Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Looks the part: every bit of listed 6'3" 205 pounds. Lean, athletic frame; tapered build. Broad shoulders that slightly slope; average upper body and core; high waist with long limbs, muscular thighs and backside. Average athleticism. Impressive work ethic and leadership qualities. Moderate physical projection remains; upper body should fill out nicely as he continues to mature. Injury history includes a left foot injury (plantar fasciitis) that sidelined him for the majority of the 2019 season.

Hit: Slightly open stance that squares on load; hands high above the letters; upright stance with a slight crouch and wide base. Busy pre-load; large leg lift on gather opens body up to clear hips on load; shortens to a smaller stride or toe tap when behind in the count. Quick trigger. Strong hands and quick wrists generate plus bat speed. Fluid swing with natural loft. Advanced feel; solid bat-to-ball skills; shows patience, grinding out ABs waiting for his pitch; occasionally more passive than you'd prefer to see. Utilizes entire field. Enough bat speed to handle premium velocity; occasionally exposed by chase up in the zone and above-average or better off-speed and breaking balls. Deficiencies should shore up a tick with further pro instruction. Grade: 55

Power: Plus raw in BP; shows average in game. Explosive hands and quick wrists generate plus bat speed. Fluid swing with natural loft. Good barrel control; stays within his swing, seldom selling out for power. Drives the ball with authority to all fields; drives the gaps; shows significant over-the-fence pop. Frame and physicality ideal for future power; should easily mature into an above-average asset. Grade: 55

Field: Reads contact well; fringe-average first step but he has natural feel for SS. Has mobility but foot speed limits range. Soft hands; good footwork; quick transfers and turns. Enough instincts and skill to yield a fringy but passable defender at short in a pinch; grade plays closer to average if/when he's eventually pushed to 3B; could also see him as an asset in RF where the arm strength would shine. Grade: 50

Arm: Clean arm actions and solid mechanics yield plus arm-strength that's an asset on the left side of the diamond. Decent accuracy with crisp velocity and optimal carry. Has enough arm to throw over-the-top across the diamond with steam from deep in the hole. Grade: 60

Run: Presently a fringe-average runner with clocks mostly between 4.35-4.41 home to first. Speed likely to regress a half grade with physical maturity. Slow out of the box; lacks an impact second gear; runs flat footed with short, choppy strides. Enough instincts and feel to occasionally take the extra hustle bag but mostly a station to station guy. Grade: 40

Overall: Groshans has the ingredients of a potential middle of lineup bat capable of hitting for both average and power. The eventual move to third should yield a solid average defender with a plus arm. The profile has some additional value as there's likely some defensive versatility. Overall Groshans should continue to mature physically and evolve into an above-average first-division regular.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 19 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 148 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium frame. Lean, wiry athletic build with below-average strength. Shoulders that slope; skinny torso; lean lower half. Bearish on remaining physical projection. High priority J2 signee in 2018; $2.5M (Cuba).

Hit: Switch hitter; noticeably more effective from the left side. Open stance; hands at the letters; body upright with feet barely shoulder width apart. Quiet pre-load; large leg lift on gather; above-average bat speed; short and quick to the contact point. Advanced feel; solid bat-to-ball skills; shows patience, grinding out ABs waiting for his pitch. More slap and dash than I anticipated; well barreled shots yield rather weak contact. Enough bat speed to handle premium velocity; occasionally exposed by chase on the outer third and up in the zone. Often exposed by even average or better off-speed and breaking balls. Deficiencies could shore up a tick with further pro instruction. A well below-average tool presently, Vargas features many of the core ingredients of an above-average or better hitter. His limited physical projection and current inability to drive the ball or handle advanced secondaries have me bearish on the hit tool's projection. Grade: 40

Power: Lacks the necessary size and strength to adequately drive the ball with authority. Inconsistent bat path hinders his ability to regularly lift the ball against quality stuff. Will occasionally sellout for power attempting to lift and drive with less than stellar results; at his best when he plays within his game. BP predominantly utilized to spray line drives around the field. Power isn't bottom-of-the-scale at the big league level, but it's fairly close given his build and limited physical projection. Future power will predominantly be of the XBH variety; a result of finding gaps and utilizing his instincts and speed. Grade: 30

Field: Potential impact tool. Plus defender with advanced feel; great instincts; the game rarely speeds up on him. Enough skill and feel to adequately play anywhere on the infield dirt; enough arm to stick at SS. Shows the smarts to cut down lead runners when the opportunity is presented. Quick feet; soft hands; quick transfers and turns. Ranges well to both sides; reads hops well regardless of their difficulty. A sure-handed defender that's automatic with routine plays, and able to execute the occasional highlight reel play. Grade: 60

Arm: Easy plus raw arm strength with a quick release. Strong accurate throws with low carry, delivered on a line with impressive velocity. More than enough arm to stick on the left side of the diamond; can make the required throws from deep in the hole. Likes to show it off at times, uncorking the occasional laser or showboating with flair. Overall grade plays down a tick at times because of occasional youthful mistakes / accuracy issues; those rare occurrences are likely to shore up and polish with further pro instruction. Grade: 60

Run: Occasional plus straight line speed; mostly above-average clocks home-to-1B and he should settle there long term. Quick first step with an impactful second gear. Awareness and competitive nature yields strong turns and aggressive base-running, earning the occasional extra hustle base. Smart base-runner who picks his spots and reads pitchers well. Quick twitch athleticism and speed aid him well on defense. Grade: 55

Overall: Impact defense and speed help carry the profile, yielding some second-division regualr role 40 upside. Lack of power in an era where shortstops are expected to absolutely rake, blemishes the profile, padding on extra risk. Overall, there's tremendous pressure on the hit tool, which is ultimately the decisive factor in whether Vargas carves out a regular role or simply washes out in the minors.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Large physically developed frame: broad shoulders with mild slope; long levers; average strength throughout upper body and core; high waist with a strong, sturdy lower half. Frame is likely at projection. Lengthy injury history includes Tommy John surgery in May of 2017 and additional IL stints for minor elbow inflammation.

