Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Mike Kinsela

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 221 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round CBA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Stockier, physical build with good strength throughout, built well, limited if any projection remaining on frame.

Mechanics: Sikkema has a good bit of funk to his operation, including purposeful variation of his arm slot as well as an extremely crossfire stride. It's not what one would call a pretty delivery, but he's on time, creates a ton of deception, and is able to repeat well given the strength of his body.

Fastball: The fastball is where the variations in arm slot come into play the most, will work in 88-92 mph range with plus arm side life from lower 3/4 slot, will raise up to overhand slot at times and can work in more 92-95 mph range, does a nice job mixing and matching and keeping hitters off balance as a result, variations should play both in starting and bullpen role. Grade: 55

Slider: More of a slurvy look but comes with power and bite, generally in the 78-84 mph range with variations dependent on slot, can sweep it across the zone away from lefties as well as bury it under the hands of righties, pitch is plus at it's best but will get under it and leave it fat at times, should be successful as a bat-misser at the highest level. Grade: 55

Changeup: Third pitch but a solid one, generates good sink, trusts it and throws it with conviction, likely won't be a bat-missing pitch but can keep righthanded hitters off of his primary offerings, tunnels well off of fastball. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Sikkema pounded the zone in his first foray into pro ball with only 1 walk in 10.2 NYPL innings in 2019, and consistently threw strikes at Missouri across several roles. The delivery and funk keep the command from being pinpoint but it's at least average command with a good chance to start. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Sikkema has a chance to provide value in several roles, his upside is that of a backend starter and/or late innings reliever, though the floor here is that of a middle innings matchup guy in the big leagues thanks to his funk, stuff, and strikes. He was viewed as a bit of a reach at draft time at pick 38, but it's looking more and more like the Yankees got a good player here.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Long legs and high waist make Medina look taller than his listed 6-1. Similar build to the Mariners Justin Dunn. Room for positive projection and added strength. Long arms and slopped shoulders. Prototypical pitchers body.

Mechanics: Upright operation with loose and free arm, and at times, his lower half. His somewhat crossfire delivery from a high three quarters leads to strike throwing issues. Significant timing issues despite simplistic operation. An adjustment to his arm action was made mid-2019 that resulted in a strong second half.

Fastball: High octane offering at 95-97 mph on average, sitting 96.3 mph. Average spin rate at 2350 with average vertical movement. Cuts his fastball some giving the pitch some action and side spin but limiting how well it plays elevated. Will touch 99-100 mph in game, so it's more than just a workout number. Struggled to command the pitch through his first 14 starts in 2019 and found his fastball+curveball command seemingly overnight in mid-July. Plus potential that plays above average at the moment. Grade: 55

Curveball: 11-7 breaking ball with two plan movement and average drop. Medina's go to secondary, and at 80-83 mph it's a bat misser. Like all of his arsenal showed significant command improvement in the second half of 2019. Tunnels off fastball well, to create a strong one two combination with a 15-20 mph velocity separation. Grade: 55

Changeup: From start to start and inning to inning this pitch's quality can drastically fluctuate. Early in the season the pitch was effective in spurts often flattening out or missing the zone badly. As his mechanical changes began to take shape the pitch would flash plus a few times an outing and by and large was an effective secondary versus left handed batters. Despite the promising developments late in 2019, the pitch's inconsistency land it in fringe-average territory with an average ceiling of changes hold. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Frankly, Medina's control and command profile is maddening. It was an easy 30 early in the season where he struggled to consistently find the zone. As his mechanical changes took shape Medina's strike throwing entered into above-average territory as he walked just 15 batters across his final 45.2 innings. The late season Medina did a good job of controlling his fastball later in the season particularly in the upper quadrants. He showed the ability to land his curveball to the lower quadrants, and his changeup to his armside. Whether or not this holds is a very real question and gives us some trepidation around his grades here. Is the 50/45 control/command arm we saw in his final the real Medina or a blip in an otherwise frustrating professional career? Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Timing issues plague Medina's ultimate outcome despite a simplistic tall and fall operation. Over the first 14 starts of 2019 Medina struggled to find the zone, and when he did he was often hit hard. Over this period his operation was consistently out of sync. Around the all-star break an adjustment was made to Medina's arm action that dropped the side height over 2 inches. Through this change Medina was able to keep his arm more on time. In turn this allowed Medina to stay online with the plate while drastically improving his leg block. This in turn boosted his strike throwing tremendously. Over his first 58 innings Medina walked 55 batters. While over the final 45.2 he walked just 15. Not only did his control jump two grades over this period his stuff did too, as he added 4-5 inches of horizontal break onto his fastball in those final 8 starts. His pitch shapes were more tightly clustered too. Essentially the adjustment in Medina's slot set off a series of improvements across the board. Now the bad news - Medina's instructs data and reports look more like the first half of 2019 than the glorious end of season run. If he's able to replicate those improvements and sustain them long term then Medina will reach the lofty ceiling many have promoted over the years. However, with his pattern of inconsistency we view him as a fringe-average major leaguer with backend rotation upside. Elite stuff with pitchability concerns.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA, MIN
RuleV: 2019

Physical Description: Slender frame with projection at 6'2", 185 pounds. High waisted pitcher with long levers. Strong lower body, upper body has more room for strength to be added. Had shoulder surgery with the Twins, whom he signed with in 2015, before joining the Yankees in the Jake Cave trade prior to the 2018 season.

