Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, lanky build. Overall body strength. Long, loose arms. Long, tapering legs. Room to fill out, more strength with maturity.

Hit: Open stance, hands high at head, high back elbow. Body upright with wide base. Simple load, small leg kick with slight hand hitch. Quick bat speed. Uppercut, creates natural loft. Good lower half drive, torque. Makes hard contact. Pull side approach, shows ability to go up the middle. Length in swing at times, leads to swing and miss tendencies. Room to grow in approach. Struggles with elite spin and elevated fastballs, better against LHP. Grade: 40

Power: Plus raw power, above average game power. Ball jumps off the bat, run production type power. Obvious strength, generates good bat speed. Bat path and approach create good loft. Good lower half torque, drives ball to left center frequently. Added strength will give power boost. Grade: 55

Field: Solid defensive actions. Will make routine play. Athletic movements, good body control. Moves decent to both sides, size and speed slightly hinder range. Reliable hands. Has basic skills needed, flashes ability to make tough play. Grade: 50

Arm: Live, strong arm. Carries through the bag. Good throwing mechanics. On target when body control there, can get erratic when feet aren't under him. Good ball transfer, quick release. Prototypical 3B arm. Grade: 55

Run: Well below-average speed. Slow first step out of box. Long strides, heavy footed. Labors to run, not built for speed. Doesn't always hustle. Grade: 30

Overall: Vientos' size immediately stands out. He has a tall, lanky body with obvious room to develop more strength. His power potential is his carrying tool. Quick bat speed and flyball mentality has potential to do damage. He needs to improve his spin recognition and swing consistency. Transitioned from SS to 3B entering proball. Moves well for a guy his size with reliable hands that allow him to make the routine play. His above average arm profiles well at 3B. Could improve his accuracy slightly, but arm is very much playable at the position. A well below-average runner, do not expect much on the bases. Likely a platoon type player with the chance to rely on power and develop into an average everyday regular.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0

Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Overall: Ventura was another low budget signed from the 2017 class, and like Corniely, he's already had some success stateside. He lacks physicality, but still throws a low-90s fastball with one of the quicker arms you'll find. Both of his secondaries, a slider and a changeup project as at least future average offerings with his slider ahead of his changeup.

Overall: Corniely was signed out of Venezuela for a mere $25,000 as part of their 2017 class. He's popped some since, and has already had some success pitching stateside. Corniely is a big righty with a strong, durable frame. He's listed at 175 but already looks bigger than that. He has uncanny feel for a changeup for someone his age, and his command has a chance at being a potential plus trait down the line. Future backend starter with a chance for more with improved command and/or breaking ball development.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Overall: Hernandez was part of the Mets 2017 international class. He signed for $1.5 million. Hernandez packs a lot of power into his compact frame with a loud power tool and one of the quicker bats in the organization. A hamstring injury has limited him to just four games stateside and because of that he remains a bit of an unknown to our staff and contacts as none have seen him play personally to this point. He runs well enough to play center but isn't a strong defender in the outfield and is likely destined for left field. Needs to find a way to tap into that raw power and strength while making more contact. Long, uppercut swing will lead him vulnerable to the swing and miss, especially against high spin clubs.

Overall: Ramirez signed with the Mets out of the Dominican Republic for a shade over $2 million. He has a large, projectable frame with big power upside and the ability to stick in center. Ramirez has a long swing, and long limbs so he will be prone to swing and miss, but the ball jumps off his bat when he connects. Ramirez has a chance at five average or better tools, but the power will be the standout tool.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-8
Weight: 218 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Overall: Junior Santos is a massive human with a XXXL frame and still a teenager. In 2018, Santos signed for $275,000 as a 16-year old out of the DR and was so effective in the DSL that he earned a stateside promotion prior to turning 17. Despite pitching in the States in 2018 and 2019, there is almost no video of Junior which makes it very difficult to evaluate him. What we do know is that he has a top of the scale frame, a fastball that sits mid-90s, decent command for his size, and the Mets have been incredibly aggressive with his assignments -- at 17, he was nearly 4 years younger than the average Appy League pitcher in 2019. Being so big so young, it's likely that conditioning could be a factor throughout his career. It's tough to gauge Santos' ceiling without seeing his repertoire (he's reported to feature a slider and changeup) in games, but with his size, velocity, and the Mets' aggressiveness with him, there's a good chance he develops into a Major League reliever at the least.

