Feb 2021 Report
Evaluator: Joe Drake
Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2012 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster
Physical Description: Big, long frame with long, lanky limbs. Average build that lacks a little muscle for a mid-twenties player. Pronounced butt, strong thighs, high waist, broad shoulders. Looks every bit of the listed 6'6". Room for weight up top, but seems like it may not be coming at this point without a change in weight room habits.
Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup with old school over-the-head move prior to hand break. High, pointed leg kick to the letters. Deliberate, low-effort delivery with low 3/4s arm slot, nearly sidearm. Good separation and scap retraction, even from the stretch. Arm is generally on time. High release point creates steep downward plane. Leg kick disappears from the stretch, but still relatively deliberate in his delivery, like a casual slide step.
Fastball: Sits 94-95, t97. Mainly features a sinker and mixes in a 4-seam on occasion. The sinker features a little more run than the four seam, but both pitches are rather flat despite good raw spin. Command is shaky; leaves it armside often, but dots corners and edges here and there. Plays up well after the curve and can be used as a strikeout pitch up in the zone as well as a ground ball inducer low and below the zone. When it's left over the heart, it's hammered. Plays down due to poor movement profile and command. Grade: 55
Curveball: 79-82. Tight spin with a pretty consistent 11-5 shape. Some are a little sharper than others, but never flashes more than above-average. Works it below the zone and off the plate gloveside, but leaves more up in the zone than you want. Doesn't command it especially well but can drop it in for a strike. Doesn't get as many whiffs as it could due to his inability to consistently locate it. Grade: 50
Changeup: 83-86; straight change with solid tumble and little fade. Inconsistent and lacks feel. Sells pretty well with arm speed. Tendency to yank it across the zone at times and doesn't command it very well in general. Used primarily against lefties. Flashes plus, but rarely. Leaves it up too often. Grade: 45
Control and Command: Very much a stuff over command profile, mostly just trying to find the zone and let the movement and velo do the work. Misses armside often and frequently spikes offspeed pitches in the dirt; liable to leave a fastball down the middle at least once an inning. Falls behind in counts often. Doesn't appear to command any pitch better than another. Inefficiency drives up pitch counts and will limit his ability to go deep in games. Control: 40 | Command: 30
Overall: Big, lanky right hander with solid velo and decent secondaries, but lacks command. Though his large build should support a starter's workload, his inefficiency on the mound makes him unlikely to go deep into games and more suited to a bulk or long relief role. His average stuff may play up in shorter stints, but the lack of command may keep it from being much more effective. The building blocks are still there for Kilome to be an effective MLB pitcher, even a back end starter, but he's going to need to optimize his arsenal to get more movement, develop better feel for his changeup, or harness his command a bit more. He has further to go in his development path than you'd like for someone who is approaching the latter half of his twenties.