Mechanics: Semi-windup; tall and fall. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and high effort in the delivery. Short compact arm action. Long stride with above-average extension. Solid deception from waist high leg kick and deep hand break. Frame and high arm slot generate steep downward plane. Choppy but fairly simple and well repeated mechanics on delivery.

Fastball: Sits 93-96. High slot generates a steep plane. Two-seam variant generates heavy sink and hard bore against same-sided batters. Four-seamer features solid arm-side run. Trusts the pitch; attacks all four quads; will attack with it in hitter's counts. Control over command; misses are predominantly glove side and up in the zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sits 83-86. Often misclassified as a slider because of its velocity, shape and high spin rate; utilizes a hybrid spike curve / knuckle curve grip. Shows advanced feel; manipulates arm action to occasionally mix in a softer variant with more traditional 11/5 break. Primarily shows firm two-plane break; more vertical tilt than sweeping action with exceptional bite. Commands the offering exceptionally well; will throw it inside on RHB to steal strikes and back foot it against LHB for chase. Legitimate put-away offering. Grade: 60

Changeup: Firm change of pace offering that sits 87-90. Has feel and thrown with conviction; lacks optimal velo separation and consistent execution. Occasionally slows arm speed telegraphing and guiding the pitch; should refine with further pro instruction. Lacks significant fade but features solid late vertical drop. Thrown almost exclusively to LHB; elicits weak contact and moderate swing and miss. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Control over command. Confident strike thrower; lives in or around the zone. Shows some pitchabilty; attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level and sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. Shallow arsenal that's prone to heavy FB / CB sequencing and may have issues turning over a big league lineup multiple times. Average control and below-average command yields additional reliever risk. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A bit of an anticipated slow burn, Schmidt finally debuted late last season with mixed results. The development of his change-up and command will ultimately determine if he reaches draft day's mid-rotation ceiling, or settles in as a solid backend SP. A less optimal, but solid fallback plan would be a move to the bullpen where his electric FB/CB combo likely yield an impact high-leverage relief arm.

Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Large frame; sturdy build. Broad shoulders; long levers; high waist; strong core; power bottom. Physically mature and maxed out. Impressive athleticism: standout HS baseball, basketball and football player.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; moderate effort delivery; high 3/4 slot generates steep downward plane. Above-average arm speed; simple, quick well repeated mechanics. Long stride; great extension. Odd delivery, medium leg kick, peculiar hand break and arm action yield above-average deception.

Fastball: Sits 91-94; will bump as high as 96. Shows tailing action up and heavy sink in the lower third. Tough to square up; groundball machine. Moves the ball around the zone well. Deception and command pad overall quality. Grade: 50

Slider: 83-86 with late horizontal darting action at its best. Occasional two plane depth with bite. Works it as a chaser away from same sided batters and back foots it against LHB. Sits fringe-average; flashes average potential; not a weapon pitch at projection. Grade: 50

Changeup: Firm offering between 86-88; maintains arm speed but lacks optimal feel. Tumbler with modest fade down in zone; usable against LHB, won't challenge average or better hitters. Clear third pitch. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Showed plus command his first two minor league seasons when he simply filled the zone with heavy sinkers. Worked hard in 2019 to refine secondary pitches and eliminate prior FB heavy sequencing. Unfortunately that yielded a well below-average walk ratio. Control and command likely returns near previous mark with likely move to the bullpen. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Development of pitchability and secondary pitches needed to maximize profile and reach back of the rotation ceiling. More realistic potential ceiling is that of a long reliever or sinker slider one inning low-leverage guy; especially if the FB velocity returns. Overall a solid org soldier with a chance that should provide emergency depth for his big league club.

Physical Description: Ideal frame. Big strong, sturdy frame. High waist; long levers. Broad shoulders; strong upper body; thick lower half. Physically maxed. Impressive work ethic; student of the game.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; long, deceptive deep arm-circle beyond backside. Tilts to clear arm through extremely fast and powerful arm stroke. High 3/4 arm slot with high effort delivery. Repeats well. Long strider. Hides the ball well.

Fastball: Inconsistent velocity. Occasionally sat below-average around 89-91 in '19; reportedly averaged 93 mph, scraping 96 this summer. Firm heavy life through the zone; moderate sink in the lower third. Tough to square up and drive. Avoids the heart of the plate and isn't afraid to work inside; moves the ball around the edges of the zone. Deception and command pad the overall quality. Grade: 50

Slider: Used sparingly over my looks. Sits 82-85 with low efficiency, low spin gyroish movement. Inconsistent execution; flashes near average, sits below-average. Modest swing and miss, predominantly against RHB. Grade: 45

Changeup: Good pitch. Sits 83-85, has feel and is thrown with conviction. Maintains arm-speed with optimal velocity separation from FB. Features late tumble with solid fade at its best. Grade: 50

Control and Command: FB command is borderline above-average at times. Command of his secondary pitches significantly lags behind, near below-average. Frequently gets ahead and keeps himself in pitchers counts. Nibbles at times hunting for strikeouts. Occasional FB heavy sequencing against same-sided batters. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Older prospect that put up impressive numbers across A+, AA, AAA and the AFL in 2019. Close to a finished product and recently added to the 40-man roster, Mattson lacks a loud carrying tool but has a successful track record and the ingredients of a potential low leverage reliever.

