Physical Description: Sturdy, physically-advanced frame with room to fill out in the upper-half; tapered shoulders, strong arms that could carry more muscle with maturity. Lower-half nearly maxed; thick, muscular thighs and calves. Shows athleticism and want on the field. Injury history includes a tricep injury in 2019. Frame reminds me of current MLB catcher Robinson Chirinos.
Hit: A once-compact base is recently more wide and comfortable; open stance with the feet outside of shoulder-width; weight favors the backside with a toe-tap timing mechanism. Hands sit high near the ear with a raised back elbow before dropping to the letters into load. Changes leg kick from high and pronounced down to a stride at times. Plus bat speed generated from direct bat path and engaged, strong legs. Passive over patient approach in brief stateside stint. Still raw; big gap in projection. Overall, a below-average hit tool padded by power. Grade: 45
Power: Impressive raw power; plus bat speed and strength yield regular home runs to the pull field in BP; warning track power to the opposite field currently. Makes a conscious effort to drive the ball in games; body and swing should help the power translate in-game but the approach may ultimately hinder home run totals long-term. Grade: 50
Field: Likes to vary the set-up; crouched to upright to on a single knee. Average defender behind the plate; makes expected plays. Feet can be slow on pitches out of the zone at times; average blocking ability; suppresses balls in the dirt well; framing needs improvement. Grade: 50
Arm: Double-plus arm strength; pop times in the 1.92-2.02 range with effortless carry and a quick release. Anticipates runners well; always ready to make a throw; unafraid to back-pick runners sleeping. Accuracy less than desirable at times; bounces throws to second base or throws offline. Overall, a plus tool considering accuracy with double-plus potential long-term. Grade: 60
Run: A well-below average runner; not a base-clogger, but laboring strides and conservative approach on the basepaths will hinder overall potential in the future as the body continues to mature. Knows his limits on the bases; not likely to beat himself. Grade: 30
Overall: Extreme risk with the profile; not only is Gomez still young with just 15 games under his belt stateside but his average defense and marginal hit tool bring risk to even a backup role at the big league level. Gains with the hit tool could propel his ceiling to an everyday profile, but a reserve role is more likely.
