Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Sturdy, physically-advanced frame with room to fill out in the upper-half; tapered shoulders, strong arms that could carry more muscle with maturity. Lower-half nearly maxed; thick, muscular thighs and calves. Shows athleticism and want on the field. Injury history includes a tricep injury in 2019. Frame reminds me of current MLB catcher Robinson Chirinos.

Hit: A once-compact base is recently more wide and comfortable; open stance with the feet outside of shoulder-width; weight favors the backside with a toe-tap timing mechanism. Hands sit high near the ear with a raised back elbow before dropping to the letters into load. Changes leg kick from high and pronounced down to a stride at times. Plus bat speed generated from direct bat path and engaged, strong legs. Passive over patient approach in brief stateside stint. Still raw; big gap in projection. Overall, a below-average hit tool padded by power. Grade: 45

Power: Impressive raw power; plus bat speed and strength yield regular home runs to the pull field in BP; warning track power to the opposite field currently. Makes a conscious effort to drive the ball in games; body and swing should help the power translate in-game but the approach may ultimately hinder home run totals long-term. Grade: 50

Field: Likes to vary the set-up; crouched to upright to on a single knee. Average defender behind the plate; makes expected plays. Feet can be slow on pitches out of the zone at times; average blocking ability; suppresses balls in the dirt well; framing needs improvement. Grade: 50

Arm: Double-plus arm strength; pop times in the 1.92-2.02 range with effortless carry and a quick release. Anticipates runners well; always ready to make a throw; unafraid to back-pick runners sleeping. Accuracy less than desirable at times; bounces throws to second base or throws offline. Overall, a plus tool considering accuracy with double-plus potential long-term. Grade: 60

Run: A well-below average runner; not a base-clogger, but laboring strides and conservative approach on the basepaths will hinder overall potential in the future as the body continues to mature. Knows his limits on the bases; not likely to beat himself. Grade: 30

Overall: Extreme risk with the profile; not only is Gomez still young with just 15 games under his belt stateside but his average defense and marginal hit tool bring risk to even a backup role at the big league level. Gains with the hit tool could propel his ceiling to an everyday profile, but a reserve role is more likely.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/S
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium build with average strength throughout; squared shoulders, beefy forearms, high waist, stocky legs near physical projection. Torso may continue to fill out as he reaches maturity. Shows athleticism on the field; moves well considering the position. Can switch throw. Injury history includes a hamstring strain, quad issues, a concussion, and fracture of the patella.

Hit: Open stance; slight crouch to form a wide base. Fluid hands rest on the shoulder before perking into load. Hands are nearly as far back as possible at load; back elbow up, front elbow nearly locks. Rolls front foot over upon high finish. Appears more comfortable from the right side. Stiff lower half. Above-average bat speed generated from quick hands; swings lack lower-half engagement which hinders the quality of contact; shows a feel for the zone and displays discipline at the plate. Overall a well-below average hit tool padded by his ability to take free passes. Grade: 40

Power: Inconsistent raw power most apparent to the pull field when hitting from the right side. Patient approach may also hinder his ability to drive the ball early in counts. Mechanics issues with the lower half compound deficiencies, but remaining physical projection and continued pro reps should allow the power to play at below average levels long-term, scraping double-digit home run totals across a full season. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average receiver behind the dish; athletic movements with solid glove skills; quick glove transfers with adequate blocking abilities. Twitchy feet and can steal strikes with framing. Grade: 55

Arm: Pop times in the 1.95-2.10 range with a strong arm; inconsistent accuracy that can be fixed with continued pro instruction. Textbook throwing mechanics for a catcher straight from behind the ear. Throws from the knees are inconsistent. Despite double-plus pop times, the arm plays more plus with accuracy concerns. Grade: 60

Run: Below average runner; 4.38 home to first; faster and more athletic than the average catcher running the bases. Quick twitch movements should allow him to take the occasional extra-base and get back against strong pickoff moves, but will not be a base-stealing threat. Grade: 40

Overall: Seigler's display of athleticism and raw physical tools are his calling cards as a prospect. Although there is still projection remaining with his hit tool, it is difficult trying to justify a path to a first division regular role for him long-term. With his strong arm and defensive abilities, he could play as a possible everyday player on a struggling team or a platoon guy that could be leveraged with match-ups. Most likely, it is a reserve role at the highest levels.

Aug 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Wiry frame; squared shoulders, long arms, high waist, wide hips with long thighs and legs. Lacks definition throughout. Likely 10 lbs over list. Frame reminds me of Yordano Ventura.

Mechanics: Stretch-exclusive with a high 3/4 slot generated from a tilt-to-clear motion. Twitchy movements; struggles with repeatability. Hooking action yields plus arm speed yielding modest deception. Lacks downhill plane and gives hitters an early look out of the hand.

