Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Bigger than his listed weight. Tall and broad. Big shoulders. Strong thighs. Filled out.

Hit: Mirror-image stance with more pre-pitch bat movement from the right side. Stands open and slightly crouched. Keeps his knees tight. Moderate leg kick as he steps into the ball. Wide base at impact. Inconsistent bat path, but often upward. Looks more comfortable from the left side. Plus bat speed that drives balls to the outfield when he makes good contact. Most contact is to the pull-side. Flashes some understanding of the strike zone, but is overly aggressive at the plate and tries to kill the ball too often. Shows a demonstrable tendency to get under the ball, which has led to a significant amount of flyouts. Struggles with off-speed stuff down, which is unsurprising given his height. Strikeouts will be a significant part of his game; has so far struck out at a 46% clip across two minor league seasons. Possesses the underlying ability to see growth with the tool, but he needs to tone down his approach and let his pitch come to him. Grade: 30

Power: Plus-plus raw power from both sides; puts on shows during BP. Already uses his hips well and has plus bat speed. Power shows up in-game, but at the expense of his hit tool. Grade: 60

Field: Gets low on rollers and shows enough range to get under routine fly balls. May lose a step if he adds additional bulk, which could relegate him to LF or 1B. Moves well enough to fit in either position, but his sheer size may work best at 1B. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 55

Run: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 40

Overall: Garcia's huge raw power is his calling card, but his approach and aggressiveness at the plate will hinder his ability to get to it at higher levels. He offers intriguing upside, but there's a very real possibility he'll never get out of the low minors. He's played a total of six games in the last two seasons and simply needs reps. He'll be Rule V eligible in 2021.

Age: 17 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 IFA
RuleV: 2025

Overall: The Yankees top international signing in the 2020 class is Hans Montero, a shortstop out of the Dominican Republic. Montero isn't a physical specimen, and lacks the physical projection you'd typically associate with these teenage prospects but does come with a strong baseball acumen and good hands. He's an above-average runner with a strong arm, he fits best up the middle and on the dirt. Montero's offensive skills lag behind the defense right now but it's a line-to-line offensive profile with gap power.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Breaux is a muscle bound masher. Big forearms, strong back and shoulders. Was a former two-way player in college and has battled bouts of elbow soreness since getting drafted.

Hit: Starts with feet wider than shoulders, stance slightly closed. Holds hands in the middle of his body with gentle swaying to keep them loose. Modest leg kick and stride. As he lifts his front foot the hands cock and everything explodes towards the pitch. Stance opens up as he strides and he's able to keep hands inside the baseball. He's widened his feet and closed off since college. Hammers fastballs on the inner portion of the plate. He's one of the more aggressive hitters in professional baseball and has an ugly approach with more strikeouts and fewer walks than you would prefer. The swing has considerable length and a 27% K rate in short season A-ball is concerning. The optimistic side of me says a below average hit tool is the best future outcome here, but he's got some work to do to get there. Grade: 30

Power: Big power and exit velos are the name of the game for Breaux, and he's capable of swatting 25-30 homers as a full-time backstop if you ignore the other issues. He will need to improve his plate skills and contact rate to fully maximize his strength. Generates easy loft. Only 44% ground ball rate in last run. Plus power projection, maybe even a tick more than that for raw power but slim chance it optimizes due to a swing-heavy approach. Elbow injury likely takes away some thump here as well. Plus bat speed. Grade: 60

Field: Spent more time as a DH than a catcher due to arm injury. He's quite stiff and doesn't move well. Provides a sold target, but transfer and footwork issues drag down profile and put future behind the plate in question. Ultimately without a huge improvement behind the closed doors that were the 2020 offseason I think he's ticketed for first base/designted hitter and his approach issues can prevent that. Grade: 30

Arm: Has touched 100 on the mound, and would sit 95-98. Raw arm strength is plus but elbow injury and generally poor footwork takes away from throws. Spent more time as the DH rather than catcher due to arm injury. Needs reps. Weak 16% caught stealing rate to his career so far, plus arm held down by other defensive issues. Grade: 55

Run: Not quite bottom of the scale, but close. Giving him the benefit of the doubt as he moves decently while underway. Either way, not a tool to focus on with this profile. Grade: 30

Overall: I have my concerns about Breaux turning into a big league regular behind the plate, and his issues offensively will crush the profile and take him out at the knees before he's able to get off the ground. The power and arm strength are plus, but the supporting tools actively attack his strengths. He needs to develop some patience at the plate, and if he can do that while shortening his swing he can stick as a platoon option at first or designated hitter.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 191 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Athletic player with quick twitch and wiry strength. Room for 15-20 pounds of physical projection with the type of long slender build that should hold good weight. Not overly physical at only average height, but a build of lean muscle that can develop into adult strength in the coming years. Should require minimal maintenance, Pereira's training focus should instead be on adding overall physical strength. Dealt with an ankle injury that ended Pereira's season after 19 games in the New York Penn League.

