John and all set to resume as baseball was restarting from the shutdown, but suffered an oblique injury during his rehab, and the fact that it was an abbreviated season with the Diamondbacks being non-factors they made the decision to just shut it down for the season. Martin should be a full participant with no limitation when baseball is set to resume. One thing to watch is building up his pitch count. He's only crossed the 100 pitch benchmark once in his professional career to this point, and hasn't proven he can go deep in ball games yet. That's less important now, but could be important in an organization like this if he wants to stick in the rotation. Bump the OFP up a grade and the role up a half grade is he comes back looking strong.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 1st
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Slender frame at 6'2", 195 pounds with plenty of projection remaining. High waisted with long limbs. Opted to go to Driveline and Cressey Sports Management instead of Cape Cod League after the 2019 season, added 20 pounds of muscle to his lower body and saw improved stuff across the board in an abbreviated 2020. Very competitive.

Delivery & Mechanics: Both the wind-up and stretch feature a high leg kick from the third base side of the rubber. Throws from a three-quarters armslot, pitches down the hill well. Extension is not the greatest and there is some slight effort in his delivery, but creates good deception. Repeats delivery well.

Fastball: With Duke in 2019, Jarvis' velocity range varied between 86 MPH and 92 MPH, but primarily sitting in the high-80's with a drop off as the season progressed. In 2020, Jarvis saw the velocity jump to 92-96 MPH in starts and touching 97 MPH in pre-draft bullpens. The pitch is a low-spin offering (2,100-2,300 RPM), but has a high spin-efficiency and generates good armside life and rise. He's got good command of the pitch and confidence has grown in throwing the pitch in later counts. Velocity during starts has held well, sitting 93-94 MPH late into starts in the spring. Maintaining that throughout a full season will be key for Jarvis. Grade: 60

Curveball: New pitch, but has good feel for it. Sat 77-79 MPH in the spring and has touched 80-81 MPH in bullpens pre-draft. Oft-used, but is an effective pitch. Good shape and depth with spin rates hovering around the 2,200-2,400 RPM band. Could become an above-average offering with more usage and progress. Grade: 50

Slider: Much like the fastball, the slider has seen an uptick in velocity. A low-80's pitch in 2019, it sat in the mid-80's during the 2020 campaign and has touched 88 MPH. The pitch has late break to it that was his primary out-pitch in the spring. It's a high spin offering (2,400-2,650 RPM) with low spin-efficiency. As starts progress, the pitch can get a bit inconsistent, but has good confidence in the pitch. Has a chance to become a plus offering. Grade: 55

Changeup: Arguably Jarvis' best off-speed pitch. Good spread from fastball velocity, as it sits in the mid-80's with great fade to it. The offering has very high spin, averaging close to 2,000 RPM and has touched 2,300 RPM with it. It works great off the fastball, as the spin rates are in a similar band. This causes the pitch to look like a fastball out of the hand. Jarvis has gotten very comfortable throwing the pitch to both righties and lefties. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Jarvis's control improved with the stuff as well. He walked 59 batters in 123.1 innings prior to 2020, but came out and walked just two batters across 27 innings this spring. Whether or not that pans out in a full season is still to be decided, but it gives promise that his control will be an above-average tool moving forward. The command is just as good, as he commands all four pitches very well. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: After having one of the best springs of any college pitcher, Jarvis has proven to be a high-octane arm. He'll be given every opportunity to start with Arizona, likely becoming a backend rotation arm with a chance to become a #3 starter, but that will rely on the sustainability of his new stuff over a full season. Lack of track record brings about some risk. Will be a very interesting follow in this system.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man

Physical Description: High waisted athlete, with a still developing frame. Plays smaller than his 6'2" frame, but hope is he adds some strength and develops some power to go with some already strong all-around skills. Noticeably different frame from earlier in the season and his time at AFL. I'd bet he added 10-12 pounds of muscle to the frame.

