Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Listed at 5'10, 170. On the smaller side for a big league pitcher, particularly a reliever. In good shape but not an overpowering mound presence.

Mechanics: Works exclusively from the stretch. Delivery has a lot of moving parts, with glove and front leg jumping forward toward the hitter. Short arm action makes it difficult to pick the ball up out of his hand. High 3/4 arm slot. Average athlete.

Fastball: 92-94 MPH fastball. Lacks life; doesn't get many chases above the belt and can get barreled up in strike zone. Grade: 50

Curveball: Breaking ball drives the profile. It's a plus low-80's curve with bite and power. 11-5 shape. Plays best when located down and glove-side and is particularly tough for right-handed hitters to pick up. Grade: 60

Control and Command: More consistent throwing the fastball in the zone than the breaking ball. Works north-south with the fastball but doesn't look as comfortable commanding it glove-side. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Gilliam profiles as an up-and-down reliever. I'd like to see him lean on the curveball a little more early in counts because the fastball, despite average velocity, is hittable in the strike zone. A breaking ball-first approach would likely lead to high walk rates but enable him to continue to miss bats at the big league level, as he's done with ease in the minors. Gilliam could be an option for the MLB bullpen next year.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Slender build on the mound. Lacks solid size and height, but uses his long arms and legs. Can add more weight to his frame, doesn't have eye-popping velocity.

Mechanics: Pitches from a high 3/4 slot, from the right side. Has a quick motion and high leg kick, gets good extension. No hiccups in delivery, clean mechanics throughout. Consistent delivery produces solid command.

Fastball: Low-to-mid 90s offering that lacks spin and movement. Fastball primarily sits 92-92, saw an uptick to 95-96 last season. Lacks swing-and-miss movement. Struggles with command at times, pitch gets barreled for extra bases. Average fastball offering. Grade: 50

Curveball: Low-to-mid 70s curveball that lacks consistency of a third pitch. Rarely thrown in his arsenal. Shows promising 12-6 break at times, lacks consistency and depth. Needs more reps and improvement. Grade: 30

Changeup: Low-80s changeup with great tunnel and depth. Changeup is a plus off-speed pitch with great depth and shape. Thrown low in the zone for plenty of whiffs. Dip in velocity from fastball creates good separation. Spots it well armside. Grades as plus pitch with great movement and shape. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Solid command makes up for lack of eye-popping stuff. Locates pitches well low and away. Has a great feel for his changeup, throws it with confidence in any count. Fastball hangs over the plate at times, needs improvement. Throws consistent strikes and forces soft contact. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Butto's changeup is arguably the best in the Mets' system, but the rest of his arsenal lacks eye-opening features. Despite an increase in velocity, His fastball remains inconsistent and needs improvement while his curveball is vastly behind as a third pitch. Butto's solid command gives him a safer floor as a reliever, but lacks the ceiling and stuff of a starter.

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-7
Weight: 197 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/S
Acquired: 2018 Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: A short second baseman (listed only an inch taller than Jose Altuve) with a stocky build. Thick legs, short torso. Compact build with little room for growth.

Hit: Crouches in the set up with a wide base, bat resting on shoulders with hands at neck level and remains motionless until pitcher windup. Uses a toe tap for timing. Has a level swing plane with average bat speed. Cortes relies extensively on upper body and, specifically, his hands, to produce all contact with his compact stroke. He's an aggressive hitter with above-average bat control, often spoiling borderline pitches. Has a tendency to expand at times. Often gets on top of the ball and pulls most of his batted balls but flashes the ability to wait on a breaking pitch and send it to the opposite field. Much better vs. RHP. Grade: 50

Power: Cortes doesn't engage his lower half so his game power is severely diminished. More of a line drive hitter that lacks lift in his swing. Occasionally his barrel control will let him turn on pitches to his pull side for some pop. Grade: 40

Field: Below average second baseman who'll make his fair share of errors because of lackluster glove. Reliable for routine plays but won't make the five-star plays. Also a little bit of an oddity as he is ambidextrous and plays the infield throwing righty and on the rare occasion he's in the outfield he throws lefty. Grade: 40

Arm: Arm suitable only for second base. Lacks ideal carry on his throws, liability when he's used in left field. Grade: 45

Run: Choppy runner, slow out of the box, below average runner underway. Poor instincts on the base paths. Grade: 45

Overall: Cortes is a bat first second baseman who battles at the plate but lacks a plus hit tool or plus power tool to help carry the profile. He'll need to either drastically work to improve the fielding or the hit tool to carve out staying power at the highest level.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 8
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, physical frame. Lower half more developed than upper; thick neck, sloping shoulders. Modest projection remaining in torso; high waist, long, strong thighs and legs at maturity. Build reminds me of Joe Crede.