Mechanics: Gil pitches from the third base side of the rubber, triggering the operation with a higher leg kick and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Arm action is a bit long, though the arm speed is very impressive. Gil gets elite extension, topping upwards of seven feet, though he shortens up his extension with his slider. Release points can use some refinement, as they can get a bit inconsistent.

Fastball: Gil has an upper-90's fastball that has been tinkered with throughout 2020. The Yankees worked on adding more riding action to the pitch and eliminating a two-seam variant of the pitch. With this, Gil has averaged 17 inches of vertical break at the alternate site, making the pitch much more potent at the top of the zone. The pitch does get good horizontal life, as well, getting near nine inches of run. Pitch has above-average spin, with spin rates consistently topping 2,400 RPM's. He's touched triple digits in the past and has held velocity throughout starts, as well. Easily a double-plus offering. Grade: 70

Slider: The slider is a newer offering in Gil's arsenal, replacing a high-spin curveball. The new pitch provides some promise, as it sits in the mid-80's with high-spin, coming close to 2,500 RPM's on average. The pitch gets less than half a foot of vertical break, with seven inches of sweep. With it being a new pitch, there is still quite a bit of development to go with the offering. He's got the feel for it, though it could be a tad bit firmer. More than likely to be an above-average offering, at best. Grade: 55

Changeup: Gil throws a hard change-up, averaging just over 90 MPH in 2020. The pitch certainly has good shape and action, with 15 inches of fade and nine inches of vertical break, though the pitch needs more consistency. The spin rates are rather high, topping 1,900 RPM's on average, as well. The Yankees have worked on making Gil tinker with his grip in order to find that consistency, though it has a ways to go. Fringe-average offering with a chance to be average. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Throughout his minor league career, Gil has struggled with throwing strikes, averaging 5.4 walks per nine innings. However, he's worked on finding the zone more consistently with the Yankees, though he's got a lot of work to do in order to get average control and command. Unless there's a drastic turn-around, Gil is only likely to have below-average control and command. Control: 40 | Command: 40

Overall: Gil has shown promising stuff as a starter, though his strike-throwing ability will be what ultimately decides if he stays in the rotation or becomes a bullpen arm. If he does become a bullpen arm, he can become a good late-inning reliever with electric stuff. If he can stay in the rotation, he'd be a back-end piece. Certainly a very fun arm to follow.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Large physically developed frame: broad shoulders with mild slope; long levers; average strength throughout upper body and core; high waist with a strong, sturdy lower half. Frame is likely at projection. Lengthy injury history includes Tommy John surgery in May of 2017 and additional IL stints for minor elbow inflammation.

Mechanics: Semi-windup; tall and fall. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and high effort in the delivery. Short compact arm action. Long stride with above-average extension. Solid deception from waist high leg kick and deep hand break. Frame and high arm slot generate steep downward plane. Choppy but fairly simple and well repeated mechanics on delivery.

Fastball: Sits 93-96. High slot generates a steep plane. Two-seam variant generates heavy sink and hard bore against same-sided batters. Four-seamer features solid arm-side run. Trusts the pitch; attacks all four quads; will attack with it in hitter's counts. Control over command; misses are predominantly glove side and up in the zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sits 83-86. Often misclassified as a slider because of its velocity, shape and high spin rate; utilizes a hybrid spike curve / knuckle curve grip. Shows advanced feel; manipulates arm action to occasionally mix in a softer variant with more traditional 11/5 break. Primarily shows firm two-plane break; more vertical tilt than sweeping action with exceptional bite. Commands the offering exceptionally well; will throw it inside on RHB to steal strikes and back foot it against LHB for chase. Legitimate put-away offering. Grade: 60

Changeup: Firm change of pace offering that sits 87-90. Has feel and thrown with conviction; lacks optimal velo separation and consistent execution. Occasionally slows arm speed telegraphing and guiding the pitch; should refine with further pro instruction. Lacks significant fade but features solid late vertical drop. Thrown almost exclusively to LHB; elicits weak contact and moderate swing and miss. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Control over command. Confident strike thrower; lives in or around the zone. Shows some pitchabilty; attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level and sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. Shallow arsenal that's prone to heavy FB / CB sequencing and may have issues turning over a big league lineup multiple times. Average control and below-average command yields additional reliever risk. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A bit of an anticipated slow burn, Schmidt finally debuted late last season with mixed results. The development of his change-up and command will ultimately determine if he reaches draft day's mid-rotation ceiling, or settles in as a solid backend SP. A less optimal, but solid fallback plan would be a move to the bullpen where his electric FB/CB combo likely yield an impact high-leverage relief arm.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height, lean build, with long levers and room for good physical projection. Low maintenance body type, high waisted and athletic. Shows strong pliability and fluidity in movements.

