Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height, skinny, athletic high waisted build, with room to add significant good weight in the years to come. Should maintain high level of conditioning.

Hit: Sets up square, significant knee bend, with significant waist bend, hands set by shoulder, with bat set perpendicular over his back shoulder. Stays compact with a steep bat path to the ball that opens up holes in his swing on anything elevated. Murders low balls, but will swing through plenty of pitches in zone due to path. Passive approach, will get deep into counts but takes too many looking third strikes. Grade: 40

Power: Easy above average power, drives the ball to all fields with relative easy. Steep bay angle allows him to backspin balls with good carry to the deepest parts of the park. Slight in frame but generates hellacious bat speed. Should add good weight and develop into potential plus game power at peak. Grade: 55

Field: Fringe average tool, quick first step, but robotic actions in the field. Sure-Handed and displayed soft hands. Limited range, but will layout to his left. Slow on the pivot at times. Likely to slide to third base or second base long term due to lack of range and technicality at the position. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm with a quick release. Good strength and accuracy on throws deep in the hole. Has the arm strength to beat out fast runners on bang bang plays. Plenty of arm should he slide to third base long term. Grade: 55

Run: Clocks above average home to first times, and shows twitch in the field, particularly coming inside on slow rollers. Not an aggressive base stealer but is capable of going from home to third standing on a ball in the gap. Likely to slide back to average straight line speed as he ages. Grade: 50

Overall: A bat-first power hitting shortstop likely to stick in the dirt. Jackson is unlikely to ever carry a high batting average or on base percentage, and his zone miss is a red flag. His power however plays in game already and looks like he could grow into plus game in a matter of years. This coupled with his athleticism and defensive skills to stick in the dirt give him a strong foundation to build from. It's a second division regular profile at peak with upside if the hit tool progresses to average.