Overall: Dominguez took a non-traditional route to the Mets, but the late blooming teenage arm might have the highest upside of any arm in the organization. The Venezulean teenager was already 18 years-old when the Mets signed him, and has already had a big velocity spike going from touching 94 to hitting 97, and now he can bump 99. He's gotten stronger since signing and also throws a big vertical curveball and a fringy change. At 6'5", 195, Dominguez has room to add good weight to the frame. He's a potential big arm that will play an important role on a pitching staff.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Martin

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: 6-foot-3, 210 pound frame. Lengthy, has some present muscle in his build. Still could fill out and gain additional strength. Decent athleticism, good considering size.

Hit: Starts in a slightly open stance, feet a little wider than shoulder width and hands near shoulder with bat tilting upwards. Starts swing with a medium leg lift and swings on an uppercut swing path. He typically pulls his ground balls and line drives while spraying his fly balls to all fields but typically opposite field. Sells out for power big time, rarely holding back. Swing-and-miss could be a problem if not improved before reaching the major leagues. Despite striking out a good amount, he has the ability to work a count and draw a walk as well. Three-true outcome player. His main problem in the contact department is that he sells out for power. His legs have an equal bend or lack of bend at the end of his swing, locking out both of his legs. His barrel is in and out of the zone pretty quickly because his legs simply turn instead of moving lower into contact. Very few contact points in the zone, but when he hits it he really hits it. He could hit for more contact, it will simply come down to making adjustments. His nearly 30% strikeout rate in the minor leagues will not play in the major leagues. An adjustment is necessary. Grade: 40

Power: Brett Baty can most likely put on a show during batting practice. He sells out for power and probably smokes batting practice pitching. As of now, it has not consistently transitioned into games. With a current 6-foot-3 and 210 pound frame, he could still very well put on strength and gain additional power. Even with his contactless swing, he could put that power into practice during games once he gets more experience. Has a lot of opposite field power. Struggles pretty badly against left handed pitching but smokes right handed pitching. Grade: 60

Field: Due to present athleticism in his build, Baty has pretty good footwork, solid hands, and average range. Probably an average third baseman. Could move to first base if athleticism decreases over time. Grade: 45

Arm: Baty's arm is above-average. Ball carries well across the diamond and he makes consistently accurate throws. During his senior showcase, he maxed an infield velo at 88 miles per hour. It could only improve from there after spending a season with the Mets. Grade: 50

Run: Baty does have present athleticism with his extra large build. He runs well for his size but is an average runner at best. Grade: 40

Overall: Loud potential plus power is the carrying tool, with a solid, near average defensive profile to help keep him in the lineup. Should the hit tool come to fruition, Baty should mature into a solid-average everyday regular.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 166 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, thin, broad shouldered with room to add significant good weight. A body type that can add 30-40 pounds of muscle without losing significant athleticism. Reminds me of Alfonso Soriano physically.