Delivery & Mechanics: Clean and fluid mechanics but still mastering consistency and repeating motion. Starts on the left hand side of the rubber, begins operation with two quick stutter-steps before triggering his delivery with a moderate leg lift, slight glove raise, and delivers from a lower three quarters slot. Gets good drive from his back leg, dropping heavily over his leg block, with his momentum often swinging his back leg around during finish, falling off to the third base side at times. From the stretch he tones down his operation and simply stretches and fires. Has a tendency to struggle mimicking his release point from the stretch, often sailing his fastball glove side versus right handed hitters. Has continued to improve mechanics since entering the professional ranks.

Fastball: Good movement and average to above-average velocity from the left hand side, will sit 90-93 mph, touching 94-95 mph at his peak. Shows good movement characteristics, showing the ability to create riding life on the fastball when elevated. Made an approach change upon entering pro-ball as the organization asked him to work in the upper quadrants. Control/command woes that detracted from Murphy's profile seemed to fade as he controlled the top of the zone with better results. Struggles to locate gloveside on the inner-half to right handed hitters. Will lose feel for gloveside command from the stretch. Projection to add more velocity in the coming years as he adds good weight. A bump up to 92-94 mph could push this grade a half a measure. Grade: 50

Curveball: Slow bender in the mid-70s, sitting 73-76 mph in early 2019 looks, it shows 1-7 break with some late tail. Doesn't always snap it off with consistency and it will lose shape. His best breakers have deep break and steep vertical dump. Command and control development could push this pitch into average territory in the future. Grade: 45

Slider: A work in progress and point of emphasis for Murphy heading into 2020. How much it has developed over the past 12 months is a bit of a misnomer. In last look it was a slurvy offering in the 81-83 mph range. More horizontal spin axis than his curveball with a closer to 3-9 break, causing it to sweep. Still developing shape and ability to mimic release. The current version of Murphy's slider is a harder, less spin efficient version in the 83-86 mph range. How this pitch plays in game could be a large development heading into 2021. For now it's wait and see. Grade: 45

Changeup: Murphy's strongest pitch. Shows the ability to pronate consistently landing it for swinging strikes versus right-handers as it runs and tumbles to his armside. Thrown with conviction and sold with arm speed, batters have considerable trouble squaring it up and those that do tend to beat the pitch into the ground. Average velocity band of 79-83 mph, showing good separation from the fastball. Not always consistent with release, will lose command of the pitch at times. Grade: 55

Control and Command: A drastic improvement in walk rate was a direct result of change in fastball approach between his collegiate career and early professional days. Due to the movement on his fastball he has a much better ability to land it in the upper quadrants for strikes. This played up the effectiveness of his changeup, a pitch that never showed nearly as well during his time at San Diego. The command and feel for his pair of breaking balls is still coming along. The desire to improve shape and approach tells me the last iteration may not be the current version of Murphy. Showed at least average strike throwing ability out of the draft, but command is still a point of emphasis, particularly from the stretch. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A four-pitch mix and repeatable mechanics with good velocity separation throughout his arsenal. Murphy's ability to tighten his mechanics will lend itself to increased strike throwing. For now he's stuck in a tweener profile without true feel or identity of a third pitch. Left Handed fastball+changeup profile needs to be complemented by the ability to work in and around the zone. Murphy has only shown the ability to do so during a short sample professionally. His track record as an amateur tells a different tale. Assuming his change in fastball approach has led to greater command of his entire arsenal, it's reasonable to see Murphy as a lower leverage multi-inning relief type. The best possible outcome is a backend starter profile. This idea leans heavily on the development of his new slider - a pitch he's yet to throw in an affiliated game - as a viable third option.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall righty with long limbs and broad shoulders. Thick thighs, average butt; upper half has room for some good weight, but doesn't look underdeveloped. Live arm.

Delivery & Mechanics: Three quarters arm slot, mostly, will lean a little and move to a high three quarter at times - perhaps when he's working glove side. Moderate effort in delivery, a tick more from the stretch. Windup is casual with an easy leg kick to the navel before ripping his arm to the plate. Heavy followthrough as his leg swings around, pulls him 1st base side occasionally. Could see the lurch to the plate causing command issues.

Fastball: 92-95 with visible tail; has touched 98. Gets whiffs and pop-ups up in the zone, so it has some ride despite the lower arm slot. Uses early and often, out pitch for Ks. Grade: 60

Slider: 84-87, has decent movement but lacks any real bite. Slurvy, in between shape. Seems to lack feel and doesn't get a ton of whiffs or chase. Will try and steal strikes with it early. Grade: 50

Changeup: 83-86 with good depth. Sells with armspeed and gets swing and miss when it looks like a strike. Struggles to control it. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Below average. Misses in bunches and then has to come into the heart of the plate. This is a significant issue for him and will likely limit him to the pen unless the team can help him make an adjustment. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Starter's frame and arsenal with a reliever's control and command. The fastball is plus but the secondaries are fringy. Even if they improve, the command is still a limiting factor. High upside, high floor type pitcher who has a shot at being a backend starter and is almost a lock to be a big league bullpen arm.

