Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6-1, 160. Lean body with ample remaining physical projection.

Delivery & Mechanics: Vertical arm slot. Gets down mound well with slightly above-average extension, leading to slightly lower than average release height.

Fastball: Sourced Trackman data has average fastball velocity at 90.5 mph with high raw spin (2455 RPM). As one may expect with vertical arm action and high spin, induces plus vertical action. Grade: 50

Curveball: Sourced Trackman data has average curveball velocity at 79.2 mph with above-average raw spin (2668 RPM). Grade: 50

Control and Command: Frame and athleticism lead to command projection. Didn't issue a walk in 10.1 innings in GCL in 2019, his only stateside experience to date. Control: 50 | Command: 50

Overall: An international signee out of the Netherlands, Robberse has all of 10.1 innings of pro ball. There's very little certainty in the profile because of that, but he's an intriguing low-minors sleeper. Robberse has a lean, projectable frame that should allow him to add velocity in the coming seasons. He threw a ton of strikes in his limited pro time, and his Trackman data (raw spin, low release height, vertical life on the fastball) are promising. If he more consistently sits in the mid-90's as he gets stronger, it could be a plus pitch that drives the profile.

Aug 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 232 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 3 (SD)
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6-5, 232. Big, prototype starter's frame. Tall and muscular with sloped shoulders. No physical projection remaining but he's already sufficiently strong.

Mechanics: Fairly low effort delivery. Throws from 3/4 arm slot. Exaggerated lean of upper half shows the ball pretty early to left-handed hitters. A little bit of stiffness at release driven by fringe athleticism; doesn't really get over his front hip which could inhibit his ability to work glove-side.

Fastball: Was into the high-90's at UGA; has been 93-97 in minors this season. Plays below its plus velocity because of suboptimal shape. Fastball lacks life and opposing hitters can stay on top of it when he works up in the zone. Better used down for weak, groundball contact. Grade: 50

Slider: Breaking ball shape can be a little inconsistent but it's plus at its best. Can get bat-missing depth at high-80's velocity when he snaps off a good one but also gets a little slurvy when he leaves it up in the zone. Likely settles in an as above-average pitch as he develops a little more consistency with release point. Grade: 55

Changeup: High-80's changeup can be really deceptive. Mimics arm speed well and the changeup shape mirrors that of the fastball. Needs to locate the pitch more consistently down and to his arm-side but has the potential to neutralize left-handed hitters. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Solid strike-thrower. Better control than command; hits the strike zone but can be inconsistent with his locations within the zone. Fringy flexibility in the lower half can impede his ability to work with precision to glove-side. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Wilcox has the makings of a mid-rotation starter, based primarily on the quality of his secondary pitches. The fastball's not as effective as the radar gun indicates, so it'll be critical for him to develop consistency with and creatively sequence his offspeed stuff.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Listed at 5'10, 170. On the smaller side for a big league pitcher, particularly a reliever. In good shape but not an overpowering mound presence.

Mechanics: Works exclusively from the stretch. Delivery has a lot of moving parts, with glove and front leg jumping forward toward the hitter. Short arm action makes it difficult to pick the ball up out of his hand. High 3/4 arm slot. Average athlete.

Fastball: 92-94 MPH fastball. Lacks life; doesn't get many chases above the belt and can get barreled up in strike zone. Grade: 50

Curveball: Breaking ball drives the profile. It's a plus low-80's curve with bite and power. 11-5 shape. Plays best when located down and glove-side and is particularly tough for right-handed hitters to pick up. Grade: 60

Control and Command: More consistent throwing the fastball in the zone than the breaking ball. Works north-south with the fastball but doesn't look as comfortable commanding it glove-side. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Gilliam profiles as an up-and-down reliever. I'd like to see him lean on the curveball a little more early in counts because the fastball, despite average velocity, is hittable in the strike zone. A breaking ball-first approach would likely lead to high walk rates but enable him to continue to miss bats at the big league level, as he's done with ease in the minors. Gilliam could be an option for the MLB bullpen next year.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 240 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Listed size of 6'3, 240 looks outdated. Was heavyset at the University of Houston but slimmed down by 2020 MLB debut. Physically maxed out; tree trunk thighs with rounded, muscular upper half. Underwent a Tommy John surgery in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Pretty stiff delivery; struggles to get out over his front hip at release, giving him some difficulty staying on top of his offspeed stuff. Some effort and head movement at release. 3/4 arm slot. Below-average athlete.

