Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Doyle

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Compact, sturdy build with more developed thick upper body. Wide shoulders with a broad chest. Thicker neck. Moderate athleticism but displays excellent body control and balance. Completely physically matured.

Mechanics: Short and easy arm action. Moderate leg kick and moderate stride down the mound. Little to moderate effort in the delivery from an over-the-top motion. No concerns for durability or longevity.

Fastball: Low-90s offering with some ride and, at times, arm-side run. Likes to morph into a cutter-esque offering against lefties. Likes to spot the fastball at the top of the zone to compliment his secondaries. Heater plays up due to excellent command of the pitch. Shows a great feel for commanding the fastball arm-side and glove-side. Physical maturity and lack or arm speed suggests he's likely reached his peak velo. Grade: 50

Curveball: Low-70s 12-6 bender that he controls extraordinarily well. Command for the pitch is mature beyond his age. Likes to pitch backwards because of it. Showcases fantastic depth and some sweep at times. Can get a loopy when left up in the zone. Will need to really focus on spotting this pitch right below the knees. Very good reason to believe he's capable. Lack of velo may be a concern at the highest levels. Grade: 60

Changeup: Sparsely used at Louisville, Detmers hasn't needed to utilize his offspeed offering much. When shown, Detmers has showcased the ability to kill spin and command the pitch arm-side. Will be absolutely essential the pitch become a staple of his arsenal if the fastball/curveball combo is to reach it's ceiling. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Ability to throw strikes and pitch backwards is apparent. Might have plus command with the curveball and above average command with the fastball. Changeup command is at least fringe average. Strike-thrower. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Detmers has all the makings of a potential mid-rotation arm thanks to his ability to avoid self-inflicted damage and throw quality strikes. Right now, he's primarily a fastball/curveball pitcher. That will need to expand if he's to reach his ceiling. Clayton Kershaw has shown this arsenal works, so long as a solid cutter or slider can be incorporated. That will be the task for Detmers. If that is added, he's a potential no. 3 starter with the more likely outcome being that of a back-end innings-eating rotation staple.