Fastball: 96-99 with modest arm side run; explodes out of the hand but struggles to command consistently. Pitch tends to get flat in the lower third and misses within the zone get barreled consistently. Double-plus velocity that likely plays more plus when considering the command and movement profiles. Grade: 60

Slider: 88-90 flashing above-average but sitting below average. Command is inconsistent; at its best, the offering flashes late bite beneath the zone as a chase pitch. More often, it lacks the necessary teeth entice hitters to swing and tends to nibble with it when throwing in the zone. Likely settles in at fringe-average long-term. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Fringe control with below average command. A relief profile all-the-way due to pitch mix and strike-throwing issues. Misses the glove with both offerings. Highly predictable sequencing with misses in the zone getting punished consistently. Walks will be an on-and-off problem long-term. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Peguero's impressive velocity continues to intrigue and he has played the opener role on multiple occasions in 2021. His ceiling is a middle relief arm out of the bullpen, but his command will need to show gains to realize that potential. More than likely, he's an up-and-down option with a chance to stick if he gets hot long-term which isn't out of the realm of possibility considering the volatility of bullpen arms.

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 1
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: A fairly average frame that lacks definition throughout. Shoulders slightly tapered, lanky limbs, trim waist, and long legs. Twitchy athlete on the field. Injury history includes a torn right labrum in 2018 and multiple facial fractures from hit-by-pitch in 2020. Overall frame reminiscent of former MLB outfielder DeWayne Wise.

Hit: Squared stance; deep crouch to form a wide base; hands at the letters through load. Short stride with virtually no leg kick. Above-average bat speed generated from compact stroke and quick hands; tends to get long against fringe or better off speed on the outer third. At his best, he sprays line drives all over the field and favors contact to power; leveraging his legs to steal hits or take the extra base. Unafraid to work counts, generating fair share of walks and strikeouts. Swing-and-miss comes mostly in the upper quadrant and outer third. Shows ability to lay off spin down. Overall, a fringy tool with little projection remaining. Grade: 45

Power: Shows above-average raw but more fringe-average in-game; occasionally sells out at the expense of contact; approach refinement may hinder overall power numbers. Shows power to all fields but favors the pull field. Minimal projection remaining. Grade: 45

Field: Solid-average defender; slowly starting to play more left field as the frame reaches projection. Lacks the instincts necessary to play center every day but could fill in as needed. Steady overall with a Rajai Davis-like glove that profiles best in left, but could stand in center long-term. Grade: 50

Arm: An average arm; shows carry with throws staying on line. Arm would play in right field fine; shows enough strength to play any spot in the grass. Has taken a step back since shoulder surgery. Grade: 50

Run: Easy plus runner with potential for double-digit steals across a full season. Aggressive on the base paths almost to a fault; fearless mentality. Quick out of the box with strong, pronounced strides to get down the line. Not likely to regress from current ability. Grade: 60

Overall: Whitley remains a high-risk profile; his swing-and-miss and injury history continue to make an everyday role less likely as he progresses through the minors, but he'll continue to get every chance as a former first rounder and possible power/speed threat. His ceiling for me is a bench bat, but more likely an up/down emergency type long-term.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 6
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, lanky frame. Trim with sloped shoulders; long arms and legs with a high waist. Lacks definition throughout; near physical projection but not likely to add more than 10-15 more lbs.

Delivery & Mechanics: Slings from a high 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort; delivery lacks consistent release point and timing. Hides the ball well and generates deception with extension. No fall off on the followthrough. Ball exits the hand nicely; delivery most consistent when the body stays linear toward the plate.

Fastball: 89-92 t94 with two variations in the same velocity band; two-seamer shows riding life similar to a conventional four-seam fastball; four-seamer has cutting action consistently yielding soft contact. Consistency with delivery would help command; overall a fringy offering with potential for average given his impressive movement. Grade: 45

Curveball: 76-78 with sweeping, slurvy action; flashes above-average but sits below average; slows arm and motion; lacks depth necessary to generate consistent swings and misses. Grade: 40

Changeup: Sits 81 with fading action; shows feel but lacks depth; enhances and compliments fastball well. Despite below average movement, fade and feel helps the pitch play up. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Above-average control with fringy command; fills the zone with all three pitches but inconsistencies with motion hinder command, especially with the curveball. Control: 55 | Command: 45

Overall: Acquired as part of the deal that sent Bundy across the country, Peek has the chance to be a touch-and-feel starter to finesse his way through lineups. While he won't overpower or dominate, if he is able to lean on his fastball/change-up complimentary offerings, there is a chance for a long relief or spot starter role. More than likely, it's an emergency up-and-down arm.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, wiry frame; significant room to add strength throughout but gains likely minimal; tapered shoulders with long, slim arms; sunken chest with a trim waist; belt buckle sits high with long, slender legs. Lacks definition throughout lower half; massive, NBA-sized feet. Near physical projection. Movements are not as loose as expected; frame reminds me of MLB reliever Carl Edwards Jr.

Delivery & Mechanics: Comes from a high 3/4 armslot with moderate effort; Quick wind-up, downward plane, and long levers yield deception in the delivery; repeats fairly well thanks to overhead glove action prior to hand break; works quickly. Hides the ball well. Stiff arm action; slows delivery on offspeed from the stretch; uncomfortable with a true slide step. Fields his position well; ball comes nicely out of the hand. Competitor on the mound; bulldog mentality.