Fastball: Romero was 91-93 in majors last season; had been more reliably in the mid-90's as a draft prospect. Reasonable to project him to add a tick or two as he gets further from surgery and on a more regular workload but he probably never recovers the 94-97 he had in college. Fastball has some backspin that gives it decent life at the top of the zone. Grade: 55

Slider: 80-83 MPH slider drives the profile. Has good lateral action with some depth and bat-missing bite. Inconsistent feel for locating but it's a plus pitch when he spots it down and glove-side. Grade: 60

Changeup: 83-85 MPH change. Inconsistent feel but flashed above-average changeup. Has good arm-side break but sometimes slows down the arm speed. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Poor present control. Very little feel for consistently locating secondaries and struggles to throw fastball in the strike zone in obvious 'take situations’ for the hitter. Due to limited minor-league reps (has been both injured and suspended at times), might be a bit of a late bloomer as a strike-thrower. Nevertheless, age and below-average athleticism mean he<92>s probably best suited in the bullpen. Control: 40 | Command: 40

Overall: Romero has a potential starter's repertoire but various factors mean he's more likely to wind up a long-term reliever. He doesn't have much present control or command; that should improve as he gets more minor-league reps, but his lack of athleticism means strike-throwing was always going to be a struggle. Plus, the Nationals have a need for immediate bullpen help. With Romero already on the 40-man roster, I think Washington's more likely to get him to the majors as a left-handed bullpen piece with plus stuff rather than give him the minor-league reps he'd need for another couple years to have a shot to develop starter command and feel.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'0, 195 pounds. Average build with a little bit of room for added muscle mass in the lower half. Average athlete. Had Tommy John surgery in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Rhythmic, low-effort delivery with 3/4 arm slot. Gets down mound well and stays on-line to the plate. Not much head movement. Ball is quickly up near his head before foot strike, enabling on-time delivery.

Fastball: 87-92, T93, as a freshman. Lower arm slot enables some sink when he works down in the zone but high spin helps it stay on plane despite the arm angle when he works above the belt. Grade: 50

Slider: 78-81 MPH with short, horizontal break. Almost has a cutter movement profile but at slider velocity. Best used to jam lefties for weak contact. Grade: 45

Changeup: 74-77 MPH; plus velocity gap off fastball. Slows down delivery a bit on the changeup, which decreases deception. Doesn't have a ton of depth, more arm-side run. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Decent athlete with a low-effort delivery; throws a fair amount of strikes. Has some feel for working east-west and pitching with intent to his glove-side but overall missed the zone too often as a freshman. Limited reps between missing sophomore season due to Tommy John and most of junior season because of COVID-19; could project some late command gains with more playing time. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: The Braves are betting on Strider's arm strength and lofty college strikeout rates (89 punchouts in 63 career innings as an ACC arm). His secondaries and strike-throwing both need to improve, but that's possible given his limited innings in college. Overall, he probably settles in middle relief.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'2", 220 pounds. Very physical; thick, muscular upper half. No physical projection remaining. Below-average athlete.

Delivery & Mechanics: High-effort delivery with some stiffness throughout. Seemed to shorten arm action a bit from 2019 to 2020, enabling him to be more on time. Has some head movement at release. Exaggerated dip of front shoulder leads to high 3/4 arm slot but allows hitters to pick up the ball early, decreasing deception.

Fastball: 90-93 MPH. Fastball has heavy downhill plane with some sink and arm-side action. Plays down a bit because of subpar in-zone command. Grade: 45

Curveball: 78-82 MPH. Works in a more vertical breaking ball as he faces the opposing lineup multiple times. Curve flashes good bite but can blend with his slider at times. Typically average although it flashes above. Grade: 50

Slider: 84-86 MPH. Best pitch in his arsenal. Has two-plane tilt with plus bite and tight spin. Generates plenty of whiffs. Grade: 60

Changeup: 85-87 MPH. Infrequently utilized fourth pitch; occasionally mixes it in against left-handers. Has some feel for creating arm-side run but is generally too firm. Not great feel for locating. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Control-over-command pitcher; throws fastball for strikes but misses his spots within the zone. Breaking balls are typically close enough to the zone to generate chases. Walk rate was down over four starts during his draft season; seemingly shortened arm action could explain that improvement, but he'll need to prove he can sustain strike-throwing gains over a longer term. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Elder projects as a middle reliever. He seemingly cleaned up his delivery and made some strides with his command during his junior season at Texas. Even so, he's not a great athlete and probably won't ever have particularly good in-zone command. His low-90's velo and plus slider fit comfortably in the middle innings mix if his fringe command and/or below-average changeup eventually push him to the bullpen.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 3
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 6'1, 195. Very narrow frame; no remaining physical projection. Slender shoulders and hips limit ability to add muscle mass.

