Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Signed as a slender kid with plenty of projection. Beginning to fill out and add muscle. Long levers. Twitchy. Plays with a smile on his face.

Hit: Slightly crouched and open stance from the left side. Keeps the bat out in front prior to loading. Some pre-pitch bat movement. Moderate leg kick as he closes and steps into the pitch. Appears to be still seeking a comfortable swing from the left side and has gone through several iterations. More traditional, balanced swing from the right side. Slightly crouched and open stance. Keeps his hands high and behind his head. Some pre-pitch hand and bat movement as he tries to find his rhythm in the box. Mostly linear swing from both sides, but inconsistently so from the left side. Above-average bat speed from both sides. Balls jumps off the bat with good contact, but puts too many balls on the ground. Can beat out grounders to the left side. Often overly aggressive; takes big cuts and swings too often, which leads to too many strikeouts. Struggles with velocity up and away and is too often behind the pitch. Shows an understanding of the zone and takes his fair share of walks. Has good enough bat-to-ball skills to foul off a lot of pitches. Needs to find a comfortable, repeatable stance from the left side and cut down on his aggressiveness. Possesses some of the underlying abilities to see growth with the tool, but it will require additional patience as he moves up the ladder. Grade: 45

Power: Average raw power with room to grow as he continues to add strength and find his swing. Mostly a present gap hitter, but has flashed over-the-fence power in his two years in the minors. His home runs have exclusively come from the left-side and have been to all fields. Has a quick bat and already creates good leverage. Show some natural lift off the bat. Grade: 45

Field: Quick out of his breaks. Can improve with his routes, but is fast enough to overcome it. Willing to lay out for the ball. Overall shows above-average range in the grass. Makes some difficult plays. Plays with some flair. Can be an above-average or better fielder in CF or RF. Grade: 55

Arm: Strong arm with significant carry. High release point. Throws were on a rope and on target in limited looks. Plays in RF. Grade: 60

Run: A plus runner out of the box that is capable of turning a double into a triple. Fast enough to keep the pitcher honest once on, but has yet to become a base stealer in his short career. Shows some awareness on the basepaths. Grade: 60

Overall: Knowles is a tool shed and is already showing three above-average or better tools. He won't be a quick mover, but he's a high aptitude kid and has so far shown enough of an understanding of the zone and flashed the bat-to-ball skills to suggest he can develop with time. It's an enticing package, one that could eventually impact a lineup, but his bat is what will need to get him there. Without that, he's a likely defensive replacement/depth piece.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Danny Brackman

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big frame with high waist, thick legs, and broad shoulders. Has grown considerably since being drafted. Needs to be careful adding much more weight but current size combined with underlying athletic capabilities are highly intriguing.

Hitter Tools:

Hit: Wide stance with hips opening early to generate lots of torque and bat-speed. Tendency to pull his head causes swing and miss, though athleticism does bail him out at times. Somewhat tense at the plate and can rush through lever mechanisms, leading to some ugly swings. Big strides forward have been made and reportedly continued at the ATS and fall instructs.Grade:45

Power: Inconsistent bat-path has led to less than expected power from someone of Holmes' size and athletic ability. With the continued tinkering of swing mechanics, there's a chance he unlocked something substantial, though for now, his recorded exit velocities leave much to be desired (Avg. 81 EV Max 101 EV according to Fangraphs). Rotational ability indicates there is still some potential there. Grade: 40

Field: Athleticism, foot speed, and arm strength indicate above average potential in an outfield corner, but the Angels' plans on continuing his development as a 2-way indicate he likely won't spend much time in the field, if any at all. So far, he's only entered the lineup as a DH when not pitching, likely to limit physical workload. Could be at least an average defender, however current defensive development is stifled. Grade: 45

Arm: Above-average arm strength with very good carry and accuracy. Ability to make any throw from all three outfield positions. Grade: 60

Run: Very good foot speed for someone of his size. Career 7 of 8 stealing bases in 41 minor league games between 2018-19. Long strides cover lots of ground after an explosive first step. Could lose some running ability as his body continues to grow as he ages, though for now that doesn't appear to be a concern. Grade: 55

Pitcher Tools:

Mechanics: Has switched to a hybrid wind-up since going pro to help repeatability. Often inconsistent timing and tempo in the delivery leads to pitches spraying around the zone. Effective hip hinge utilizes his strong lower half well. Fluid arm action; high 3/4 slot; good upper half mobility, and size/athleticism indicate solid durability. Continuing to feel out and get comfortable with his mechanics as his body finishes developing is key.

