Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Short for the position. Average build. Lacks present upper body strength but has some room to grow. High-waisted.

Hit: Upright stance with knees slightly bent. Keeps hands high and left elbow back. Little pre-pitch movement. Small leg kick as he loads and steps into the pitch. Weight evenly distributed at contact. Level swing that generates line drive contact. Velocity can give him trouble down and on the inside half of the plate. Fights off pitches and shows an average eye. Barrels the ball but does not impact it. Strikes out too often. Grade: 40

Power: Below-average raw power. Mostly pull side. Makes soft contact which leads to a high-percent of singles. He has some physical projection and there is room for his in-game power to catch up to his raw power, but there's little indication he'll ever be a true power threat. Grade: 30

Field: Moves well in the field. Stays low on the ball and scoops it. Good backhander down the line. Has decent range laterally. Possesses solid awareness and makes the right play in the field. Grade: 50

Arm: He has some arm strength; sat mid-80s off the mound in HS. Gets the ball out quick. Grade: 50

Run: Fringe-average runner. Runs with some effort. May slow as he fills out. Not a threat to steal. Grade: 45

Overall: Naranjo has some room to grow, but none of his tools particularly stand out. He does not possess the power to profile at 1B and faces an uphill battle to reach the big leagues without hitting for more contact. He showed an intriguing collection of pitches off the mound as an amateur, but his velocity was below-average.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Beginning to fill out but offers a little further physical projection. Added bulk since signing, particularly to his core and lower half. Strong upper body. Heavier than his listed weight.

Hit: Slightly crouched, but very open stance. Has been opened since signing. Keeps his bat on his shoulder. Hands stay back. Big leg kick as he loads before stepping into the pitch. Level swing. Average or better bat speed. Aggressive at the plate and takes big cuts. Swing can get long. Swing and miss will be a part of his game. Average eye. Shows an ability to go up the middle. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power that is only beginning to materialize in-game. Mostly pull side. A present gap hitter. Does a good job of creating leverage. Improvement with his approach will allow him to get to his power more frequently. Could be average or better in time. Grade: 45

Field: Presently moves well in the outfield. Average range. Takes solid routes and plays balls well off the bounce. Foot speed is beginning to slow which may hinder his range in time. May end up in LF, despite his arm strength. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm that projects well in RF. Shows good velocity and carry. Balls are thrown on a rope. Accurate in limited looks. Grade: 60

Run: Fringe-average speed in the field but the frame suggests he may slow with time. Timed at 4.36 down the line from the right side. Runs with some effort. Demonstrates good instincts on the basepaths. Won't be a threat to steal. Grade: 45

Overall: Rodriguez remains raw but he is filling out and starting to get to his power. He will be a slow mover, but the power and arm strength project well in RF. His hit tool and approach will need to improve and his defensive ability will need to hold for him to project as anything more than a below-average player.

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Muscular build with a very strong lower half. Will continue to fill out as he develops into his 20s.

Hit: High handset with active hands through the zone paired with a hanging leg load. Swing finishes with a high low hand finish and can get long through the zone. Has a finish similar to Eloy Jimenez. Will work primarily pull side and has some slight swing and miss to his approach. Struggles to pick up spin. Swing and miss concerns as he moves up the chain Grade: 30

Power: Massive pull side power. Creates elite launch angles and exit velocities when he barrels up a ball. Maxed out at 119MPH in the past. Swing and miss issues can hold back the in game power. Barrel is sometimes late to enter the zone but has average bat speed and is incredibly strong, which carries a lot of his power. Grade: 60

Field: Soft hands but below average lateral movements. Reaction time could be better. Does show some athleticism to stay at third base but ultimately his size will keep him at first base, however he could wind up providing defensive value over there. Grade: 45

Arm: Plus arm strength across the diamond with long arm action from different angles. His arm won't be what keeps him from playing third base. Grade: 50

Run: Below average foot speed with a short, choppy stride. At his size, speed isn't going to be a tool he will boast. Grade: 30