Hit: Quiet setup; wide base with bat rested on shoulder and a bit of pre-pitch wiggle. Small leg kick. Plus bat speed but it's more of a gap-to-gap approach; very flat swing plane as an amateur. Fringe bat control; makes a fair amount of contact but has a tendency to mishit pitches he should barrel up. Aggressive approach; attacks pitches early in counts but not so swing-happy as to undermine the rest of the offensive tools. Grade: 40

Power: Not overly physical but quick-twitch actions enable some explosiveness in the swing. Average raw power. In-game power limited as an amateur by lack of loft in the swing; hasn't had game reps in pro ball to gauge if Astros have made alterations to swing plane. Grade: 40

Field: Played mostly corner outfield in deference to Jesse Franklin at Michigan. Would expect him to get more center field reps as he climbs the minor-league ladder. Was easily plus in a corner; would likely be above-average in center. Grade: 60

Arm: Has more than enough arm for any outfield position; throws with easy zip and carry. Grade: 60

Run: Clocked plus-plus run times as an amateur; has the elite speed necessary to track down fly balls in the gaps and take extra bags on the basepaths. Grade: 70

Overall: Brewer's plus-plus athleticism makes him an interesting upside play. He's an impact defender and baserunner, which should carry him to the big leagues. Brewer has some bat speed and a chance to hit for some power, but that requires a successful alteration to his currently-level bat path. The cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season really hurts players like this. A former JUCO star, Brewer only had one season facing decent competition at the University of Michigan. He'll be 24 years old in August. It'll be an uphill battle for him to get the repetitions he needs as a hitter if he's to become an everyday player before the athleticism carrying the whole profile starts to wane.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 208 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2017 Draft, Round 21
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Listed at 6'0, 208. Relatively high waist. Thick lower half; strong thighs. Narrow shoulders without overt physicality in upper half. Maxed out physically but fairly strong already.

Hit: Closed, upright stance. Toe tap as fairly quiet timing mechanism, but actual swing is high-effort. Leans deep into back leg, naturally lowering his hands before he brings them forward; leads to extreme uphill bat path. Swings hard and has above-average bat speed but below-average bat control. Stands well off the plate and has a pull-oriented approach; doesn't cover outer half well. Patient approach; draws walks but has notable areas within the strike zone where he can be attacked by MLB pitching. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power to pull side. Has an uphill, pull-oriented bat path that should enable him to get to power in games on pitches on the inner half. Pretty obviously shaped by modern hitting coaching (swing mechanics look similar to a lot of Dodgers' player dev success stories, particularly Chris Taylor). Approach isn't conducive to driving pitches on the other half with authority, but he could run into 15-20 homers a year with everyday reps. Grade: 50

Field: Has played mostly corner outfield in the minors. Average athlete best suited for a corner at the big league level. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength; functional at all three outfield positions but most natural fit in left. Grade: 50

Run: Slightly above-average runner. Doesn't steal many bases but covers a fair amount of ground underway. Grade: 50

Overall: McCormick's a scouting and player development success story. A former 21st-round pick, he had a breakout 2019 season in the high minors and earned a 40-man roster spot with Houston last year. He has some mechanical similarities (namely the steep uphill, pull-oriented swing path) with other late-blooming breakout hitters. McCormick doesn't cover the outer half of the plate, which MLB pitchers could be equipped to exploit. But he's a near-term big leaguer with pull power, patience and some speed. I think he's at least right-handed platoon bat with a non-zero chance of hitting for enough power to be a regular.

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 155 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 5-10, 155. Short, narrow frame. A little underdeveloped physically, could be room for a little more mass in the shoulders, but he's always going to be atypically small for a right-hander.

Delivery & Mechanics: Leans toward first base over front hip before release; that enables high 3/4 arm slot. Plus-plus arm speed; appears to hide ball well before exploding forward, leading to a little deception. Above-average athlete.