Fastball: Sits in the low 90s and can reach back for 95-96. Inconsistent delivery reflected by inconsistent velo at times. Throws both a 2-seam and 4-seam. Good arm-side run on the 2-seam used for inducing weaker contact. Spin rates north of 2400, nearly perfect spin efficiency, a straight-over-the-top axis, and good extension make the 4-seam play even when velo is down. Raw metrics are well above average, so a velo spike could be huge. Grade: 55

Curveball: Mid-high 70s slurvy bender. Not overly sharp but total horizontal+vertical movement is still solid. Plays nicely when thrown to the glove side. Doesn't throw it a ton as he favors the FB/CH more, though it still appears to be a solid third offering. Either embracing the slurve and increasing spin efficiency a bit or converting to a true slider and increasing gyro degree could improve pitch ceiling. Grade: 50

Changeup: Low 80s 2-seam grip with fantastic seam-shifted wake. Heavy arm-side fade and downward sink make the pitch a true swing-and-miss offering. Highly effective against both LHH and RHH. Advanced feel at a young age for what is often considered to be the hardest pitch to develop. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Impressive strikeout rates somewhat negated by ugly walk rates. Tendency to be effectively wild. Each pitch has a unique movement profile and will take time to harness. His stuff is good enough to get outs simply by throwing near the zone, as he has done so far, but continued improvement in the command department will determine Holmes' future as either a starter or a reliever. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: A legitimate 2-way prospect, Holmes brings some exciting untapped potential to both the plate and the mound. Reports on his development and work ethic are continuing to trend in the positive direction. There are gaps that need to be filled in rather quickly, and there's a good chance Holmes stops hitting to focus on pitching, but that isn't happening just yet.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 18 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 3
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Below average height, sloped shoulders, athletic high waisted build, room to add 25-30 pounds of good weight in the coming years.

Hit: Square to pitcher, hands set by back shoulder, moderate leg lift timing mechanism gives way to rock back. Level bat plane and path. Longer swing, but has shortened up over the last 18 months. Best struck balls are line drives up the middle, has shown the ability to go the other way and make plays with his at least above-average running. Should provide a solid approach, contact, and grind out at bats. Average hit tool, but improvements in on base ability and power could push the grade up. Grade: 50

Power: Lacks significant loft, lift, or strength to drive the ball with authority in the air. Does have the clean mechanics and barrel control to potentially meliorate his power in game. At the moment it's a below average tool, that mostly manifests itself in the way of gap shots and doubles off the wall. Grade: 40

Field: Above average outfield defender with skills that translate in centerfield. Likely a long term up the middle defender in the fringes of plus defense. Shows the necessary giddy up on balls coming in and going back, takes efficient routes and has the twitch needed to excel at the position. Grade: 55

Arm: Good on-line carry, to all bases in my looks. Not elite velocity (topped out at 87 mph from the outfield), but it's a strong accurate arm with distance and a quick trigger. His arm should be an asset for him in center and should allow him to handle right field. Grade: 55

Run: Above average runner that clocked some plus times later on in the process. Ran a 6.9 60 in my looks, with 55 grade home to first. There's a chance that he added the speed for it to play up to plus or better. Ran a 6.5 in January of 2020. Does an excellent job of closing in on balls in front of him in the outfield. Base running ability, good jumps, and pitcher reads at first. Grade: 55

Overall: One of the top Canadian players in the 2020 draft class, Calabrese provides a strong foundation of skills and a projectable frame that should add more weight. It's a hit over power profile at the plate but there's a chance his strong barrel control allows him to translate mechanical changes and added strength into more power at maturation. For now it's a fourth outfielder profile with a strong up the middle home defensively and a solid floor at the plate. A chance to push into an everyday role should the skills tick up at the plate.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA, HOU
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall skinny build, long arms and legs, square shoulders, high waist. Looks listed height and weight with additional projection remaining throughout the frame.

Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive. Over the top slot, above average arm speed, and high effort in the delivery. Moderate leg lift, late handbrake, falls off to first base side. Classic stretch move, no ramp, slot drops a little.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 mph, ramping up to 96-97 mph. Holds velocity second time through the lineup dropping to 92-94 mph, still reaching for 95 when needed. Four-seam, heavy ride, plays best elevated. Ability to create downhill plane due to height and release point. Limited armside run, misses mostly gloveside and elevated in the zone, rarely throws to the heart of the plate. Generates swings and misses overpowering hitters with velocity and movement. Near plus pitch with improved command, above average in current state. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sits 82-84 mph, with loopy 12-6 break, and below average vertical drop. Go-to secondary first time through the order, generates swings and misses and groundball contact. Controls the pitch at an average level, showing the ability to land it for strikes. Command is below average struggles to hit the mit, will hang one out of five. Fringe average, good velocity for a curveball that could trend to average with improved command. Grade: 45

Splitter: Sits 85-88 mph, classic splitter, thrown with conviction, swing and miss pitch, with primary function to drive chase swings. Rarely thrown for a strike, mostly thrown glove side, with late dynamic tumble that fools righties and lefties alike. Limited function due to inability to land in the bottom of the zone with consistency. Average splitter. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Fringe average control, capable strike thrower, with varied command across offerings. Fastball command best of the three offerings, showing the ability to hit his spots in the lower quadrants, and elevated armside. Curveball and splitter command are below average, will lose the ability to land either for consistent strikes for stretches. Control: 40 | Command:40

Overall: A rule five draft pick out of the Astros system, Rivera has the profile of a minor league starter that will soon transition to a multi-inning or low leverage pen role, with the stuff to pitch his way into high leverage work. Below average command due to the effort in his motion. Fringe strike thrower, that lives around the zone but rarely in it. Plus velocity on all three pitches, with the ability for his arsenal to play up across multiple innings. Should see multi-inning clean-up work if he sticks on the Angels active roster.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Signed as a tall, projectable prospect that was lean throughout. Long levers. Beginning to fill out and add strength. A good athlete. May grow into a 3B.

Hit: Crouched and balanced stance from the right side. Slightly open. Knees inward. Keeps his hands high by his right ear. Moderate amount of bat movement/body sway prior to loading. Moderate leg kick as he steps into the pitch. Repeatable swing that is mostly linear. Near-mirror image swing from the left side, but is less fluid in his actions and has more effort. Looks more comfortable from the right, but produces above-average bat speed from both sides during BP. Shows good rotation in his hips, but footwork in the box could improve, namely from the left side. Lacks barrel control from the left side and looked awkward in the box against live pitching during showcases and instructs. Has strong hand-eye coordination that allows him to foul off a lot of pitches, but the bat speed wavers and he has trouble catching up to velocity. Aggressive at the plate and presently lacks in his approach, which is unsurprising given his age. Has a feel for bunting. Shows enough raw ability, most notably with his hand-eye coordination, to suggest he can improve over time, but he'll need to continue to fill out and put in the work to improve his barrel control and pitch recognition. Tool could be average in time. Grade: 45

Power: Below-average present raw power with room to grow. Swing creates natural lift, and the ball jumps off the bat during BP. Presently lacks the strength to impact the ball upon contact against live-pitching. Approach is not yet geared toward driving the ball, but did show some gap power from the right-side of the plate during showcases. Left side lags behind. Had significant physical projection when he signed and is now flashing the underlying ability to indicate his power could approach average or better at full maturity. Grade: 45

Field: Moves well laterally and keeps his feet moving. Fluid actions. Not especially quick, but gets a good initial step toward the ball. Keeps it in front of him and stays low on it. Charges the ball with authority. Strong hand-eye coordination; follows the ball and can make the play off a bad hop. Displays a good backhand going to his right. Above-average range that allows him to make the routine plays and some of the more difficult ones. Shows good instincts in the field. Plays with some flair. Has the tools to stick at SS, but might fit best at 3B if he fills out. Grade: 55

Arm: Average arm strength with average carry across the diamond. Arm strength may improve as he fills out. Quick transfers. Shows several release points, including a low-sidearm/submarine when he's trying to get the ball out quick. Typically side-arm, but will go low-3/4 if he needs to add something to it. Throws on-target in looks to both 1B and 2B. Arms plays up because of his ability to get the ball out. Would play at 3B. Grade: 55

Run: Showed average times during showcases as an amateur, but may slow as he fills out. A heads up runner once he's on base, but will not be a true threat to steal. Grade: 50

Overall: Vera's glove is ahead of his bat. He has innate hand-eye coordination which gives hope to his future hit tool, but he is very raw at the plate and much of his upside depends on his ability to add strength. He's begun to do so. There's a reason to believe he could be an average hitter with average power as he physically matures, but it's going to take time. His defense is advanced and helps give him a reasonable floor, but he'll ultimately go as far as his bat takes him. He has everyday potential.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height, skinny, athletic high waisted build, with room to add significant good weight in the years to come. Should maintain high level of conditioning.