Overall: Light tower power to the pull side who has already showcased his power across Rookie ball, and now finally growing into his frame. Likely a long term 1B whose potential will ultimately lean on his bat.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 223 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Draft - Round 18, NYM
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Physical upper-body build. Strong in the chest and arms. High waist and somewhat long-limbed. Build is that of a Major League starter. TJ Surgery 8/27/17.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works first base side of the rubber. Uses a quick front foot step towards first and rocks into a mid-section high leg kick. Stays stacked over the middle and creates good leverage from his drive leg. Long arm swing. Shows ability to get extension in his delivery and stays over the rubber. Solid shoulder/torso separation Uses a high 3/4 arm slot. Appears from older outings to have an inefficient deceleration.

Fastball: Runs 91-94 and will hit 95. Reportedly a pitch with high spin and movement backs it up, showing late 'rise' and using an arm angle to create the kind of spin axis that would produce high spin rates. Humphreys uses that characteristic by working the pitch well high in the zone. His heater doesn't have much in the way of horizontal movement but it does show that late, vertical 'rise' and runs above hitters bats. Above average command of the pitch, the spin and ride helps it play above average velocity. However, after Tommy John surgery and setbacks from it, those characteristics aren't yet back for the pitch. Grade: 50

Curveball: 77-79. Good, sharp, downward action. 11-5 shape with good depth. He gets consistent vertical drop on the pitch and was adept at throwing it for strikes before TJ. Works it to drop in on the hands of left handers and down and away from right handed hitters. Can throw it for a strike or get swings and misses. Like the fastball, arm slot backs ability to create good sprin axis needed to produce efficient spin on the pitch, backing up reports. Grade: 55

Slider: Newer pitch developed post TJ. Late, downward break. Pre-TJ it appeared he had a slider that looked like it had inconsistent shape with vertical drop, but occasionally mistaken for a cutter. Not a traditional arm slot for a slider but Humprheys shows feel for spin on his curveball and had good command of his other offerings pre-TJ. Limited views on this pitch combined with track record for other breaking stuff and waiting to see prior stuff 'comeback' from TJ leave it with a fringe-average look for now. Grade: 45

Changeup: 81-83. Inconsistently used offering. Mostly showed good vertical drop, but less consistent arm side run. Able to use it to get under bats of left handers. Like the rest of his arsenal, pre-TJ command was average enough to make it a useable pitch that needs improvement. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Prior to TJ, Humphreys' command is what made his arsenal play up. Showed above average consistent comment with the fastball and with the curveball. DId not command the changeup as well as the other two pitches, but enough to give it fringe-average status. Most effective command comes from working north/south with the fastball and curveball, less so glove/arm sides. Unknown overall command of the slider. Avoids walks. Post-TJ surgery, plus complications and limited looks after getting back on the mound are a question mark on pre-TJ abilities. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Prior to his injury, Humphreys looked on track to profile as a back of the rotation arm. He had two above average pitches that he commanded well, and a fringe-average third offering that he showed control with. He avoided walks and showed the feel for spin and knew how to make his stuff work, and where. He has the build to start and a moderately effortless delivery. His arm slot is consistent with creating a good spin axis on his heater and bender, which work well together. It's reminiscent of current Tribe reliever James Karinchak. Karinchak had a high 3/4 arm slot in college with a high spin heater and curve. Cleveland raised his arm slot when he got into the system, which took some effort with his postural shift and gives him command issues at times. I don't think Humphreys would have that problem because of his low effort in keeping his center of gravity balanced. Even if Cleveland doesn't look to raise Humphreys' arm slot, the fastball and curveball can tunnel well together with the release point and spin. If the spin and command can return once he's back on the mound, it can help him profile well as a reliever, which might even tick up his velocity. He could be used as a multi-inning relief option too. Adding the slider could help his arsenal remain in the rotation. Pre-TJ he had more than enough command to start. Limited looks post TJ make it more difficult where his future is. He had complications after the surgery, which make the comeback more challenging.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Average starters build. Solid frame. Filled out. Average wingspan. Classic, medium, build for a starting pitcher. Shows good athleticism and flexibility. Works to get the most from is build.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stands around the middle of the rubber. Shifts front foot to the third base side before leaning into a funky, coiling left kick where he breaks his hands over. Drives with back hip well. Does not get into his lower half very deeply with the back leg. Solid extension with the front leg. Could get shoulders and torso a little more square to the plate ahead of his arm path than he currently does. Three-quarters arm slot. Repeatable, solid delivery.

