Feb 2021 Report
Evaluator: Joe Doyle
Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2
RuleV: 2023
Physical Description: Sturdy, strong with well-proportioned whippy arms. Wide shoulder frame with more room to grow in his core. Lower body strength present with plenty of upper body strength in the shoulders. Durability and injury have been massive issues.
Delivery & Mechanics: Violent, whippy arm action. Good extension and follow through on each pitch. Comes to the plate from a low release point and gets the ball out in front. 3/4 arm action. Violence could be a deterrent for future starter capabilities.
Fastball: Fastball has always been good. Generally 93-95, touching at 96. Armside run present. Spots the fastball with consistency in his short college appearances. Grade: 55
Slider: Sharp, tight breaking ball with two-plane, aggressive break. Generally 83 to 86. Wipeout offering that induces a ton of swing-and-miss. Controls the breaking ball arguably better than the fastball. Grade: 60
Changeup: Good arm speed and tumbling action. Generally 85 to 87. Spots low and inside better to righties than he does low-and-away to lefties. Movement profile is good, must improve command. Grade: 55
Control and Command: Fastball control has been good, not great. Slider consistency more often than not tops the heater. The changeup is streaky. Walks haven't been a huge concern, though Ginn hasn't been truly tested over long appearances in his collegiate career. Control: 50 | Command: 50
Overall: Ginn has an outside shot at starting at the big league level, but the durability concerns will need to see a big turnaround. It's not a matter of one injury here. We're talking about three years of fragility. The fastball/slider combination is very good, especially the slider. The changeup will also be key to allowing his arsenal to play twice through a lineup. More than likely, Ginn will slot in as a mid-leverage reliever who gets play in the 8th inning or as an opener for the Mets.