Hit: Whippy bat speed with mechanical flaws that draw away from the overall profile. Starts from square stance with front hip hinting slightly open. Employs a high leg lift trigger, getting deep into his back hip in an exaggerated load. Bat wrap that saps away from overall bat speed, and flattens barrel head through zone. This gives Pereira an inability to adjust in different pitch heights and in turn non-fastballs. Does show raw overall skills conducive for average hitting but his unrefined approach and results left an impression during our 2019 observations. Grade: 40

Power: Looks to drive the ball in the air but doesn't get great angle on contact leading to lots of pop-ups and rollovers. Plus bat speed and the strength to get to average power if he can get his swing mechanics and contact consistency ironed out. Thus far his power has played below average in game. There's room for growth but it will take swing consistency. Grade: 40

Field: Above average fielder that takes mostly good routes and angles on flyballs. Shows the closing speed and twitch to stick in center for the foreseeable future but has the arm and skills to man any spot in the outfield. Doesn't have the elite running skills to be plus at the centerfield position but an above average outfielder capable of making the necessary plays. Grade: 55

Arm: Average outfield throwing arm the fits across the outfield. Good carry and accuracy, not an overly loud tool but an arm capable of making all necessary throws. Grade: 55

Run: Above average straight line runner with the ability to use his speed in a variety of ways. Strong base runner, with the ability to take the extra base, average base stealer with some upside to see double digit steals in some seasons, and good makeup speed in the outfield. Grade: 55

Overall: Good overall athlete with skills to dream on but a lack of formative skills. Above average or better supporting skills but a bat that brings his future role very much into question. Needs to improve in all areas of his offensive game and turn tools to skills. Has more name value than the profile deserves, but an upside player with a foundation of at least an up/down profile.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Wyatt Kleinberg

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 145 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Cabrera has a very slender frame. While there may have been hope that he could add on some muscle mass as he was brought up through the system, not much has been put on. He has solid fast twitch muscles, which allow him to react well both in the field and at the plate (contributing to his solid hands and plus defensive upside).

Hit: Cabrera has a very simple, quick to the ball approach at the plate. A switch hitter, he showcases plus potential from both sides, with consistent quality barrel control, and good hands. Grade: 55

Power: Cabrera's swing and body are both aren't geared for power. The quick swing from both sides of the plate is designed to produce in the hit category, sacrificing potential power generation in his load in order to get to the ball and make consistent, quality contact. He does run into the ball occasionally, but for the most part, he does not look like a candidate to hit more than ten home runs at any point. Grade: 30

Field: Cabrera's ranginess and plus quick twitch ability makes him a solid overall defender. He is very smooth with his glove, and does a very good job of setting his body going into throws Grade: 50

Arm: Cabrera possesses a plus arm at third base. He is capable of making difficult throws, though his arm may garner a better overall grade if he moved to the other side of the infield. Grade: 50

Run: While Cabrera has very good fast twitch muscles (which could aid in acceleration), he lacks any sort of elite speed -- he is rather average to slightly plus in that department. While this limits his range in the field, the offensive drawback is probably greater. A hit for average first guy will always benefit from having speed to bolster his game. The average profile may limit his overall package in the long run Grade: 50

Overall: With a plus hit tool from both sides of the plate, and a solid defensive profile, Cabrera has a pretty good overall package as a player. The issues that are holding him back however are the position he plays, and the lack of elite speed and or power. While his lack of musculature is by no means a turn off (plenty of players have excelled without muscle mass or power), the fact that he doesn't add another dimension on the bases holds him back from being a higher ceiling prospect. A shift to second base could help him defensively, while giving him more of a consistent spot in a lineup league wide. Progressive clubs that don't stick to the cookie cutter "guys of x build/skillset play here" may find a role for him at third. He has .285-.295 potential if he maximizes his skills at the plate.

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall and high waisted with long legs and arms. Sloping shoulders. Large presence on the mound that seems to go beyond his 6-foot-3 frame. Has grown into frame since signing from Venezuela in 2016. Upper body still has room for growth but frame is a bit on the slender side so he won't be undergoing a radical transformation. Close to physical maturity. No significant injury history.

Mechanics: Splits the rubber. Long arm action from a traditional three quarters arm slot. Whippy arm action, repeatable but inconsistent release point sometimes telegraphs breaking pitches. Traditional windup features a big leg lift that he uses to swing back slightly and drive forward. Breaks his hands a little early than ideal because he's not fully driving toward home yet. Short strider at foot plant, swings his body around on a good leg block. More tall and fall.

Fastball: 94-96 mph, experienced a velocity bump in 2019. Jumps out of his hand thanks to long arms. Able to elevate when needed and is effective in the upper quadrant, but has a penchant for working more east-west. Likes to keep it away from RHH. Sinking action when low in the zone, tough to barrel up and induces plenty of weak contact. Easily his best pitch and something he's been able to get by with at the lower levels. Grade: 60

Curveball: 79-81 mph. 11-5 break with bite at the end. Noticed a tendency to release it slightly higher than curveball and hitters were geared for it. Deploys it vs. RHH but despite break can leave it hanging. Flashes above-average at its best. Grade: 50

Changeup: 85-86 mph. Has some fade but generally lacks enough movement to make it a true strikeout offering. Maintains arm speed with it, deploys it to both-handed hitters. Lacking the command to place it where he wants. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Gomez knows how to keep the pitches on the fringes of the strike zone, enough to entice hitters to swing, especially at his heater. But he has a tendency to miss glove side quite often with all his offerings and often resorts to the fastball to put away hitters. Hasn't shown ability to attack all four quadrants yet. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Sturdy, physically-advanced frame with room to fill out in the upper-half; tapered shoulders, strong arms that could carry more muscle with maturity. Lower-half nearly maxed; thick, muscular thighs and calves. Shows athleticism and want on the field. Injury history includes a tricep injury in 2019. Frame reminds me of current MLB catcher Robinson Chirinos.