Physical Description: Tall; wiry build. Broad shoulders that slope; high waist; long levers; average core and upper body strength. Above-average athleticism. Plenty of room to fill out and get stronger. Former standout HS soccer player. Intelligent. Strong work ethic.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; above-average arm-speed; 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort delivery. Long stride with good extension. Crossfire finish and deep hand break yield impressive deception.

Fastball: Sits 88-91 t92; mostly upper-80s. High efficiency; well above-average backspin; good movement profile. Shows tailing action up and moderate sink low. Tough to square; tough to lift; keeps the ball in the yard and often on the ground. Projects solid average command; overall quality padded by movement and deception. Below-average velocity will give him a smaller margin for error at the big league level. Grade: 45

Slurve: Sits 78-83; manipulates movement showing 2/8 depth with tight rotation and late bite. Occasionally drops his arm slot down a tick yielding more traditional slider shape; primarily short horizontal single plane break. The sweepy breaker is commanded well and leaned on heavily; often thrown back-to-back and in FB counts when he's behind. He's comfortable backdooring it and back-footing it. Likely a solid average offering; I'm bullish and see above-average potential. Grade: 55

Splitter: Underutilized. Sits 83-85. Inconsistent but shows feel. Maintains arm speed; tunneled nicely off FB. Unpredictable late tumble and fade at its best. Pounded low out of the zone as a chaser; potential to eats bats and generate weak ground balls in the lower third. Significant gap between what is and what could be; has shown significant gains since draft day. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Advanced pitchability. Does his best to live on the corners. Attacks all four quads; frequently adjusts eye level. Pitches backwards in FB counts; occasional slurve happy sequencing. Locates FB well glove-side; occasionally struggles arm-side and up in the zone. Secondary command surprisingly not far behind FB. Overall command will have to exceed average to have impact at the big league level. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Crafty pitchability southpaw that could easily surpass my modest expectations. Backend SP highest outcome ceiling with velocity bump, consistency gains within secondaries and improved command. Big league spot starter or long reliever a more likely outcome.

Physical Description: Medium frame. Sturdy compact athletic build. Above-average athleticism; average strength for position. Baseball rat. Impressive leadership and work ethic. Physically mature.

Hit: Open stance that squares on load; hands high at the ear; busy active hands pre-load; upright stance with a slight crouch and wide base. Leg kick timing mechanism opens body up to clear hips on load; chokes up and shortens to a small stride or toe tap when behind in the count. Circular path to and through the ball with a two handed finish; average bat speed. Patient but often over-passive approach. Shows the ability to grind out at-bats, take his fare share of free passes and is tough to strikeout. Struggles against above-average or better velocity and secondaries. Ingredients and potential of a fringe-average hit tool, but approach and deficiencies make a below-average outcome more likely. Grade: 40

Power: Flashes fringe-average raw in BP, rare over-the-fence pop is predominately to the pull side. Contact oriented, all fields line drive approach. Has enough raw to turn on the occasional mistake, but extra-base power is limited to when the ball finds a gap or is hit into a corner. Grade: 30

Field: Above-average defender. Smooth fluid actions. Moderate range that plays up due to good instincts. Efficiently sound footwork; quick first step; strong pivot skills; average hands; smooth quick transfers. Makes good reads; anticipates hops well; moves well to both sides and handles difficult plays okay. Capable defender anywhere on the infield dirt. Not flashy, but an adequate defender with consistent execution. Grade: 55

Arm: Gets the job done. Clean arm actions and solid mechanics yield above-average arm-strength that's passable at short. Decent accuracy with crisp velocity and optimal carry. Has enough arm to throw over-the-top across the diamond with steam from deep in the hole. Grade: 55

Run: Above-average runner; consistent 4.23 - 4.26 clocks down the line. Gets up to speed quickly and runs the bases well with solid instincts. Grade: 55

Overall: Potential glove first, big league utility type if the bat exceeds modest expectations and the stars align. More realistically a solid emergency depth piece that provides value to Baltimore's high minors affiliates.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2

Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall athletic body; lean and strong. High waist; long limbs; square shoulders that slope; thick strong lower half. Impressive instincts and quick twitch athleticism. Moderate projection remaining, room to fill out in chest, shoulders and overall strength. Missed entire '18 season with labrum tear in his throwing shoulder.