Hit: Simple set-up; square stance, quiet hands sit near the ear. Feet outside of shoulder-width; upright stance has recently changed to a deep crouch to form a wide base. Pronounced leg kick; lands near original pre-load spot in the box with a heavy hip turn. Above-average bat speed generated from strong lower-half engagement and quick hands. Fairly compact stroke; up-the-middle approach; waits on a pitch to drive. Feasts on pitches down and in. Patient approach but overswings at times, causing a sacrifice in strikeouts and inconsistent quality contact. Average strikeout and walk totals across his minor league career. Overall, a fringe-average hit tool near projection. Grade: 45

Power: Fringe-average power; above-average raw that translates in-game. Could likely post higher totals with some approach adjustments, but takes the Ryan Howard method to power, often using the biggest parts of the park. Lacks the strength necessary for consistent over-the-fence pop; double-digit home runs likely across a full season padded by extra-base drives to the gaps. Grade: 45

Field: Below-average fielder at first; has recently taken on more games there. Still raw at the position; struggles with positioning body correctly to receive throws. Struggles to squeeze throws at times. At catcher, a fringy defender. More finesse with movements. Makes routine plays, A quiet glove with average framing ability. Should be passable at first base, but far from a weapon at either position defensively. Grade: 40

Arm: Below-average arm; accuracy wavers due to lack of carry with throws. Throws remain on-line; misses often vertical, mostly low. Deficiencies may be mitigated at first, but will not be a strength if the profile at either spot. Grade: 40

Run: Below-average runner on the bases with home-to-first times in the 4.21-range. Long, lumbering strides down the line. Not a base-clogging liability, but not a base-stealing threat and not likely to take the extra base. Grade: 40

Overall: Mazeika's profile is risky; as a hit-first catcher, he lacks the necessary consistency offensively to justify an everyday role. At first base, his bat would play down considering the position-and he may struggle to get back up reps behind the plate as organizations typically opt for a more defense-first profile. The most likely outcome is an organizational up-and-down piece, which he has essentially achieved, with his ceiling being a journeyman backup catcher.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA (TOR)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Strong, well built. Slightly heavy through mid-section. Strong legs. Fair upper body muscular development. Athletic. Not body type to add much more weight or strength.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup. Slight drop and drive. 3/4 arm slot with short, quick arm action. Moderate effort delivery, uses athleticism well. Solid deception due to crossfire and arm action. Limited extension. Fluid and athletic motions that are repeated fairly well.

Fastball: Sit 93-96 mph, can touch 98 mph. Easy velocity, maintains throughout. Good riding life, ball jumps on hitters. Decent control, wavers at times. Below-average command, but flashes ability to throw to both sides of plate. Swing and misses ability due to velocity and deception. Grade: 60

Curveball: Sits 78-81 mph. Big, sweeping break. Bites when on top. Will get loopy, back up at times. Fringe-average control, below-average command. Leaves over the plate too often. Potential out pitch with more consistency. Grade: 45

Changeup: Sits 87-91 mph. Sinking action with some arm side run. Slows arm speed and delivery. Commands well, down in the zone frequently. Not afraid to throw early in count. Poor velocity separation. Needs further development but flashes potential. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Stays around zone, but misses spots frequently. Crossfire leads to lack of consistent command with all pitches. Leaves fastball and curveball over the plate too often, gets hit hard. Control wavers as he gets deeper in game. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Diaz's fastball is easily his best pitch. It sits in the mid-90's and can reach 98 at times. He generates easy velocity with an athletic motion and quick arm action. The ball jumps on hitters and produces whiffs. His curveball shows the ability to be an out pitch but lacks consistency. It'll back up on him when he doesn't get on top and will get hit hard. The changeup shows flashes but lacks velocity separation and deception. He shows the ability to control it but needs to improve arm speed consistency to get more swing and misses. Diaz is around the zone with all three offerings most of the time but needs to be better at commanding them. He leaves the ball over the plate too often and as the game goes on his control starts to waver. There is a lot to like about Diaz's fastball but his command and offspeed pitches are going to need to be more consistent if he wants to have an impact at the big league level. He'll likely be in a spot starter or long relief role down the line.

