Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 1
RuleV: Eligible
Physical Description: A fairly average frame that lacks definition throughout. Shoulders slightly tapered, lanky limbs, trim waist, and long legs. Twitchy athlete on the field. Injury history includes a torn right labrum in 2018 and multiple facial fractures from hit-by-pitch in 2020. Overall frame reminiscent of former MLB outfielder DeWayne Wise.
Hit: Squared stance; deep crouch to form a wide base; hands at the letters through load. Short stride with virtually no leg kick. Above-average bat speed generated from compact stroke and quick hands; tends to get long against fringe or better off speed on the outer third. At his best, he sprays line drives all over the field and favors contact to power; leveraging his legs to steal hits or take the extra base. Unafraid to work counts, generating fair share of walks and strikeouts. Swing-and-miss comes mostly in the upper quadrant and outer third. Shows ability to lay off spin down. Overall, a fringy tool with little projection remaining. Grade: 45
Power: Shows above-average raw but more fringe-average in-game; occasionally sells out at the expense of contact; approach refinement may hinder overall power numbers. Shows power to all fields but favors the pull field. Minimal projection remaining. Grade: 45
Field: Solid-average defender; slowly starting to play more left field as the frame reaches projection. Lacks the instincts necessary to play center every day but could fill in as needed. Steady overall with a Rajai Davis-like glove that profiles best in left, but could stand in center long-term. Grade: 50
Arm: An average arm; shows carry with throws staying on line. Arm would play in right field fine; shows enough strength to play any spot in the grass. Has taken a step back since shoulder surgery. Grade: 50
Run: Easy plus runner with potential for double-digit steals across a full season. Aggressive on the base paths almost to a fault; fearless mentality. Quick out of the box with strong, pronounced strides to get down the line. Not likely to regress from current ability. Grade: 60
Overall: Whitley remains a high-risk profile; his swing-and-miss and injury history continue to make an everyday role less likely as he progresses through the minors, but he'll continue to get every chance as a former first rounder and possible power/speed threat. His ceiling for me is a bench bat, but more likely an up/down emergency type long-term.