Hit: Square stance; hands high at the ear; noisy setup; busy active hand load; crouched from a super wide base. Modest toe-tap trigger. Slightly above-average bat speed. Quick from the trigger to the contact point; not much drive or torque; swing is more hands than bottom half. Shows discipline; appears more passive than patient; handles velocity; ok at reading spin; will get caught looking at the above-average or better secondary offerings. Currently a well below-average hitter, Sparks has the ingredients of a potential fringe-average hitter. Grade: 45

Power: Fringe-average raw in BP, with potential for more pop if his body fills out. Line-drive oriented stroke; doesn't lift the ball much; line drives have lots of top spin and don't carry; power can play from gap-to-gap as doubles variety. Hit tool deficiencies and current lack of strength and swing plane significantly limit over-the-fence power. Speed and instincts on the bases should pad extra base totals. Grade: 30

Field: Above-average defender. Enough speed and defensive prowess to man CF. Gets good jumps and takes solid efficient routes; speed mitigates mistakes. Grade: 55

Arm: An impact plus tool on draft day, an unfortunate labrum tear has sapped the overall arm strength to solid average at present. Long and loose arm action; fluid release; sets feet when throwing to get momentum behind the ball; throws on a line with optimal carry. No longer a weapon but solid average. Grade: 50

Run: Impact tool. Borderline double-plus straight line speed. Quick out of the box; reaches near top speed swiftly and accelerates on the turn at first; kicks it into another gear on the bases. Wheels will turn singles into some doubles. Aggressive base stealer; immaturity can run into outs at times. Grade: 60

Overall: Drafted as a tooled up prep developmental piece back in 2017, Sparks has logged just 78 pro games thanks largely in part to a torn labrum that cost him the entire '18 season. The cancellation of the '20 season did Sparks no favors either as he's Rule V eligible after next season and has yet to escape complex league rookie ball. The defensive profile and speed are solid enough to keep him in the conversation, Sparks literally just needs to stay healthy, fill out and refine his swing. An intriguing lotto ticket with pop-up potential, Sparks is worth keeping an eye on next season.

Physical Description: Short and stocky. Medium frame. Sturdy, well proportioned build. Sloping muscular shoulders; strong core; thick strong lower half. Noticeable upper body strength and big strong forearms. Quick-twitch athleticism. Limited physical projection remains.

Hit: Square stance; hands above the letters; upright stance with a slight crouch and wide base. Toe tap timing mechanism during load. Quick, strong hands generate solid average bat speed. Short compact swing; quick to the ball. Linear bat path with modest loft. Has pitch recognition and knowledge of the zone; consistently walks at an above-average or better clip, padding the overall hit tool value. Patient not passive line drive approach; waits for something he can drive. Lacks discipline: below-average strikeout rates; exposed by above-average velocity and average or better secondaries. Potential fringe-average tool that's likely settles below-average. Hit tool will ultimately determine big league future and role. Grade: 40

Power: Fringe-average raw in BP. Approach and bat path limits over-the-fence power potential. Essentially a line drive machine that can pepper the gaps with well struck balls when he's hot. A slap and dash guy whose wheels should help him pad extra-base stats. Hit tool deficiencies likely sap overall in-game power production. Grade: 30

Field: Above-average defender. Reads the ball well off the bat. Solid routes to the ball. Athleticism, instincts and double-plus speed help mitigate occasional mistakes. Covers plenty of ground; great at tracking balls to both sides and retreating back towards the wall. Occasionally tested and beat coming in on balls. Overall a solid and capable above-average defender. Grade: 55

Arm: Fringe-average velocity. Shows optimal carry but lacks consistency. Probably stretched in RF but solid enough to hand in a pinch. Sound fundamentals on tag-ups, gears up and gets everything behind it; max-effort throws with moderate accuracy. Grade: 50

Run: Double-plus speed with regular 4.10 to 4.17 clocks down the line. Quick out of the box; reaches top speed quickly and moves well around the bases. Smart instinctual runner with a track record of taking extra bases. Will go first-to-third and stretch singles into doubles when opportunity permits. Big league stolen base potential likely significantly sapped by hit tool deficiencies; impact potential with improved consistency at the plate. Utilizes speed well on defense, gliding smoothly from gap to gap; speed helps mitigate defensive mistakes. Grade: 70

Physical Description: Tall frame; square shoulders; lean, mature strength over bulk; durable build. Plus makeup. Average athleticism and instincts. Has bloodlines: son of former first overall pick and All-Star Phil Nevin. Injury history includes: Tommy John surgery in High School, hamstring (2016), broken hand (2017) and two separate quad injuries (2018).

Hit: Square stance; high hands; busy setup; upright stance and wide base. Deep load and modest toe-tap trigger. Quick strong hands generate plus bat speed. Impressive hand eye coordination; smooth swing; great extension. Solid bat-to-ball skills. Long levers naturally yield a rather long swing, making him susceptible to average or better off-speed. Advanced approach: patient not passive; shows the ability to walk at a solid clip and limit strikeouts. Grinds out long at-bats. Polished hitter that should easily reach his projected ceiling at the plate. Grade: 55

Power: Shows above-average raw in BP; HR predominately to the opposite field. Hits the ball hard often, just fails to consistently lift. All fields line drive approach; swing plane and approach limit over-the-fence game time pop. Shows the ability to produce a respectable amount of extra-base hits, but likely just a fringe-average tool against big league pitching. Grade: 45

Field: Likely a 1B only profile; has also received reps at 3B and corner OF though. Solid average defender at 1B. Shows soft hands; able to get good extension off the base; good pick; works well around the base; lacks large range but enough to play; not highly athletic but can handle 1B with ease. Slow first-step at 3B; solid body control; shows mobility to the ground; steady hands and smooth actions. Appears at times like he's playing in slow-motion; the game just speeds up on him at times. Limited looks in OF. Appears to have a solid first step; fringy reads and routes; range is slightly below-average. Ability to play there in a pinch; not optimal full time or long term. Lack of ability and limited athleticism likely push him to 1B with occasional depth spells at 3B. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength, capable of starting a solid double play. Throws have carry, hold plane, accurate from the line; careful and accurate feeding pitchers at first while playing 3B. Solid average tool. Grade: 50

Run: Well below-average runner down the line; takes some time to get out of the box and reach his cruising speed. Short strides; isn't a threat to steal or go first to third; won't clog the bases or run into many outs. Instinctual runner that shows slightly better than his well below-average speed. Grade: 40

Overall: Modest second-division regular potential if the power exceeds my expectations; more realistically a solid bench bat or platoon corner infielder that sees the bulk of his time at 1B.