Hit: Perdomo is a very skilled craftsman in the box, and if you watch him play everytime you will see something new in his setup or approach. Very loose in the box, hands always swaying, body rocking back and forth, staying loose. He starts from a wide base, with his front foot pointed inwards. For his trigger he barely lifts his front foot off the ground, but does bring it backwards as his load before striding forward a few inches from where he was originally. His hands are his best asset, and his bat-to-ball skills are very strong. It's a swing geared for contact, and he will make plenty of it. Contact percentages around the 85% mark in 2019. He finishes high, with that one armed whip like finish, with the bat pointing straight up in the air. He's a switch-hitter and is a much better hitter from the left-side. His right-handed swing is more of a slap hitters approach, and very flat. Perdomo has an innate feel for the strike zone and is constantly in three ball counts and making the opposing pitcher work. Can't tell you how many times I saw Perdomo go down looking on bad calls by the home plate umpire. His eye was simply too advanced for Low-A, and better than most umpires down there. If you factor the walk rate in with the hit tool it's an easy plus tool. Grade: 60

Power: Perdomo has bottom of the scale power from the right-side of the plate, but as a left-handed hitter he's starting to show flashes of a developing skill that can change the profile. He's never going to ever be a big power source, but he's going to have to be able to drive the ball. His average exit velocity at Kane County was around 81 MPH, but within a year he was up to 87 MPH in the AFL. The body has filled out some over the course of the season, and he was at the plate looking to do damage, as opposed to just looking to get on base like he had been earlier in the year. He had a sturdier base out in Arizona, was putting more of his weight on his back leg, looking to drive the ball. While in Low-A he would take a pitch and immediately follow it with a series of steps in the box. His weight was on his front foot. We're seeing a shift in philosophy taking place here and his 2020 season happened mostly behind closed doors, with limited eyes on him. That being said, I see Perdomo topping out around 10-12 homers per season, which if the rest of his game translates to the big league level, that's more than enough. Grade: 40

Field: Smooth hands, good actions and internal clock at short. Perdomo is a natural at shortstop and is the organization's shortstop of the future. He makes the flashy play look routine, and sometimes makes the routine play a little flashy, but it's all part of the package. The Diamondbacks had him playing some second base at Kane County in an effort to add versatility, which they've been doing with all of their prospects in the minors. He's a shortstop going forward though. He's quick and his long strides allow to him to cover plenty of ground. Moves to his left particularly well and has strong footwork Grade: 60

Arm: An above-average throwing arm that allows him to get more than enough on throws from the hole or shallow centerfield to first. It's an accurate arm as well, but will sail the occasional throw. Grade: 55

Run: Plus runner with long strides, Perdomo is a pest on the bases. Pitchers treat him as such as he routinely draws 3-4 pickoff throws per time on base, and is very aggressive with his leads. His caught stealing numbers can be a bit misleading as a large percentage of his outs on the bases were him getting picked off rather than thrown out by the catcher. So his stolen base success rate is much higher than it looks on paper. It is troubling that he gets picked off so frequently, but he pushes the limit with strong leads and I've witnessed him trip or stumble multiple times trying to get back to the first base bag. He also doesn't get out of the box very smoothly and I've seen him stumble a few times there as well. Body control is something he could work to improve. He's a plus runner though and should be able to steal 15-20 bases in the big leagues. Grade: 60

Overall: There's a high floor here due to the defensive value and borderline elite plate skills, but also some upside with the emerging power. I've seen Perdomo play in probably 40+ games and have a strong feel for what he can do on the field, and while I'm skeptical of his long term power output, there is no questioning the rest of his game.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 2nd
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong, but short and slender, Thomas has a compact frame. Not much physical projection remaining here, but he's very strong considering his stature. Was a three-sport athlete with a football scholarship to TCU before signing with the Diamondbacks for overslot. His dad is the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the White Sox.

Hit: Stands tall in the box with a slightly open stance. Active hands, waving the bat like a wand and will rest it on his shoulder before the pitch. Big leg kick as the trigger and has above-average bat speed. Will hit the ball on the ground a bit too frequently, but will use all fields. Holds his own against same-side pitching, but has feasted on right-handers thus far. Strong contact skills, with the time he spent in High-A as the notable exception. Will take his walks, profiles nicely as a future top of the lineup option. When he's going right he's hitting hard line drives everywhere. It's a plus hit tool. Grade: 60

Power: Thomas has put on some power displays during batting practice, and has above-average raw power. He's still learning to fully utilize it in games. It's a bit of a level swing, and he will pound the ball into the ground, limiting his power potential. Level swing makes him a good fit for the Dbacks as they will face many high spin arms in their division. A true line-to-line extra base threat, probably consistently sits around 16-20 homers annually, but while hitting doubles and triples at a high rate. Grade: 45