Evaluator: Russ Peters

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Compact, athletic build. Thick lower half. Has grown bigger and stronger with maturity and a pro regimen.

Hit: Sets up with back elbow up and hands in at neck level, wide base with legs set more than shoulder width apart. Weight shifts to back foot with noticeable leg kick during load, swing is smooth and fairly quiet. Despite the swing aesthetics Carpio lacks an advanced feel for hitting and how to most effectively handle different pitches in different locations. Battles at the plate and has shown an adept ability to draw a walk. Grade: 45

Power: Carpio has grown bigger and stronger over the years, allegedly adding 25 pounds of muscle. Also has geared his swing to generate more loft which briefly resulted in a flash of more pop. At this point that flash of power appears to be an aberration, until we see more consistent power output Luis is more of a singles and doubles hitter. Grade: 30

Field: Polished and smooth in the field. Very good lateral movement to get to balls on either side of his position with a quick first step. Looks very comfortable in the dirt. Sure handed with quick actions and seamless transitions. Enough glove to be an asset anywhere in the infield. Grade: 55

Arm: Arm plays best at 2B. Passable at SS. Lacks the zip and play making ability desired from SS or 3B Grade: 50

Run: Short, choppy steps. Ability to move laterally in the field outshines the ability to be an asset on the basepaths. Instincts and smarts to steal bases but will be challenged by advanced catchers. Grade: 50

Overall: Watching Carpio play leaves you wanting and hoping for just a little bit more. He looks the part of a big league regular, but it just hasn't translated into the batter's box. If Carpio can come around to hit with either more consistent average or pop he can attain this ceiling, but currently Luis projects as a utility infielder who can make plays in the field and get on base when his number is called.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 179 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/L
Acquired: 2019 Round 4
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Decently tall with a slender frame, with slumped shoulders. There is some room to fill out on the frame.

Hit: The Southeastern Conference's all time hit leader has a slight squat in his batting stance, he has a slight wiggle in his bat pre-pitch. He is short and direct to the ball with a linear bat path. He doesn't hit the ball hard, and is looking to spray balls in the gaps and use his speed to pick up extra-base hits. He makes consistent contact and negates any handedness advantage a pitcher may get by being a switch-hitter. There is little power behind his swing, and he does hit his fair share of balls on the ground, which he could do and get on base against college defenses but in pro ball he will have to reduce the amount of ground balls he hits to be successful. He did swing and miss more once he entered pro-ball seeing better quality of stuff, so that will be something worth keeping an eye on. He does draw his fair share of walks and has no discernable difference between his left-handed and right-handed swing as they both produce the same outcomes and the same levels of contact. Grade: 55

Power: Mangum has average bat-speed but he doesn't hit the ball hard because of his linear bat-path and below average raw strength. He isn't looking to lift the ball either, which will hurt the overall power output. It is hard ever seeing him exceed double-digit homers in a full season. Grade: 30

Field: Mangum could play any three of the outfield spots in a pinch, he profiles best in the centerfield where he has the range to get balls in the gaps. He makes good reads off the bat and takes quick and efficient routes to the ball. He is equally adept at moving from his left and to his right. He routinely hits the cut-off man instead of trying to make a long throw. While he has more than enough range to play right he doesn't have the arm to profile there. Grade: 50

Arm: Mangum's arm is slightly lacking, he has the arm to play center or left-field. His arm is accurate, but his throws are lacking in the velocity department. When there is a runner trying to make a move for an extra base he routinely hits the cut-off man because he doesn't have the arm to make a throw, especially when he has to throw to home. Grade: 45

Run: Mangum is a plus runner underway, he has a quick and short stride that he uses to get up to his top-speed quickly. He is a threat on the basepaths thanks to his good reads and quick jump as a base-stealer. He is aggressive in grabbing extra-bases off of hits and getting "hustle doubles." Grade: 60

Overall: Mangum is a high makeup baseball grinder who gets the most out of his tools. He makes a lot of contact, can play a premium defensive position and gets the most out of his tools. He doesn't have great quality of contact and will need to hit for more power if he hopes to carve out some sort of role as a consistent big leaguer.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 8
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Large, imposing frame at 6'7", 230 pounds. High waisted player with broad shoulders and long limbs. Body is filled out with minimal to zero projection remaining to frame. Lower half is strong. Brother of Cubs pitcher Trevor Megill.

Delivery & Mechanics: Turn and fire delivery from the first base side of the mound with operation triggered by high leg kick. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot and generates good extension. Operation is pretty effortless and arm action is good. With his large frame, mechanics could use some refinement to get into more consistency. Delivery does have a crossfire in it, which makes it tough for hitters to get comfortable against him, though it hampers fastball command.