Hit: Sets up square, significant knee bend, with significant waist bend, hands set by shoulder, with bat set perpendicular over his back shoulder. Stays compact with a steep bat path to the ball that opens up holes in his swing on anything elevated. Murders low balls, but will swing through plenty of pitches in zone due to path. Passive approach, will get deep into counts but takes too many looking third strikes. Grade: 40

Power: Easy above average power, drives the ball to all fields with relative easy. Steep bay angle allows him to backspin balls with good carry to the deepest parts of the park. Slight in frame but generates hellacious bat speed. Should add good weight and develop into potential plus game power at peak. Grade: 55

Field: Fringe average tool, quick first step, but robotic actions in the field. Sure-Handed and displayed soft hands. Limited range, but will layout to his left. Slow on the pivot at times. Likely to slide to third base or second base long term due to lack of range and technicality at the position. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm with a quick release. Good strength and accuracy on throws deep in the hole. Has the arm strength to beat out fast runners on bang bang plays. Plenty of arm should he slide to third base long term. Grade: 55

Run: Clocks above average home to first times, and shows twitch in the field, particularly coming inside on slow rollers. Not an aggressive base stealer but is capable of going from home to third standing on a ball in the gap. Likely to slide back to average straight line speed as he ages. Grade: 50

Overall: A bat-first power hitting shortstop likely to stick in the dirt. Jackson is unlikely to ever carry a high batting average or on base percentage, and his zone miss is a red flag. His power however plays in game already and looks like he could grow into plus game in a matter of years. This coupled with his athleticism and defensive skills to stick in the dirt give him a strong foundation to build from. It's a second division regular profile at peak with upside if the hit tool progresses to average.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft, Round 4
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Medium build; fit and trim with sloping shoulders, long, lanky arms; high waist with long legs. Modest projection remaining throughout; likely to settle in around 200 lbs. Injury history includes a stress reaction of the back in 2018 and a stress fracture of the lower spine in 2019.

Mechanics: Fires from a high 3/4 arm slot with high effort; hand break, arm action, and subtle head whack yield moderate deception. Works primarily from the first base side of the rubber, quick motion with a high leg kick. Repeats delivery well; needs work at holding runners from the stretch.

Fastball: 94-96; four-seamer and sinker in the same velocity band. Four seam features arm side, riding life in the zone with inconsistent command; tends to miss high arm side. Sinker features tailing, darting life in the zone; induces weak contact consistently and shows average command. Overall, a plus offering with little projection necessary to reach its potential. Grade: 60

Cutter: 88-90 t91 with run in on opposite-sided batters; compliments the fastball well; hitters struggle to square it up. Most effective in the upper third; movement overlaps slider on occasion. Swings and misses rare but contact is limited. Overall an average offering at the highest levels. Grade: 50

Curveball: 81-84; flashes plus but sits fringe-average. Tight rotation, 11/5 action with inconsistent command; tends to bounce it at times; lacks teeth necessary to generate consistent swings and misses. Self-awareness evident in usage with the offering; mixes in for a called strike early in counts or thrown to freeze hitters after a fastball-heavy sequence. Grade: 45

Slider: 86-88 with sharp bite running out of the zone. Primary secondary offering; consistently generates swings and misses from same-sided batters. Command is inconsistent; misses tend to be horizontal. Most effective to the outer third of same-sided batters. Shape lacks bite at times, but overall an above-average offering. Grade: 55

Changeup: 88-90; struggles to command and generate swings and misses; same velocity band as cutter and slider may be hindering overall effectiveness; squeezes on occasion, burying the pitch in the dirt. Lacks conviction and purpose, overall a below-average offering. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average control with below average command; sinker/slider combination is sequenced effectively with cutter mixed in. Four-seamer, curve, and change lag, but fills the zone enough to potentially stick in a rotation long-term. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Two separate back injuries have forced Rodriguez into a true wildcard scenario; when healthy, he has three average-or-better offerings to help navigate a lineup. Assuming health, a back-end starter role is likely. But due to the durability concerns and the rigors that come with a 162-game schedule, a long relief or spot-starter role becomes most likely long-term.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11

Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Shorter lefthander with a strong, muscular, but stout build. Near maxed out, with a strong lower half with defunded thigh and glute muscles. Shorter arms and legs.