Fastball: 92-94 t95 on a downhill plane with riding life; modest armside run. Goes flat when thrown down in the zone. Will move it around all four quadrants, but inconsistent command; gets hit hard when thrown in the middle and lower thirds; overthrows occasionally. Pitch is best when he lives up in the zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: 73-76 with inconsistent shape and feel; sits below average but flashes above average occasionally with tight, 11/5 rotation. Mimics the slider movement too often; gets his hand underneath occasionally, causing the pitch to float into the right-handed batters box. Pitch likely to settle in fringy due to inconsistent feel. Grade: 45

Slider: 85-87 with bite; flashes plus but sits fringy. Pounds the outer third to same-sided hitters; movement tends to get loopy when thrown for strikes. Shows feel; likely to settle in at average thanks to command of the pitch. Grade: 50

Changeup: 81-84; lacks consistent desired velocity; shows fade but rarely generates swings and misses; often yields soft contact or foul balls. Lacks conviction; flashes average but sits below average. Grade:

Control and Command: Fringe-average control with below average command; throws enough strikes to avoid trouble due to walks but will misfire with the fastball and curveball more consistently than desired; shows more feel with the slider for strikes at times over the fastball. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Knight's four-pitch mix makes him an intriguing rotation option, but his tall frame and potential fastball/slider arsenal that would likely play up in a bullpen role makes his case even more curious. To stick in the rotation, feel for a third pitch is vital. His fastball is rumored to hit 97 on occasion; if that comes more consistently in a relief role there is high-leverage upside. As a starter, he's likely to be an up-and-down spot starter or long relief arm out of the bullpen.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 7, NYM
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, imposing frame near physical projection; well-proportioned with long arms, high waist, and thick thighs and legs. Better athlete than average for his size; moves well on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works quickly from a 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort; crossfire action. Body starts facing the away dugout; repeats well from the windup; high leg kick and slight hitch after hand break yield deception. Falls off toward third base despite landing on the first base side of the rubber. Motion is more conventional from the stretch.

Fastball: 88-90 t91 with cutting action; not as powerful as frame would suggest; finesse and feel pitch with inconsistent command. Not afraid to go inside to right-handed hitters; used primarily in the bottom third of the zone. Gets flat when left up. Despite below average velocity band, movement and deception allow the pitch to play fringy. Grade: 45

Slider: 80-83 with slurvy movement. Flashes average but sits below average; lacks consistent shape and feel. Generates swings and misses at the bottom of the zone; misses are mostly horizontal. Gets hand under the pitch occasionally, causing the pitch to lack bite. Grade: 40

Changeup: Below average flashing above-average at 83-84; overlaps slider velocity at times; straight change with limited movement. Slows arm slightly; shows ability to throw for strikes. Lacks conviction; designed to keep hitters honest against the fastball. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average control with below average command; crossfire delivery hinders ability to consistently fill the zone and hit the glove. Changeup used rarely, especially deep in counts. Relief future possible considering heavy two-pitch mix. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Despite his tall, workhorse frame, Smith's stuff doesn't match the physicality he displays on the mound. Considering his deception and arm slot, a relief future may be the best long-term role; however, if he can find some movement and feel on his changeup, it may allow his sneaky fastball to play as a starter. More than likely, it is a long relief or low-leverage option out of the bullpen.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Small, compact, wiry frame; spark plug type with tapered shoulders and a trim waist; short legs with twitchy movements; room to add strength throughout. Plays with emotion. Frame similar to Marco Scutaro. Grandson of former AL Rookie of the Year Curt Bleffary.

Hit: Open stance gives off Curtis Granderson sensations; hands back at the letters; chokes up slightly; small crouch forms a wide base; weight favors the back side; above-average leg kick into load; hands stay quiet throughout. Short, compact path to the zone; contact-oriented swings; allows the ball to travel deep; uses center and opposite fields often especially against same-sided pitching. Pesky hitter; will foul off good pitches and limits hacks at chase pitches. Struggles to barrel the ball consistently; slap approach; legs will allow him to steal an occasional infield hit. Below average hit tool, but ability to control counts and take free passes helps the profile. Grade: 45

Power: Below average power; frame and approach are not geared for power. Over-the-fence thump favors the pull field heavily but occasionally will go to center. Legs will boost extra-base numbers, likes the ball down and in to lift and separate. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average defender; moved around in college; best position is at shortstop, where he features good range going both directions. Quick transfers with solid instincts in the field. Will occasionally boot routine ground balls; fixable with continued pro instruction. Solid footwork. Grade: 55

Arm: Textbook throwing mechanics with good accuracy; above-average arm strength; throws through the bag. Arm would play best at shortstop or right field; would be overqualified for second base. Grade: 55

Run: Home-to-first times range from above-average to plus 4.10-4.15; shows the ability to hurry infielders and will find an infield hit with his legs. Shows calculated aggressiveness; takes the extra base when he knows he can make it. Regular base-stealing threat currently that may settle down as his frame reaches projection and climbs through the minor leagues. Grade: 55

Overall: 2020 draftee Servideo will enter 2021 with just 17 games over the previous year, suggesting there may be some rust to knock off as he gets acclimated to professional baseball. At his ceiling, he's a pest-type player that works at-bats, steals bases, and does the little things well on a baseball field. Considering his inability to barrel balls consistently, his speed, as well as the versatility he showed in college, he's more likely destined for a utility or platoon-type role at the next level.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round CBB
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, physically-developed frame with little room for additional gains;sloping shoulders with long arms; wide hips with thick thighs and legs. Some unorthodox movements in the box; frame and athleticism reminds me of Sean Casey.