Hit: Switch hitter, similar setup for each side of the plate, open stance, sets weight onto back leg/hip; similar setup to Curtis Granderson. Slight leg lift trigger closes off his frontside before taking a long linear path to the ball. Aggressive swinger with above average bat to ball skills, but an unrefined approach. Swings at bad pitches and despite bat path still gets beat by fastballs elevated, leading to more pop ups than you'd like to see. Young enough that his contact skills and control of his levers should lead to at least average contact and on base skills Grade: 50

Power: Swing is geared toward line drives or going the opposite way and making plays with his legs. Best contact is hard liners to his pullside and even his home runs tend to lack hang time. Likely can get to fringe average game power at peak with strength gains and loft he seems to have added over the last year based on ATS data. Grade: 45

Field: Average defender at the shortstop position. Not the most rangy player but clean infield actions and good hands should allow him to stick in the infield. Ability and arm will translate at third base, even if the offensive profile may not. Stronger moving left than to his right. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm, with the ability to let loose some rocket throws from deep in the hole. Consistently on time and accurate, shows the ability to slow down and gather himself, rarely being forced into errant throws. Mauricio's best tool. Grade: 60

Run: Above-average runner down the line with below average instincts on the bases. Poor base stealer and lackadaisical at times. It's still an element of his game that works on shots down the line where his long strides and hustle can stretch some singles to doubles. Grade: 50

Overall: A heavily hyped young shortstop with a big bonus dollar attached. Mauricio isn't the star many believe him to be, but he is a solid all around player with tools that garner an everyday role. Unlikely to be a star, Maucuio will hit for a solid average with mid-teen power, possibly enough strength to eek out 20 or so in his best season. I think he falls more into the range of Dansby Swanson long term, than say a Xander Bogaerts. He has shown the ability to play an average shortstop and his strong arm makes up for his lack of range. Average everyday starter.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 3
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Ideal pitchers build; sturdy potential inning eater. XL frame: every bit of listed 6'3<94> 225 pounds. Broad shoulders that slightly slope; average upper body and core; high waist and long limbs. Lean, but strong lower half. Above-average athleticism. Impressive work ethic and leadership qualities. Minimal physical projection remains.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive operation. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Above-average deception from letter high leg kick and hand break; claws a bit behind the back during long arm path. Average stride; good extension. Frame and high arm slot generate a natural downward plane. Slight inverted-W on plant. Slight head whack; recoil after release yields occasional hard landings first-base side. Good rhythm. Easy, fluid and athletic motions that are repeated fairly well.

Fastball: Plus offering; high spin rate; sits 93-96 t98. Explodes out of the hand and gets on hitters quick; arm speed and deception pad perceived velocity. Features angle and modest life; occasional arm-side run; riding life when he climbs the ladder. Generates weak contact low and overpowering whiffs in and out of the zone. Solid average command. Grade: 60

Curveball: High spin rate power curveball; sits 79-83 with tight rotation,11/5 depth and sharp bite. Manipulates the movement occasionally showing more slurvy break with darting action and tilt. Backdoors the 11/5 hammer early in counts to steal strikes and buries it low as a spike pitch for swing and miss. Tough on LHB, absolute murder on RHB as a put-away offering. Exceptional feel; above-average command. Grade: 60

Changeup: Firm high-80s off-speed. Gaining feel; thrown with conviction while maintaining arm speed. Features late tumble and modest arm-side fade. Predominately utilized against LHB. Elicits moderate swing and miss and off-barrel weak contact. Offering has made significant gains with pro instruction; projects solid average. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Above-average control with potential solid average command. Shows advanced feel and pitchability. Polished strike thrower that fills the zone. Attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level to avoid predictable location; sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. FB consistently around the plate; can land or expand with CB and CH. Focused, competitive mound presence. CH maturation and increased usage is paramount to avoid predictable sequencing. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A surprise over-slot second day draftee in 2019, Allan has thrived developmentally under Mets tutelage. Blessed with size, composure and commanding presence, Allan's well rounded arsenal is anchored by an imposing plus FB/CB combo. Expect impact innings, strikeouts and leadership from this big right-hander. Overall there's frontline SP upside, with a solid mid-rotation role a more likely outcome.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Martin

Age: 19 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: 5-foot-11, 220 pound frame. Stocky, sturdy build. Thick and powerful legs. Extremely compact. Most likely done growing but at age 19, he could still add strength. Quick feet and more agile than he looks.