Hit: A once-compact base is recently more wide and comfortable; open stance with the feet outside of shoulder-width; weight favors the backside with a toe-tap timing mechanism. Hands sit high near the ear with a raised back elbow before dropping to the letters into load. Changes leg kick from high and pronounced down to a stride at times. Plus bat speed generated from direct bat path and engaged, strong legs. Passive over patient approach in brief stateside stint. Still raw; big gap in projection. Overall, a below-average hit tool padded by power. Grade: 45

Power: Impressive raw power; plus bat speed and strength yield regular home runs to the pull field in BP; warning track power to the opposite field currently. Makes a conscious effort to drive the ball in games; body and swing should help the power translate in-game but the approach may ultimately hinder home run totals long-term. Grade: 50

Field: Likes to vary the set-up; crouched to upright to on a single knee. Average defender behind the plate; makes expected plays. Feet can be slow on pitches out of the zone at times; average blocking ability; suppresses balls in the dirt well; framing needs improvement. Grade: 50

Arm: Double-plus arm strength; pop times in the 1.92-2.02 range with effortless carry and a quick release. Anticipates runners well; always ready to make a throw; unafraid to back-pick runners sleeping. Accuracy less than desirable at times; bounces throws to second base or throws offline. Overall, a plus tool considering accuracy with double-plus potential long-term. Grade: 60

Run: A well-below average runner; not a base-clogger, but laboring strides and conservative approach on the basepaths will hinder overall potential in the future as the body continues to mature. Knows his limits on the bases; not likely to beat himself. Grade: 30

Overall: Extreme risk with the profile; not only is Gomez still young with just 15 games under his belt stateside but his average defense and marginal hit tool bring risk to even a backup role at the big league level. Gains with the hit tool could propel his ceiling to an everyday profile, but a reserve role is more likely.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 19 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 148 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium frame. Lean, wiry athletic build with below-average strength. Shoulders that slope; skinny torso; lean lower half. Bearish on remaining physical projection. High priority J2 signee in 2018; $2.5M (Cuba).

Hit: Switch hitter; noticeably more effective from the left side. Open stance; hands at the letters; body upright with feet barely shoulder width apart. Quiet pre-load; large leg lift on gather; above-average bat speed; short and quick to the contact point. Advanced feel; solid bat-to-ball skills; shows patience, grinding out ABs waiting for his pitch. More slap and dash than I anticipated; well barreled shots yield rather weak contact. Enough bat speed to handle premium velocity; occasionally exposed by chase on the outer third and up in the zone. Often exposed by even average or better off-speed and breaking balls. Deficiencies could shore up a tick with further pro instruction. A well below-average tool presently, Vargas features many of the core ingredients of an above-average or better hitter. His limited physical projection and current inability to drive the ball or handle advanced secondaries have me bearish on the hit tool's projection. Grade: 40

Power: Lacks the necessary size and strength to adequately drive the ball with authority. Inconsistent bat path hinders his ability to regularly lift the ball against quality stuff. Will occasionally sellout for power attempting to lift and drive with less than stellar results; at his best when he plays within his game. BP predominantly utilized to spray line drives around the field. Power isn't bottom-of-the-scale at the big league level, but it's fairly close given his build and limited physical projection. Future power will predominantly be of the XBH variety; a result of finding gaps and utilizing his instincts and speed. Grade: 30

Field: Potential impact tool. Plus defender with advanced feel; great instincts; the game rarely speeds up on him. Enough skill and feel to adequately play anywhere on the infield dirt; enough arm to stick at SS. Shows the smarts to cut down lead runners when the opportunity is presented. Quick feet; soft hands; quick transfers and turns. Ranges well to both sides; reads hops well regardless of their difficulty. A sure-handed defender that's automatic with routine plays, and able to execute the occasional highlight reel play. Grade: 60

Arm: Easy plus raw arm strength with a quick release. Strong accurate throws with low carry, delivered on a line with impressive velocity. More than enough arm to stick on the left side of the diamond; can make the required throws from deep in the hole. Likes to show it off at times, uncorking the occasional laser or showboating with flair. Overall grade plays down a tick at times because of occasional youthful mistakes / accuracy issues; those rare occurrences are likely to shore up and polish with further pro instruction. Grade: 60

Run: Occasional plus straight line speed; mostly above-average clocks home-to-1B and he should settle there long term. Quick first step with an impactful second gear. Awareness and competitive nature yields strong turns and aggressive base-running, earning the occasional extra hustle base. Smart base-runner who picks his spots and reads pitchers well. Quick twitch athleticism and speed aid him well on defense. Grade: 55

Overall: Impact defense and speed help carry the profile, yielding some second-division regualr role 40 upside. Lack of power in an era where shortstops are expected to absolutely rake, blemishes the profile, padding on extra risk. Overall, there's tremendous pressure on the hit tool, which is ultimately the decisive factor in whether Vargas carves out a regular role or simply washes out in the minors.

RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium build with average strength throughout; squared shoulders, beefy forearms, high waist, stocky legs near physical projection. Torso may continue to fill out as he reaches maturity. Shows athleticism on the field; moves well considering the position. Can switch throw. Injury history includes a hamstring strain, quad issues, a concussion, and fracture of the patella.