Fastball: 90-93 and runs up to 94. Below average spin. Above average command east and west. Most commonly misses up and to his glove side, when he does miss. Not a lot of movement so he needs to command it well with its fringe-average velocity and spin. Competitive pitch when he paints the black with it. Could be more velocity to come, especially in a relief role. Grade: 45

Curveball: 79-82 with 2-8 shape. Low usage breaking ball offering. Lacks depth and overall is a below average offering. Grade: 40

Slider: 83-85 with 9-4 shape. Tight, late break. Adept at keeping it down and to his glove side. Pairs well with his fastball and with his arm slot. Easily the best offering in his entire arsenal and will miss bats efficiently. Grade: 50

Changeup: 77-79. Has some late fade to it, but like the curveball, is a low usage pitch without any impressive characteristics other than keeping right handed hitters off of the fastball. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Control over command arm, but has a good chance to have average to above-average command overall. Taking into account just throwing his fastball and slider, his command is probably a tick better. Needs more consistent fastball command, especially to his arm side. His curveball and changeup command come in below average, which probably explains why he is fastball/slider heavy. Needs at least his changeup to improve along with its command to remain a starter. Fastball/slider combination is good enough options with enough command to profile as a reliever presently. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Scott has the build and history of durability (once through a 120+ complete game in college) but lacks the present fastball zip and third pitch to profile as a starter. He is good at staying in the zone, avoiding walks in a way a pitcher without premium stuff needs to. Neither his changeup nor curveball presently looks like an average offering. Most likely, he needs the changeup to emerge as more fringe-average, at least, in order to keep hitters off the fastball and give him to the tools to turn a lineup over twice. He heavily features his fastball/slider in his starts for the reason that he has better command of both and his slider is an average/nearing above-average offering. He can miss bats with the slider and there may be some additional velocity still to come with his fastball. Scott is a self-proclaimed nerd about the craft of pitching. He's worked hard in each of his pro offseasons to add velocity. He's already begun to do that, as he went from 88-90 in college to 90-93 in pro ball. Another tick or two is possible, but more likely that actually comes in the bullpen. In which case he can profile as an effective, strike-throwing reliever with two average offerings from the left side.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 27 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Shot, compact frame. Ordinary build, but slightly stronger, bigger, especially in his lower half than the fourth outfield type his body and profile suggests.

Hit: Even stance and base. Starts with a vertical barrel. Uses moderate leg kick to turn his back and turn his front hip inward. Stays balanced and gets good hand/hip separation on his swing. Good use of hands. Average bat speed. Shows patience, knowledge of the strike zone and good pitch recognition. Can be beaten with good breaking stuff down and away. Handles left handers well. Some swing and miss concerns with a more aggressive leg kick. Grade: 40

Power: Good use of hips and shoulders to match the barrel with the plane of the pitch. Uses hips fairly well. Has pop to the opposite field. Just average bat speed overall. Can handle the fastball and drive it. Has made some adjustments to his lower half to unlock more power, but sustainability to facing upper level breaking stuff is a concern. Grade: 40

Field: Fearless defender. Does not have speed he did early in his pro career which impacts his range. Good effort. Average reads. Decent athleticism. Profiles best in left field. Can make the flashy play at times. Grade: 40

Arm: Left field type arm. Sound mechanics and positioning on throws. Not enough straight line carry on throws to profile well in centerfield or right field. Grade: 30

Run: 4.33 home-to-first as a left hander. Choppy runner without long strides with his shorter legs. Lower half has filled out more through his career. Runs less than he did early in his career but runs the bases well. Not much of a base stealing threat anymore. Grade: 40