Hit: Starts with a really wide base and a slightly closed stance. Hands start near his back shoulder and move back towards the catcher while simultaneously using a toe-tap trigger. Swings with a mostly level but slightly uppercut swing path. His back knee moves down through contact while he slightly locks out his front leg and leans a little bit over the plate. Despite this, it is a compact swing. These swing mechanics create hard pull side and weak opposite field contact on line drives and ground balls. Front leg lockout generally creates more power with less contact points in the zone. Alvarez does a good job balancing a swing with power potential and more than an average amount of contact points. Has slightly above average bat-to-ball skills and plate discipline. His back knee working down through contact allows his bat to stay in the zone longer. This somewhat offsets his front leg lockout and upper half lean over the plate which causes the barrel time in the zone to shorten. Above-average offensive production from the catcher position. Grade: 55

Power: Alvarez has a stocky 5-foot-11, 220 pound frame that assists with his power production. Compact swing gives his bat some juice. More gap-to-gap power than home run power but can certainly run into some home runs. Given he is still only 19 years old, he could easily gain additional strength and turn those extra base hits into home runs. Generally more pull side power but has potential to put the ball over the right field fence. Alvarez has more speed than the average catcher, however, speed does not generally contribute to his extra base hits. Grade: 55

Field: Behind the dish, Alvarez has average receiving and blocking skills. Passable as a catcher right now, can only improve from this point forward given his age. Perfect stocky frame for a catcher with plus athleticism and time to improve. Grade: 50

Arm: Alvarez continually clocked pop times below two seconds. Throws were accurate and carried to the base. In 2019, he threw out nearly 30% of would be base stealers. Arm really plays behind the plate. Grade: 60

Run: Alvarez hustles out of the box and runs pretty well for a catcher. Given his frame and the fact that speed only decreases with age; do not look for Alvarez to be a future base stealer. Grade: 40

Overall: A high priority sign of the 2018-19 international class, the Mets inked then 17-year-old catcher Francisco Alvarez for $2.7 million. The Venezuelan native thrived in an an aggressive stateside assignment that saw him more than hold his own over three rookie league levels in 2019. Alvarez features a well rounded impact profile that boasts potential above-average hit and power, along with solid average production behind the dish and a plus arm.

Hits/Throws: L/R

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Well-built and physical frame, strength throughout with limited projection remaining and fringe-to-average athleticism.

Hit: The carrying tool, Hauver mashed his last two seasons at Arizona State and is well-regarded for his hit tool. He creates good leverage and employs a very good approach, with above-average bat speed and quality barrel control highlighting the tool. There's a good chance that he hits his way to the big leagues, though the projection here is not overly high end. Grade: 50

Power: Hauver's strength and above-average bat speed give him quality raw power, especially to the pullside, and he's shown the ability to get to that power in game given the consistency of his barrel accuracy and ability to work counts into his favor. Good upside exists here both in doubles and homers. Grade: 50

Field: Hauver was announced as a second baseman and played shortstop in high school, but played mostly corner outfield during his time at Arizona State, and left field is still the projection overall here, though some believe he can handle a corner infield spot enough to play there sporadically. His speed and arm likely limit him to left field or 2B/1B. Grade: 45

Arm: It's a fringe-average arm in terms of raw strength, with the playability of that tool dependent on where he's positioned defensively. He's best fit for left field or 2B/1B on the infield. Grade: 45

Run: Hauver is a decent athlete who moves solidly when underway and is speed and athletic enough to avoid being a baserunning liability, but his zero steals at Arizona State in his career and fringe-average times down the line limit the actual value his ability provides. Grade: 40

Overall: Bat-driven profile with big performance at Arizona State and the offensive upside of a major leaguer, though his defensive shortcomings likely limit him to something of a bat-first super utility role.