Fastball: 93-96. Works heavily up in the zone; fastball stays fairly straight and on plane. Doesn't miss a ton of bats but has a tendency to work just above the barrel for lazy fly balls. Grade: 55

Slider: Doesn't have huge length but gets decent depth. Advanced ability to locate glove-side and below the barrel. Grade: 55

Changeup: Power changeup model. Has good downward movement but plays firm and doesn't appear to consistently deceive hitters. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Solid strike-thrower for a teenager. Has shown ability to locate fastballs up and sliders down. Occasionally speeds up his delivery and overthrows but is athletic enough to develop consistency with reps. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Henriquez's fantastic numbers in Low-A in 2019 (4.50 ERA, 27.7% strikeout rate, 7.6% walk rate as a 19-year-old) were likely inflated a bit by a sheltered role. He never exceeded six innings, and only faced the middle of an opposing lineup for a third time in four of his nineteen starts. That could hint at a future as a five-and-dive starter or multi-inning reliever. Henriquez throws fairly hard, has a solid slider and should throw strikes at a league average rate. But there's probably no plus pitch here and his power changeup, despite good movement, isn't located consistently enough to fool opposing hitters.

Physical Description: Listed at 6'2, 217. Physically maxed out; strong and muscular but very stiff.

Hit: Slightly open stance, hands set up low and away from body. Above-average bat speed with pull-first approach. Some swing length and very poor bat control lead to a lot of swing-and-miss, even on hittable pitches within the strike zone. Really struggles to handle breaking stuff, especially against left-handed pitching. Average plate discipline. Grade: 30

Power: Above-average raw power. Has the pull-oriented uphill bat path to get to some of that in games but also swings through too many pitches he should drive. Grade: 50

Field: Doesn't move well laterally behind the plate. Slow hands as a receiver likely to lead to below-average pitch framing. Grade: 40

Arm: Showed plus arm strength with carry to second base but inconsistent throwing accuracy as an amateur. Grade: 55

Run: Well below-average athlete and runner. Grade: 30

Overall: McCann's a 'three true outcomes' player whose limitations on both sides of the ball probably limit him to a role as a third catcher. He's strong, with enough raw power and selectiveness to draw some walks and hit a few home runs but his hefty strikeout totals limit his offensive ceiling. McCann's a below-average receiver, although the potential implementation of an electronic strike zone could help him stick behind the plate. He'll need to do so, because he's not a good enough hitter to play first base regularly.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'4, 225. Good frame; long, muscular build with a little more room for mass in the lower half.

Delivery & Mechanics: Fringe athlete, delivery looks a bit stiff. Shorter arm action than expected for someone this tall- allows him to get his arm up near his head by foot strike. Lack of athleticism more of an issue at release. Struggles to get over front hip and finish pitches glove-side. High 3/4 arm slot with notable head movement at release.

Fastball: Mostly 93-95 MPH as a starter, can get up to 97. Sinker profile, pitch has good arm-side tail but doesn't have the carry at the top of the strike zone that plays for whiffs. Grade: 55

Curveball: Also looked to feature a mid-80's power curve as an occasional fourth pitch. Possibly a variation on his slider but the curveball is a little more north-south. Doesn't have bat-missing action on its own but works as a sporadically used offering to keep opposing hitters off balance. Grade: 45

Slider: Shows a good, vertically oriented slider. Doesn't have much lateral movement but has enough power and bite to get whiffs below the strike zone, particularly against right-handed hitters. Grade: 60

Changeup: Flashes an above-average changeup with good velocity gap and some arm-side fade. Figures to be a developmental focus in pro ball because feel was inconsistent and usage was sporadic at Michigan. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Imprecise fastball location. Has a tendency to miss up and arm-side with the heater. Because the fastball doesn't have great carry, that could lead to authoritative contact against higher-level hitters. Between freshman year as a reliever and shortened junior season, has had somewhat limited reps. That could lead to some late command development (his walk rate improved each year in college) but fringe athleticism that inhibits his ability to work to his glove side probably means he winds up in the bullpen. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Criswell shows mid-rotation stuff on his best days. He backs up a low-mid 90's sinker with a plus slider, and he flashes a deceptive changeup that could mitigate the platoon problems that sinker-slider pitchers tend to face. He'll need to refine the consistency of the secondaries (particularly the changeup) but his pitch mix is rather promising. The bigger obstacle to Criswell emerging as a rotation fixture is command. He's not a very good athlete who ran fairly high walk rates in college. Unless he dramatically improves his ability to locate the fastball, he's probably best suited as a reliever, albeit one with the repertoire depth to work multiple innings effectively.