Fastball: Megill has previously sat in the 92-94 MPH range with his fastball, touching 96 MPH on several occasions. Pitch is helped by high spin rates and the extension created by his delivery. Does get some arm-side run on the heater. Command of pitch can be hampered at times, especially to the arm-side. Could be some more in the tank velocity-wise, though it's already an above-average offering. Grade: 55

Slider: Megill's slider has seen much improvement since signing with the Mets in 2018. With Arizona, the pitch tended to get flat often. Now, it's an above-average offering in the 82-85 MPH range with a ton of spin and good shape. It can get flat at times still, but it's more consistent than it was with the Wildcats. Helps form a solid fastball/slider combination that would work well in a major league bullpen. Grade: 55

Changeup: Megill has a feel for the pitch, but it is far behind the fastball and slider in development. Likely won't be more than a below-average offering at the next level. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Megill's control and command have certainly improved as he has progressed, though he's got some more work to do if he wants to have average assets for both. This will limit his role to a bullpen arm in the future. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Megill is currently being developed as a starter, though it's very likely he becomes a bullpen arm at the next level. The fastball/slider combination would play well in a multi-inning role, though further development would help him earn a better role in the Mets bullpen.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 4
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Strong pitchers build. Well built in lower half, especially core area. Good overall wing span with arms and long legs. Tall, slender frame is more muscular now and at his age, only leaves room for little projection in his build

Delivery & Mechanics: Works from right side of the rubber and uses a chest high, big leg kick to create force. Leg kick forces strong hip hinges that looks like may creat balance issues trying to stay stacked as he makes his move towards the plate. Strong uses of drive leg off the rubber. Separates high above his leg as it comes down. Fast and loose arm speed, but a long arm swing out of his separation. Plant leg extends out over his front hip slightly. Starts his upward armswing too early before front foot strike. Shortening the arm swing, delaying the move upward and getting his strike foot down quicker may lead to a bump in velocity. Repeats delivery moderately well. Uses high 3/4 arm slot.

Fastball: 88-92 t94. Gets good downhill plane on the pitch thanks to high arm slot and wingspan. Inconsistent arm side run. Low spin (2100) rate. Average command of the pitch. Locates better low in the zone and more north-south. Plays up a little due to extension. Grade: 45

Curveball: 71-74. 12-6 and sometimes 11-5 shape. Late, sharp downward break. Doesn't have high spin but picks up ulgy swings and misses. Used more as a chase pitch than a pitch he can throw for a strike. Shows ability to consistently bury it low in the zone. Grade: 50

Slider: 78-80 t82. Shows good two-plane break and late tile. Leaves it up in the zone occasionally and will sometimes look like a cutter with inconsistent shape. Favors it as a third offering. Average command. Grade: 45

Changeup: 78-82 t84. Shows good run and fade. Inconsistent movement with it but flashes above average. Arm speed to sell it. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Has average fastball command and slider. Below average command with the changeup. Doesn't throw the curveball for strikes as it's more of a chase offering. Loses release point at times Generally repeats delivery well but mechanical issues lead to below average control and command that can be cleaned up. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Dibrell has a nice four pitch mix that has a good movement profile. He can change eye levels with his fastball using it north-south and his sharp, downward breaking ball that has plenty of depth. His slider flashes average and the changeup flashes above average. He has a strong starters build. Control needs to be improved and there is more in the tank with velocity, both which might be fixable with delaying upward arm movement and a shorter arm swing. It's back of the rotation starter stuff with a little more in the tank should he gain a tick on the fastball and in command.

Evaluator: Mike Kurland

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6'2
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Long legs, thin build. Plenty of room to fill in the frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; tall and fall motion. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort. Starts with glove chest high, plant leg about waist high. Slow, steady and simple delivery. Average hip/shoulder separation. Easily repeatable.