Hit: Open stance; slight crouch to form a wide base. Fluid hands rest on the shoulder before perking into load. Hands are nearly as far back as possible at load; back elbow up, front elbow nearly locks. Rolls front foot over upon high finish. Appears more comfortable from the right side. Stiff lower half. Above-average bat speed generated from quick hands; swings lack lower-half engagement which hinders the quality of contact; shows a feel for the zone and displays discipline at the plate. Overall a well-below average hit tool padded by his ability to take free passes. Grade: 40

Power: Inconsistent raw power most apparent to the pull field when hitting from the right side. Patient approach may also hinder his ability to drive the ball early in counts. Mechanics issues with the lower half compound deficiencies, but remaining physical projection and continued pro reps should allow the power to play at below average levels long-term, scraping double-digit home run totals across a full season. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average receiver behind the dish; athletic movements with solid glove skills; quick glove transfers with adequate blocking abilities. Twitchy feet and can steal strikes with framing. Grade: 55

Arm: Pop times in the 1.95-2.10 range with a strong arm; inconsistent accuracy that can be fixed with continued pro instruction. Textbook throwing mechanics for a catcher straight from behind the ear. Throws from the knees are inconsistent. Despite double-plus pop times, the arm plays more plus with accuracy concerns. Grade: 60

Run: Below average runner; 4.38 home to first; faster and more athletic than the average catcher running the bases. Quick twitch movements should allow him to take the occasional extra-base and get back against strong pickoff moves, but will not be a base-stealing threat. Grade: 40

Overall: Seigler's display of athleticism and raw physical tools are his calling cards as a prospect. Although there is still projection remaining with his hit tool, it is difficult trying to justify a path to a first division regular role for him long-term. With his strong arm and defensive abilities, he could play as a possible everyday player on a struggling team or a platoon guy that could be leveraged with match-ups. Most likely, it is a reserve role at the highest levels.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 176 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: 2020

Physical Description: Smaller body compared to other players in this system, but has plenty of projection remaining. Nimble player with good athleticism and instincts. Becoming one of the better infield bats in the Yankees system.

Hit: Hands begin just below the ears and the operation is triggered by a subtle leg kick. Slight crouch in his stance with bent knees. Stance is closed. Peraza's game is contact-oriented, with great bat-to-ball skills and has great control of the strike zone. Most of his batted balls are line drives, as well. Swing is relatively smooth and he uses all fields, primarily using the pull side. Has all the makings of a future plus hitter from the right side of the plate. Grade: 60

Power: Despite his small frame, Peraza has tapped more into his power. He's started to produce some of the top exit velocities in the organization this year, with a maximum of 110 MPH and an average of 87 MPH. If he continues to impress with his contact rate, he's likely to develop more into fringe-average power, hitting closer to 15 home runs a year once in the big leagues. This, of course, will be dependent on if Peraza can start adding more loft to his swing. Grade: 45

Field: Peraza is a plus defender at shortstop with very good instincts and smooth actions at this position. He's got very good awareness on plays and has the arm to make it all happen. He's cleaned up on errors as he's progressed through the Yankees' system. Likely to stick at shortstop long term. Grade: 60

Arm: Peraza's arm is certainly strong enough to make plays happen. He's accurate enough to get it done, though there's work to be done. It's above-average for now, though an upgrade to plus isn't out of the question. Grade: 55

Run: Peraza is an aggressive base runner who uses his speed to his advantage. Throughout his career, he's stolen 44 bases across 159 minor league games. He's likely going to pan out as a plus runner. Grade: 60

Overall: Peraza fits the mold of an up the middle defender with an impressive bat. His line drive-oriented swing will help his hit for average more as he develops and he will grow more into his power. He'll be a menace on the base paths, as well. He's got plenty of time to develop further, as he's only 20 at the present time and is a couple of years away from the big leagues.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Compact, athletic build with good weight distribution and some projection remaining. Has come into more and more strength, body still projects some moving forward.

Hit: Volpe's hit tool was one of the best of the 2019 prep class and it projects to be an above-average tool for him. The swing is simple, compact, and direct with above-average bat speed that portends some power projection. He's always been able to control the zone and in spite of elevated K numbers in rookie ball, he still walked quite a bit. The ingredients of a plus hit tool are here. Grade: 60

Power: Volpe is certainly a hit-over-power profile, but there's some present pop to his game right now and the projection for more is there given his frame and bat speed. He's more of a line drive, gap-to-gap approach at the plate but can turn on fastballs over the plate and can drive mistakes out to the pull-side. His consistent contact quality will lead to plenty of extra base hits and the projection for 15-18 HR annually is there. Grade: 50

Field: The instincts come into play here as well, as Volpe was lauded as the most steady, consistent infield defender in the '19 prep class, though he lacks explosive athleticism. His range, hands, feet, and feel for the position all grade above-average and he's got a higher degree of polish as a defender than most prep drafts do. Good chance to play short long term, backup plan of 2nd base. Grade: 55

Arm: Neither a plus nor minus here, Volpe has solid-average raw arm strength that plays well due to the quickness of his release and the consistency of his mechanics and subsequent accuracy. Can make all the throws required to play shortstop, though arm will never be a weapon. Grade: 50

Run: Volpe can turn in an above-average time down the line but is mostly a solid-average runner who maximizes his speed with an extremely instinctual baserunning game. His instincts should allow him to steal some bases, but it's not a burner profile. Grade: 50

Overall: Hit tool-driven profile with shortstop projection, Volpe lacks a super high ceiling but has a high one as well as more of a floor than typical prep drafts. Still risky as are all HS hitters, but the upside of first division starting shortstop exists here.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, muscular, and well proportioned. Nearly at physical max, will likely require some maintenance over time but minimal overall. High level of athleticism for a catcher with the ability to play an outfield corner.