Field: The Diamondbacks prioritize versatility, so Thomas did spend a fair amount of time on one of the outfield corners. Don't be fooled by that though as he's an above-average defender in centerfield with a quick first step and can make the difficult look routine, especially when he's going back on the ball. Grade: 55

Arm: A below average arm, Thomas may be a better fit for left because of the arm. Grade: 40

Run: Thomas is a plus runner, routinely getting times around 4.20 from home to first. There's enough baserunning skills to swipe 12-15 bags a year and leg out plenty of infield hits. He's right on the line between plus speed and above-average speed, worth watching to see if he bulked up some more and slowed down at all. Grade: 60

Overall: Thomas is one of the most well-rounded prospects in baseball with a plus hit tool, plus wheels and above-average power and defensive skills. He's consistently been one of the youngest players in the league despite being one of the top performers. Thomas should hit for a strong average while contributing on both sides of the ball.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Prototype body; looks like an NFL caliber wide receiver. Has room to add significant weight to frame. Currently high waisted with long limbs. Elite athlete with quick twitch. Very long strides and glides when underway. Thick thighs and rear end. Draws you to him when he steps on the field.

Hit: With long limbs and large frame. Elite bat speed and body control are his best traits in the box. It's unusual for a kid this young with a body like this to be fully in control of his body like he is. Quiet stance, w/ minimal movement. Everything is in sync mechanically, but he will expand his strike zone with two strikes, especially up. He has the difficult task of defending such a large strike zone, and there are still approach and swing and miss concerns. He's passive at the plate and will fall behind in the count at times. There were some major swing and miss issues with KRob at the alternate site, and reportedly it was to the point where it affected his confidence. Something to look out for. Grade: 50

Power: He has all fields power. In-game power is still developing, but it's a plus tool. Power comes mostly from the upper half presently. Learning to incorporate lower half in swing more. More line drives than high, towering blasts, due to level bat path. He's going to generate high exit velocities. Game power is future plus with raw power likely being a tick above. During the 2019 season his max EV was 114 MPH, and he average 90. 112. max during fall instructs, while averaging 89. Also improved his launch and added some loft. Future double-plus if the hit tool improves. Grade: 60

Field: He's moved around the outfield, spending time at all three outfield spots as the organization has done with all of their top prospects to increase versatility. He's a future left fielder though because he takes poor routes to balls and lacks feel on the grass. He's also likely to fill out and slow down as he ages. Grade: 40

Arm: Strong arm, he's improved throwing mechanics and moved from below average to average. Some accuracy issues in my looks, but there's enough carry and athleticism to get the ball in from the outfield quickly. Grade: 50

Run: Smooth plus runner with long, gazelle-like strides. Will fill out and slow down as he matures, but with his frame he should still be above-average at peak. Long legs and athleticism and can be a 15-20 stolen base threat once he learns the ins-and-outs on the basepaths. Grade: 55

Overall: It's a high risk but high reward profile and he could be a potential 30-35 homer bat with development. Needs some polish on the defensive side but with a potential bat like this that doesn't matter as much. Big, strong kid with all the necessary tools and has already hit full season ball at 18. He hits hard line drives but will need to generate more loft to fully maximize power potential. Future middle of the lineup bat.

RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Wirey, projectable frame with significant room to add strength throughout. Tapered shoulders with long, lanky arms. High waist with long, slim legs. Good athlete; turned down division 1 football offers. Injury history includes Tommy John Surgery in November, 2020.

Mechanics: High 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort; easy, fluid motion gets tighter from the stretch. Hides the ball well; plus arm speed and high leg kick yields deception. Timing with upper and lower half shows inconsistency.