Mechanics: Very unusual operation with a high level of deception. A low side arm slot that crossfires across his body. Yan starts set in the third base side of the rubber. The motion begins from a slight side step to elevated leg lift, that forces his front side closed, before dropping down his slot and flinging it across his chest.

Fastball: Above average velocity with heavy horizontal break that makes the pitch play almost like a hard sweepy slider. His velocity fluctuated greatly early in the year ranging from 89-93 mph. By June Yan's fastball was sitting 93-95 mph with the same nasty sweeping movement. He uses the pitch almost like an out pitch, going to breaking balls and changeups early before ripping off heaters that land gloveside. At times it seems as though he has little to no idea where the pitch will land once it releases his hand, but it's around zone consistently and his misses tend not to be center cut meatballs. The lack of true command for the pitch offsets some of the offering's plus movement characteristics. Grade: 55

Slider: Mid to upper-70s offering with less sweep and more vertical drop. The pitch plays up due to the vertical movement coming from his horizontal slot, which gives it the appearance of moving horizontally before bottoming out. His usage of the pitch waned as the 2019 season progressed, and he became increasingly split heavy with usage, really only leaning on it in left in left matchups. Advanced command of the pitch, landed it for a better than 60% strike rate across three observations. He gets a fair amount of takes on the pitches leading to less swings than his fastball or offspeed. Fringe average pitch, that I'd like to see how it fairs versus more advanced hitters before moving this grade to average or below. Grade: 45

Changeup: Arguably the best pitch in Yan's arsenal. Heavy usage versus both righties and lefties, but make no mistake this pitch drives his high level of success versus right handed hitters (.171/.289/.250 across 347 PAs). Averaging 82-87 mph depending on how much sauce he puts on it. It shows some run but a ton of tumble, falling off a table similar to his breaking ball, but due to the increased velocity it's often mistaken for his fastball. Yan's best swing and miss pitch consistently, even as his fastball ticked up after the first month of the season. An above average offering on par with his fastball. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Yan's profile presents an interesting one. As the command and control profiles for his fastball and braking ball are flipped. He shows good feel for commanding his breaking ball landing it for strikes a majority of the time. His fastball while fringe average control has poor command as he often makes his catcher work harder on his fastballs than his secondaries. Factor in the changeup and you start to raise the grade, as Yan's offspeed feel is the core of his 2019 and any future he has as a starter. At the end of the day it's fringe average command with below average command. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Yan gives off heavy Cristian Javier vibes, albeit left handed from a different slot entirely. The similarities draw from the changeup and breaking ball feel, the willingness to double and triple down on the changeup and sneak 94-95 mph by you. He'll take something off his fastball one pitch and ramp it up another. It's never a comfortable at bat and it's a profile that can work in a variety of roles. Yan has a shot to stick as a starter as long as his secondaries continue to play versus better competition and he throws enough strikes. There's swing and miss, the ability to drive lots of groundball contact and raw stuff. If his opportunities to start dry up in the coming years Yan could transition easily into a high leverage role as early as 2022. One of the better prospects in the Angels system.

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Above-average height. Long levers. Strong hands. Has added good weight to his frame since signing, including upper body strength. He's retained his athleticism despite the added weight.

Hit: Slightly crouched and balanced stance. Hands stay high and back. Some pre-pitch bat movement. Keeps his weight on his back foot as he loads and transfers into his swing. Moderate leg kick. Linear swing that produces a lot of line drive contact. Shows plus bat speed during BP but would need to sacrifice some of his contact ability to get to it in-game. Has an understanding of the zone and shows an ability to lay off bad pitches. Timing on his swing is sometimes off, leading to parts of his body being out of sync and him being behind the pitch; growth with his pitch recognition will help. The current profile will come with his share of strikeouts. Grade: 45

Power: Average raw power with room to grow. The ball jumps off his bat during BP and his swing is designed to drive the ball to the gaps. Those balls will clear the fence as he continues to physically mature and create more leverage. Grade: 50