Hit: Above-average hit tool with a track record of high batting averages, high on base percentages and strong quality of contact. He showed some swing and miss during his stint with Yarmouth-Dennis on the Cape, but still slashed .308/.389/.526 over 180 plate appearances. Discerning eye, that looks to swing on pitches he can drive. This selectivity leads to high walk rates and contact on the right pitches. Sets up square to the pitcher with slight knee bend, hands set by head. At load hands drop and pull back, with moderate leg lift, followed by slight rock before trigger. Shows the ability to stay inside and not get overly long. Bat path creates natural lift due to strong vertical and horizontal bat angles at contact. Above average tool with the characteristics to blossom into plus at peak. Grade: 55

Power: Plus bat speed, optimal bat angle at the point of contact and raw strength that allows him to make quality contact over selling out for pull-side power. Does show the ability to drive balls to all fields but his hardest hit balls come when he turns on pitches on the inner-half. Power played throughout his tenure in the Cape Cod League; a notoriously difficult place to hit for power with consistency. The combination of strength, twitch, and optimal mechanics give Wells above average game power with plus upside at peak Grade: 55

Field: A versatile defender that played a variety of positions (catcher, outfield, and first base) competently. Has made strides with his receiving over the last year but is still a below average defender behind the plate. Has the ability to play an outfield corner and his speed is stronger than an average catcher so it's not out of the question that his long term role lies in the grass. Below average arm likely limits him from right. Grade: 40

Arm: Below average arm with limited carry and strength. Limits him to first base and left field long term. Likely to push Wells off of catcher if his arm does not improve. Grade: 40

Run: On the higher end of running catchers. Not a base clogger but a fringe average straight line runner. Showed smart base running instincts throughout his time as an amateur. Not a prolific base stealer but will keep you honest when he's on. Grade: 45

Overall: Bat first profile with a strong combination of above average tools in his hit and power. The questions around his defensive role lead to extra pressure on the bat to perform. That said, Wells possesses enough skills defensively to be an everyday player; it's just likely at first base or left field. One of the more polished College players in the draft with a track record of performance against the nation's best competition.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, strong muscular frame, looks like a grown man at 21. Strong lower half, broad shoulders, long arms and legs. The type of body that will likely require maintenance as he ages. Underwent Tommy John Surgery May 2019, has been back throwing since last spring and will likely be a full go for camp in 2021.

Mechanics: Classic overhead delivery, moderate leg lift mechanism, hand break at waist before drive, classic three quarters arm action, slight fall off at release. Elite arm speed. Repeats well from full windup, but struggles to stay on time from the stretch, which will lead to arm lag and trouble throwing strikes.

Fastball: Hard fastball that Sauer can rise, run and cut. Sits 93-95 mph with average vertical break and spin (2300 rpm), low release height and whippy arm play up deception. Conversely his three quarters action cuts his fastball, leading to less vertical rise than you'd like with his release height. Controls the zone from the windup, but his fastball control and command backup from the stretch. It's fringe average control overall as he tends to work around the zone, locates East to West, and his misses tend to come when he works high. A promising pitch, but one that needs refinement. Grade: 50

Curveball: Another high velocity breaking ball sitting 83-85 mph on average. Higher spin and higher efficiency than slider, but still a slurvy offering with below average drop. Gets more vertical and less horizontal than slider. Similar plan of attack to slider and changeup when it comes to location, often attacking the outer part of the plate. Another pitch that grades average due to its plus velocity. Grade: 50

Slider: Plus slider velocity at an average of 88.2 mph. More of a slow cutter than a slider really, with some vertical lift. Swing and miss pitch, but still learning to locate it, particularly in on the hands of lefties. Inconsistent feel but some encouraging characteristics. Grade: 45

Changeup: Does a good job of killing rise on the changeup while generating above average run (15.5 hMov). He's still learning feel for the pitch but he's able to land it for strikes and it's his go to secondary versus lefties. Lacks separation from fastball with an average of 5-6 mph difference. Further development and feel are needed for the pitch to play a average as he'll struggle to pronate and the offspeed plays like a soft fastball. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Still learning feel for his arsenal, and it doesn't help that the last time we laid eyes in Sauer he was a 20 year old in full-season ball weeks away from Tommy John Surgery either. Neither his strike throwing or zone location are refined at this point. He struggles to repeat his motion from the stretch and due to this his command of his entire arsenal suffers. He's also easy to hit when locating his fastball in the bottom of the zone, but struggles to land strikes at the top. Despite these struggles he'll have flashes of brilliance where he lands all over the zone and generates swinging strikes on well landed pitches. It's the inconsistency that comes with inexperience that plagues Sauer more than deep rooted stroke throwing problems. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Sauer has great stuff, and with further refinement there's a legitimate rotation ceiling. What pitcher emerges this spring is a bit of a mystery. However, if Sauer shows the same high octane stuff with further refinement to his sequencing and pitchability we could be looking at a potential breakout. Sauer doesn't throw anything under 84 despite possessing two breaking balls no an offspeed. The alone can play in a variety of roles. I view Sauer as a raw ball of clay capable of being molded into something with real rotation potential.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Long, lanky build with good present strength as well as moderate remaining projection. Broadness to back and shoulders, can fill out torso even more. Good body.

Mechanics: Clean gather over backside with good hip hinge, rides slope and fires hips well, gets rotated and linear in direction downhill, linear plant, some length to arm stroke, will get offline with moderate hook, back elbow height stays tolerable, 3/4 slot with good angle, can leverage the ball while creating angle, small recoil with moderate effort, plus arm speed.