Fastball: 90-92 t93 with modest riding life; two-seamer flashes tumbling sink. Missed arm side consistently due to timing issues; could be fixed with continued pro instruction. Physical gains could help velocity a tick. Grade: 50

Curveball: 77-80; sits below average and flashes plus with tight, 12/6 rotation. Huge gap between what is and what could be; pitch lacks consistent feel; bounces the pitch often. Potential for above-average, but risk warrants a fringe-average grade currently. Grade: 45

Changeup: 84-85 flashing feel and fade beneath the zone; thrown exclusively to opposite-handed batters currently. Needs to be thrown more; movement overlaps two-seam on occasion. Could easily play average, but may settle in at fringe depending on usage. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Fring-average control and well below average command currently; lacks a feel for his pitches; inconsistencies in the delivery hinder his ability to get in a groove. Possible fix with pro instruction. Fluidity with delivery and athleticism help slightly. Control: 45 | Command: 30

Overall: The report on Baumler, while it appears negative, is mainly revolved around his rawness as a prospect. Developing a well-repeated delivery and feel for his breaking ball would do wonders for the profile. Unlike many freshly drafted prep arms, it appears Baumler has his change-up figured out, which helps to mitigate any future reliever risk. There is a path for Baumler to be a back-end starter at the major league level, but due to the numerous hurdles to reach such a ceiling, a spot-starter/long relief option is most likely.

Physical Description: Big and very athletic build with long limbs and plenty of physical projection to his frame. Broad shoulders, as well. Also played basketball at East Troy High School in Wisconsin.

Hit: Right-handed swing that is triggered by a medium leg kick. Hands start parallel to his ears, with the bat wrapped around his head. Stance is straight, has quick hands and has improved swing consistency after having a more up-and-down swing plane last year. Drives his hips well. There is a definite concern about swing-and-miss potential, as the swing can get long, but reports from instructs suggest that he hit well. Will be an interesting bat to keep an eye on, especially if his contact rate rises. Grade: 40

Power: Vukovich has some of the best raw power of any player in the 2020 draft class. Generates great bat speed, despite having virtually zero load to his swing. Current pullside pop will grow into power to all fields as he matures physically. Swing has good natural loft to it. What holds back the grade from being plus is his contact rate, but it certainly is not out of the question that he could reach that grade at some point. Grade: 55

Field: Vukovich has played at the hot corner, although he likely will be moved to a corner outfield spot or first base. Moves fast for his size, and Arizona tried him out at the position in instructs and he reportedly has shown vast improvements in his defense. Athleticism would help him if he did move to a corner outfield position. However, he's likely to be a fringe-average defender. Grade: 45

Arm: There is good arm strength with Vukovich. In high school, Vukovich touched 93 MPH from the outfield and touched 92 MPH in the infield. The arm action can get a bit funky when he throws, which holds back the grade a bit. Likely to be an average arm, but can't rule out above-average in the future. Grade: 50

Run: With the athleticism he has for his size, Vukovich runs well. Ran a 6.8 60 yard dash in high school, which grades out to above-average. However, he won't be known for his speed, with added strength and weight to his frame potentially leading to a disappearance of speed as he grows. Grade: 50

Overall: While showing out at instructs after a dismal 2019 summer campaign, Vukovich has given a good impression to Arizona brass. The power will continue to grow as he adds more muscle to his frame, but questions about contact and being able to hit quality pitching certainly arise. Can't rule out a potential platoon role for him once he reaches the majors.

Evaluator: Mike Kinsela

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 4
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Long, lean, projectable build with wiry muscle and tons of room for growth. High-waisted with athletic look. Plus-plus body.

Hit: Blakely has above-average bat speed and over time has done an excellent job refining his swing path from a pure uppercut stroke to more of an on-plane, smooth path. He's unrefined in terms of identifying offspeed stuff as well as his overall control of the strike zone, and swing-and-miss is currently abundant in his game. Long, long ways to go in terms of developing the hit tool but has components. Grade: 30

Power: The bat speed and physical projection allow for substantial power projection. Blakely is already capable of driving the ball pull-side out of the yard and has shown some feel for using the backside gap. The raw power projection here is easily plus, though projecting game power given the limited hit tool projection is more difficult. Grade: 45

Field: Hit-and-miss currently, as Blakely has the actions and athleticism to be a standout defender but isn't there in terms of consistency yet. Flashes plus hands and feet, moves extremely well and has plus range, still working on the pitch-to-pitch consistency that the position requires, but has big upside as a defender. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus raw arm strength, when he lets it rip it's impressive with zip and carry, inconsistencies plague this tool as well, internal clock is unrefined yet, accuracy and consistency also unrefined, still the makings of a plus tool here potentially. Grade: 50

Run: Plus runner, moves extremely well, quick out of the box and down the line, second gear is impressive, can tell athleticism in the infield as well. Grade: 60