Fastball: Sometimes flat, 91-95 MPH fastball. Acosta does have life to it up in the zone. It appears to play better arm side. Control and command comes and goes. Grade: 50

Curveball: 78-83 MPH. It is inconsistent. Often categorized as a slider. Has a slurvy action at times and other times it will be more vertical. Will fall back on it if he loses feel of the fastball against RHH. Showed willingness to throw this pitch even down in the count. Tends to leave it up or bury it in the dirt more than you'd like but can throw it for strikes. Below average command but good movement most of the time. Grade: 45

Changeup: 85-88 MPH Tends to utilize it vs LHH. When he hits his spots, it looks solid. Decent horizontal movement and some fade to it when utilized arm side. Not as much glove side. Grade: 40

Control and Command: He lacks both. Tends to miss his spots and miss around the zone. Will bury offspeed offerings in the dirt. Will miss low with the fastball and the curve tends to miss outside on the glove side or hang up in the zone more than you’d like. Will attack the zone with fastballs if he falls behind. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: He showed some potential in flashes but consistently struggled with locating the zone and hitting his spots. The fastball and changeup combination show the most promise with the fastball being the better of the two. If he can find a consistent feel for them. If he cannot improve the command, the bullpen might be more suitable.

Evaluator: Danny Brackman

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 Round 8 (PHI)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Massive frame with long limbs. Built like an NBA small forward. High waist with strong legs and core. Maxed out body a while ago but strength and shape have remained intact. Good mobility for size.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only. Comes set with his back leg sunk deep and chest leaning slightly forward as a sort of pre-coil mechanism. Waist-high leg lift to activate hips further and good trunk rotation into medium effort 3/4 arm-slot that whips through and generates really good arm speed. Rather short extension relative to height but a strong lead-leg block and efficient energy transfer help repeatability for someone of his size.

Fastball: Utilized both 2-seam and 4-seam previously but appears he is pushing forward with just the 4-seam. Usually sat around 92-95 as a starter but is able to reach back for more in shorter stints. Was reportedly up to 98 at the ATS. Not much swing and miss and lots of contact throughout his MiLB career so moving to 4-seam only is very promising. Velo, spin axis, release height, and arm angle already make the fastball a plus offering with room for more. Cuts the 4-seam at times, but scrapping the 2-seam has helped him stay behind the baseball and keep the spin efficiency up. Grade: 60

Slider: Hard gyro in the mid-80s. Tunnels very well with the fastball from his arm-slot. Spin and movement profiles aren't anything overwhelming though a good gyro degree and high velo negate the need for much more, especially when it's working off the fastball. Does flatten out at times and leak back over the plate, leading to some hard contact. Grade: 55

Changeup: Mid-80s with lots of fade, often too much to control. Arm action and delivery likely both the reasons why the pitch moves a ton and why he has trouble controlling it. Lack of extension appears to hurt his feel for the release, though he does still drop in some beauties against LHHs on occasion. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Does a solid job staying around the zone, especially with the fastball and slider. Regaining feel after scrapping the 2-seam which was his primary offering will be essential. Flashes of a legit FB SL combo from a deceptive angle provides a tough AB, though hitters are practically guaranteed to see a pitch they can hit. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: McWilliams is working to optimize his 4-seam and slider in anticipation of becoming a pen arm going forward. His willingness to adapt this late in his career is encouraging, especially for an individual with his track record. He projects in a low-leverage role for now, but if these adjustments click, he could become a decent late inning option.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Evan Morin

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 22
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, slender frame. Room for added strength throughout. High waisted with long arms and legs. Athletic build fills up every inch of 6'3".

Hit: Square, upright swing with high hands and a firm shoulder width base. Soft leg lift that leads to explosive push through. Average bat speed generated from long legs and hips clearing early creating torque. He struggles with plate discipline as he stuck out 45% of the time in 2019 with only 31 walks in that time frame. He is an aggressive young hitter that will need to gain discipline as he gains maturity. Palmer is a sell out power hitter who had 7 HR and 21 XBH in 2019. His power shows potential, but will be rendered useless unless he can fix his approach and strikeout rate quickly. Grade: 30

Power: Palmer has average power that could be increased as he gains muscle mass. He shows the ability to hit home runs, but that is a matter of if he hits it given his strikeout rate. Power is one of his strengths on the field and could continue to get better as he develops. Grade: 50

Field: Athletic shortstop with third base abilities. Decent range laterally due to long legs and agility. Confident fielder with soft hands. Always sure to receive the ball before making a transfer. Standard infielder with room to grow. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm. Ball has zip across the diamond. Online carry from left side. Makes accurate throws and can make good throws from any location on the infield. Uses legs for extra power when needed. Grade: 55

Run: Hustles on the basepath. Average speed and athleticism. Good instinct out of the box. Grade: 50

Overall: Palmer is a power hitting infielder with a solid glove. His power could be an asset to the club, but will be useless unless he can find a way to be better at the plate. His strikeout rate is a red flag, but not a death sentence. He is young and still developing and will have better at bats as he matures, but if he does not fix it quickly, that will be a problem. His athleticism and strong arm will help to carry him defensively. Even though he is a strong player, he can still use some more added muscle throughout. Palmer has potential, but has a few things to work on before he can start being a bigger impact player.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall and wiry. Long levers. High waisted. Ideal frame with some additional room to fill out. Has strong hands. Athletic.