Physical Description: Small compact frame; athletic build. Skinny torso with wiry strength; frame appears maxed. Strong baseball IQ; impressive makeup. Has bloodlines: father Joe coached for the Twins and Tigers; brothers Tanner and Trey were both drafted by the Twins.

Hit: Open stance that squares on load; hands above the letters; upright stance with a slight crouch and wide base. Toe tap timing mechanism; quick direct path to the ball; average bat speed. Spray hitter who goes gap to gap. Shows discipline and decent pitch recognition; walks a ton. Tough to strike out; grinds out at-bats waiting for something he can handle. Presently a fringe-average tool with solid average potential. On-base ability further pads the overall potential value. Grade: 50

Power: Fringe average raw that up until 2019 played near the bottom of the scale. Hit over power approach and bat path limit his future over-the-fence pop; recent gains should yield near below-average power if his hit tool reaches projection. Grade: 40

Field: Solid defender that profiles best long term at 2B. Average range that plays up because of instincts and a quick first step. Reads angles well and makes more difficult plays than he should. Good footwork when he gets to the ball; exceptionally soft hands; quick on the pivot; turns an excellent on the double play. Adequate enough to play SS in a pinch but 2B is his primary future. Grade: 55

Arm: Fringe-average arm strength. Quick release and quick transfer on pivot; ball comes out cleanly with optimal carry but lack impressive velocity. Throws accurately on the run. Throws from deep in the hole don't have the zip required for him to hang at SS. Grade: 45

Run: Good athlete with quality running technique; gets out of the box quickly and hustles down the line. Smart baserunner who picks his spots and reads pitchers well. Will take the occasional extra hustle base. Grade: 50

Overall: Hitterish middle infielder with modest second division regular upside. Lack of a loud carrying tool puts enormous pressure on the bat; rumored to be getting reps in CF and possibly 3B, versatility could provide a boost as a potential bat first super utility guy.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 7 (LAD)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall athletic build; lean but sturdy frame. Broad shoulders; average upper body and core; strong lower half. Injury history includes: Tommy John surgery May of 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; tall and fall operation. Deceptive low 3/4, almost sidearm delivery with moderate effort. Slight pause, high leg kick, hand break and plus arm speed yield great deception. Repeats fairly well; foot strike flexed and stiff at times and arm slot occasionally wanders.

Fastball: Power sinker that sat 94-98 prior to a massive velo drop before shutdown and eventual TJ surgery in May of 2019. Pounds the FB low in the zone yielding copious amounts of ground balls and weak contact. Deception and inability to square or lift pad the overall value. Every reason to believe the velo returns and possibly increases as he settles back in from rehabilitation. Grade: 60

Slider: Sits 84-87 with tilt and impressive two-plane break. Shows the ability to throw for strikes and chase. Consistent release point; works it to both sides of the plate. Thrown with confidence; not afraid to double up. Has the late break and bite to project legitimate put-away potential. Flashes above-average; should reach projection with further pro instruction and continued reps. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Prototypical power reliever; lives in and around the strike zone with below-average command. Frequently gets ahead early; can nibble a bit too much when he's ahead searching for a strikeout. FB misses are predominately glove-side. Impressive groundball tendencies: above 60% since draft day. Difficult to lift, just one HR surrendered in 80 1/3 MiLB innings. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Power sinker, slider bullpen arm that could reach the big leagues as soon as this season. A recent Rule V selection, Pop has legitimate high-leverage upside; more realistically a solid low-leverage groundball machine that bridges the gap to the late innings.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 217 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: XL frame. Sturdy 6' 5" 217 pound list. Above-average athleticism. Broad shouldered; even halves; above-average upper body strength with a strong and thick lower half. Likely maxed out physically; has filled out nicely the last 12-18 months. Injury history includes nerve inflammation in right bicep that shut him down in early '21.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; tall and fall operation. 3/4 arm slot with plus arm-speed and a high effort delivery. Long strider with average extension. Average deception from waist high leg kick and hand break. Frame and arm slot yield natural downward plane. Effort and inability to repeat hinder control and command.