Physical Description: Ideal pitcher's build. Tall and sturdy. Broad shoulders; average upper body; soft middle; high waist; long levers. Power bottom; strong thick legs. Physically matured. Missed most of the 2018 season with blood clot issues in his pitching shoulder. Multiple undisclosed IL trips in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; drop and drive. High 3/4 arm slot, above-average arm speed with a max effort delivery. Violent, inconsistent mechanics; inverted w. Early hand break exposes ball behind the back; minimal deception from modest leg kick.

Fastball: Plus velocity with modest movement profile. Sits 93-95 t97; predominantly flat with mild tailing action. Control over command. Average offering that likely plays closer to above-average out of the bullpen where velo likely ticks up. Grade: 55

Curveball: Hard power curve. Sits 80-83 with tight rotation and deep 11/5 shape at its best. Arm slot wanders occasionally giving it unintentional slurvy depth. Shows the willingness and ability to throw it for strikes early in counts; best utilized as a spike chaser beneath the lower third. Legit put-away hammer when it's on. Occasionally flashes plus; realistic above-average potential. Grade: 55

Changeup: Low usage offering. Sits 86-88 lacking optimal velo separation. Firm tumbler; insufficient fade. Lacks feel and consistency; frequently neglects to maintain arm-speed, guiding it to the plate. Likely scrapped in a relief role. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Keeps the ball around the zone; elevated walks a product of chasing strikeouts and violent inconsistent mechanics. Predictable FB heavy sequencing early on, and CB for the strikeout. Most of these issues are likely mitigated when he's moved to the bullpen. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Otto's biggest obstacle is his health, he simply needs to prove he can stay on the field. The profile is much easier to palate with even modest command gains. His fastball and power curve are likely solid enough on their own to keep him in the conversation when filling out a bullpen. Overall there's modest role-40, low leverage or long reliever potential; with a more realistic outcome a role-30 high minors up and down depth arm.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Powder keg build at a touch under six feet, but looks heavier than his listed 185. Not a high level athlete but an explosive example of compact power. Broad shouldered with a slight amount of positive projection remaining. Body type looks likely to require maintenance long term.

Hit: Below-average hit tool with a combination of poor recognition skills and hyper-aggression in the box. Looks to elevate on every swing. This leads to his share of hard contact but also a high rate of swing and miss in and out of the zone. Will work deep into counts, certainly not devoid of all patience. Average on base skills. Mechanically there's a series of movements to stay synchronized and on time. Heavy load and high leg kick lengthen out trigger timing. A raw but promising bat that needs to smooth out his approach to hack it as a bat primary second baseman. Grade: 40

Power: Loud batting practice raw sending shots to all parts of the park. Setup conducive for loud airborne contact. Swings hard, every time he swings, with violent bat speed. Duran does not fully sell out for power as much as it's the defining mark in his game. Contact issues lends itself to the power playing down half a grade in game. An improvement in that area could push his power to plus territory. Grade: 55

Field: Below average fielder likely relegated to second base only. Infield actions are average with hands to stay at the position. Lacks a quick first step or the high level of range needed to be average or better at the position. With shifting and defensive positioning should be severicable at the position but will need to maintain current fitness level. Grade: 40

Arm: Fringe average arm that plays at second. Doesn't have the arm strength for the left side of the infield but accurate and strong enough to make throws in the turn. Grade: 45

Run: Below average runner at present that may tick down to poor at one point. Hustled out of the box in our observations playing up his home to first times. He's squarely a 40 runner that likely ticks down to 30 in the coming years. Grade: 40

Overall: Duran while an exciting take in-person presents a dangerous profile. An undersized bat first player relegated to second base only. To make matters worse, questions loom around his ability to make consistent contact against advanced arms. He'll turn 22 in May and is rule five eligible at the end of 2021. What Duran does in 2021 will weigh heavily on his future with the Yankees organization. Will he show improved poise at the plate and provide production worthy of a bat first designation at second? Or will he falter and end up another interesting name in the December Rule Five roster crunch.