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 260 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA (MIN)
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed at 6-4, 260. On-mound presence; tall, boxy frame. Physically developed, no remaining projection. Thick lower half with massive thighs.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works solely from the stretch; rare look for a starting pitcher but leads to atypical simplicity in his delivery. Throws with extremely little effort. Low 3/4 arm slot with a longer arm stroke; that combination of arm angle and long arm action give left-handed hitters a really long look at the ball before it leaves his hand.

Fastball: Works 90-93. Low arm slot not conducive to generating vertical hop on the fastball. Plays horizontally with what appears to be deliberate variation in the movement; can run it arm-side to jam right-handed hitters or cut it when working glove-side. Plays much better against righties. Grade: 45

Curveball: Fourth pitch in his arsenal. Has a little more bite than the slider but lacks traditional curveball depth. Grade: 45

Slider: Sweepy, mid-80's slider. Locates glove-side and down. Pitch has some two-plane movement but doesn't have the bite to miss many bats at higher levels. Grade: 45

Changeup: Advanced feel for vertically oriented changeup. Mimics fastball arm speed to aid deception and has enough drop to tumble below the barrel. Best bat-missing secondary. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Repeats delivery despite average athleticism because it's so simple. Can throw the fastball in the zone when needed to work back into counts. Advanced ability to locate secondaries down in the zone: changeup arm-side, slider glove-side. Fringe raw stuff might force him to nibble a little more against higher-level hitters but projects for plus control in a vacuum. Advanced understanding for reading hitters' swings and sequencing accordingly. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Teng's a pitchability right-hander acquired from the Twins as part of the 2019 Sam Dyson trade. Physical with a low-effort delivery, he should have a better chance than most pitchers to stay healthy. Other than an above-average changeup, his arsenal is just OK. Teng's fastball doesn't have the ride to get above barrels, and the breaking stuff is fringy. But he has good feel for the finer arts of pitching and throws plenty of strikes. He projects as a dependable back-of-the-rotation starter, particularly if the changeup allows him to handle left-handed hitters despite their favorable looks at his lower arm slot.

Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Heavyset for most of his time in college, deserves plenty of credit for reshaping his body. Still a big guy, listed at 6'3," 215 pounds, but with a much more toned physique. Tall, thick frame; muscular upper body. Physically maxed out.

Hit: Slightly open stance, hands behind head. Big leg kick. Long, sweepy bat path. Swing is a bit disjointed, as he transfers weight onto his front leg early; that can leave him susceptible to offspeed stuff and drives a pull-heavy approach. Below-average bat control; concerning amount of swing-and-miss in the strike zone. Average strike zone awareness. Grade: 30

Power: Has plus, strength-driven raw power. Can generate authoritative pull-side contact even when his hitting timing is off. Flatter plane on swing could affect his ability to get to all of his raw power in games. Grade: 55

Field: Has played primarily third base in college and minors but likely projects to first at major league level; below-average athlete who probably gets pushed off third by a rangier defender. Grade: 40

Arm: Big arm strength that is more than sufficient for third base if his range proves sufficient to stay there. Grade: 60

Run: Below-average runner due to his size. Grade: 40

Overall: Having just turned 22, Lewis is young for a 2019 college draftee. He's strong enough to drive balls with authority, thanks largely to a ton of work to reshape his body, which reflects well on his future work ethic. That profile makes him more interesting than most fourth-round picks, but Lewis' most likely future remains as a power-hitting bench bat. He figures to run high strikeout rates throughout his career because he doesn't have great natural timing or bat control at the plate. For a player who might wind up limited to first base, that's probably not enough to play every day.

Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, muscular frame. Thick lower half, toned calves. Muscular upper half; strong, broad shoulders. Physically maxed out.

Hit: Upright, open stance. Pull-oriented hitting approach; front hip has a tendency to fly open, leaving him vulnerable to offspeed stuff and anything on the outer half of the plate. Some head movement during the swing; below-average bat control. Above-average bat speed. Advanced, patient approach. Grade: 30

Power: Above-average raw power, especially from the left side; plays down in-games because of generally inefficient use of lower half in swing. Flatter swing path geared for lower-angle contact. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well laterally behind the plate. Has good hands and is adept at blocking and picking balls in the dirt. Pitch framing technique needs polish but has the hands and mental aptitude to improve in that area. Should be solid-average defensive catcher. Grade: 50

Arm: Quick transfer behind the plate; fringe raw arm strength and accuracy. Grade: 45

Run: Well below-average runner; not a particularly twitchy athlete. Grade: 30

Overall: Taylor's production at Virginia Tech (cumulative .332/.436/.495 slash in 237 plate appearances) was fantastic. It's difficult to perform at that high a level in the ACC as an underclassman, much less while logging most of your defensive innings at catcher. He's not a particularly toolsy player. Instead, he gets by with an advanced feel for the strike zone and a willingness to work deep counts. That's a profile that's tough to rely upon against MLB-caliber pitching, but Taylor has enough raw power and defensive skills to project as a backup or third catcher at the highest level.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Medium frame. Not particularly physical but narrow shoulders and hips leave limited room for physical projection.