Delivery & Mechanics: 1B, 3/4, athletic, loose, quick arm. Repeats pretty well. He gets solid extension and the effort level is medium. Lots of inconsistencies with release point.

Fastball: 93-95 (96), flashed some decent life up in the zone. Could potentially reach for 98+ in one inning work. Grade: 55

Slider: Mid to upper 80's, flashes quality depth and bite. Shows put away tendencies but is inconsistent. 55 Grade: 50

Changeup: Upper 80's, will flash some solid fade and sink but infrequently. Some noticable slowing of the arm. 45 Grade: 40

Control and Command: Fringe control and below average command currently. Both could take a minor step forward due to his athleticism and his ability to repeat his mechanics. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Physical Description: Lean but muscular frame with long limbs. Looks heavier than 140 already. Powerful for "small" stature at 5'10". Plenty of room for weight, shoulders broad enough to carry more muscle. Live body that's well proportioned. Gets the most from his frame.

Hit: Switch hitter. High hands with a little wiggle, mostly upright with slight knee bend on both sides of the plate. Moderate leg kick both ways. Has slight loft in the swing plane despite the high hands, seems to generate easy bat speed. Low effort swing but the ball pops pretty well. Smooth from both sides, almost a mirror image. Grade: 55

Power: Gets easy bat speed despite smaller stature. Should add strength. Power looks like it will play up more than you would expect due to athleticism. Grade: 45

Field: Tough to gauge in limited action, but he has fluid movements and good athleticism. Subject to change with more in-game action stateside. Grade: 50

Arm: Rumored to be a double-plus cannon, but could change as we get more looks when he comes stateside. Grade: 70

Run: Limited looks, but he moves well and is explosive. Likely to change as body matures. Grade: 50

Overall: A 2018 J2 signing with very little professional experience who has yet to play stateside due to the pandemic. An athletic switch hitter with surprising pop for his small frame. Strong arm will give him a chance to play on the left side of the infield. Tremendous upside and unknown in the current profile, could move up or down this list in 2021.

Physical Description: Big, strong frame that still has a little room for weight. Wide shoulders and long limbs. Legs muscular but not big. Athletic build and moves fine, but definitely a corner profile.

Hit: Upright stance, sits into the knees a bit, hands shoulder level and tight, bat straight up. Legs a little wider than shoulder-width. Very quiet. Loads with minor leg kick to mid-thigh, up and down in the same spot, very little coil. Hands travel up and back. Swing is easy but chops down. Something unnatural about his sequencing, might be pushing, looks like a hitch mid-swing. Swing feels awkward despite the low effort, looks uncomfortable at launch position, back shoulder dips - maybe hands are just late. Average bat speed, looks like room for more if mechanics are optimized. Fringy swing and miss, not awful but more than you'd like; will chase a good breaker. Moderate patience. Grade: 40

Power: Easy pop. Ball jumps off the bat and carries with back spin. Really drives the ball despite average bat speed. Chance for big power here with improvement to the hit tool. Easy plus raw. Grade: 50

Field: Former MI, solid actions and decent hands. Gets himself in position to succeed. Lack of quickness limits range, but he can hold his own. Good instincts and feel. Grade: 45

Arm: Average carry; hits the target off-balance and on the move. Doesn't need to set his feet to be effective. Whips from almost a sidearm slot. Grade: 55

Run: Lumbers a bit. Solid actions, but lacks quickness. Almost like he's moving in slow motion - like his body just doesn't move like it used to. Grade: 40

Overall: Power corner profile with swing and miss issues. Outgrowing his athleticism, but still a chance to stick on the infield with average glove and AA arm because of his feel. There's big time power in the bat, but hit tool issues will limit what he gets to in games. Padres experimented with him at 2B where he could offer a big bat a la Moustakas, but more Ks. Glove, instincts and shifting might make him passable there. More likely a platoon corner bat.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 250 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Round 4
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: XL frame with strong, thick build. Frame is maxed out, no projection remaining; conditioning may be a factor down the road. Broad shoulders, long limbs, strong thighs; power pitcher's build.

Mechanics: Stretch-only; high leg lift starts easy, drop and drive delivery. Longer arm action drops behind the body before coming through at a low-3/4s slot with above-average arm speed. Doesn't repeat that well. Stinson has a shorter stride for his size and as a result gets pretty average extension. Stride foot lands slightly to the first base side giving him a little crossfire action. Low-effort operation, overall.