Fastball: Double-plus velocity; sits 95-98 occasionally scraping triple digits. Shows angle to the plate and decent arm-side run. More of an elicitor of weak contact than a swing-and-miss offering. Ability to fill the zone and command the pitch has stepped forward over the past 12-18 months. Grade: 60

Slider: Slurvy breaker that sits 82-85 mph. Shows sweepy 10-4 action. At its best with more conventional slider shape: downward tilt with late, sharp bite. Works heavy glove-side as a chaser; can also sneak it in the zone to steal strikes. Overall an effective above-average swing-and-miss offering. Grade: 55

Changeup: Sits 85-87 with improved feel; now thrown with conviction while maintaining arm-speed. Features impressive late tumble and moderate arm-side fade at its best. Sequences well off FB; willing to double up and throw when behind in the count. Pours it in the lower third and works the corners when he's at his best. Challenges same sided batters; very tough against LHB. Elicits swing and miss and induces a great deal of weak contact. Will flash plus on occasion but overall a potential above-average weapon. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Still a significant gap between control and command but his ability to fill the zone has taken a step forward. Able to spot all pitches in or just beyond the zone. Flashes the ability to spot secondary pitches for strikes. Will lose the zone at times when his mechanics are off. Athleticism and swing and miss ability covers some of those sporadic deficiencies. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Improved strike throwing and more consistent secondaries have mitigated a great deal of the past reliever risk in Cabrera's profile. Uncertainty around his recent injury gives obvious pause, but Cabrera's stock has risen, catapulting his prospect status. A solid summation of above-average or better pitches yields the ability to miss bats and generate weak contact. Overall there's mid to back of the rotation potential.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Ideal pitchers build. XL frame: every bit of listed 6'4" 200 pounds. Broad shoulders that slope; average upper body and core; high waist and long limbs. Above-average athleticism: multi-sport athlete in HS. Minimal physical projection remaining. Injury history includes: biceps tendinitis (2018) and shoulder surgery (2019).

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; tall and fall operation. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and a high effort delivery. Arm slot wanders, occasionally dropping down a tick to a standard 3/4. High leg kick; exposes the ball behind his back; long arm path; short stride; average extension; lead arm pulls torso open early; recoil after release a bit violent; hard landings first-base side. Frame and slot generate natural downward plane. Rushes and loses tempo often; overall easy mechanics, just struggles to repeat.

Fastball: Sat 90-94 prior to shoulder injury; regularly showed the ability to hit upper-90s prior to the draft. Shows imposing arm-side run and the ability to miss bats at its best. With below-average command and two years of lost development, regaining velo will be paramount. Grade: 55

Curveball: Shows flashes of a high spin rate, above-average breaking ball that sits 78-82. Arm slot wanders a bit, yielding both 11/5 and 10/4 shape. At its best around 78-80 when it shows tight rotation with 11/5 depth and sharp bite. Gets firm and slurvy in the low-80s. Shows the ability to mix it early in the count for called strikes; tough on RHB as a swing-and-miss put-away offering. Further pro instruction should yield a solid big league offering. Grade: 55

Changeup: Sits 82-85; Firm tumbler; mild fade with solid late vertical drop. Not a bat-misser; ground ball pitch with off-barrel contact. Has moderate feel and maintains arm speed; showed below-average command. Development will ultimately influence big league role. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Shows flashes of fluid well repeated mechanics that yield near average command. More often than not, issues repeating yield spotty command. Has the attributes of solid pitchabilty: pitching backwards and attacks all four quads. Sequencing occasionally predictable as he's heavy FB/CB. Will nibble hunting for strikeouts, resulting in long at-bats and free passes. Without significant gains, the short arsenal and limited command profile probably better suits him for a reliever role. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Denaburg has the size and raw arsenal to project as high as a first-division middle of the rotation stalwart. Unfortunately, injuries have limited Denaburg to just 20 1/3 IP since being drafted in 2018; clouding his future projection. The development of his CH and evolution of his command will be paramount for him to carve out a role in a big league rotation. His biggest battle however will be simply getting and remaining healthy as recurrent shoulder issues are a huge red flag. I'm bearish until he proves the shoulder issues are truly behind him. That being said, a healthy and productive 2021 season could elevate his stock back into role 50 or better territory.

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Ideal pitchers build; sturdy potential inning eater. XL frame: every bit of listed 6'3<94> 225 pounds. Broad shoulders that slightly slope; average upper body and core; high waist and long limbs. Lean, but strong lower half. Above-average athleticism. Impressive work ethic and leadership qualities. Minimal physical projection remains.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive operation. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Above-average deception from letter high leg kick and hand break; claws a bit behind the back during long arm path. Average stride; good extension. Frame and high arm slot generate a natural downward plane. Slight inverted-W on plant. Slight head whack; recoil after release yields occasional hard landings first-base side. Good rhythm. Easy, fluid and athletic motions that are repeated fairly well.

Fastball: Plus offering; high spin rate; sits 93-96 t98. Explodes out of the hand and gets on hitters quick; arm speed and deception pad perceived velocity. Features angle and modest life; occasional arm-side run; riding life when he climbs the ladder. Generates weak contact low and overpowering whiffs in and out of the zone. Solid average command. Grade: 60

Curveball: High spin rate power curveball; sits 79-83 with tight rotation,11/5 depth and sharp bite. Manipulates the movement occasionally showing more slurvy break with darting action and tilt. Backdoors the 11/5 hammer early in counts to steal strikes and buries it low as a spike pitch for swing and miss. Tough on LHB, absolute murder on RHB as a put-away offering. Exceptional feel; above-average command. Grade: 60

Changeup: Firm high-80s off-speed. Gaining feel; thrown with conviction while maintaining arm speed. Features late tumble and modest arm-side fade. Predominately utilized against LHB. Elicits moderate swing and miss and off-barrel weak contact. Offering has made significant gains with pro instruction; projects solid average. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Above-average control with potential solid average command. Shows advanced feel and pitchability. Polished strike thrower that fills the zone. Attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level to avoid predictable location; sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. FB consistently around the plate; can land or expand with CB and CH. Focused, competitive mound presence. CH maturation and increased usage is paramount to avoid predictable sequencing. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A surprise over-slot second day draftee in 2019, Allan has thrived developmentally under Mets tutelage. Blessed with size, composure and commanding presence, Allan's well rounded arsenal is anchored by an imposing plus FB/CB combo. Expect impact innings, strikeouts and leadership from this big right-hander. Overall there's frontline SP upside, with a solid mid-rotation role a more likely outcome.