Hit: Crouched and open stance from the left side. Keeps his weight on his back foot. Hands and back elbow stay high. Some pre-pitch bat movement. Moderate leg kick as he loads and closes. Stance is more closed from the right side. His hands and elbow stay lower and the bat rests on his shoulder prior to loading. Minimal leg kick. Tends to be an aggressive, free swinger from both sides. Takes some big cuts. Has above-average bat speed and can drive the ball when he connects, but the swing path is inconsistent; it's mostly linear, but he falls victim to diving toward the ball and chopping it into the ground. He's consistently produced more ground ball outs than fly ball outs since signing. Shows a good feel for the zone and takes some walks, but he struggles with pitch recognition. His swing can also get long, and he often swings through offspeed stuff down and velocity away. Has struck out 33% of plate appearances since signing. Capable bunter. Needs to put more balls in the air. Grade: 40

Power: Plus raw power that he inconsistently gets to during games, primarily because of his over-aggressiveness and erratic bat path. Creates some natural loft off the bat, but does not impact the ball often enough. There's remaining physical projection, and he could have plus-plus raw power in time, but his approach will hinder his ultimate output. He needs to become more selective. Grade: 50

Field: Moves well for his size, but his footwork can get clunky at times. He has average range and can make the routine plays, but he will probably never standout with the glove. Shows good awareness on the dirt, and he has experience at 2B, SS, and 3B. He's passable at SS, but probably fits best at 3B. He may also grow into a corner OF spot. Grade: 45

Arm: Shows a strong arm with good carry across the infield. Throws on target in looks. Plays in the infield and fits in a corner OF spot. Grade: 55

Run: Timed 4.14 down the line front the left side and 11.68 home to third. Present above-average runner, but will slow with added bulk on his frame. Not a true threat to steal. Grade: 55

Overall: After being hyped as a potential breakout in 2019, full season ball proved to be a significant challenge. Newton's biggest issue is his aggressiveness and inability to make good contact. His power will be his calling card, but there are serious concerns as to whether he can unlock it. The upside as a power hitter is tantalizing, but it comes with significant risk.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 212 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, broad shoulders with long arms that have a ton of room left for growth. Really physical frame throughout. Eloy Jimenez type body.

Hit: A known swing tinkerer, Valdez has made small adjustments to his approach multiple times since earning the Mets organization. Operation now starts out of an open stance with his hands right below his ears. Will incorporate a high leg kick while lowering his hands to his chest. He will simultaneously bring his knee to his elbow, then fire his lead leg down combined with plus bat speed. Bat path will vary between creating some natural loft and a flat, line drive approach. Will work predominantly pull side and will abuse velocity, but free swinging approach will allow breaking balls to keep him out front and roll over the ball. Grade: 40

Power: Loudest carrying tool for Valdez. Natural raw strength in the frame along with plus bat speed allow for near plus pull side power. Bat path will flash as an optimal path to power often, and allows Valdez to attack fastballs at a quality point of contact consistently. Grade: 55

Field: Will make good reads and shows enough range to handle a corner outfield spot, but a bit uncoordinated in his lower half on long routes. Shows some flexibility when attacking balls and bends well at the waist, but lack of overall athleticism will curb the profile. Grade: 45

Arm: Valdez will show a ton of raw arm strength with some accuracy, but coming with a bunch of extra effort. Will throw his entire body into throws with a substantial amount of head whack. Gets good carry on throws, and has the frame and strength to evolve into a more composed thrower. Grade: 50

Run: Does not take a long stride for his frame, and therefore does not reach top speed quickly. Will lumber down the line at times but can get some momentum on XBHs. Grade: 40

Overall: The hulking 2018 international product fits the profile of a power hitting corner outfielder to a tee. Will show big raw power in the bat and the arm, albeit coming with some serious refinement needed in both areas. Valdez had a very loud showing in his professional debut in 2019 earning the Mets DSL hitter of the year title, and will look to build on that going into the 2021 season.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2012 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Big, long frame with long, lanky limbs. Average build that lacks a little muscle for a mid-twenties player. Pronounced butt, strong thighs, high waist, broad shoulders. Looks every bit of the listed 6'6". Room for weight up top, but seems like it may not be coming at this point without a change in weight room habits.

Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup with old school over-the-head move prior to hand break. High, pointed leg kick to the letters. Deliberate, low-effort delivery with low 3/4s arm slot, nearly sidearm. Good separation and scap retraction, even from the stretch. Arm is generally on time. High release point creates steep downward plane. Leg kick disappears from the stretch, but still relatively deliberate in his delivery, like a casual slide step.

Fastball: Sits 94-95, t97. Mainly features a sinker and mixes in a 4-seam on occasion. The sinker features a little more run than the four seam, but both pitches are rather flat despite good raw spin. Command is shaky; leaves it armside often, but dots corners and edges here and there. Plays up well after the curve and can be used as a strikeout pitch up in the zone as well as a ground ball inducer low and below the zone. When it's left over the heart, it's hammered. Plays down due to poor movement profile and command. Grade: 55

Curveball: 79-82. Tight spin with a pretty consistent 11-5 shape. Some are a little sharper than others, but never flashes more than above-average. Works it below the zone and off the plate gloveside, but leaves more up in the zone than you want. Doesn't command it especially well but can drop it in for a strike. Doesn't get as many whiffs as it could due to his inability to consistently locate it. Grade: 50

Changeup: 83-86; straight change with solid tumble and little fade. Inconsistent and lacks feel. Sells pretty well with arm speed. Tendency to yank it across the zone at times and doesn't command it very well in general. Used primarily against lefties. Flashes plus, but rarely. Leaves it up too often. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Very much a stuff over command profile, mostly just trying to find the zone and let the movement and velo do the work. Misses armside often and frequently spikes offspeed pitches in the dirt; liable to leave a fastball down the middle at least once an inning. Falls behind in counts often. Doesn't appear to command any pitch better than another. Inefficiency drives up pitch counts and will limit his ability to go deep in games. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Big, lanky right hander with solid velo and decent secondaries, but lacks command. Though his large build should support a starter's workload, his inefficiency on the mound makes him unlikely to go deep into games and more suited to a bulk or long relief role. His average stuff may play up in shorter stints, but the lack of command may keep it from being much more effective. The building blocks are still there for Kilome to be an effective MLB pitcher, even a back end starter, but he's going to need to optimize his arsenal to get more movement, develop better feel for his changeup, or harness his command a bit more. He has further to go in his development path than you'd like for someone who is approaching the latter half of his twenties.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 181 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2015 Round 5
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Big sturdy framed left-hander, looks bigger than listed 181 pounds. Broad shoulders, long legs and an unathletic looking frame. Szapucki had Tommy John in the middle of 2017, and didn't get back onto the mound until 2019 and had strict pitch counts upon his return.

Delivery & Mechanics: Inconsistent mechanics with a low 3/4 arm slot. Pitches from an abbreviated windup. Upper body squared towards home plate but lower half already angled towards first base. He also pitches from the first base side of the rubber. Adds deception by keeping front side closed but will fly open often, which leads to strike throwing issues. He also has an inconsistent stride and will vary his timing, which he doesn't need to do right now. Just find a nice repeatable motion and everything else should fall in place. It is a low effort delivery though, despite all the intricate movements.

Fastball: Pre-Tommy John the lefty was frequently bumping up into the upper 90s, now he primarily sits around 91-92 and can touch 94. He lives up in the zone with the heater and gets good carry. He doesn't necessarily need the fastball to get back to pre-TJ velo levels to have success since he will pitch off of the breaking ball at times. In putaway counts there's a 50/50 chance you'll get the fastball or breaking ball. Grade: 50

Curveball: Everywhere I've looked refers to this pitch as a curveball, but it moves more like a slider due to the lack of depth. It features horizontal movement and he will rely on the pitch heavily to get outs. He will throw it at the back foot of right-handers but also look to catch the outside corner. He's fearless and will also throw the pitch up in the zone to put hitters away. It's a high spin breaker, and had the highest spin rate of any breaking ball on the amateur circuit. Potential plus pitch with better command. Grade: 55