Hit: Upright, open stance with feet just outside of shoulder-width; hands start at the letters but move away from the body and back heading into load; weight favors the back foot but will occasionally lunge at breaking pitches; plus bat speed but a long swing; needs to get started early. Swing and miss issues, especially against same-sided pitching and spin. Save a shortened bat path adjustment, hit tool figures to play below average. Grade: 40

Power: Legitimate plus raw power that favors the pull field heavily; capable of moonshot home runs, but contact issues may suppress home run totals at the next level. Grade: 55

Field: Average, steady defender in the outfield capable of making the expected plays; lacks speed necessary to cut off balls in the gap or fill a highlight tape. Mostly center currently, likely a corner spot long-term. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm; uses long levers to show carry on throws with minimal effort. Throws are accurate; arm could play at any spot in the grass. Grade: 60

Run: Long, galloping strides in the outfield and on the base paths; lacks twitchy acceleration and likely to lose a step as frame reaches physical projection. Still an average runner at the next level capable of a handful of stolen bases across a full season. Grade: 50

Overall: Stowers' size and power are exciting, but the approach deficiencies may never allow the power to reach its true potential. Considering his struggles against lefties, a platoon or utility outfield option is a realistic outcome at the next level, with his floor being an organizational soldier-type.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Small frame; lacks definition throughout. Lean; square shoulders with average strength in the arms; upper-half is more developed than lower body. Slim legs with significant room remaining to add strength. Shows bounce; twitchy athlete with good hand-eye skills. Canadian prep background.

Hit: Square stance; upright with a wide base; slight bend at the knee. Hands sit above the letters with a raised back elbow; slight coil into load with an average stride; stiff front leg prevents the body from getting out in front. Bat is quick through the zone but tends to lengthen on outside pitches. Works counts; passive early and protects late; uses opposite-field frequently. Overall, fringy hit tool with the potential for average with physical gains. Grade: 45

Power: Frame is not ideal for power; swing generates loft but lacks engagement from the lower half; extra-base hits will go to all fields. Quick bat with physical projection may allow power to improve, but not likely to hit average totals long-term. Grade: 40

Field: Average defender at shortstop; sure-handed, reliable glove with average range. Tracks fly balls well. Comfortable back-handing balls. Makes the expected plays with confident hands, but not likely to fill a highlight-reel. Tends to be passive; could play either spot up-the-middle. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm; clean transfers with a quick release. Action is quick; will show carry on throws through the bag but needs effort and legs into throws. Throws are accurate to the bag. Grade: 55

Run: Double-plus runner; fast, powerful strides down the line. Digs into the dirt with short, choppy strides. 3.96-4.0 home-to-first; capable of easily reaching double-digit steals across a full season. Grade: 70

Overall: Hall has the tools to stick at short; his sure-handed, reliable glove skills and double-plus running ability will carry the profile--he shows the ability to make contact at the plate with bat-to-ball skills, but it's more inside-out bleeders and bloops than consistent line drives. The running ability Hall shows on the basepaths is not always present in the field; an eventual outfield move may help maximize his legs. If he can improve the quality of his contact, there is the chance for an MLB regular role, but more than likely it's a utility middle infield type long-term.

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 CBA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Long, athletic build; slight taper with long arms; high and trim waist with long legs and big feet. Still room to add modest strength throughout. Undisclosed injury in 2021 has prevented a season debut. Overall frame reminds me of Clay Buchholz.

Mechanics: High 3/4 slot with moderate effort; goes high effort when he needs extra. Busy windup with good pace. Tall and fall motion with clawing arm action. Modest downhill plane. High glovework, coiled leg kick, and plus arm speed yield above-average deception. Impressive repeatability considering all the moving parts.

Fastball: 91-93 t95 with tailing action; flashes riding life when thrown in the upper third. Shows advanced control; works all four quadrants to toy with hitters. Some velocity projection remains with added physical strength. Still some gap between what is and what could be, but added velocity with his command of the offering warrants an above-average grade long-term. Grade: 55

Slider: 78-83; manipulates the offering with slurvy action in the lower velocity band; more traditional slider bite 81-83. Fills the zone and also uses it for chase. Casts occasionally, floating it in arm side. Can improve with continued reps and pro instruction; making it a solid-average offering at the highest levels. Grade: 50

Changeup: Fringy offering 83-85; flashes above-average but currently sits below average. Shows fade arm side but more often lacks the drop necessary to miss bats; struggles to locate glove side. Maintains arm speed and fluidity. Likely develops as a usable offering long-term, not a swing-and-miss weapon. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Above-average control with average command. Consistently fills the zone, especially with the fastball. Stellar walk numbers in his brief pro career. Fastball command is at projection--improvements will come from continued development of the offspeed. Heavy fastball usage that may need to back off at the highest levels. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Between the pandemic and a mysterious injury, Rays fanatics are eagerly waiting on Goss to show his abilities beyond his 17 innings of rookie ball in 2019. This is one of the more intriguing arms in the system to me, with a ceiling of a mid-rotation starter within the realm of possibility. There is relief risk, depending on both his health as well as the development of his changeup. In a bullpen role, his fastball/slider combination would likely play up in both velocity and crispness and his runner's pace on the mound would keep hitters on their heels. Still, with strong control attributes, he'll get every chance to start and has more upside (and risk) than many of the other arms in the organization.