Overall: Blakely is potentially as high-risk/high-reward a player as there was in the 2020 draft. As a prep bat with wild swings between good and bad throughout his toolset, any outcome is possible. He could repeat rookie ball repeatedly and never see levels above that, or he could be an above-average big leaguer with loud power/defense/athleticism tools.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 1, NYM
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Strong, sturdy, muscled build. Thick lower half, broad shoulders and barrel chested. Physique is matured and optimized. Shows good power and speed in impressive athletic package. Explosive, fluid movements. Unmatched competitive drive with extreme personal expectations. Has yet to face extended adversity in performance.

Hit: Slightly open stance with even weight and balance distribution throughout entire operation. Slightly crouched with moderately wide base. Incredibly short to the ball with impressive bat speed. Body movements are synced up and fluid from load through through contact. Head is still. Keeps weight back on all pitches. Finds plenty of barrels in all four quadrants. Attacks velocity at the top of the zone with ease. Mature approach, will take his walks while demonstrating advanced pitch recognition. Can be susceptible to breaking balls from RHP at his back foot and plus breaking stuff away from lefties. Future plus hitter that will play at the top or middle of any lineup. Grade: 60

Power: Optimized kinetic chain through his swing. Shortness to ball allows for big extension and strength out front. Swing plane is geared to drive the ball through the air without selling out for fly balls. Impressive strength in his legs and core help produce big exit velos for his size. Easy plus pull-side power with the ability to drive the occasional fastball over the opposite field wall as well. Middle of the order impact power that he gets to in-game Grade: 60

Field: Above average defender with impressive instincts and effort/hustle; strong routes and reactions in the outfield; good range in center, may be forced into a corner if the body slows down - should be able to stick in centerfield into him prime. Ranges to his left and to his right; tracks the ball well back to infield; fluid motions and could dissolve if he puts on too much more muscle mass. Reliable, above average defender in center, likely a plus defender in either corner. Grade: 55

Arm: Shows very good arm strength, throws line drives into the infield and to home that lack much tail or extra carry. One of the quicker catch-to-release mechanics I have seen. Incredibly quick to get rid of the ball. Capable of gunning down an advancing runner. A definitive asset in centerfield, would fit well in right field Grade: 60

Run: Above average runner that uses instincts in the field and on the basepaths to get the most out of his speed. Will be a base-stealing threat and will certainly try to take the extra base. Hit & power tools should allow him a very strong chance at being a 20-20 guy at big league level. Achieved such feat in 2019. Grade: 55

Overall: Loud tools across the board. Should be a no doubt middle of the lineup bat. Asset on the basepaths and should make some highlight plays in the outfield. Only item left unchecked is how he'll respond to adversity and prolonged slump. Unrelenting desire for greatness suggests he'll be fine. Impact player profile here.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 2 (NYM)
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Sturdy, physically-advanced frame with modest projection remaining throughout. Athletic build; tapered shoulders; sunken chest; long, loose arms; trim, high waist; lean and strong thighs and legs. Frame reminds me of MLB pitcher Jordan Zimmermann.

Mechanics: High 3/4 slot with moderate effort; shows torso tilt at the hips to clear the arm; clawing arm action with a modest leg kick. Plus arm speed and compact delivery yield modest deception. Simple, repeatable delivery. Fields position well. Slow to the plate at times; varies leg kick and timing from the stretch.

Fastball: Heavy usage at 92-94; riding life in the upper third of the zone. Two-seam sits in the lower band with boring action in the lower part of the zone. Often works vertically with the pitch; consistently changes eye level. Command is inconsistent; misses on the inner third get barreled. An overall above-average offering with some potential to flash plus with some continued physical gains. Grade: 55

Curveball: 73-75 flashing plus with tight, steep, vertical break. Most often shows average with 11/5 movement and slurvy action; casts it at times; shows rotation without snap. Controls it around the zone and generates swings and misses down and away to same-sided batters. Above-average potential, but likely settles at a solid average offering long-term considering current inconsistencies. Grade: 50