Fastball: Pitch worked in the 92-94 mph range his draft spring for the most part, touching 96-97 mph at times. Flashes of plus life to the arm side, pitch can miss bats with velocity/movement combo, but can also be used as a barrel-misser to induce weak contact. Showed ability to hold velocity in starter role and move the pitch around the strike zone, likely something like above-average starter projection that could tick up a half-full grade in short bursts. Grade: 55

Slider: Pitch that improved the most during his time at NWFL, struggled with getting under the pitch and killing the spin, flattening it out and leaving it very hittable. Consistency of tilt and overall action improved, has flashed above-average at times generally in 82-84 mph range, more vertical break will continue improving the pitch, think a solid-average future exists here. Grade: 50

Changeup: Best pitch, plays extremely well off of fastball, kills spin on pitch and tunnels it well, turns it over and creates plus tumbling action at times, generally thrown with 8-10 mph separation from fastball, has trust and conviction, can miss bats under swings consistently with the pitch, has some splitter action at times but is a changeup, plus pitch. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Way really improved on these once he moved to NWFL, showing the ability to throw strikes consistently and move the ball around in a starter role. There really isn't enough evidence of him throwing strikes in a starter role to use stats here, but in spring looks, scouts were optimistic that he'll definitely throw enough strikes to start, but were less sure on the command projection. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A somewhat-projectable righthander with 3 pitches that project average or better along with good size, a chance to start, and a still-upwards developmental trajectory. Was viewed higher on some boards than where the Yankees got him, think a backend starter or quality set up type bullpen future exists here.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0

Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round CBA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Stockier, physical build with good strength throughout, built well, limited if any projection remaining on frame.

Mechanics: Sikkema has a good bit of funk to his operation, including purposeful variation of his arm slot as well as an extremely crossfire stride. It's not what one would call a pretty delivery, but he's on time, creates a ton of deception, and is able to repeat well given the strength of his body.

Fastball: The fastball is where the variations in arm slot come into play the most, will work in 88-92 mph range with plus arm side life from lower 3/4 slot, will raise up to overhand slot at times and can work in more 92-95 mph range, does a nice job mixing and matching and keeping hitters off balance as a result, variations should play both in starting and bullpen role. Grade: 55

Slider: More of a slurvy look but comes with power and bite, generally in the 78-84 mph range with variations dependent on slot, can sweep it across the zone away from lefties as well as bury it under the hands of righties, pitch is plus at it's best but will get under it and leave it fat at times, should be successful as a bat-misser at the highest level. Grade: 55

Changeup: Third pitch but a solid one, generates good sink, trusts it and throws it with conviction, likely won't be a bat-missing pitch but can keep righthanded hitters off of his primary offerings, tunnels well off of fastball. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Sikkema pounded the zone in his first foray into pro ball with only 1 walk in 10.2 NYPL innings in 2019, and consistently threw strikes at Missouri across several roles. The delivery and funk keep the command from being pinpoint but it's at least average command with a good chance to start. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Sikkema has a chance to provide value in several roles, his upside is that of a backend starter and/or late innings reliever, though the floor here is that of a middle innings matchup guy in the big leagues thanks to his funk, stuff, and strikes. He was viewed as a bit of a reach at draft time at pick 38, but it's looking more and more like the Yankees got a good player here.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Long legs and high waist make Medina look taller than his listed 6-1. Similar build to the Mariners Justin Dunn. Room for positive projection and added strength. Long arms and slopped shoulders. Prototypical pitchers body.

Mechanics: Upright operation with loose and free arm, and at times, his lower half. His somewhat crossfire delivery from a high three quarters leads to strike throwing issues. Significant timing issues despite simplistic operation. An adjustment to his arm action was made mid-2019 that resulted in a strong second half.

Fastball: High octane offering at 95-97 mph on average, sitting 96.3 mph. Average spin rate at 2350 with average vertical movement. Cuts his fastball some giving the pitch some action and side spin but limiting how well it plays elevated. Will touch 99-100 mph in game, so it's more than just a workout number. Struggled to command the pitch through his first 14 starts in 2019 and found his fastball+curveball command seemingly overnight in mid-July. Plus potential that plays above average at the moment. Grade: 55

Curveball: 11-7 breaking ball with two plan movement and average drop. Medina's go to secondary, and at 80-83 mph it's a bat misser. Like all of his arsenal showed significant command improvement in the second half of 2019. Tunnels off fastball well, to create a strong one two combination with a 15-20 mph velocity separation. Grade: 55

Changeup: From start to start and inning to inning this pitch's quality can drastically fluctuate. Early in the season the pitch was effective in spurts often flattening out or missing the zone badly. As his mechanical changes began to take shape the pitch would flash plus a few times an outing and by and large was an effective secondary versus left handed batters. Despite the promising developments late in 2019, the pitch's inconsistency land it in fringe-average territory with an average ceiling of changes hold. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Frankly, Medina's control and command profile is maddening. It was an easy 30 early in the season where he struggled to consistently find the zone. As his mechanical changes took shape Medina's strike throwing entered into above-average territory as he walked just 15 batters across his final 45.2 innings. The late season Medina did a good job of controlling his fastball later in the season particularly in the upper quadrants. He showed the ability to land his curveball to the lower quadrants, and his changeup to his armside. Whether or not this holds is a very real question and gives us some trepidation around his grades here. Is the 50/45 control/command arm we saw in his final the real Medina or a blip in an otherwise frustrating professional career? Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Timing issues plague Medina's ultimate outcome despite a simplistic tall and fall operation. Over the first 14 starts of 2019 Medina struggled to find the zone, and when he did he was often hit hard. Over this period his operation was consistently out of sync. Around the all-star break an adjustment was made to Medina's arm action that dropped the side height over 2 inches. Through this change Medina was able to keep his arm more on time. In turn this allowed Medina to stay online with the plate while drastically improving his leg block. This in turn boosted his strike throwing tremendously. Over his first 58 innings Medina walked 55 batters. While over the final 45.2 he walked just 15. Not only did his control jump two grades over this period his stuff did too, as he added 4-5 inches of horizontal break onto his fastball in those final 8 starts. His pitch shapes were more tightly clustered too. Essentially the adjustment in Medina's slot set off a series of improvements across the board. Now the bad news - Medina's instructs data and reports look more like the first half of 2019 than the glorious end of season run. If he's able to replicate those improvements and sustain them long term then Medina will reach the lofty ceiling many have promoted over the years. However, with his pattern of inconsistency we view him as a fringe-average major leaguer with backend rotation upside. Elite stuff with pitchability concerns.