Physical Description: Medium build with long limbs; average strength throughout. Sloped shoulders, high waist, wide hips, strong midsection and thighs. Overall build reminds me of Anibal Sanchez in his Marlins days. Frame is at projection currently. Injury history includes Tommy John Surgery in 2018, a fractured throwing elbow in 2019, and right ulnar nerve surgery in 2020.

Mechanics: High 3/4 slot with moderate effort; full windup with modest pace. Stays fairly upright through motion; tall and fall mechanics give downhill plane with slight head whack upon release. Clawing arm action with plus arm speed, yielding moderate deception. Repeats delivery well. Shows comfort from the stretch and holds runners close.

Fastball: 92-94 t95 with riding life in the upper part of the zone; plays best when located in the upper third, compliments his change up well. Tends to get straight when spotted down. Shows average command with the offering with little projection remaining, although he may find himself in the upper part of the velocity band in a relief role. Grade: 50

Cutter: Shows slider characteristics at 86-88; sharp, sweeping breaker with bite used mostly against same-sided batters. Heavy horizontal movement but does have some depth when the pitch is at its best. Flashes plus but sits more above-average, used more as a put away pitch rather than the more conventional deployment to induce weak contact. Grade: 55

Changeup: 85-87 flashing steep fade into the bottom of the zone; feel wavers at times, casting into the upper part of the zone with floating movement. Maintains arm speed well and causes the fastball to play up when the pitch is working. Flashes plus but likely settles in at solid-average long-term with the ability to miss bats at the major league level. Grade: 50

Screwball: 81-83 with sharp, vertical break. Usage has become rare over time, flashes fade and generates swings and misses consistently in the lower part of the zone; also capable of freezing hitters for called strikes. An easy plus offering considering the rarity of the pitch, the command, and the movement profile, but the usage suggests it may not have an opportunity to make its full potential impact long-term. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Average control with fringe-average command. Shows the ability to fill the zone with each offering; swings and misses out of the zone help to mitigate some shortcomings with command, with misses mostly East-west. Not likely to improve over time; shows enough command to start but recent appearances have been in relief. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Honeywell doesn't dazzle with high-octane stuff, but his four viable offerings that compliment each other in each quadrant help to get him by and generate swings and misses and navigate an order multiple times through. Injuries, which have haunted Honeywell, add to his relief risk more so than stuff or command. This process may already be in the works, with the vast majority of his MiLB appearances coming in relief this season. His stuff and impact will always play best as a starter, but health may necessitate a bullpen role long-term.

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 234 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA (PHI)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Medium, stocky frame; broad shoulders, long arms, barrel-chested with a soft middle; high waist with beefy thighs and legs. Frame is currently at projection. Overall build reminds me of a young Bartolo Colon during his Expos days. Injury history includes elbow inflammation and "slight discomfort" in throwing shoulder.

Delivery & Mechanics: High c slot with high effort; full wind-up with modest pace. Clawing arm action with drop and drive motion. Near elite arm speed yields deception. Lacks ideal downhill plane. Repeats delivery well. Slow to the plate from the stretch.

Fastball: Sinker and four-seam variation; sinker runs 96-98 t99 with heavy bore and swing back action; four-seam 98-100 t101 with modest riding life; explodes out of the hand. Lack of steep plane and extension hinder perceived velocity. Shows command around both sides of the plate; overall, a double-plus offering with no projection necessary to reach grade. Grade: 70

Cutter: 88-91 with horizontal movement away from same-sided batters; compliments four-seam well; heavy usage to righties. Not likely to miss bats, could improve with refined sequencing. A fringy offering long-term. Grade: 45

Slider: Modest usage at 85-88; sweeping action running away from same-sided batters. Pitch lacks traditional slider teeth; blends with the cutter at times. Shows ability to throw for strikes and use as a chase. Overall, a solid-average offering at the MLB level long-term. Grade: 50

Changeup: 88-90 with heavy tumble; inconsistent feel and command. Bounces it on occasion; flattens in the middle and upper thirds. At its best, it shows nasty fade at the bottom of the zone; shows the attributes of an above-average offering long-term. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Above-average control with average command; throws all his pitches for strikes and shows uncanny ability to hit the glove with the fastball considering the near-elite velocity. Will not kill himself with walks; sequencing could be improved among the pitch mix; mainly lessening sinker usage Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Sanchez has alleviated some evaluators' concerns about being a two-pitch pitcher with now a league-average slider and a changeup that flashes plus but sits above-average. His sinker/cutter variants should provide enough wrinkles to help him compete later within starts. He's not the ideal body in a workhorse starter, but his strength and sturdiness should help to mitigate some of his durability risk. For me, it's a mid-rotation arm long-term with a safe backend floor.