Hit: Slightly open stance. Leg kick as timing mechanism. Loose, athletic swing; hands work in an efficient, tight circle. Slightly uphill attack angle to lift pitches down in the strike zone. Above-average bat control. Good strike zone awareness, although he occasionally gets out in front of offspeed stuff and pulls it on the ground. Grade: 55

Power: Not especially physical; most of his over-the-fence power is limited to the pull side. Has the ability to work the opposite-field gap but his slugging output is more likely to come from a high volume of doubles than home runs. Grade: 45

Field: Infield hands are fine, but he's not the quick twitch, high-end athlete typical of major-league shortstops. Fringy lateral quickness probably pushes him off shortstop to second base full-time. Grade: 40

Arm: Fringe arm strength; enough to play second base but doesn't have the ability to zip the ball across his body or off-platform from shortstop. Combined with fringe range, probably limits him to the right side of the infield and/or corner outfield. Grade: 45

Run: Below-average runner; doesn't get to full speed particularly quickly and has short strides. Grade: 40

Overall: Estevez is an offense-minded player who should hit his way to the big leagues in some capacity. He has the ability to work the whole field and consistently make line drive contact, which should help him run high batting averages on balls in play. He'll likely also limit strikeouts, which should keep his on-base percentage up despite a history of fringe-average walk rates. He'll need to hit, though, since the rest of the profile is uninspiring. Estevez isn't a great athlete and doesn't have big power. His most obvious path to an everyday role is as a hit-over-power second baseman, a profile teams have devalued a bit in recent years. Almost exclusively a middle infielder to this point, it wouldn't be surprising to see Estevez get some work at first base or even in left field to broaden his defensive profile and make a bat-first utility role more plausible.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall, high-waisted body. Broad shoulders with some muscle mass. Even entering age 25 season, seemingly has a little bit of room for mass in lower half.

Hit: Holds hands behind head. Toe tap. Long arms lead to a sweepy bat path; leaves him susceptible to high velocity on the inner half. Steep uphill bat path through contact. Bat leaves the hitting zone very quickly, leading to lots of swing-and-miss in the zone. Below-average bat control limits Peters' ability to cover different quadrants. Peters is patient and has a discerning feel for the strike zone; will occasionally get too far out on his front foot against offspeed stuff but isn't afraid to take pitches and work deep counts. Grade: 30

Power: Has plus-plus raw power to all fields. Uphill bat path is geared for loft. Poor bat-to-ball skills could limit in-game power a bit but Peters has 30-homer potential. Angular bat path and ability to spray balls to all fields due to significant strength and bat speed. Legit 70 raw in batting practice. Grade: 60

Field: Capable of playing anywhere in the outfield; more athletic than one would expect from a player his size. Should be average in center field, would be above-average if bumped into a corner. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm is sufficient to play anywhere in the outfield. Grade: 50

Run: Huge stride length leads to deceptively plus speed; accelerates quickly. Uses speed effectively in the field with great makeup time and the ability to close gaps. Moves extremely well for 6-foot-6. Grade: 60

Overall: Peters' strikeout rate probably prevents him from playing everyday. He has struck out in around 30% of plate appearances at each minor-league level, which figures to bump up a few more points against MLB pitching. It's really difficult to be an above-average hitter with that much swing and miss. But Peters does everything else well and should be a high-quality role player. He can play all throughout the outfield and has the swing plane to tap into his huge raw power.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'2", 220 pounds. Slightly larger than average build; tree trunk thighs; strong forearms. Already 23 years old, not much room for physical projection.

Delivery & Mechanics: Average athlete. Low-effort delivery. Three quarters arm slot; gets down mound well. Slight leg lift, followed by slight closing of front hip, somewhat rigid in motion, explosive more than smooth.