Fastball: 91-94, T95. Low slot gives fastball solid run with some sink, as well. Looks to steal strikes against lefties by running it back over the plate gloveside, but often misses too far off the plate. Doesn't command it well, in general and gets squared up when left over the heart. Gives up more fly balls than you'd expect from a fastball with his sink. Lacks the zip it had in college and doesn't run quite as much. Grade: 50

Slider: 81-85; sweeper with 2-8 shape. Fringey bite with average movement; fairly consistent but does flash some sharper ones. Tries to steal backdoor strikes with it against righties and uses it for swing and miss gloveside against lefties. Below-average command of the pitch, often misses in non-competitive locations. Tunnels well off the fastball which helps it play up. This pitch is not what it used to be. Grade: 50

Changeup: 77-78; solid tumble with fade. Sells with armspeed, typically, but has a few where he tips it by slowing down. Inconsistent pitch that sometimes lacks depth and resembles a BP fastball. Not much feel; doesn't command well. Used against righties, but it's a liability and often gives up hard contact when left in the zone. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Okay strike thrower; not wild, but doesn't pound the zone. Walks a guy nearly every time he comes into the game. Mostly works east and west, looking to steal strikes on the corners. Doesn't command well to the gloveside, often missing off the plate. Not afraid to open ABs with non-fastballs. Appears to lack confidence in his stuff; often looking to fool hitters and steal strikes rather than challenging them; nibbles early and often and lacks the command to find the edges of the zone consistently. Control: 30 | Command: 20

Overall: Stinson is a big, strong left-hander whose stuff isn't what it used to be. His once live arm hasn't rebounded since his days at Duke and the fastball dips into the high-80s at times now with less run. The slider has fallen off the most and now lacks consistent bite, often rolling in and not fooling anyone. At present, the stuff is underwhelming and the command is poor, leaving the upside here for an up and down reliever for low-leverage innings against lefties. The floor is an org depth relief arm. There's a chance for more if he can find the next gear we saw back in college, but it's been a long time since we've seen it at this point.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 Round 10 (TOR)
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Fairly average, well-proportioned frame. Strong chest and shoulders; slight taper with well-developed thighs and legs. Frame is currently at projection. Build reminds me of Adam Everett.

Hit: Open set up with a slight crouch to form a wide base. Hands at the ear with weight drastically favoring the back side. Crafty approach in the box; average bat speed generated from quick hands. Maximizes physical traits into swing; shows bat-to-ball skills with a slash-and-dash objective. Minimal power but shows good knowledge of the zone, which yields loads of free passes. Overall a fringe-average hit tool padded by limited strikeouts and ability to take walks. Grade: 50

Power: Near bottom-of-the-scale power; 15 home runs across over 700 minor league at-bats. Approach and frame are not conducive to over-the-fence pop. Legs will help to steal the occasional extra base hit. Power is currently at projection. Grade: 30

Field: Solid average defender; moves well but lacks a quick first step on reads occasionally. Strong glove work and shows the ability to steal hits on bloops. Could play at any outfield spot; likely profiles best in a corner long-term. Grade: 50

Arm: Below average arm strength; throws lack significant carry but capable of hitting cut offs and keeping throws on line. Likely a fringe-average tool long-term, not suited for right field. Grade: 45

Run: Above-average runner capable of double-digit steals across a full seasons. Short, choppy strides get him down the line and around the bases. Instinctive runner with strong technique; has enough to steal an occasional gapper in the field. Grade: 55

Overall: Stevenson likely has little room for play either way in his development; he's a textbook role 30 outfielder that may get a shot in the right situation. His speed and ability to handle the stick and control an at-bat will certainly play into his favor, but the lack of power and fielding prowess keep him from having a true carrying tool in the outfield. A valuable commodity to an organization, but not one that should be relied on for significant production for the parent club long-term.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA (SEA)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Above-average height with a good frame. Has some present strength, with room to grow, although he's 23 years old and simply may not.

Hit: Stands slightly open and mostly upright with his knees bent. Hands stay just below his shoulder with the bat resting there until he loads. Weight is evenly distributed prior to the load; he brings his weight to his back foot and raises his hands and the bat high before using a small leg kick to step into the pitch. There's some noise in the load, and his swing can get long at times. He swings on a pretty level plane, but he lacks barrel control and often gets on top of the ball, too frequently drilling the ball into ground on the left side. He shows a solid eye on pitches out of the zone and can lay off difficult breaking balls, but he does swing through too many pitches in the zone. Between his propensity to hit weak ground balls and his consistent poor strikeout rates, the tool plays well below-average. Grade: 30

Power: Flashes average to above-average raw power, and he has taken balls the opposite way, but his game power plays below-average, largely due to his inability to consistently barrel the ball. He has at least average bat speed, and there's some rotation in his swing, so he might be able to tap into a bit more of his raw power if he can make consistent contact. Grade: 40