Height: 6-2

RuleV: On 40 Man Roster

Physical Description: Athletic, sturdy frame. Vitals appear accurate; modest physical projection remaining throughout; could stand to add muscle in arms and legs. Squared shoulders, long arms, trim waist, with long and lean legs. Build reminds me of Joc Pederson; Moniak's grandfather, Bill, spent six years in the Red Sox organization.

Hit: Relaxed setup; feet away from the plate and slightly open; upright stance with only a slight bend at the knee; hips square, shoulders slightly closed with hands relaxed near the ear. Back elbow up, hands back, and stance closes upon load. Load and swing have some Bryce Harper attributes. Top hand struggles though; forcing lazy fly balls and roll-over grounders. An overall fringe-average hit tool; struggles with quality spin below the zone; pulls front shoulder off the ball at times; struggles to generate consistent leverage with the stroke. Punishes mistakes middle/middle. Shows a solid take-what's-given approach, but contact struggles apparent due to mechanical deficiencies. Grade: 40

Power: Below-average power; weak top hand coupled with spray approach limit the amount of over-the-fence power generated. Average raw the struggles to translate due to struggles with timing, especially with offspeed. Should generate enough gappers and perhaps double-digit home runs totals across a full season with the occasional opposite-field shot, but may struggle to reach average totals long-term considering his outfield position. Grade: 40

Field: Average defender; possibly a tick above-average in a corner but could stand at any spot in the grass. Bananas his routes at times on deep fly balls; glove is steady and reliable; shows instincts in the field. Robs the occasional hit but not likely to fill a highlight reel. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm; makes all the throws necessary of an outfielder, but not a weapon from any spot. Shows solid over-the-top mechanics necessary for an outfield spot. Shows ability to hit the cut-offs with ease, but throws lack significant carry. Grade: 50

Run: 3.98-4.2 times home-to-first; above-average runner leveraging long legs to gallop around the bases; plus times currently but likely to lose a step as the body reaches physical maturity. Solid instincts on the bases; should have enough to take the extra base as necessary and turn in a handful of steals across a full season. Grade: 55

Overall: A former first overall pick, Moniak has failed to achieve the sky-high expectations that come with going so high in the draft. He is approaching his projection and will need to show he has everyday potential in 2021 in order to justify a starting spot moving forward. Unfortunately, his lagging hit tool and the lack of power will hinder his ability to find the lineup on a daily basis, but his solid secondary attributes in the field and on the bases should make for a solid lefty bench bat long-term.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-3

Acquired: 2015 Round 8
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, physical frame. Lower half more developed than upper; thick neck, sloping shoulders. Modest projection remaining in torso; high waist, long, strong thighs and legs at maturity. Build reminds me of Joe Crede.

Hit: Simple set-up; square stance, quiet hands sit near the ear. Feet outside of shoulder-width; upright stance has recently changed to a deep crouch to form a wide base. Pronounced leg kick; lands near original pre-load spot in the box with a heavy hip turn. Above-average bat speed generated from strong lower-half engagement and quick hands. Fairly compact stroke; up-the-middle approach; waits on a pitch to drive. Feasts on pitches down and in. Patient approach but overswings at times, causing a sacrifice in strikeouts and inconsistent quality contact. Average strikeout and walk totals across his minor league career. Overall, a fringe-average hit tool near projection. Grade: 45

Power: Fringe-average power; above-average raw that translates in-game. Could likely post higher totals with some approach adjustments, but takes the Ryan Howard method to power, often using the biggest parts of the park. Lacks the strength necessary for consistent over-the-fence pop; double-digit home runs likely across a full season padded by extra-base drives to the gaps. Grade: 45

Field: Below-average fielder at first; has recently taken on more games there. Still raw at the position; struggles with positioning body correctly to receive throws. Struggles to squeeze throws at times. At catcher, a fringy defender. More finesse with movements. Makes routine plays, A quiet glove with average framing ability. Should be passable at first base, but far from a weapon at either position defensively. Grade: 40

Arm: Below-average arm; accuracy wavers due to lack of carry with throws. Throws remain on-line; misses often vertical, mostly low. Deficiencies may be mitigated at first, but will not be a strength if the profile at either spot. Grade: 40

Run: Below-average runner on the bases with home-to-first times in the 4.21-range. Long, lumbering strides down the line. Not a base-clogging liability, but not a base-stealing threat and not likely to take the extra base. Grade: 40

Overall: Mazeika's profile is risky; as a hit-first catcher, he lacks the necessary consistency offensively to justify an everyday role. At first base, his bat would play down considering the position-and he may struggle to get back up reps behind the plate as organizations typically opt for a more defense-first profile. The most likely outcome is an organizational up-and-down piece, which he has essentially achieved, with his ceiling being a journeyman backup catcher.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-6
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 17
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Small, physically-developed frame; spark plug-type with a wiry upper half; sloped shoulders; wide hips with a thick, sturdy lower half. Muscular thighs and legs. Built like a college running back; twitchy athlete. Little projection left in the arms and chest for strength. Good work ethic; energetic and upbeat presence in the clubhouse.

