Physical Description: Below average height, sloped shoulders, athletic high waisted build, room to add 25-30 pounds of good weight in the coming years.
Hit: Square to pitcher, hands set by back shoulder, moderate leg lift timing mechanism gives way to rock back. Level bat plane and path. Longer swing, but has shortened up over the last 18 months. Best struck balls are line drives up the middle, has shown the ability to go the other way and make plays with his at least above-average running. Should provide a solid approach, contact, and grind out at bats. Average hit tool, but improvements in on base ability and power could push the grade up. Grade: 50
Power: Lacks significant loft, lift, or strength to drive the ball with authority in the air. Does have the clean mechanics and barrel control to potentially meliorate his power in game. At the moment it's a below average tool, that mostly manifests itself in the way of gap shots and doubles off the wall. Grade: 40
Field: Above average outfield defender with skills that translate in centerfield. Likely a long term up the middle defender in the fringes of plus defense. Shows the necessary giddy up on balls coming in and going back, takes efficient routes and has the twitch needed to excel at the position. Grade: 55
Arm: Good on-line carry, to all bases in my looks. Not elite velocity (topped out at 87 mph from the outfield), but it's a strong accurate arm with distance and a quick trigger. His arm should be an asset for him in center and should allow him to handle right field. Grade: 55
Run: Above average runner that clocked some plus times later on in the process. Ran a 6.9 60 in my looks, with 55 grade home to first. There's a chance that he added the speed for it to play up to plus or better. Ran a 6.5 in January of 2020. Does an excellent job of closing in on balls in front of him in the outfield. Base running ability, good jumps, and pitcher reads at first. Grade: 55
Overall: One of the top Canadian players in the 2020 draft class, Calabrese provides a strong foundation of skills and a projectable frame that should add more weight. It's a hit over power profile at the plate but there's a chance his strong barrel control allows him to translate mechanical changes and added strength into more power at maturation. For now it's a fourth outfielder profile with a strong up the middle home defensively and a solid floor at the plate. A chance to push into an everyday role should the skills tick up at the plate.