Field: Stays low and keeps the ball in front of him. Displays good footwork and an ability to get to difficult balls. Moves well laterally and can cover a lot of ground to his left. Shows a good backhand moving to his right. Above-average range. Physical maturation may move him off SS, but the eventual package will play at 3B. Has some recent experience with 2B, too. Grade: 55

Arm: Strong arm with plus carry across the diamond. High release point. Mostly accurate in looks from the amateur circuit, but the ball has a slight tendency to sail when throwing to 1B. Arm fits on the left side of the infield. Grade: 60

Run: Clocked above-average times in the 60 as an amateur. No recent looks. Grade: 55

Overall: Paris' profile has changed slightly since signing in 2019 largely due to his added strength and burgeoning power. Paris received positive reports from instructs, and there may be additional untapped potential with the stick. While it's a profile that doesn't necessarily lend itself to being a quick mover, the ultimate upside is that of a regular or more. He'll need to work to get there.

Physical Description: Adams is lean, but strong and looks like a Division I wide receiver. Broad shoulders, large neck. Explosive hips and bottom half. The ideal body. An elite athlete, the type of kid that excels in any sport you drop him into.

Hit: He's reworked the swing since his high school days, quieting down that massive leg kick for a more controlled version. He raised his back elbow a bit while also constructing a bat path made for generating natural loft and getting into his power. He starts with his hands high, and stance slightly opened and bent at the knee. The swing is relatively long, two different loading mechanisms are present, I would like to see him eliminate the second one and reduce the length to the stroke. Lightning quick bat speed. Good batting eye, but can struggle against breaking balls. He's a tough player to evaluate because he's just starting the first time in his life where he's solely focused on one sport, and some of the inexperience in relation to his peers shows but he powers through it because of his athletic prowess. Grade: 40

Power: Adams has strong hands and wrists and has above-average raw power right now. His 50% ground ball rate doesn't allow him to fully tap into all of his power yet, and his swing is a bit flatter than you would like, but that has supposedly been a point of emphasis for him during the shutdown. Right now he can hammer balls to his pull side and will work the gap the opposite way. His speed will always turn singles into doubles and double into triples. Power could eventually be plus with time, but we aren't there yet. Grade: 45

Field: Elite athleticism allows him to chew up turf in the outfield and he gets to many balls that other centerfielders simply can't. He gets gap to gap with ease and is an aggressive outfielder. He's also mistake prone and will have lapses of concentration on some of the most routine balls. I typically don't pay attention to defensive stats but they help prove my point here. Adams had ten errors in centerfield in the Midwest League and that's far too many. The ingredients are here to be a potential plus fielder, but he needs to work on the finer points of his game first. Grade: 45

Arm: Adams has a strong arm. The type of arm that will allow him to settle in at any outfield position. Strong and accurate, he also displays good footwork and has a quick release. Grade: 55

Run: Adams is an 80-grade runner. Was getting plus run times on him after he broke it down two-thirds of the way down the line. He needs more polish on the basepaths to be a true stolen base threat, but you need to know exactly where he is when he's on base. Grade: 80

Overall: There's a strong chance Jordyn Adams is THE best athlete in all of affiliated baseball. Adams was a three sport star in high school, and even had a scholarship to the University of North Carolina to play both football and baseball. The Angels were interested and drafted him in the first round, and paid him a healthy overslot $4.1 million bonus. Adams is still growing into his baseball body, but the tools shine through. There's a chance he settles in as a plus hit, plus power 80-grade runner with plus defensive skills. It could happen because of his athleticism and as his inexperience fades away. Putting him as a present role 50, but that could easily jump up to a 60 if his offensive skills continue to develop.

Physical Description: Compact, sturdy build with more developed thick upper body. Wide shoulders with a broad chest. Thicker neck. Moderate athleticism but displays excellent body control and balance. Completely physically matured.

Mechanics: Short and easy arm action. Moderate leg kick and moderate stride down the mound. Little to moderate effort in the delivery from an over-the-top motion. No concerns for durability or longevity.