Changeup: 79-81; an above-average offering; deceptive; maintains arm speed causing the fastball to play up. Moves it around the zone; flashes nasty, fading action to the arm side. Good feel to both sides of the plate; tends to get flat when thrown in the upper parts of the zone. Little refinement necessary to reach projection. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Above-average control with average command; fills the zone with all his pitches and sequences well; may need to turn to offspeed more often as he reaches the upper levels. Even many misses remain in the zone; not prone to give up the free pass. Demeanor and makeup allow him to stay in counts when behind. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Woods Richardson's well-rounded arsenal lend some clues as to why the Blue Jays challenged him with a High-A assignment as an 18-year old following the trade from New York. Some gains with the fastball would raise the ceiling and are not out of the question considering the body still has some projection left. Two solid secondaries and his above-average control help mitigate reliever risk; but those attributes would even help propel him into a high-leverage role depending on the needs of the MLB club.

Evaluator: Mike Kinsela

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Athletic, compact build with good strength and some explosive twitch to his build. Looks like the part of a middle-of-diamond athlete. Plus body.

Hit: Martin's calling card is his hit tool, as he combines plus bat speed with plus feel for the barrel and elite hands to form both an excellent mechanical swing and excellent results. The swing is compact and short, with excellent barrel lag and feel for using the whole ballpark with authority. Notably, he also walked more than he struck out while playing in the SEC at Vanderbilt, and his on-base skills are factored into this grade. Grade: 70

Power: Martin's swing is more geared for flatter-launch, sprayed line drives but he has the bat speed/strength combination to produce above-average raw power, particularly to the pull side. Most of Martin's power will come from the prodigious amount of extra base hits he is projected to accumulate, but there's still reason to believe he can drive 15-20 balls out of the yard on an annual basis. Grade: 50

Field: Martin is a curious case in that he's a player without a true defensive home but one who can handle premium spots at a solid level. He could reasonably play 2B, SS, 3B, LF, or CF realistically, and the issue with his positioning is the arm tool really. The Jays have sent him out at SS in spring training, most scouts seemed split between CF and 3B as an amateur, but it's most likely that he's given every chance to play on the dirt. Grade: 50

Arm: Martin's troublesome tool, if that phrase exists, is the arm. His raw arm strength is solid average and totally fine, but the consistency of his throwing mechanics led to some bouts of wildness, which made scouts question his utility on the infield. We didn't get to see much in 2020 to make final determinations, but all signs point to Martin's arm being a totally fine tool that'll allow him to play the left side. Grade: 50

Run: Martin can turn in plus times down the line and his speed is felt at a plus level once on the basepaths as well, as he's a threat to steal 15-20 bases annually and is a very good, instinctive base runner. The raw speed grade is above-average and not plus, but don't be surprised to see Martin with plus impact on the game as a result of his speed. Grade: 55

Overall: Martin was a 1:1 candidate prior to the pandemic and ended up in the top 3 of every relevant public draft board out there, with many maintaining him at 1 over Spencer Torkelson. A potentially double-plus hitter with good impact to the bat, quality on-base/base running skills with good power and the potential to be a true Swiss Army Knife defender, Martin's upside is that of a perennial All Star, but he's most likely a strongly above-average regular who posts 3-4 WAR per season.

Physical Description: Sturdy, strong frame; more athletic than average for the position; thick neck with sloped shoulders; strong, well-defined forearms; thick, muscular lower half. 6'0" 215 lbs list height and weight appears accurate. Good work ethic; wants to be better. Did not start catching until high school.

Hit: Slightly open stance; hands sit high near the helmet away from the body; wide base. Small circle motion with the bat going into load; will step with the front foot but no stride; stiff lower half. Patient approach; contact issues especially with velocity; bat stays in the zone very little time; takes walks but will also strike out against good spin. Overall below-average hit tool. Grade: 40

Power: Power projects average; raw power shows flashes in-game; will hit home runs to left and center. Limited physical projection remaining will limit additional gains; contact issues cause power to play fringe-average. Grade: 45

Field: Plus fielder; agile movements behind the plate; excellent job blocking balls in the dirt; keeps the ball in front. Quiet glove; sets a nice target for pitchers and excellent framing ability. Grade: 60

Arm: Arm is double plus; strong and accurate. Unafraid to back pick runners sleeping on the base paths. Quick transfers with strong throws: pop times will range 1.88-1.95. Accurate; throws directly to the base. Grade: 70

Run: Well below-average running ability; station to station but will be able to tag on deep fly balls on the bases. Average runner for a catcher; not a base stealing threat. Grade: 30

Overall: Textbook backup catcher profile; strong defensive instincts and skills with work ethic to help reach that potential. Will need to hit to stick but defensive abilities should get him a look at the MLB level.