Overall: Blaze Ka'ai Tom's profile was speed/hit over power when he was first drafted. There was talk of trying him at second base with his arm. Was a good and aggressive runner early in his career. Thicker lower half and change in approach and moved him to more of a fringe outfielder with interesting pop. There are some fourth outfielder type tools there with the ability to put up a quality at bat and some pop in it. Would profile better if he could regularly be an average defender at all three outfield spots but is best suited for left field. Most fourth/fifth outfield types have more defensive upside, where Tom's value lies more in his bat than it used to. He could put up solid offensive numbers off the bench if he were to climb his way into this role but the overall value is limited now as a prospect.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Small frame with a thick lower half. Pronounced thighs and butt with a lean, muscular upper body. May not live up to the listed 5'9. No real room for projection here. You might sneak in a little muscle in the upper half, but that's it. Strong hands and forearms.

Hit: Semi-crouched stance, sits back into moderate knee bend. Hands sit even with the chin with the bat angled over the shoulder with a little waggle. Average base straight on to the pitcher. Trigger is more a leg lift than kick. He pumps the leg and then lifts it to start the swing. It hangs in the air with a quick foot circle before setting it back down in the same place -- the move is reminiscent of Ichiro. Little to no coil in the swing. Hands remain in place. Very patient, nearly passive approach. Always waiting for a better pitch. Often uses inside-out, flat swing path; Not quite a slap, but not driving the ball either. Doesn't whiff much; knows how to get the bat on the ball. Above average package all things considered, but could benefit from striking the ball a bit harder. Grade: 55

Power: Fringe raw at best, but that might be a stretch. Small frame, average bat speed, and suboptimal swing path make it well below-average game power. There's no projection here, so there's little reason to expect significant power growth. Extra bases will come from driving the ball in the gaps and running. Doesn't lift the ball well. Grade: 30

Field: Good instincts and routes. Appears to track the ball well off the bat and react immediately. Instincts help range play up with only average speed. With aggressive defensive positioning in the modern game, he shouldn't have an issue sticking in center -- which is good because the bat doesn't play in a corner. Grade: 55

Arm: Average carry and zip from the outfield and typically on target. Good instincts get him in position to get the most out of his arm. Enough for center and left, but would be below-average in right. Grade: 50

Run: Clocked 4.16, 4.29 H-1st times. Shows a range of below-average to above average run times. Quick to get up to speed; tick above- average underway. Given maxed out frame, any additional weight will drive down speed. Likely settles in around average with risk to drop lower. Grade: 50

Overall: Kwan is the old schooler's dream. Light-hitting leadoff type who walks more than he strikes out and has good defensive chops. His instincts help his average range play up and allow him to get to balls he wouldn't otherwise have a play on. The approach and frame show zero promise for game power. Despite having a hit tool that can carry him, none of the other tools are potent enough to play at the top level. He profiles best as a defensive replacement who can also get on base for you. If he can optimize his swing and get a little more power out of the bat, there's a path for him to sneak into a below-average regular or platoon role because the hit and glove are so strong.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Small framed, quick-twitch athlete, plays with speed and passion.

Hit: Slightly open stance. Legs shoulder width apart. Slight leg kick. Short, compact, contact-oriented swing with good barrel whip and bat control. Sees spin well. Patient, and puts a lot of balls in play. Draws walks and rarely strikes out. Needs to hit the ball on a line or on the ground to be successful. Too many popups to result in an above-average tool. Grade: 50

Power: Contact-oriented swing. Three career HR in over 1100 minor league at-bats. Does not make hard enough contact to profile for any power in his game. Grade: 20

Field: Range is good at SS. Should be a better tool than it has proven to be. Projects better as a second baseman or a super-utility player who could handle the outfield too. Grade: 50

Arm: Average, makes throw quickly and efficiently, arm to play anywhere in the infield or outfield with the exception of RF Grade: 50

Run: Above average tool, quick and light on his feet. Plays using instincts, shows poise and confidence on base baths. Can beat out balls on the ground for hits, unfortunately gets caught stealing too often, but to his credit keeps running, just above a 60% stolen base success rate in 2019. Speed is there for an increased success rate going forward. Grade: 60

Overall: Terry Francona said Clement "plays like he is riding on a rocket." Profiles best as a Swiss Army Knife type of player who could see time at 2B, SS, 3B, LF and CF. Plus makeup and grit. Needs to hit and run efficiently to make any impact in the big leagues.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 145 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Lean frame that currently lacks upper body strength. Small wrists. Has some room to fill out. Average athlete. Plays with a smile on his face.

