Aug 2021 Report
Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows
Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2018 CBB
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: Shorter size, but filled out frame from top-to-bottom. Longer limbs and legs with a sound upper half. Packed on a good amount of muscle. Haven't seen much development this season due to injury.
Mechanics: High three-quarter delivery from the right side with a medium arm circle. Bit of a whip to his release. Creates average extension in his lower half, more focus on the arm and upper half. Lacks much extension and follow through; very little over-the-top motion. Still throws from a repeatable motion, but needs a bit more use in his lower half.
Fastball: Sits 91-93; tops 96 with some life towards the top of a zone. Some solid armside run; Has a feel for heat and spin. Solid offering as a whole. Throws it well up and away or down and low for whiffs. Above-average pitch at the next level. Grade: 55
Slider: Low-to-mid-80s slider that shows solid bite and horizontal break. Some late spin and movement to force soft contact. Zips out of the zone with a little tunnel to the fastball. Solid off-speed pitch that he throws consistently. Grade: 50
Changeup: Still looks to be a work in progress as a viable third pitch. Good velo take off the fastball at 82-84; but lacks much shape and fade. Sits a bit flat in the zone and gets barreled. Needs more development, reliant on the FB/SL combo. Grade: 40
Control and Command: Pounds the zone with the fastball, but doesn't show the best feel for his off-speed. Has strikeout stuff, forces S&M. Eats up too much of the zone and walks a fair share. Injuries and two-way play may have halted his ability to consistently find a feel for his arsenal. Needs to improve as a whole, has the raw stuff to play. Control: 40 | Command: 30
Overall: It is still up in the air where Dodson ends up given his two-way play as an outfielder and relief pitcher. I believe he has a much brighter future on the mound, hence the pitching grades. His fastball-slider combo forces some ugly swings with solid velocity and spin. His changeup still needs to develop to be seen as a reliable third pitch. But most importantly, Dodson needs to stay healthy and find a better feel for the zone to become a decent arm out of the bullpen.