Field: Listed as a 3B, but he's spent most of his time at 2B in 2021. He shows a solid glove at 3B. He stays low and keeps the ball in front of him and charges the ball with authority. It's average range, although he moves pretty well side-to-side. The package plays up some at 2B, where he shows some comfortability with covering the bag and turning the double play. Makes the routine plays. He unsurprisingly has some familiarity with 2B, SS, 3B, and LF. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm that works on the left side of the infield but plays up some at 2B. Above-average or better arm strength with solid carry across the infield. Throws from several arm angles, including sidearm. Accurate in limited looks at both 2B and 3B. Grade: 55

Run: He's an average runner, and I had him timed 4.26 down the line from the right side in a game earlier this season. Grade: 50

Overall: Gregorio has his moments and will periodically flash some intriguing tools on the diamond, but his continued lack of impact with the bat has him trending like an org. guy. There's perhaps some untapped power potential, but it won't matter if he can't make consistent contact.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 130 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Listed at a rail thin 130 pounds, Marte has gained weight since signing and now appears closer to 160-170.

Hit: Near mirror-imagine swing from both sides. Stands slightly crouched and open with his hands back. Some rhythmic pre-pitch bat movement as it bounces off his shoulder. Small leg kick as he steps into the pitch and closes his stance. Average or slightly better bat speed from both sides and can hit the ball hard when he backs contact. Inconsistent bat path and has shown a tendency to chop at the ball. Needs to improve his pitch recognition; gets fooled and takes some uninspiring swings, particularly on offspeed pitches. Knows when to lay off on fastballs out of the zone. Shows a feel for bunting and can use his legs to get on base. Grade: 40

Power: Showed below-average raw power as an amateur but has added some recent strength. Has mostly operated as a slap-hitter since signing, but the profile has opened up a bit with his new bulk. He's still a likely gap hitter at best, and early signs are he's getting the ball in the air with more consistency, but the in-game power still plays well below his raw power. Grade: 30

Field: Rangy defender at shortstop who moves well to his left and right. Instinctual player who knows where to be in the field. Can make some difficult plays. Grade: 55

Arm: Above-average arm strength, and he has quick hands and gets the ball out in a hurry. Fits at shortstop. Grade: 55

Run: I've been unable to get a recent time on his legs. He was seen as an average runner when he signed. Grade: 50

Overall: Marte was seen as a big-time international prospect in 2017, first signing with the Twins and then the Rays after his first contract was voided following a failed physical. Four years later and he is still stuck in rookie ball, part of which is surely attributable to the shutdown, but his development stalled even before that. Marte struggled to hit in 50 games in 2019, and has yet to show real signs of improvement. He's added weight to his frame, which opens up some possible outcomes, but he's fallen down on the organizational depth chart and will be Rule V eligible this offseason. The odds are against him ever reaching The Show, and he's approaching non-prospect status.

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall with a physically mature body. Strong throughout. High waisted and long levered. Larger than his listed size. Lacks projection. High baseball intelligence and has a desire to succeed.

Hit: Stands upright and open with his weight on his back foot. Keep his right elbow high and hands back. Some pre-pitch bat waggle and hand motion. Uses a moderate leg kick as he loads. Thrusts himself into the pitch. Takes big cuts, with above-average or better bat speed. Ball jumps off the bat when he connects. Lacks bat control and too often makes poor contact, even in batting practice. Swing can get long and it's an inconsistent bat path. Has an aggressive approach and a tendency to overswing. Looks at his best when he does not try to swing for the fences. His long arms allow him to cover the outside of the plate, and he does show some feel for going the other way. Strikeouts will likely be a part of his game until he scales back his all-or-nothing approach. Grade: 30

Power: Plus-plus raw power, particularly to the pull side. Capable of hitting monster home runs in BP. Whippy swing. Power presently plays below-average; balls mostly hit to the gaps. Falls victim to free-swinging, often resulting in poor contact. In his limited DSL debut, he recorded substantially more groundouts than flyouts, which is a genuine concern given the level of competition and his inclination to swing for the fences. Grade: 50

Field: Unrefined in the field. Tracks the ball and moves well enough for his size. Has below-average foot speed. Probably fits best in LF. May get looks at 1B. Grade: 45

Arm: Strong arm with good carry from the outfield. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Accurate in limited looks from his circuit days. Plays in RF. Grade: 55

Run: Recorded below-average times while on the circuit as an amateur. Unable to get looks since signing. Grade: 40

Overall: Castillo received early buzz as a potential top guy for the 2018 J2 class because of his physical maturity and massive raw power, but ended up signing for $350,000. Those traits still exist, but there are genuine concerns about his ability to make consistent contact and questions about where he'll fit in the field. The power is huge, but he's yet to get to it, and there's a reasonable likelihood he never will. He has more potential than an organizational player, but it's going to take significant time and effort to get there.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 CBB (SD)
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, muscular build, particularly in the upper body. Looks heavier than listed weight, no physical projection left.