It's a clean, direct stroke from the left side of the plate that handles velocity well and carries very good lag through the zone, with above-average bat speed, good plate coverage, and a quality approach strengthening the overall tool. Grade: 55

Power: Somewhat in spite of his smaller frame, Smith has solid-average raw power with the ability to loft the ball out pull-side and pepper the gaps to all fields. There's a good amount of extra base upside here along with potentially average home run power, but realistically he'll settle into the 12-15 HR range annually with plenty of doubles. Grade: 50

Field: Smith played a very solid shortstop for LSU and has the tools to potentially play there long term, though most evaluators feel that his best defensive home long term to be second base. His hands, feet, and athleticism all grade out above-average defensively, but he does not come with that explosive range or arm strength that high-level shortstops generally have. He should be a solid-to-above average second baseman. Grade: 55

Arm: It's solid-average raw arm strength that on the whole grades in the 50-55 range given the quickness of release, his internal timer, and the consistent accuracy he displays. This is likely something along the lines of a 45-50 tool from shortstop and a 50-55 tool from second base, so for the sake of projection we'll stick with a solid 5. Grade: 50

Run: Smith is a solid-average athlete who moves well regardless of where he is, but isn't explosively twitchy or a burner in the speed sense. He's clocked plus times down the line in the past but generally is a 50-55 runner whose speed plays up on the basepaths in part due to his excellent instincts, and he should be a double-digit stolen base threat. Grade: 50

Overall: Smith is a steady, high-floor college infielder who performed in the best amateur league in the sport with the bat and is a good bet to hit at the big league level. He's got the upside of a solid starter or very good bench player, who could conceivably play all over the infield in a super utility role. The bat and defensive steadiness should carry him and both help alleviate risk.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jason Kamlowsky

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Former two-way high school player with above average athleticism. Prototypical pitcher frame with projectable body. Tall and lean through his core. Lower half is still developing but he's worked to get bigger there. Carries his current body weight well. Has put on almost 30 pounds since his first year of JUCO ball.

Delivery & Mechanics: Command and control issues stem primarily from mechanical flaws through his release. While the delivery is repeatable, there is some effort here. Good balance point from the stretch but could stand to get lower through his delivery. 3/4 arm slot with some slight cross body action. Is too tall through his release and follow through. Finishes with a slight trail off to the first base side. To be more consistent, needs to work on driving down through his front side.

Fastball: Live arm. Ball jumps out of his hand. Sits consistently 92-95 but has touched 97. In a relief role it's easy to envision him sitting 95+. Can generate swings and misses due to some modest movement. Has tendency to miss spots leaving him vulnerable to hard contact. Control and command are both lacking, something that is a theme throughout his repertoire. Grade: 45

Curveball: 76-79 MPH that is more loopy than the slider. Inconsistent work in progress that he brought back into his arsenal in 2019. Thrown primarily to the outer half on righties and rarely used against lefties. More of a show me pitch than an effective one at this point. Grade: 40

Slider: 85-89 MPH with some 2-7 tilt. Sets up well off the fastball. Potential plus offering. Currently his best pitch and could be what allows him to flourish in a bullpen role. Can throw it for a strike early in the count. Uses it more against righties than lefties but comfortable throwing it in any count. Grade: 50