Changeup: Seldomly used third pitch, but one that has become more prominent after his Tommy John rehab. Pitch has good depth and fade against right-handers, but lacks consistency. Will throw a nasty change and the next time he throws it its a non-competitive offering. Only uses the pitch against right-handers. Pitch is good enough to keep him in a rotation, but his long-term role is more health than stuff related. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Szapucki struggles to consistently throw strikes due to the previously mentioned mechanical flaws. He commands his breaking ball better than his heater, but your opinion of Szapucki depends on when you've seen him, as he's wildly inconsistent from start to start despite impressive early minor league results. Will battle himself with high pitch counts. Don't look for him to go late in games as a starter. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Szapucki's ability to land a breaking ball for strikes and a fastball that could touch 97 really drove him up prospect lists early on and allowed him to dominate lineups at the lower levels of the minors. His spotty health record, he's had shoulder and elbow injuries, could push him to the bullpen. He has missed massive amounts of development over the last several seasons. He had TJ mid-way through 2017 that also cost him his 2018 season. 2019 saw him pitching on strict pitch counts for a majority of the season and then obviously the pandemic in 2020. He has the stuff to be a potential late inning reliever but the Mets should continue to see if he can start.

Evaluator: Joe Doyle

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Sturdy, strong with well-proportioned whippy arms. Wide shoulder frame with more room to grow in his core. Lower body strength present with plenty of upper body strength in the shoulders. Durability and injury have been massive issues.

Delivery & Mechanics: Violent, whippy arm action. Good extension and follow through on each pitch. Comes to the plate from a low release point and gets the ball out in front. 3/4 arm action. Violence could be a deterrent for future starter capabilities.

Fastball: Fastball has always been good. Generally 93-95, touching at 96. Armside run present. Spots the fastball with consistency in his short college appearances. Grade: 55

Slider: Sharp, tight breaking ball with two-plane, aggressive break. Generally 83 to 86. Wipeout offering that induces a ton of swing-and-miss. Controls the breaking ball arguably better than the fastball. Grade: 60

Changeup: Good arm speed and tumbling action. Generally 85 to 87. Spots low and inside better to righties than he does low-and-away to lefties. Movement profile is good, must improve command. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Fastball control has been good, not great. Slider consistency more often than not tops the heater. The changeup is streaky. Walks haven't been a huge concern, though Ginn hasn't been truly tested over long appearances in his collegiate career. Control: 50 | Command: 50

Overall: Ginn has an outside shot at starting at the big league level, but the durability concerns will need to see a big turnaround. It's not a matter of one injury here. We're talking about three years of fragility. The fastball/slider combination is very good, especially the slider. The changeup will also be key to allowing his arsenal to play twice through a lineup. More than likely, Ginn will slot in as a mid-leverage reliever who gets play in the 8th inning or as an opener for the Mets.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, lanky build. Overall body strength. Long, loose arms. Long, tapering legs. Room to fill out, more strength with maturity.

Hit: Open stance, hands high at head, high back elbow. Body upright with wide base. Simple load, small leg kick with slight hand hitch. Quick bat speed. Uppercut, creates natural loft. Good lower half drive, torque. Makes hard contact. Pull side approach, shows ability to go up the middle. Length in swing at times, leads to swing and miss tendencies. Room to grow in approach. Struggles with elite spin and elevated fastballs, better against LHP. Grade: 40

Power: Plus raw power, above average game power. Ball jumps off the bat, run production type power. Obvious strength, generates good bat speed. Bat path and approach create good loft. Good lower half torque, drives ball to left center frequently. Added strength will give power boost. Grade: 55

Field: Solid defensive actions. Will make routine play. Athletic movements, good body control. Moves decent to both sides, size and speed slightly hinder range. Reliable hands. Has basic skills needed, flashes ability to make tough play. Grade: 50

Arm: Live, strong arm. Carries through the bag. Good throwing mechanics. On target when body control there, can get erratic when feet aren't under him. Good ball transfer, quick release. Prototypical 3B arm. Grade: 55

Run: Well below-average speed. Slow first step out of box. Long strides, heavy footed. Labors to run, not built for speed. Doesn't always hustle. Grade: 30

Overall: Vientos' size immediately stands out. He has a tall, lanky body with obvious room to develop more strength. His power potential is his carrying tool. Quick bat speed and flyball mentality has potential to do damage. He needs to improve his spin recognition and swing consistency. Transitioned from SS to 3B entering proball. Moves well for a guy his size with reliable hands that allow him to make the routine play. His above average arm profiles well at 3B. Could improve his accuracy slightly, but arm is very much playable at the position. A well below-average runner, do not expect much on the bases. Likely a platoon type player with the chance to rely on power and develop into an average everyday regular.

Corniely is a big righty with a strong, durable frame. He's listed at 175 but already looks bigger than that.
