Jan 2021 Report
Evaluator: Jake Boes
Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/S
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 1
RuleV: 2022
Physical Description: Medium build with average strength throughout; squared shoulders, beefy forearms, high waist, stocky legs near physical projection. Torso may continue to fill out as he reaches maturity. Shows athleticism on the field; moves well considering the position. Can switch throw. Injury history includes a hamstring strain, quad issues, a concussion, and fracture of the patella.
Hit: Open stance; slight crouch to form a wide base. Fluid hands rest on the shoulder before perking into load. Hands are nearly as far back as possible at load; back elbow up, front elbow nearly locks. Rolls front foot over upon high finish. Appears more comfortable from the right side. Stiff lower half. Above-average bat speed generated from quick hands; swings lack lower-half engagement which hinders the quality of contact; shows a feel for the zone and displays discipline at the plate. Overall a well-below average hit tool padded by his ability to take free passes. Grade: 40
Power: Inconsistent raw power most apparent to the pull field when hitting from the right side. Patient approach may also hinder his ability to drive the ball early in counts. Mechanics issues with the lower half compound deficiencies, but remaining physical projection and continued pro reps should allow the power to play at below average levels long-term, scraping double-digit home run totals across a full season. Grade: 40
Field: Above-average receiver behind the dish; athletic movements with solid glove skills; quick glove transfers with adequate blocking abilities. Twitchy feet and can steal strikes with framing. Grade: 55
Arm: Pop times in the 1.95-2.10 range with a strong arm; inconsistent accuracy that can be fixed with continued pro instruction. Textbook throwing mechanics for a catcher straight from behind the ear. Throws from the knees are inconsistent. Despite double-plus pop times, the arm plays more plus with accuracy concerns. Grade: 60
Run: Below average runner; 4.38 home to first; faster and more athletic than the average catcher running the bases. Quick twitch movements should allow him to take the occasional extra-base and get back against strong pickoff moves, but will not be a base-stealing threat. Grade: 40
Overall: Seigler's display of athleticism and raw physical tools are his calling cards as a prospect. Although there is still projection remaining with his hit tool, it is difficult trying to justify a path to a first division regular role for him long-term. With his strong arm and defensive abilities, he could play as a possible everyday player on a struggling team or a platoon guy that could be leveraged with match-ups. Most likely, it is a reserve role at the highest levels.