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA, MIN
RuleV: 2019

Physical Description: Slender frame with projection at 6'2", 185 pounds. High waisted pitcher with long levers. Strong lower body, upper body has more room for strength to be added. Had shoulder surgery with the Twins, whom he signed with in 2015, before joining the Yankees in the Jake Cave trade prior to the 2018 season.

Mechanics: Gil pitches from the third base side of the rubber, triggering the operation with a higher leg kick and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Arm action is a bit long, though the arm speed is very impressive. Gil gets elite extension, topping upwards of seven feet, though he shortens up his extension with his slider. Release points can use some refinement, as they can get a bit inconsistent.

Fastball: Gil has an upper-90's fastball that has been tinkered with throughout 2020. The Yankees worked on adding more riding action to the pitch and eliminating a two-seam variant of the pitch. With this, Gil has averaged 17 inches of vertical break at the alternate site, making the pitch much more potent at the top of the zone. The pitch does get good horizontal life, as well, getting near nine inches of run. Pitch has above-average spin, with spin rates consistently topping 2,400 RPM's. He's touched triple digits in the past and has held velocity throughout starts, as well. Easily a double-plus offering. Grade: 70

Slider: The slider is a newer offering in Gil's arsenal, replacing a high-spin curveball. The new pitch provides some promise, as it sits in the mid-80's with high-spin, coming close to 2,500 RPM's on average. The pitch gets less than half a foot of vertical break, with seven inches of sweep. With it being a new pitch, there is still quite a bit of development to go with the offering. He's got the feel for it, though it could be a tad bit firmer. More than likely to be an above-average offering, at best. Grade: 55

Changeup: Gil throws a hard change-up, averaging just over 90 MPH in 2020. The pitch certainly has good shape and action, with 15 inches of fade and nine inches of vertical break, though the pitch needs more consistency. The spin rates are rather high, topping 1,900 RPM's on average, as well. The Yankees have worked on making Gil tinker with his grip in order to find that consistency, though it has a ways to go. Fringe-average offering with a chance to be average. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Throughout his minor league career, Gil has struggled with throwing strikes, averaging 5.4 walks per nine innings. However, he's worked on finding the zone more consistently with the Yankees, though he's got a lot of work to do in order to get average control and command. Unless there's a drastic turn-around, Gil is only likely to have below-average control and command. Control: 40 | Command: 40

Overall: Gil has shown promising stuff as a starter, though his strike-throwing ability will be what ultimately decides if he stays in the rotation or becomes a bullpen arm. If he does become a bullpen arm, he can become a good late-inning reliever with electric stuff. If he can stay in the rotation, he'd be a back-end piece. Certainly a very fun arm to follow.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R

RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Large physically developed frame: broad shoulders with mild slope; long levers; average strength throughout upper body and core; high waist with a strong, sturdy lower half. Frame is likely at projection. Lengthy injury history includes Tommy John surgery in May of 2017 and additional IL stints for minor elbow inflammation.

Mechanics: Semi-windup; tall and fall. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and high effort in the delivery. Short compact arm action. Long stride with above-average extension. Solid deception from waist high leg kick and deep hand break. Frame and high arm slot generate steep downward plane. Choppy but fairly simple and well repeated mechanics on delivery.

Fastball: Sits 93-96. High slot generates a steep plane. Two-seam variant generates heavy sink and hard bore against same-sided batters. Four-seamer features solid arm-side run. Trusts the pitch; attacks all four quads; will attack with it in hitter's counts. Control over command; misses are predominantly glove side and up in the zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sits 83-86. Often misclassified as a slider because of its velocity, shape and high spin rate; utilizes a hybrid spike curve / knuckle curve grip. Shows advanced feel; manipulates arm action to occasionally mix in a softer variant with more traditional 11/5 break. Primarily shows firm two-plane break; more vertical tilt than sweeping action with exceptional bite. Commands the offering exceptionally well; will throw it inside on RHB to steal strikes and back foot it against LHB for chase. Legitimate put-away offering. Grade: 60

Changeup: Firm change of pace offering that sits 87-90. Has feel and thrown with conviction; lacks optimal velo separation and consistent execution. Occasionally slows arm speed telegraphing and guiding the pitch; should refine with further pro instruction. Lacks significant fade but features solid late vertical drop. Thrown almost exclusively to LHB; elicits weak contact and moderate swing and miss. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Control over command. Confident strike thrower; lives in or around the zone. Shows some pitchabilty; attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level and sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. Shallow arsenal that's prone to heavy FB / CB sequencing and may have issues turning over a big league lineup multiple times. Average control and below-average command yields additional reliever risk. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A bit of an anticipated slow burn, Schmidt finally debuted late last season with mixed results. The development of his change-up and command will ultimately determine if he reaches draft day's mid-rotation ceiling, or settles in as a solid backend SP. A less optimal, but solid fallback plan would be a move to the bullpen where his electric FB/CB combo likely yield an impact high-leverage relief arm.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 163 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Diminutive build, well below-average height and size at 5-foot-9 and under 170 pounds. Unlikely to add much more weight, size leads to some durability questions, but his track record of staying healthy and handling innings at a young age bode well

Delivery & Mechanics: Slight side step before, high leg lift that closes off front side. Hands drop by back hip at hand break before drive. High three quarters release from drop and drive delivery, using his height to his advantage generating a low height at the point of release playing up his fastball.