Changeup: 82-85 MPH but rarely used. Doesn't have enough confidence to throw it consistently. Will likely lag far behind other offerings throughout his career. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Command and control are below average right now. Can be effectively wild but is generally inconsistent throwing strikes. Will get hitters in an 0-2 hole and then fill up the count. Most of his control issues are self-inflicted due to mechanical issues in his delivery. Mound presence needs a lot of polish. Wears emotions on his sleeve and lacks poise. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Riley was seen as somewhat of a steal when the Braves got him in the 5th Round of the 2018 draft but control issues have plagued him early in his career. Appropriately nicknamed <93>Nuke<94> after Tim Robbins character in Bull Durham, Riley has an electric arm but has yet to harness it enough to be effective. He registered more walks (46) than strikeouts (41) in 2019 and had an unsightly 7.32 ERA. A complete overhaul of his mechanics might be a bridge too far, but some tweaks need to be made to help his command play. The fastball and slider combo boost his profile as a reliever and a full-time move to the bullpen is probably his best chance to make it to the big leagues. He does have some pedigree as his dad P.J. was drafted by the Astros in the 1989 draft but his mound presence and mechanics will need a lot of work in order for him to be a legitimate prospect.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 9
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Undersized for today's prototypical baseball prospect. Looks and plays like the usual high motor, utility player, scrapper. Team leader. Baseball bloodlines with both brother and father.

Hit: Solid hit tool, hit .453 in 61 games during 2019 JUCO season, then .252 during pro debut in the Appalachian League (52 games), the truth lies somewhere in the middle whereas the jump from JUCO to pro pitching takes some time for adjustment, wide base, slight crouch, hands up behind left ear, linear swing, controls the zone well, has a good eye, works the count and draws walks, when all is said it done a potential fringe-average hit tool is on the horizon. Grade: 45

Power: Linear swing not exactly geared for power, could tap in by adding a little loft to the swing but might cost some of the average, currently good for 5-10 bombs in full year of at bats. Grade: 30

Field: Versatile glove, was primarily a catcher at Cowley College but has played multiple positions in both the infield and outfield. Best profile is likely at 2B where the glove and range would play average to slightly above. Grade: 50

Arm: Enough arm to back up his versatile glove. Above-average, accurate arm with optimal carry and decent accuracy. Grade: 55

Run: A nuisance on the bases. Uses instincts and speed to run all over opponents. A perfect 30 for 30 in steal attempts during the 2019 JUCO season and 12 for 18 in his pro debut. Might take time to adjust to pro pitchers and catchers but steals and base-running are a big part of his game. Speed allows for defensive versatility noted above, run is plus asset. Grade: 60

Overall: The positive spark plug you want on your team. Controls the zone, draws walks, has a little pop. Causes distraction on the basepaths and has defensive versatility. Super utility depth player that every team needs to give others rest while moving all around the field and pinch running.

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 18
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Very strong and athletic build with even proportions. Broad shoulders and long levers. Not much physical projection remaining to his frame. Has added quite a bit of muscle since entering the Braves organization.

Hit: Wide stance, hands start around the ears and the operation is triggered with a very subtle leg kick. Smooth swing with loft to it. Does use all fields, primarily using the opposite field during his 2019 campaign. However, there is a legitimate concern for his strikeout rate, which sat at 32.9% in 2019. He does struggle against breaking balls and will need to refine his approach to improve contact. Backstrom fits the bill of a three true outcome hitter. Grade: 40

Power: Backstrom's power is his potential carrying tool. He is able to get great coil, which has led to tremendous bat speed and power from the left side of the plate. Exit velocities in high school reached as high as 109 MPH. Power does play to all fields, but primarily to the pull side. Contact issues prevent his power from being double plus. Grade: 60

Field: For his size, Backstrom is able to move well, but he will be limited to first base defensively. Showcases good footwork and agility, which have improved with the Braves. Will be interesting to see how his body progresses, but likely to be an average defender at first base. Grade: 50

Arm: Backstrom's arm is a below average asset. The highest recorded infield velocity in high school was 82 MPH. With added strength, could see a velocity increase. Grade: 40

Run: As mentioned before, Backstrom moves well for his size, showing off great athleticism. He registered a 6.90 60 in high school, which grades out to average. Grade: 50

Overall: Backstrom brings intriguing power to the plate, but the contact issues and strikeout rates limit the potential. He fits the definition of a three true outcome hitter. Being limited to first base defensively hampers him, but the athleticism for his size is helpful.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 235 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Filled out frame. Long limbs. Thick legs. Looks like most of his 235 frame comes from his lower half.

