Jan 2021 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: Powder keg build at a touch under six feet, but looks heavier than his listed 185. Not a high level athlete but an explosive example of compact power. Broad shouldered with a slight amount of positive projection remaining. Body type looks likely to require maintenance long term.
Hit: Below-average hit tool with a combination of poor recognition skills and hyper-aggression in the box. Looks to elevate on every swing. This leads to his share of hard contact but also a high rate of swing and miss in and out of the zone. Will work deep into counts, certainly not devoid of all patience. Average on base skills. Mechanically there's a series of movements to stay synchronized and on time. Heavy load and high leg kick lengthen out trigger timing. A raw but promising bat that needs to smooth out his approach to hack it as a bat primary second baseman. Grade: 40
Power: Loud batting practice raw sending shots to all parts of the park. Setup conducive for loud airborne contact. Swings hard, every time he swings, with violent bat speed. Duran does not fully sell out for power as much as it's the defining mark in his game. Contact issues lends itself to the power playing down half a grade in game. An improvement in that area could push his power to plus territory. Grade: 55
Field: Below average fielder likely relegated to second base only. Infield actions are average with hands to stay at the position. Lacks a quick first step or the high level of range needed to be average or better at the position. With shifting and defensive positioning should be severicable at the position but will need to maintain current fitness level. Grade: 40
Arm: Fringe average arm that plays at second. Doesn't have the arm strength for the left side of the infield but accurate and strong enough to make throws in the turn. Grade: 45
Run: Below average runner at present that may tick down to poor at one point. Hustled out of the box in our observations playing up his home to first times. He's squarely a 40 runner that likely ticks down to 30 in the coming years. Grade: 40
Overall: Duran while an exciting take in-person presents a dangerous profile. An undersized bat first player relegated to second base only. To make matters worse, questions loom around his ability to make consistent contact against advanced arms. He'll turn 22 in May and is rule five eligible at the end of 2021. What Duran does in 2021 will weigh heavily on his future with the Yankees organization. Will he show improved poise at the plate and provide production worthy of a bat first designation at second? Or will he falter and end up another interesting name in the December Rule Five roster crunch.