Fastball: Average fastball velocity at 91-93 mph with the ability to bump 95 mph. It's fringe average velocity, but it plays up due to a few factors. First his efficient spin axis creates above average vertical lift, averaging nearly 20% more lift than the average major league fastball. Second, and most importantly, Garcia's ability to land the pitch to all parts of the zone. Not many fastballs have truly plus command but Garcia's might. Increased velocity would allow the pitch to play up at the major league level, and at just 21 a few added ticks seems reasonable in the coming years, particularly with a strong mechanical operation. Grade: 55

Curveball: Efficent 12-6 breaking ball that has above average vertical dump. Garcia's best secondary pitch and a perfect compliment to his fastball. Above average raw spin at 2700 rpms due to a near six pm spin axis. Slow bender at mid-70s velocity but works well off of the changeup and slider - two pitches in the low to mid-80s. Looks to locate on the bottom of the zone and to the edges of the plate. Does a good job of controlling the pitch and landing it at the bottom quadrants, playing off of his high fastball plan of attack. Strong tunneling qualities. Grade: 55

Slider: Slurvy pitch with above average vertical drop for a slider. Average velocity in the low-80s, sitting 81-84 mph, with minimal horizontal break, but drop and late two plane tail. Generated the most swings and misses at the major league level. Nearly 8-9 mph increase in velocity over curveball makes it a better swing and miss pitch at present. Lacks the feel he displays with his fastball, curveball, or changeup, making the pitch a fringe-average offering. Grade: 45

Changeup: Higher usage pitch in the major leagues than his curveball. Shows average or better feel for the pitch with consistency. Pronation profile leads to a league average amount of run, with 14 inches of horizontal break. Consistently lands armside, does not do a great job of killing lift relative to most changeups. However his feel for locating plays the pitch up. Grade: 50

Control and Command: As is true of most pitchers, command can come and go depending upon the pitch. The same is true of Garcia. He was the rare case at the MLB level where his control actually played significantly better than it had in the minors. Deivi's ascent has been rapid, reaching the major leagues at 21. So some of this may be a culmination of age and experience honing feel and repeatability in his mechanics. Still will get too cute with his location on his changeup and fastball, and will lose feel for his breaking ball(s) at times. Overall above average control and average command with room for growth. Control: 55 | Command: 55

Overall: A unique pitcher with several factors working against him from a traditional sense (size and fastball velocity), but a true four pitch arsenal with a variety of looks and unique characteristics. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees place Garcia into a true starting role going five innings or so in their recent fashion. Control and command took a step up, now he must conquer the task of mastering pitching at the major league level. Albeit a small sample size, Garcia performed moderately well in 2020. Future mid-rotation starter upside with some innings limitations. Likely role is a backend starter.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 5-10

Hits/Throws: S/R

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Dominguez is built like a monster athlete. With broad shoulders, high muscle mass, and powerful legs, he is everything you could possibly want out of a guy of his frame. It is worth noting that the mobility of muscles will eventually go down as he ages, and the continual addition of muscle could slow him down over time, while adding raw power.

Hit: Dominguez is a switch hitter, which is already an asset to begin with. While the swing is geared towards generating power, Dominguez possesses near elite bat speed and strong hands. These two traits coupled with the fact that he gets his bat into the hitting zone early via a vertical bat orientation post load gives Dominguez an above-average ceiling in the hit department. Grade: 55

Power: Dominguez's swings on both sides of the plate are geared towards generating max power. The bat speed, along with the big load (leg kick), and larger stride give him more momentum moving forward. The plus separation plays elite due to the way in which he loads his hands -- they stay in line horizontally, without much vertical ride up towards the head (think Robinson Cano hand load with a more vertical bat orientation). These traits all suggest high power, and after taking one glance at Dominguez's extremely built frame, it is clear to see that he will be able to produce plus power numbers in the future. Grade: 60

Field: Dominguez's plus speed allows him to get around the outfield with ease, making plays that many cannot. He is an above-average center fielder, and could be optimized to play any of the three outfield positions. If he remains as muscle bound as his current state, he may shift to left later on in his career. Grade: 55

Arm: Dominguez showcases a strong arm from the outfield. The fact that he was tried out as a catcher by some is a massive justification for his pure arm strength. While it is not exactly double-plus, it plays plus and is a major asset for Dominguez defensively. Grade: 60

Run: Dominguez is a plus to double-plus runner. He showcases enough speed to probably be a candidate for 25-30 steals in a given season, though this is contingent upon his ability to stay flexible throughout his career. If he holds onto it, he could be a 30-30 candidate; if he adds excess muscle however, the steal numbers, and range in the outfield will likely diminish significantly. Grade: 60

Overall: Dominguez has five nearly plus tools, and with proper development could be a superstar candidate at the big league level. As an evaluator it is worth mentioning that his strength and conditioning program will be critical in the determination of the player he will become -- he is already extremely muscular, and the addition of further mass could be detrimental to his flexibility (arm whip, speed, etc). With more power (assuming proper pd), he could be a 40hr candidate, though he is probably best optimized as a five tool player.