Hit: Upright and open stance from both sides. Moderate leg kick. Keeps his weight back and closes as he steps into the pitch. Hands stay out in front but they're lower from the left side. Rotates his hips well to generate some leverage. It's an easy, repeatable stroke. Average or slightly better bat speed. Currently makes better contact from the right side. Shows an ability to go up the middle. Grade: 45

Power: Below-average raw power but there's reason to believe he can grow into more if he adds some strength. Some natural lift off the bat. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well to his left and right. Flashes good instincts and covers enough ground on the left side of the infield. Above-average range. Gets to the ball and makes the routine plays. Quick hands. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm and accuracy. Not a lot of carry. Short-hopped several balls to 1B from SS in looks while he was deep in the hole. Quick transfer and release. Arm may play better at 2B. Grade: 50

Run: Above-average straight line speed; timed 4.18 down the line from the left side. Runs with some effort. Grade: 55

Overall: Pastrano offers an intriguing frame and a set of tools that are right around average. He's young and raw and fits in with Cleveland's collection of lower level middle infielders. The lack of a standout tool may hold him back from being anything more than a below-average player.

Physical Description: Thick, stocky. Has definitely added weight and muscle since college and his last appearance in the minors during the 2018 season (missed all of 2019 with a labrum injury and 2020 was cancelled). Beginning to resemble a football running back build.

Hit: Upright stance. Legs shoulder width apart. Hands at his shoulder with back elbow up, hips set back a bit with a slight pigeon-toed back foot. Small leg kick leads into an aggressive swing. Really drives the ball. Excellent strike zone awareness. Grade: 45

Power: Natural loft to current swing. Swings very hard and aggressively but controls the bat well. Gets good torque with hip rotation. Uses leverage to drive the ball. Added strength to frame. Conservatively possesses a 12-15 homer bat. Grade: 40

Field: Very smooth, quick transitions. Gets to the ball quickly. Does everything you want a middle infielder to do. Grade: 50

Arm: Makes quick and even acrobatic throws. Adjusts arm angle to make the quickest play. Accurate, fringy arm for SS. Best profiles is 2B. Grade: 45

Run: Above-average tool. Will be interesting to see how he moves with the added bulk. Base stealer and asset on the basepaths. Gets good jumps and has good instincts. Grade: 60

Overall: Profiles as a potential top of the lineup, bat-first second baseman and on-base machine, if everything works. Lack of defensive versatility puts more pressure on the bat and the legs. Hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2018. However, when he has played he has been impressive. Until he is "back" and reasserts himself expectations will be tempered.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4, CIN
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Long frame that's fully maxed out on projection. Simple over the top delivery that he repeats well. Gets plus extension leading to a low release point that creates an impressive vertical approach angle.

Delivery & Mechanics: Big frame, long limbs that allow him to get plus extension down the mound. Works third base side of the rubber, most likely to account for his cross-stride and the immense amounts of run he gets on his fastball. Rock and fire motion. Throws from a true 3/4 arm slot that can be tough on left handers. Could incorporate his lower half better in his delivery to help with issues with his cross stride.