Hit: Simple set-up; slightly open stance with legs barely bowed. Bend at the knee forms a wide base. Weight favors the back side with a coiled upper-half; hands sit high near the ear, bat rests on the shoulder before perking into load. Pronounced leg kick that closes the stance before landing square. Above-average bat speed generated from quick hands strong engagement from the lower half. Up-the-middle approach; shows the ability to take free passes; passive at times. Spoils good pitches but misses mistakes on occasion, especially hanging spin; may cause issues in the upper levels. Legs will generate infield hits. A below average hit tool that plays more fringy thanks to legs and on-base ability. Grade: 45

Power: Frame and approach are not geared for power; will overswing at times. Surprising pop considering his height. Legs will help extra-base numbers; over-the-fence power predominantly to the pull field. May crack double digit totals across a full season, but not likely to reach average long-term. Grade: 40

Field: Confident, reliable defender in the field. Strong routes and textbook glovework. Glove could play anywhere in the outfield grass. Combination of solid routes and speed should help limit extra-base hits. Grade: 60

Arm: Fringy arm; accurate to cut-offs but throws often lack significant carry. Sets feet well for throws but will short arm mechanics occasionally. Arm is passable anywhere in the outfield, but not likely to be a weapon at any spot. Grade: 45

Run: Plus runner; base-stealing threat at any bag with home-to-first times ranging from plus to double plus: 4.10-4.13. Figures to lose a step as the body reaches maturity, but shows good instincts on the bases. Shows calculated aggressiveness that should help stolen base totals reach well into double-digits at the big league level. Grade: 60

Overall: Dean has the makeup of a solid fourth or fifth outfielder--a good clubhouse presence, speed that can be a difference-maker deployed in late-game and pinch-run situations, and a steady glove that would provide versatility, although he is best-suited for center field. The on-base ability coupled with his speed makes his profile intriguing; if he can make more consistent hard contact, there is a sightline for an every day role. With his struggles against quality spin that he figures to see more of as he progresses, a utility or bench role is the most likely outcome.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 19
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Fairly average frame with no projection remaining; sloped shoulders with long arms. Wide hips with thick, muscular thighs and legs; NBA-sized feet. Shows athleticism on the mound; has a prep background in football. May have lost around 20 lbs recently--seems true to 215 list currently. Frame similar to former MLB pitcher Jorge De La Rosa.

Delivery & Mechanics: High 3/4 slot bordering over-the-top with high effort; stretch exclusively with a high leg kick and strong lower half engagement. Leg kick and extension yield moderate deception. Nearly crossfires delivery; settles back foot on the edge of the first base side of the rubber. Hitter gets a look at the ball on reachback, but the arm is quick enough to prevent pitch tipping. Hard fall to the third base side. Delivery is mildly violent.

Fastball: 91-93 t94 with cutting action running in on opposite-sided hitters. Induces weak contact when located; can be tough to barrel when it's thrown on the corners. Heavy usage that will get thrown in any count; high trust and conviction with the offering. Pitch plays best in the upper third of the zone. Loses life at the bottom of the plate. Grade: 55

Curveball: 75-77 with 12/6 break; slow breaker with average spin. Used almost exclusively to same-sided batters. Will freeze hitters with big break; slows the arm on occasion. Casts the pitch at times, giving proper rotation without desired bite. Overall, a fringy offering with little projection remaining Grade: 45

Slider: 86-88 with average, slurvy action; flashes plus but sits average with late bite. Predictable locations; gets too much plate at times. Under-utilized pitch especially when ahead. Could be used as a chase more. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Average control with below average command; fills the zone and will live and die with the fastball; highly predictable sequencing and locations may hinder his ability to skate by shortcomings with location. Well-repeated delivery has helped limit free passes. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Davidson's high fastball usage and the lack of trust with his curveball present significant reliever risk to the profile. His firm fastball from the left side is encouraging, but the relentless use with the pitch may prevent him from making it through an order multiple times. There is a possibility for a backend starter long-term, but I don't see enough to warrant that as a likely outcome. Most likely, Davidson is a middle relief arm or long man out of the pen on a competitive club long-term, where his fastball/slider combination may play up.

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Medium, stocky build; squared shoulders, average strength throughout the arms and torso. High waist with thick, strong thighs and calves. Near physical projection currently with minimal room to fill out in the chest and waist. Pliable behind the plate; creative setups and crouches. Likely 10-20 lbs above 180 list. Brother of current MLB catcher Willson Contreras.