Delivery & Mechanics: Easy motion. 3/4 arm slot. Quick arm with consistency can create deception. Hands stay by his stomach for the break. Hands break as leg goes down. Lacks optimal extension. Finishes falling off to first base. Leg swings all the way across on finish to the point where his throwing shoulder is facing the plate. Quick tempo on the mound.

Fastball: Mixes 4-seam and sinker. 4-seam is 91-94 T95. Sinker and FB both average just over 92MPH. Generally uses a sinker that generates arm-side run. Can mix in a 4-seam, but not often. Not afraid to work this pitch to both sides of the plate. The pitch turns more hittable the higher it is in the zone. Grade: 45

Curveball: 79-82. 11 to 5 shape. Get's good depth on the pitch. Sharp and late bite to it. Uses this pitch to generate whiffs against RHH. Not afraid to use it early in the count, especially against LHH. Works it to both sides of the plate. Commands this pitch better than the FB. Grade: 50

Changeup: 86-87. Gets fade similar to the sinker. Almost only show to left handed hitters. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Lives around the zone and doesn't walk too many guys. When he misses with the fastball, he's got a tendency to do so over the middle of the plate. Shows a really good feel to command his breaking ball, but is not close to the same feel with his fastball. Can work to both sides of the plate with both pitches. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Walker was hurt for the 2020 season, but already debuted in 2019. It's clear the Braves see him as a reliever. He's likely an up and down bullpen depth piece, mostly due to his stuff. While the curveball is clearly his best pitch, and is good enough to consistently get big league hitters out, it isn't strong enough to stand on its own. His fastball/sinker combo is what gets the bulk of use for him and neither pitch is good enough to have him succeed in high leverage situations, but it can play serviceable enough to play off the breaking ball for an inning. Improved command, or a bump to his fastball would are the keys to a bigger bullpen role.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Short, stocky build; mild slope to broad shoulders with a long torso, long limbs; barrel chest and sturdy thick lower half. Thick body that will need to be maintained; physically maxed out.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only; drop and drive; tilts to clear arm through extremely fast and powerful arm stroke. High 3/4 arm slot with high effort delivery. High leg kick; long stride with impressive extension. Inconsistent mechanics: timing and explosion towards plate varies; arm-slot wanders. Foot strike flexed and extremely stiff at times. Falls hard first base side.

Fastball: Pumps consistent double-plus velocity, sitting 95-97 t99. Shows late arm-side run and riding life; heavy sink when it's pounded in the lower third of the zone. Has control; offering has below-average command. Generates weak contact low and overpowering whiffs in and out of the zone. Misses are predominantly glove side and low. Grade: 60

Slider: Inconsistent; lacks feel. Sits 86-90. Firm short horizontal cutter action around 89-90. Occasionally shows a more optimal sharpness with tilt and bite around 86-87 mph. Swing and miss is predominantly chase pitches out of the zone. Struggles with control, heavy usage out of the zone glove side; greater feel and tightened break can push the offering to average; without it's fringy at best. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Inconsistent mechanics limit control and command. Relies on velocity to bail out lack of command. Predictable sequencing, leans on the heat early and often; mixes in SL only when ahead as a chaser. Standard power reliever control over command profile. Struggles to limit walks; lacks consistency locating off-speed offerings in zone. Flashes feel for off-speed offerings but consistency wavers; fastball can be scattershot Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Significant gains with mechanics, command and improved consistency in the slider are necessary for me to squint and see a productive big league future. There's modest role 40 reliever potential should some of that come to fruition. A more realistic future is a decent role-30, high minors depth arm - a solid lotto ticket given the upside of his velocity and mound presence.