Physical Description: Ideal pitcher's build. Tall and sturdy. Broad shoulders; average upper body; soft middle; high waist; long levers. Power bottom; strong thick legs. Physically matured. Missed most of the 2018 season with blood clot issues in his pitching shoulder. Multiple undisclosed IL trips in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; drop and drive. High 3/4 arm slot, above-average arm speed with a max effort delivery. Violent, inconsistent mechanics; inverted w. Early hand break exposes ball behind the back; minimal deception from modest leg kick.

Fastball: Plus velocity with modest movement profile. Sits 93-95 t97; predominantly flat with mild tailing action. Control over command. Average offering that likely plays closer to above-average out of the bullpen where velo likely ticks up. Grade: 55

Curveball: Hard power curve. Sits 80-83 with tight rotation and deep 11/5 shape at its best. Arm slot wanders occasionally giving it unintentional slurvy depth. Shows the willingness and ability to throw it for strikes early in counts; best utilized as a spike chaser beneath the lower third. Legit put-away hammer when it's on. Occasionally flashes plus; realistic above-average potential. Grade: 55

Changeup: Low usage offering. Sits 86-88 lacking optimal velo separation. Firm tumbler; insufficient fade. Lacks feel and consistency; frequently neglects to maintain arm-speed, guiding it to the plate. Likely scrapped in a relief role. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Keeps the ball around the zone; elevated walks a product of chasing strikeouts and violent inconsistent mechanics. Predictable FB heavy sequencing early on, and CB for the strikeout. Most of these issues are likely mitigated when he's moved to the bullpen. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Otto's biggest obstacle is his health, he simply needs to prove he can stay on the field. The profile is much easier to palate with even modest command gains. His fastball and power curve are likely solid enough on their own to keep him in the conversation when filling out a bullpen. Overall there's modest role-40, low leverage or long reliever potential; with a more realistic outcome a role-30 high minors up and down depth arm.

Physical Description: Short, stocky build; mild slope to broad shoulders with a long torso, long limbs; barrel chest and sturdy thick lower half. Thick body that will need to be maintained; physically maxed out.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; drop and drive; tilts to clear arm through extremely fast and powerful arm stroke. High 3/4 arm slot with high effort delivery. High leg kick; long stride with impressive extension. Inconsistent mechanics: timing and explosion towards plate varies; arm-slot wanders. Foot strike flexed and extremely stiff at times. Falls hard first base side.

Fastball: Pumps consistent double-plus velocity, sitting 95-97 t99. Shows late arm-side run and riding life; heavy sink when it's pounded in the lower third of the zone. Has control; offering has below-average command. Generates weak contact low and overpowering whiffs in and out of the zone. Misses are predominantly glove side and low. Grade: 60

Slider: Inconsistent; lacks feel. Sits 86-90. Firm short horizontal cutter action around 89-90. Occasionally shows a more optimal sharpness with tilt and bite around 86-87 mph. Swing and miss is predominantly chase pitches out of the zone. Struggles with control, heavy usage out of the zone glove side; greater feel and tightened break can push the offering to average; without it's fringy at best. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Inconsistent mechanics limit control and command. Relies on velocity to bail out lack of command. Predictable sequencing, leans on the heat early and often; mixes in SL only when ahead as a chaser. Standard power reliever control over command profile. Struggles to limit walks; lacks consistency locating off-speed offerings in zone. Flashes feel for off-speed offerings but consistency wavers; fastball can be scattershot Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Significant gains with mechanics, command and improved consistency in the slider are necessary for me to squint and see a productive big league future. There's modest role 40 reliever potential should some of that come to fruition. A more realistic future is a decent role-30, high minors depth arm - a solid lotto ticket given the upside of his velocity and mound presence.

Physical Description: Ideal pitcher's frame. Athletic, wiry build. Average torso; high waist with broad shoulders that slope and long levers. Average core; sturdy lower half. Impressive athlete with excellent coordination and fluid actions.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; tall and fall. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Long arm path. Simple well repeated delivery. Moderate deception from high leg kick and arm speed.

Fastball: Sits 91-94; tapers off to 89-91 after turning the lineup over. Sinks it in the lower third; modest arm side life elsewhere in the zone. Average command. Misses are predominantly glove side and unintentional spikes low. Likely plays up in shorter stints, closer to average. Less than optimal velocity will give him a smaller margin for error at the big league level. Grade: 45

Curveball: Sits 80-83 with tight rotation and late 11/5 action at its best. Has the late break and bite necessary for it to effectively play as a bat misser at the big league level. Rolls in the occasional cement mixer but feel and consistency is trending in a positive direction. Grade: 50