Hit: Open stance, front heel is off the ground to start. Hands at shoulder height, bat angled over back shoulder. Standard load mechanism. Hands don't move far during the load. Flat bat path. Adept at going with the pitch, can spray the ball to all fields. Shows good bat to ball skills, fights with two strikes. Covers the plate well, though can be beaten with velocity up in the zone. Won't strikeout out a ton, and draws walks. He's not afraid of being behind in the count, he'll be patient to get something he wants to hit. Grade: 50

Power: Any power generated won't be over the fence pop. He might run into a few, but his power will be in the gaps. His frame suggests he might be able to show slightly more game power, but his approach is one of patience and contact. Average raw power doesn't leave much room for growth in this tool. Grade: 30

Field: Athletic enough to stick behind the dish, but also offer versatility at a corner outfield spot. Receives well behind the plate, and moves well behind the plate. Range is limited in the outfield. Just as a catcher, the defense would be average, but with outfield baked in it's a fringe tool. Grade: 45

Arm: Strong arm to throw runners out from behind the plate or the grass. The arm could stick in right field as an outfielder. Grade: 50

Run: His speed is fine for a catcher, but it can limit his range in the outfield. Grade: 30

Overall: Driscoll is a glove first kind of profile. The arm will play wherever the Rays need it to, but that is what is leaned on. Average hit tool means he should never look lost at the plate and it can play in a pinch. The defensive versatility is good, and Driscoll may be in the grass long term, though he has the skills to become a backup backstop in the big leagues.

Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Wiry frame; squared shoulders, long arms, high waist, wide hips with long thighs and legs. Lacks definition throughout. Likely 10 lbs over list. Frame reminds me of Yordano Ventura.

Mechanics: Stretch-exclusive with a high 3/4 slot generated from a tilt-to-clear motion. Twitchy movements; struggles with repeatability. Hooking action yields plus arm speed yielding modest deception. Lacks downhill plane and gives hitters an early look out of the hand.

Fastball: 96-99 with modest arm side run; explodes out of the hand but struggles to command consistently. Pitch tends to get flat in the lower third and misses within the zone get barreled consistently. Double-plus velocity that likely plays more plus when considering the command and movement profiles. Grade: 60

Slider: 88-90 flashing above-average but sitting below average. Command is inconsistent; at its best, the offering flashes late bite beneath the zone as a chase pitch. More often, it lacks the necessary teeth entice hitters to swing and tends to nibble with it when throwing in the zone. Likely settles in at fringe-average long-term. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Fringe control with below average command. A relief profile all-the-way due to pitch mix and strike-throwing issues. Misses the glove with both offerings. Highly predictable sequencing with misses in the zone getting punished consistently. Walks will be an on-and-off problem long-term. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Peguero's impressive velocity continues to intrigue and he has played the opener role on multiple occasions in 2021. His ceiling is a middle relief arm out of the bullpen, but his command will need to show gains to realize that potential. More than likely, he's an up-and-down option with a chance to stick if he gets hot long-term which isn't out of the realm of possibility considering the volatility of bullpen arms.

Physical Description: A fairly average frame that lacks definition throughout. Shoulders slightly tapered, lanky limbs, trim waist, and long legs. Twitchy athlete on the field. Injury history includes a torn right labrum in 2018 and multiple facial fractures from hit-by-pitch in 2020. Overall frame reminiscent of former MLB outfielder DeWayne Wise.

Hit: Squared stance; deep crouch to form a wide base; hands at the letters through load. Short stride with virtually no leg kick. Above-average bat speed generated from compact stroke and quick hands; tends to get long against fringe or better off speed on the outer third. At his best, he sprays line drives all over the field and favors contact to power; leveraging his legs to steal hits or take the extra base. Unafraid to work counts, generating fair share of walks and strikeouts. Swing-and-miss comes mostly in the upper quadrant and outer third. Shows ability to lay off spin down. Overall, a fringy tool with little projection remaining. Grade: 45

Power: Shows above-average raw but more fringe-average in-game; occasionally sells out at the expense of contact; approach refinement may hinder overall power numbers. Shows power to all fields but favors the pull field. Minimal projection remaining. Grade: 45

Field: Solid-average defender; slowly starting to play more left field as the frame reaches projection. Lacks the instincts necessary to play center every day but could fill in as needed. Steady overall with a Rajai Davis-like glove that profiles best in left, but could stand in center long-term. Grade: 50

Arm: An average arm; shows carry with throws staying on line. Arm would play in right field fine; shows enough strength to play any spot in the grass. Has taken a step back since shoulder surgery. Grade: 50

Run: Easy plus runner with potential for double-digit steals across a full season. Aggressive on the base paths almost to a fault; fearless mentality. Quick out of the box with strong, pronounced strides to get down the line. Not likely to regress from current ability. Grade: 60

Overall: Whitley remains a high-risk profile; his swing-and-miss and injury history continue to make an everyday role less likely as he progresses through the minors, but he'll continue to get every chance as a former first rounder and possible power/speed threat. His ceiling for me is a bench bat, but more likely an up/down emergency type long-term.

RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height. Maxed. Thick quads. Bulldog mentality.