Fastball: Low-90s offering with some ride and, at times, arm-side run. Likes to morph into a cutter-esque offering against lefties. Likes to spot the fastball at the top of the zone to compliment his secondaries. Heater plays up due to excellent command of the pitch. Shows a great feel for commanding the fastball arm-side and glove-side. Physical maturity and lack or arm speed suggests he's likely reached his peak velo. Grade: 50

Curveball: Low-70s 12-6 bender that he controls extraordinarily well. Command for the pitch is mature beyond his age. Likes to pitch backwards because of it. Showcases fantastic depth and some sweep at times. Can get a loopy when left up in the zone. Will need to really focus on spotting this pitch right below the knees. Very good reason to believe he's capable. Lack of velo may be a concern at the highest levels. Grade: 60

Changeup: Sparsely used at Louisville, Detmers hasn't needed to utilize his offspeed offering much. When shown, Detmers has showcased the ability to kill spin and command the pitch arm-side. Will be absolutely essential the pitch become a staple of his arsenal if the fastball/curveball combo is to reach it's ceiling. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Ability to throw strikes and pitch backwards is apparent. Might have plus command with the curveball and above average command with the fastball. Changeup command is at least fringe average. Strike-thrower. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Detmers has all the makings of a potential mid-rotation arm thanks to his ability to avoid self-inflicted damage and throw quality strikes. Right now, he's primarily a fastball/curveball pitcher. That will need to expand if he's to reach his ceiling. Clayton Kershaw has shown this arsenal works, so long as a solid cutter or slider can be incorporated. That will be the task for Detmers. If that is added, he's a potential no. 3 starter with the more likely outcome being that of a back-end innings-eating rotation staple.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Very tall, long athletic frame, not that dissimilar from the Dodgers Cody Bellinger. Long limbs, high waist, good strength and muscle while avoiding bulk. Runs well, moves well, loose athlete. Enviable hair follicles.

Hit: Changed setup mid-2019, crouching down to shrink his strike zone, while shortening the path of his hands. Sets up slightly open, with front toe offset, hands set by ear with bat movement approaching Sheffieldian levels pre-load. Lots of pre-pitch bouncing and movement, utilizes leg lift trigger mechanism, that's been toned down over the years. Natural loft to swing, old operation was reminiscent of former Cardinals prospect (and major leaguer) Colby Rasmus. Elite on base skills, running high walk rate throughout his professional career. At times approach bordered on passivity as he has one of the lowest swing rates in the minors. Made a conscious effort to improve in this regard upon reworking his setup in late June of 2019. Following these changes, Marsh was more aggressive, lowering his strikeout rate while improving his offensive production. Grade: 55

Power: While Marsh's former "Rasmus" swing was geared toward picturesque lefty shots in batting practice, his load was too long and often sapped away from Marsh's bat speed. After the adjustment Marsh significantly cut down the length of his load and became far more direct to the ball. This change unlocked a significant amount of pull-side pop, as Marsh saw his pull, flyball rate, and HR/FB all spike post change. Beyond that, he did all this while running one of the top five lowest infield flyball rates among players >300 PAs in the upper minors. This adjustment easily pushed his lower grade from fringe average to a strong average with some room to grow into above average. Grade: 50

Field: An above average everyday outfielder that can play all three outfield spots. Moves well coming in and going back, takes efficient routes and shows poise on tough plays. Good makeup speed and above average or better range. Marsh is arguably the best outfield defender in the upper-levels of the Angels organization and should push Jo Adell to his permanent home in left. Grade: 55

Arm: A right handed pitcher as a prep, Marsh has a strong outfield arm that plays better in the grass than it ever did on the mound. Good carry and accuracy, excellent strength. A weapon from the outfield. Grade: 60

Run: Above average runner that translates speed to base running and his defensive play. Strong base stealer, went 18-for-23 in AA and with his on base and contact skills could see plenty of opportunities to steal. Strong makeup speed and range in the outfield. Grade: 55

Overall: Marsh has blossomed from a physically blessed prep prospect to a complete five tool player on the cusp of the major leagues. His adjustment in approach, stance and path took him from a strong hitting prospect with supporting skills to one of the best overall outfielders in the minor leagues. He shows average bat to ball skills, good quality of contact, an elite batting eye and plate approach, and burgeoning power. To go along with these skills he's an above average runner, and a dangerous player once on base. He's a strong outfielder with the speed, arm, and confidence to play anywhere in the grass. Outside of his obvious tinkering there's very little to criticize within Marsh's game. Obvious style choices aside, a maxed out Marsh could resemble a young Charlie Blackmon.