Physical Description: Short, slender build. Sloped shoulders; below-average strength throughout. Average athleticism. Live energetic body.

Hit: Switch hitter. Slightly open stance; high hands; slightly crouched with a wide base from the right side. Slightly closed off from the left side. Modest toe tap timing mechanism on load. Below-average bat speed and a linear bat path. Primarily a slap hitting contact guy, just looking to put the ball in play. Has pitch recognition and some discipline; decent bat to ball. Works counts to occasionally extend at-bats. Plays within his game. Shows the ability to sacrifice himself and hit behind the runner. Overall, a well below-average tool. Grade: 40

Power: Bottom of the scale tool, with minimal remaining projection. Below-average bat speed. Simply lacks the necessary strength, bat speed, and bat path to adequately drive the ball with authority. Occasional extra-base hit will likely be a result of his legs. Overall there's bottom-of-the-scale, over-the-fence and extra-base power in his profile. Grade: 20

Field: Plus defender with great instincts. Enough skill and feel to adequately play anywhere on the infield dirt. Quick feet; soft hands; quick transfers and turns. Ranges well to both sides; reads hops well regardless of their difficulty. A sure-handed defender that's automatic with routine plays, and able to execute the occasional highlight reel play. Grade: 60

Arm: Double-Plus arm, an absolute cannon. Strong accurate throws with low carry; delivered on a line with impressive velocity and accuracy. Grade: 70

Run: Runs well, occasional above-average clocks down the line, but predominantly average; which is where he'll likely settle long term as he matures. Grade: 50

Overall: Prototypical defense first profile. With bottom of the scale power, his bat would have to drastically improve to jump into everyday regular status. Limited ceiling; high floor; likely a AAAA depth piece with some utility/platoon type upside.

Physical Description: Tall, large frame; sturdy; built like a power forward. Long limbs, high waist with long, tree-trunk legs. Massive feet that take up over half the rubber; moves surprisingly well for his size; limited physical projection remaining with minimal strength gains to be had.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from a high 3/4 arm-slot from his 6'6" frame with max effort and slight head whack; some herk-and-jerk after hand break and extension generated from his long legs yield some deception. Pitches exclusively from the stretch; balanced upon leg kick with arm action that goes straight down to straight up; lots of moving parts. Quick arm.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 mph t97 with riding life up in the zone; modest arm side run. Average fastball that will flash above-average; will miss up in the zone. Continued pro instruction and cleaning up mechanics may help it reach plus velocity consistently, but command will cause it to play down a tick to above-average. Grade: 55

Slider: Primary secondary offering; 83-87 mph with inconsistent desired velocity; will throw for called strikes ahead in the count as well as down in the zone late in counts for swings and misses. Good bite in the zone; flashes above-average but sits average. Grade: 50

Changeup: 87-89 mph; maintains arm speed well but not enough separation between fastball to yield swings and misses. Straight change lacks deception; no fading or darting action. Will throw for strikes but pitch is not thrown with conviction. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Does a decent job of throwing strikes but will miss the mitt with all three pitches. Shows more comfort with the slider than the fastball at times. Head whack and moving parts in delivery will hurt command; might be able to fix the deficiency with continued pro instruction. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Profile screams reliever; mammoth presence on the mound with a bulldog mentality. Quieting down the delivery may help with command but deception should make him a candidate for middle relief. One inning stints maximum would be best considering stuff and effort level.

Physical Description: Thick sturdy frame. Average strength in upper half; thick lower half. Still projects to add more upper body strength. Might require some maintenance as he matures. Above-average athleticism.