Hit: A once-open stance is recently more square with a slightly coiled upper half; hands are quiet and high above the ear--sitting away from the body. Small bend at the knee with feet slightly outside of shoulder-width. Hands reach back for power position into load; upper half further coils and lower half closes into strong leg kick; front foot lands open; heavy weight transfer to the front side through swing. Average bat speed generated from frame and hands; swing tends to get lengthy at times. Approach is damage-oriented; looking for a pitch to drive in the air regardless of count; strike zone awareness coupled with a bat path that maximizes time in the zone helps limit strikeout totals, but will swing over low spin when behind. Overall, a fringe hit tool with limited projection left. Grade: 45

Power: Below average power that is padded by gap and warning track drives all over the diamond. Consistently swinging for extra bases; length of the swing hinders the quality of contact at times; shows raw power to all fields that translates in-game, but over-the-fence power can be more fleeting at times considering the approach. Grade: 45

Field: An average defender behind the plate with strong receiving skills; works well with pitchers and shows game-calling ability. Quiet glove yields deft framing abilities. Reports of lack of concentration appear to be cleaned up; room for improvement with blocking. Smooth behind the plate but lacks twitch with movements; makes expected plays. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm; pop times in the 1.95-2.03 range; good accuracy to the bag but will bounce throws on occasion; arm path tends to get long. Shows resilience to get the ball out; transfers are inconsistent; ball pops out of the glove on occasion. May continue to progress with continued pro instruction. Grade: 55

Run: Flashes average home-to-first times 4.2-4.3; likely to settle in at below average being behind the plate and as the frame reaches projection. Better runner than the average catcher; won't be a base-clogger, but also not going to be a base-stealing threat. Home-to-first times might give fringy times long-term, but lack of base-stealing and taking extra bases will hinder the overall grade. Grade: 40

Overall: Contreras has the makeup and body for a catcher--while he lacks a loud, carrying tool some of the backup catcher profiles possess, the summation of his tools make an everyday future more likely than some others. Because of the limited defensive ceiling, there is pressure on his hit tool to realize his true role potential. A platoon or bench role is most likely with an everyday future well within the realm of possibility.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L

RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Prototypical starter's frame: tall, long, and strong with broad shoulders; long arms with a high waist and a slender, yet sturdy base. Same physical proportions as Andy Pettite. Prep background in basketball; good athlete on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Fires from a high 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort; quick wind-up with a well-repeated delivery. Deceptive motion; lots of moving parts, hides the ball well and generates impressive extension. Head stays quiet through motion; ball leaves the hand exceptionally well. Shows poise and mound presence.

Fastball: 91-94 t96 flashing nasty, late armside run. Pounds the outside corner against opposite-sided hitters. Riding life when thrown up in the zone; controls the pitch well with command gains still possible. Overall, an above-average offering with plus potential long-term. Grade: 55

Slider: 81-85 with traditional slider bite; flashes plus. Shows the ability to throw for strikes; command is inconsistent beneath the zone. An average offering with minimal gains necessary to reach its projection. Grade: 50

Changeup: Legitimate plus offering showing fade and break at 80-84; generates swings and misses from both sides of the plate; shows feel and conviction. Same velocity band as the SL is less than ideal, but different plane, usage, and movement help mitigate the risk of the hitter timing it. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Average control and fringy command - there is projection with the profile; big gap between what is and what could be. Well-repeated delivery and advanced sequencing could help command with continued pro instruction. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: While many felt Shuster's position in the draft was a bit generous by Atlanta, his recent bump in velocity and advanced pitchability make him intriguing as a starting pitcher. His work ethic should help him rise through the minors quickly and makes a backend starter role a realistic route long-term.

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 199 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, lanky frame with plenty of projection remaining; sloped shoulders, sunken chest, high waist, long legs with big feet. Frame lacks definition; plenty of room to add strength through development. Could easily develop into a Matt Garza-like frame at projection. Tommy John Surgery in May, 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: High 3/4 slot with moderate effort; impressive arm speed generated from tall-and-fall windup; good pace with slight hesitation at leg kick, yielding modest deception. Clawing arm action with a pronounced reach. Struggles with lower half timing on occasion; repeats the rest of the delivery well. Noticeably more comfortable from the wind-up. Calm, competitive presence on the mound.

Fastball: 93-95 with heavy tailing action; high sinker usage with a four-seam sprinkled in. Mixes the four-seam up in the zone, flashing riding life. Velocity bands similar with each variant. Struggles with consistent command; tends to miss glove side suggesting slight over-rotation in the legs and hips. Plus velocity plays down considering risk with the profile and command deficiencies. Grade: 55

Curveball: Slow, 77-79 offering with 12/6 action flashing sharp break, flashes plus but sits fringy currently. Slows arm and casts the pitch occasionally, especially when trying to throw it for a strike. Lacks consistent desired velocity. Spotty usage; lacks consistent feel. Big gap between what is and what could be; likely settles at solid-average long term. Grade: 50

Changeup: Primary secondary offering at 83-85; movement mimics the sinker with modest fade beneath the zone; shows advanced feel. Maintains arm speed. Additional gains necessary with the movement profile to make it a plus pitch at the highest levels; an above-average outcome most likely. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Fringe-average control with well below-average command currently; likely to raise both a grade with continued pro instruction. Fills the zone enough to start, but misses the glove consistently with each offering. Movement profiles for each pitch have mitigated some shortcomings with command. Predictable pitch sequencing. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: White is a true wildcard; prep pitching is a risky bet to begin with, but Tommy John surgery in 2019 and COVID-19 in 2020 have taken away from valuable development time. His profile could change drastically between now and the end of his 2021 campaign, and while a back-end starting role is certainly possible, the risks warrant more of a spot starter/low leverage reliever role at this point.