Mechanics: Minimal windup. Short, over-the-top arm action. Max effort delivery has been toned down some since signing. More repeatable in pro ball. Falls off toward 1B with a tendency to land violently. Hides the ball well. Quick to the plate.

Fastball: 93-95. Fastball-dominant repertoire. Pitch has some tail. Likes to elevate it but can move it around the zone. Too frequently misses when running it away from righties and the pitch can sail on him when running it up. Generates swings and misses up in the zone when he's locating it, and it plays slightly above its velocity due to his ability to hide the ball. Grade: 55

Curveball: Infrequently throws a 1/7 breaker that shows a good amount of depth. Likes to use it down-and-in to lefties, but I've seen him backdoor it, too. Runs it away from righties. Grade: 45

Changeup: 78-79. Same release point of fastball with a slightly slower arm action. Looks like FB out of hand. Locates it down, usually after just throwing his FB down. Has some fade and arm-side run. Best utilized down and away from lefties. Has average potential. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Keeps his pitches consistently around the zone. Violent arm action makes it difficult to hit his spots with his fastball. Misses up and outside. Locates better when he takes something off of it. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: White has generated a high strikeout rate at every stop in his career despite mostly average stuff. He has close-to-average control and does a pretty good job at minimizing contact, but he's going to have to prove it at every level. There's middle-relief potential here, but he'll likely need a jump in velocity to exceed that projection, and I've got him as an up/down type until he proves otherwise.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1

RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Shorter size, but filled out frame from top-to-bottom. Longer limbs and legs with a sound upper half. Packed on a good amount of muscle. Haven't seen much development this season due to injury.

Mechanics: High three-quarter delivery from the right side with a medium arm circle. Bit of a whip to his release. Creates average extension in his lower half, more focus on the arm and upper half. Lacks much extension and follow through; very little over-the-top motion. Still throws from a repeatable motion, but needs a bit more use in his lower half.

Fastball: Sits 91-93; tops 96 with some life towards the top of a zone. Some solid armside run; Has a feel for heat and spin. Solid offering as a whole. Throws it well up and away or down and low for whiffs. Above-average pitch at the next level. Grade: 55

Slider: Low-to-mid-80s slider that shows solid bite and horizontal break. Some late spin and movement to force soft contact. Zips out of the zone with a little tunnel to the fastball. Solid off-speed pitch that he throws consistently. Grade: 50

Changeup: Still looks to be a work in progress as a viable third pitch. Good velo take off the fastball at 82-84; but lacks much shape and fade. Sits a bit flat in the zone and gets barreled. Needs more development, reliant on the FB/SL combo. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Pounds the zone with the fastball, but doesn't show the best feel for his off-speed. Has strikeout stuff, forces S&M. Eats up too much of the zone and walks a fair share. Injuries and two-way play may have halted his ability to consistently find a feel for his arsenal. Needs to improve as a whole, has the raw stuff to play. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: It is still up in the air where Dodson ends up given his two-way play as an outfielder and relief pitcher. I believe he has a much brighter future on the mound, hence the pitching grades. His fastball-slider combo forces some ugly swings with solid velocity and spin. His changeup still needs to develop to be seen as a reliable third pitch. But most importantly, Dodson needs to stay healthy and find a better feel for the zone to become a decent arm out of the bullpen.

Physical Description: Solid size and physical stature. Broader shoulders and a sound lower half. Considerable size added to his frame over the years.

Hit: Balanced swing from the left side; slightly bent knees shoulder width apart with elbows pointing outwards. Minimal hip rotation and pre-load movement, mostly hands and upper body control. Average bat speed to his pull-side on most occasions. Rockets a few heaters up the middle. Shows glimpses of quick hands for solid contact, lacks consistent output. Stays patient in the box, will draw a walk and rarely strikes out. Grade: 45

Power: Below-average pop that doesn't translate well in games. Flashes fringe-average raw pop, but struggles to turn on pitches for power. Sprays a few mistakes to the gaps in right-center. Lacks consistent over-the-fence power. Grade: 40

Field: Versatile defender capable of playing 2B, 1B and 3B on occasion. Doesn't excel at one position, but average movements makes him a fit at second or third base. Playing more on the hot corner this year. Shows solid instincts, stays on his toes for the play. Turns double plays with soft hands. Swift movements and lateral quickness. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength capable of making routine throws. Solid accuracy, but lack of zip and carry limits where he plays on the dirt at times. Still makes the right play, doesn't get too wild. Solid defender with a sound arm. Grade: 50

Run: Fringe-average speed as he adds more size. Gets out of the box a little slow; takes a while to reach top-end speed. Lacks base stealing threat, but a smart runner. Shows some solid quickness and burst. Hustles on a lot of plays. Grade: 45

Overall: Gray's defensive versatility has been on full display this year, and he has the tools to be an average defender at a couple spots. He still struggles to meet the barrel consistently without much pop and hard contact. He is a patient hitter who can rip a few balls back up the middle. If the bat improves, that will go a long way. But he's more of a finished product at this point.