Changeup: Underutilized but a solid average offering. Sits 82-84. Has feel; maintains arm speed; tunneled well off FB with optimal velocity separation. Features late tumble and fade. Thrown almost exclusively to LHB. Further pro instruction and reps should push it to average. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Fringe-average control and below average command; capable of throwing strikes but struggles to consistently find the zone and hit the glove. Lack of strength and long arm path hurt command; FB has average command: secondaries significantly lag. Pitch sequencing can be FB heavy and predictable at times. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: A solid summation of near average offerings, the profile's main deficiency is a substandard FB and command that has regressed to below-average. Rumored to possess the ability to hit as high as 97 mph, Tarnok has been a low 90s guy that can't hold velo deep into his outings over my live looks. Should that velocity return, there's some back of the rotation upside or high leverage relief potential. Without the velocity he looks more like a spot starter or long relief project.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 250 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L

RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Large imposing 6'7", 250+ pound frame. Broad shoulders with mild slope; long levers; average core with a soft middle. High waist; strong legs and a thick lower half -- a sturdy workhorse frame capable of eating innings. Limited physical projection remaining with minimal strength gains to be had.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate to max effort in the delivery since refinement. Long arm path that starts below the belt on windup. Moderate deception from delivery, hand break and leg kick. Utilizes tall frame, long levers and high arm slot to generate steep downward plane. Has made great strides mechanically considering his size, but often struggles to repeat; arm slot occasionally wanders and hard falls often pull him offline.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 occasionally scraping as high as 96. Firm heavy offering with just modest run. Works it to all quadrants of zone; misses predominately glove-side. Holds velocity deep into outings and maintains velocity from the stretch. Fringe-average command. Extension and downhill plane pad the percieved velocity and overall quality. Grade: 60

Curveball: Sits 76-81 with tight 1/7 action and sharp late break at its best. Has inconsistent shape and feel; shows less optimal slurvy depth at times that lacks bite. Primarily a chase pitch out of the strike zone against LHB. Overall an inconsistent but solid offering with average potential. Grade: 50

Changeup: Has feel; tunnels it well and maintains arm speed. Quality velocity separation from FB; sits around 83-85 with fade and solid tumble. Heavy usage, comfortable throwing the offering in any count to both right and left-handed batters. Elicits both swing and miss and weak contact; will occasionally hang. Flashes above-average and sits fringy; likely settles in-between. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Muller's size, long levers and limited athleticism effect his ability to repeat; subsequently limiting his command profile upside. Pitch counts can run up and he's prone to the occasional wild spell. That being said, he lives around the zone and relies on quality of stuff and pitchabilty over precise location. His advanced feel and ability to sequence help mitigate some of the mechanical issues, but Muller will likely always be a stuff over command type. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: A well rounded arsenal of potential average or better offerings and pitchabilty give Muller solid back of the rotation potential. The lack of a true put-away secondary offering and less than optimal command bake added risk into the profile. His handedness and ability to reach the upper 90s could yield a solid high leverage reliever safety net backup plan.

RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Short, stocky; compact frame; big strong body. Broad shoulders; low waist; evident core strength; thick and strong lower half. Noticeable upper body strength and big strong forearms. Surprising athleticism; quick and agile behind the plate. Modest physical projection remains for additional good weight. Impressive leadership and work ethic. Injury history includes broken hamate in left hand in 2019.

Hit: Lots of tinkering with mechanics since draft day. At Baylor, Langeliers had a square stance with his hands set deep off his back shoulder; a high back elbow with a slight crouch and wide base. He has since moved to an open stance with his hands at the letters, away from his body. The body remains upright, but there's more of a crouch with a more optimal load. His hands are quick through the zone; with a modest toe tap trigger and short fluid stroke. Strong hands generate above-average bat speed. Average pitch recognition and bat-to-ball; lack of discipline yields below-average strikeout and walk rates. Hunts fastballs, limited production against above-average or better off-speed. Presently a well below-average tool with fringy potential; the development of the bat will ultimately influence his big league role. Grade: 45

Power: Impressive above-average raw in BP; should play solid average in-game as the hit tool matures. Aggressive damage oriented approach; uses the entire field with over-the-fence pop predominantly to the pull side. Has enough strength and lift in his swing to carry to the deep alleys. Extra-base hits will pad the power production and value of the tool. Grade: 50

Field: Fundamentally sound and rather polished. Athletic and nimble behind the plate. Low crouch. Broad shoulders and size present a big quiet target. Receiving skills continue to improve; frames well; softer and more stable with the glove; no longer stabs and drifts; hands and wrists are strong. Handles balls in play and plays at plate exceptionally well. Athleticism and footwork yield solid blocking skills. Demonstrates impressive leadership and grit. Near above-average presently, with enough flashes of plus for me to believe it settles there long term. Grade: 60

Arm: Impact tool. Occasional elite pop times; consistently sits double-plus around 1.84 - 1.90 seconds with sound footwork and fast transfers. Shuts down the running game. Strong lasers that hover off the ground with impressive accuracy. Snap throws behind aggressive runners are a regular occurrence, keeping the opposition grounded. Grade: 70

Run: Average runner for his position with present below-average speed. Will lose some speed as rigors of catching take a toll on his body. May annually swipe a base or two; should be able to help on the base paths, occasionally scoring from second or stretching singles into doubles. Heads-up player whose instincts and hustle will prevent him from being a clogger. Grade: 30

Overall: Impressive blend of physicality, acumen and fundamentals. The hit tool is raw and its development will be necessary to reach a first division ceiling. Regardless, there's enough defensive prowess to play the strong side of a platoon role behind the dish or net the everyday role for a second division team.
