Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Evan Morin

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 6
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Muscular, athletic body. Ideal body type for a left side infielder. Confident movements that are loose and smooth.

Hit: Slightly open stance with a little crouch; hands high at the head with an athletic base. Small leg lift with uppercut swing providing average bat speed. Rotational swing using strength to find power. Aggressive in at bats, but may be too eager early in counts. Uppercut swing leads to less hits and more strikeouts, so he will have to learn to find a way on base more. His power will be an asset, but may be useless if he doesn't have better at bats. Grade: 30

Power: Simmons has good raw power, but struggles to present it in games. His power is very apparent when you see his frame and swing. It will be a strong asset in the future, but he needs to have better at bats to be able to show it off. Grade: 55

Field: Smooth rhythm from the left side of the diamond with generally soft hands. Always moving his feet in the infield both through and around the ball. Occasionally fielding is too loose - increased reps can prevent simple errors. Will need work tracking ball into glove as he progresses. Lots of room for potential improvement. Grade: 40

Arm: Solid arm across the field. Ball has good zip and accuracy as he works through the ball well. Ball shows carry - no struggle throwing from anywhere in the infield. Grade: 55

Run: Quick hustle on the basepaths. Gets out of the box well - good speed down the line. Average knowledge on base, likes to be aggressive and take another base if he can. Grade: 50

Overall: Simmons is built well for his position - a power hitting infielder. That power has been shown off many times through BP or in his extra base hits, but that power may be useless unless he can find more hits. His eager uppercut swings put him in a role of home run or bust, which could be ok as long as he finds other ways to get on base. A lot of grounder reps would be a good investment because he has potential to become a good fielder with the strength of his arm. He will be 21 rolling into the 2021 season, so he has time to work on his weaknesses, but needs to fix them soon to be a top rated prospect. His physical attributes show that there is a lot of potential if he's able to put it all together.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 22
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, slender frame. Room for added strength throughout. High waisted with long arms and legs. Athletic build fills up every inch of 6'3".

Hit: Square, upright swing with high hands and a firm shoulder width base. Soft leg lift that leads to explosive push through. Average bat speed generated from long legs and hips clearing early creating torque. He struggles with plate discipline as he stuck out 45% of the time in 2019 with only 31 walks in that time frame. He is an aggressive young hitter that will need to gain discipline as he gains maturity. Palmer is a sell out power hitter who had 7 HR and 21 XBH in 2019. His power shows potential, but will be rendered useless unless he can fix his approach and strikeout rate quickly. Grade: 30

Power: Palmer has average power that could be increased as he gains muscle mass. He shows the ability to hit home runs, but that is a matter of if he hits it given his strikeout rate. Power is one of his strengths on the field and could continue to get better as he develops. Grade: 50

Field: Athletic shortstop with third base abilities. Decent range laterally due to long legs and agility. Confident fielder with soft hands. Always sure to receive the ball before making a transfer. Standard infielder with room to grow. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm. Ball has zip across the diamond. Online carry from left side. Makes accurate throws and can make good throws from any location on the infield. Uses legs for extra power when needed. Grade: 55

Run: Hustles on the basepath. Average speed and athleticism. Good instinct out of the box. Grade: 50

Overall: Palmer is a power hitting infielder with a solid glove. His power could be an asset to the club, but will be useless unless he can find a way to be better at the plate. His strikeout rate is a red flag, but not a death sentence. He is young and still developing and will have better at bats as he matures, but if he does not fix it quickly, that will be a problem. His athleticism and strong arm will help to carry him defensively. Even though he is a strong player, he can still use some more added muscle throughout. Palmer has potential, but has a few things to work on before he can start being a bigger impact player.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA (TOR)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Long legs, high waisted. Slender frame with long, somewhat muscular arms. Body type that allows him at 6'1" to have good fastball velocity.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only with above-average arm speed; slow, chest high leg kick then drops into back leg with a quick and explosive push off. Glove hand and body pull hard down bringing body to side for overhead release. Long, loose arm action with good extension. Natural and experienced motion that is repeated well.

Fastball: 95-97; Above-average pitch. Low fastball is downhill, high fastballs tend to be more flat due to height of release. Some late run. High velocity leaves hitters off balance for much slower breaking ball. Decent command around zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: 80-82; big velocity gap from fastball, leaving large contrast between pitches. 11/5 action- occasionally 12/6 with good tumble and spin rate. Command on this pitch depends on location in the zone. Keeps it low, gets hitters to chase out. Grade: 55

Control and Command: He works both sides of the plate. Low fastball locates well - belt high and above starts to lose accuracy. Backdoor curveball can be located well, gloveside he tends to spike it. Understands what he wants to throw, but overdoes it when he pushes and hangs pitches. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Jimenez has a mature mound presence and could be a power, two pitch reliever. He had 1.1 innings MLB experience with the Giants in 2020 and could see a little more with the A's if he is able to locate his pitches better. Age may play a factor as he is 27, which means he must fix his accuracy quickly or they will move onto younger potential. 2021 may be the deciding season for his future.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 1 CBA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Muscular build with strong, powerful lower half. Tall frame that is near full maturity.

Hit: Square, shoulder width stance. Upright with hands at the shoulders. Toe tap timing leads to strong back side push for great bat speed. Semi uppercut swing gives high launch angle from the nature of being a power hitter. Confident maturity in the box and is ready to hit every pitch. Short to the ball with great extension upon contact. Grade: 45

Power: Provides a lot of raw power stemming from strong thighs and legs. Loud, deep homers when given his pitch. Power to all fields, extra to pull side. Power is shown in game and will be shown more with development of hit tool. Grade: 60

Field: Reads ball well off the bat. Plays loose with soft hands and hustles to every ball. Can manage any position in the outfield. Needs to work on speed more to have better range in the field. Grade: 40

Arm: He throws the ball with good backspin and carry. Uses whole body and throws over the top. Fringe-average velocity. Quick release may help with lower velocity. Grade: 45

Run: Below-average speed. Quick out of the box. Stays low and aggressively tries to stretch out extra bases. Power in the box for stand up doubles allows for less of a need for high speed. Grade: 40

Overall: Rooker provides a ton of power and will continue to have many XBH in the future. He did well in his 7 games with the Twins during the 2020 season, batting .316 with a home run off Rays' Tyler Glasnow, until he suffered a fractured forearm. There is plenty of potential for him to become a consistent hitter that can contribute to his club. He has a defensive gap from an MLB starter that he will need to fix before he can become an everyday player. Approaching 27, he will need to start producing even more or else he may find himself in an up and down role.