Fastball: 89-92 mph as a junior, Knack had a velocity spike as a senior; topped out at 97 during final season at East Tennessee State. Trackman data suggest plus vertical life on the fastball. Up to 19 inches of vertical break with some horizontal run. Fastball was down at the Alternative Site sitting more 91-94 mph. Grade: 55

Curveball: Curveball is inconsistent but has flashed huge raw spin (3000+ rpm). Improving spin efficiency to actualize raw spin into movement figures to be the development priority in pro ball; notably, that's an area in which the Dodgers have had success in recent years. Grade: 55

Slider: Flashed mid-80s breaking ball with two-plane shape. Used to miss bats and drive weak contact, some consider it Knack's best secondary weapon. Heavily used during the Alternative Site appearances. Gyro spin pitch with lower IVB and around eight inches of sweep. Grade: 50

Changeup: Shows some feel for creating arm-side fade on changeup. Sells it with arm speed, similar shape to his fastball with a 10 mph separation. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Has a history of throwing a high volume of strikes. Only issued 17 walks in 122 innings over two seasons at ETSU; just one walk in 25 innings as a senior. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Knack is one of the hardest players in the system to get a read on. Not extensively scouted at ETSU, he jumped onto the draft radar by putting up an absurd 51:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 25 innings as a senior. Along the way, his velocity spiked into the low-mid 90s and his pitch metrics demonstrated untapped potential on the curve. The reported data on Knack from the alternate training site were less inspiring: a 92-94 mph fastball with limited curveball usage. Teams are split on the reliability of that kind of data, though; Knack's four-month layoff between the college baseball shutdown and draft day would explain a temporary downtick in stuff regardless. At his best, he's shown a pair of above-average pitches, the ability to throw strikes, and promising pitch metrics that suggest the potential for more.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Lanky, athletic build. Strong, toned lower half. Still a little bit of room for added muscle mass in the shoulders.

Delivery & Mechanics: Average athlete. Long arm action. Generally on-line to home plate in delivery. Rotates throwing shoulder well before release; likely has high degree of hip-shoulder separation. Arm has a tendency to be a little late at foot strike, impacting his control. Exaggerated lean of front (left) shoulder at release, which enables a nearly perfect over-the-top arm angle.

Fastball: Averaged 93.9 mph, topped out at 96 during sophomore season at Texas Tech. Plus-plus life when located at the top of the zone; raw fastball spin is only slightly above-average but Beeter's highly vertical arm angle helps translate that spin into the appearance of ride. High efficiency offering with the 21+ inches of vertical break, boasting the metrics and feel of a double plus fastball. Grade: 70

Curveball: Averaged 82.3 mph, topped out at 86. Sharp 12-6 action. Tight break with plus spin. Incredibly high spin, 2800-3000 rpm banger, with heavy gyro spin. Elite velocity with -11 inches of drop. Downer curveball pairs well with riding fastball. Grade: 60

Changeup: Averaged 82.1 mph. Showed some feel for creating sinking action with a bit of arm-side fade. Clearly has less comfort locating the changeup than he does with either his fastball or curveball, which is reflected in his college usage pattern. Pitch has shown some potential but is clearly below-average right now. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Control over command pitcher. Much better throwing strikes as a draft-eligible sophomore (four walks in 21 innings) than as a freshman (20 walks in 20.2 innings). Decent enough athlete to sustain most of that progress, but highly vertical arm angle can prevent him from locating east and west. That's a necessary tradeoff for the hellacious action that arm slot helps impart on his fastball-curveball combination. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: It's really surprising Beeter fell to 66th overall in this June's class. He arguably had as good a two-pitch mix as anyone in the class, and there was some (ultimately unfounded) speculation the Dodgers might push him to the majors as a reliever for the stretch run, as the White Sox did with Garrett Crochet. Instead, he'll likely follow the traditional development path as a starter. The changeup and strike-throwing will dictate his ultimate future. Drafted as a redshirt sophomore, Beeter was limited to only logged 41.2 innings at Texas Tech because the COVID-19 shutdown ended his breakout 2020 season after just four starts. That makes minor-league reps extremely important, both for Beeter's development and continued evaluation of his ability to consistently throw strikes. His most likely role might be that of a five-inning starter whose fringy changeup keeps him from frequently turning over opposing lineups a third time. He's shown flashes of being more than that, but his lack of innings ultimately leaves a high-variance prospect.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3

RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Prototype innings-eater build; strong base; toned calves, tree trunk legs; thick lower half; well-built upper body; physically maxed out. Body will require maintenance long term but nothing substantial.

Delivery & Mechanics: Below-average athlete. Three quarters arm slot; arm stroke is inconsistent and delayed early in delivery; arm is nearly perpendicular to the ground at foot strike, limiting his ability to open up his front hip. Not much effort or head movement throughout delivery.