Hit: Open stance from both sides of the plate. Stands fairly upright, hands at the letters with a wide base. Average bat speed. Sweet swing from the left side. Aggressive but advanced approach. Has some tracking and pitch recognition, lacks discipline and consistent focus. Extreme peaks and valleys. Can disappear in a lineup for weeks, giving away at-bats; but can also lock in and beast out for a hot stretch. Might be a slow burn, but there's signs of a potential average hitter. Grade: 50

Power: Average bat speed; decent barrel control; shows the ability to sting the ball from both sides of the plate. Modest over-the-fence power due to limited loft in the swing. Potential to pepper the gaps with a respectable amount of extra- base knocks as he finishes filling out and polishes up the hit tool deficiencies. Plus speed should help boost the extra-base hit column. Grade: 45

Field: Athleticism and instincts occasionally flash a Plus defender. Immaturity and lack of experience, however, shine through yielding a rather average glove. The game speeds upon him at times. He'll occasionally boot balls and get eaten up by rather routine plays. Overall it's likely an average tool as he matures. Grade: 50

Arm: Shows plus arm strength. Strong throws with low carry; delivered on a line; inconsistent accuracy. Plenty of arm for plays deep in the hole. Inconsistent release and accuracy push the grade down a tick. Grade: 55

Run: Plus runner. Quick out of the box; impressive second gear. Wheels are an asset with stolen bases and taking the extra hustle bag. Immaturity and aggressive nature cause him to occasionally run into outs. Grade: 60

Overall: Well rounded defensive profile with impressive speed. Some serious pressure on the bat to develop to push the profile. Should the approach and hit tool deficiencies shore up, there's a solid well rounded second division regular. More realistically, Perez looks like a solid potential utility or platoon type. Modest room for additional growth/gains. Bloodlines: the son of Jose Cruz Jr and grandson of Houston Astros great Jose Cruz Sr.

Hit: Open stance; hands at the head; upright with a narrow base. Above-average bat speed. Quick to and through the ball with a level bat path; swing can get long at times -- yielding swing and miss against above-average or better secondaries. Modest pre-load waggle but relatively quiet; slight stride assisted toe tap timing mechanism and quick trigger. Contact oriented approach with a respectable amount of power. Aims to put the ball into play without sacrificing power. More than enough polish to handle the lower to mid-levels of minor league ball. Continued development with pitch recognition and improved consistency with driving the ball will be important moving forward. Grade: 40

Power: Bat speed and leverage in swings indicates future average power; Barrel control indicates an inconsistency in barreling up for power; however, can handle wood. Pitch recognition will need to develop in order to hit for power consistently. Line drive, gap hit type. Grade: 40

Field: Solid average fielder - good defensive habits. Clean and quick footwork; soft hands with solid transfers and good range that can play up anywhere in the infield. The game speeds up on him at times; errant throws and misreads on semi-difficult hops. Pro instruction should clear up some of these minor deficiencies, yielding an adequate and capable defender. Grade: 50

Hit: Hands start and stay back through load; set just above the letters with a high back elbow; wide base with a modest leg kick entering load generating average bat speed. Approach is over-patient; takes walks but strikeouts will be a problem. Struggles to make consistent contact. Overall, below-average hit tool. Grade: 40

Power: Surprising power given his frame; extra base hits almost exclusively to the pull field. Shows average, but contact issues and role will suppress home run totals. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average fielder; smooth actions defensively with soft hands that would play fine in the middle infield. Good instincts and versatility; able to play anywhere in the dirt. Consistent, reliable defender up the middle. Grade: 55

Arm: Average arm; makes expected plays with accuracy. Clean, quick transfers from the glove; capable of making throws on the run. Would be fine at either middle infield spot. Grade: 50

Run: Some regression through the Minor Leagues but still an above-average runner. Quick, choppy steps to get down the line; light on his feet. Home to first 4.25-4.30; sits more toward above average times. Runs well on the bases with instincts, but likely not a candidate for double digit steals. Grade: 55

Overall: Versatility in the infield and ability to draw walks will give him a shot at a Major League roster but his bat will determine his ultimate role and how long he sticks. Slider: 83-85; Inconsistent spin; sweeping action at times down and away to right-handed batters. Lacks late break; generates swings and misses when thrown down with good spin. Grade: 45

Changeup: 83-85 with consistent arm speed with fading action arm side. Flashes above average. Swings and misses vs LHB. Lacks ideal velocity. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Moves the fastball around the zone but will miss up occasionally; slider command inconsistent but able to throw strikes. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Middle inning reliever ceiling; more likely mop-up or long man out of the pen. No projection remaining; physically matured and fastball has had a modest decrease in velocity since draft night. Single inning relief outings may help fastball velocity. Curveball may be phased out if he works middle relief.
