Feb 2021 Report
Evaluator: Mike Kurland
Age: 22 yr
Height: 6'2
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible
Physical Description: Long legs, thin build. Plenty of room to fill in the frame.
Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; tall and fall motion. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort. Starts with glove chest high, plant leg about waist high. Slow, steady and simple delivery. Average hip/shoulder separation. Easily repeatable.
Fastball: Sometimes flat, 91-95 MPH fastball. Acosta does have life to it up in the zone. It appears to play better arm side. Control and command comes and goes. Grade: 50
Curveball: 78-83 MPH. It is inconsistent. Often categorized as a slider. Has a slurvy action at times and other times it will be more vertical. Will fall back on it if he loses feel of the fastball against RHH. Showed willingness to throw this pitch even down in the count. Tends to leave it up or bury it in the dirt more than you'd like but can throw it for strikes. Below average command but good movement most of the time. Grade: 45
Changeup: 85-88 MPH Tends to utilize it vs LHH. When he hits his spots, it looks solid. Decent horizontal movement and some fade to it when utilized arm side. Not as much glove side. Grade: 40
Control and Command: He lacks both. Tends to miss his spots and miss around the zone. Will bury offspeed offerings in the dirt. Will miss low with the fastball and the curve tends to miss outside on the glove side or hang up in the zone more than you’d like. Will attack the zone with fastballs if he falls behind. Control: 40 | Command: 30
Overall: He showed some potential in flashes but consistently struggled with locating the zone and hitting his spots. The fastball and changeup combination show the most promise with the fastball being the better of the two. If he can find a consistent feel for them. If he cannot improve the command, the bullpen might be more suitable.