Fastball: Sat 90-93 mph, topping 94, in two-inning stints in most recent minor league action. Fastball has a flatter plane that works fairly effectively at the top of the zone. Has added significant velocity during 2020 Alternative Site performances, showed high efficiency movement with 19-20 inches of induced vertical break. Might be a bit of Dodgers player development magic but Pepiot's fastball is trending towards plus. Grade: 55

Curveball: 70-73 mph; a clear fourth pitch, used only to get early count called strikes. Very little feel for locating. Metrically it's a strong pitch getting 16 inches of drop and a high raw spin rate of 2800 rpm. Apparently the Dodgers have temporarily scrapped the pitch, but if a reworked version reappeared we wouldn't be shocked. Grade: 40

Slider: 82-84 mph; high spin efficiency offering mostly horizontal action; has enough lateral movement to stay off the barrel when located away from right-handed hitters; not enough depth to get many whiffs. This is typical of this style of slider, little to no IVB (<2) and around a foot of horizontal movement. His combination of above average velocity on the slider combined with his efficiency make it an average pitch. Grade: 50

Changeup: 82-84 mph; works straight downhill with plus drop; around 10 mph gap off the fastball; sells arm speed well to deceive hitters. Good run, matching the opposite horizontal break from Pepiot's slider. Doesn't shy away from deploying it against righties and lefties. Pepiot's best swing and miss offering. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Has difficulty throwing the fastball for strikes; struggles to finish out over his front side, leading to lack of consistency locating down or glove-side. Shows the ability to locate fastball and changeup with greater frequency than breaking balls. Significant development needed in this regard for Pepiot to max out his stuff. The largest concern in Pepiot's profile is his ability to throw strikes and hit his spots. Ultimately Pepiot's ceiling will be decided by his strike throwing. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Pepiot's probably a future reliever. He can finish hitters off with both his fastball and changeup, but he struggles to get into advantageous counts. Pepiot's below-average athleticism keeps him from consistently throwing strikes and establishing the glove-side corner. If the strike-throwing improves, he's got the repertoire of a mid-rotation starter. But walks have been a problem dating back to his time at Butler, and his lack of flexibility figures to be hard to overcome. That said, Pepiot has the stuff and the right organization behind him to turn the corner and utilize his fastball-changeup-slider mix to carve out a role as a good long term rotation piece.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-4

Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Long, lanky build; listed at 6'4", 200 pounds. Flat lower half; narrow frame and shoulders don't lend themselves to physical projection. Maxed out, but no maintenance concerns long term.

Hit: Closed stance with hands about level with shoulders. Quiet lower half in swing, toe tap; handsy swing. Remarkably quick to the ball despite long arms; hands work in tight, short circle with no wasted movement. Efficient swing path and plus bat speed enable him to handle high velocity on the inner half of the plate despite his size. Above-average bat control; capable of covering all quadrants of the zone. Fairly aggressive approach; solid strike zone awareness but swings at a high rate of pitches in the strike zone. Puts the ball in play and shows an advanced feel for using the entire field. Grade: 50

Power: Above-average raw power. Uphill attack angle is designed for elevated contact. Bat speed, swing plane and bat-to-ball skills all suggest above-average power upside. Current approach hinders in-game power output; Hoese's advanced feel for hitting enables him to put different pitches in play, but a more discerning approach early in counts could allow him to hunt pitches he can more effectively drive. Grade: 50

Field: Solid, instinctive hot corner defender with good hands. Fringy athlete who won't be the quickest or rangiest third baseman but has the ability to be a solid-average defender. Grade: 50

Arm: Showed solid-average arm strength in college. An elbow injury limited his playing time in the field in the minors in 2019, but reportedly demonstrated adequate arm strength at the alternate training site in 2020. Grade: 50

Run: Not the most graceful runner, but long strides enable him to cover decent ground when he's underway. Clocks average home-to-first times overall. Grade: 50

Overall: Hoese has average to above-average physical tools across the board. He had a monster redshirt junior season at Tulane in 2019 (.357/.456/.643) and figures to move through the minors quickly. He does everything well and looks a good bet to be a 2-3 win player annually. Hoese is comfortable in the batter's box, making him tough to strike out, and he already has the lofty attack angle typical of Dodgers hitters. He's clearly comfortable attacking pitches on the outer half and working gap-to-gap, but there could be some room for him to get a little more pull-oriented early in counts to tap into more home run power.