Fastball: Sitting 90-93, and able to run it up to 95 early in outings. Spin rate comes in around 2,400, giving him above-average spin even though the velocity itself isn't above average. Creates a flat approach on delivery pairs with plus vertical break. Struggles to command up in the zone but does get swings and misses in the zone with it, so it seems to play better than the velocity suggests. Grade: 55

Slider: A low-80s offering that shows tight spin with late horizontal break. Can leave it over the middle of the plate on occasion but shows the makings on potentially a plus pitch. Grade: 45

Changeup: Low to mid-80s that dies at the plate with below-average command of the pitch. Holds arm speed well and could be an above-average pitch in spurts. Needs to get more comfortable throwing the pitch. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average control of the fastball throughout outings and fringy command, which is troubling because he works off the heater most often. Shows less feel for his offspeed. Can show impressive strike-throwing ability in small samples but loses it more in long outings. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Moss has the body of a starter and shows some feel for spin, but the secondary offerings profile as fringe-average to average at best, and he doesn't have above average command or control to fall back on. He can get swings and misses with the fastball and slider, but his stuff doesn't hold in long outings. More efficient mechanics are needed to makeup for his cross-body motion in order to improve the ability to throw strikes consistently. The profile does lend itself to being an interesting FB/SL relief option.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 6
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, medium build. Strong, athletic and physical but not overly muscular or big. Possibility to add some bulk as he matures professionally.

Hit: Hands at shoulder height away from the body. Back elbow slightly raised with a fairly open stance. Feet a little more than shoulder-width apart. Base expands during swing. Traded a toe tap for a leg kick during the 2019 season which improved swing efficiency. Smooth stroke and patient hitting approach. Both left and right-handed swings appear very similar. Good feel for hitting from both sides of the plate but definitely has been more successful. Is more aggressive and drives the ball better as a left handed hitter. Controls bat well overall. Has had some issues with off-speed pitches so far as pro, which has led to a high strike-out rate. Expect some of that swing and miss to subside with more experience in pro ball. Proven to have adept strike zone awareness. Grade: 40

Power: Drives the ball to the gaps and makes some loud outs. Swing not geared for power at this point, more of a line drive and gap approach, occasionally will flash average power and drive one deep, should develop into fringe-average to average power. Grade: 40

Field: Soft hands, good instincts. Quick transitions. Doesn't move quite as well as you would like at SS. Somewhat limited range. Glove geared more for 2B at this point where the defense will be average. Grade: 50

Arm: Arm strength and accuracy to play short or 3B. Average to slightly above. Grade: 50

Run: Doesn't run well but makes up for it with good instincts and baseball IQ. Comes hard out of the box every time. Stole six bases in 70 games during the 2019 season. Speed is slightly below average and may even tick down as he matures. Grade: 40

Overall: Delgado reached full-season ball as a 19 year old and held his own. The glove and bat best profile at 2B or perhaps as a utility/bench player. It's not out of the realm of possibility for him to blossom into everyday big leaguer if he can keep drawing walks and add some more pop to that swing.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA, MIL
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Average frame with a thick lower half. Round butt and big thighs. Upper body has room for a little weight in the chest, shoulders and arms. Has that catcher build, hard to see this body profiling anywhere else given the lack of overall athleticism. Quick and agile despite limited top end speed. Outweighs the listed 150 pounds.

Hit: Sets up with torso upright and moderate knee bend. Balanced stance with hands nose-high at the back shoulder, bat angled over shoulder. Loads with subtle kick that and slight coil. Hands drift back a few inches. Relatively flat swing path. Setup and pre-swing actions have quieted since being moved to Cleveland. Average patience and approach. Whiffs at the top of the zone. Knows how to work a count to get a pitch he likes. Average bat speed. Has the makings of a fringe-average hit tool that could get to average. Grade: 45

Power: Strong lower half but the frame doesn't ooze power. Likely a pull-power only guy at peak with average bat speed and fringe-average raw. Gap power, but too slow to stretch anything for extra bases. Frame isn't projectable, so what you see is likely what you get for pop. Flat swing path will limit power in games. Grade: 40

Field: Catcher. Has used both squat and one knee receiving styles. Looks comfortable behind the plate. Soft glove; easy receiver. Mobile behind the plate with quick reactions. Solid blocker. Whole package appears to be trending toward an above-average receiver. Grade: 55

Arm: Very limited looks. Good zip with little effort. Reported to be above average. May change with additional film/looks. Grade: 55

Run: Slow starter out of the box who gets somewhere between fringe and below-average underway. Catcher speed. Clocked a 4.42 H-1st. Below average speed for now but will have to watch conditioning to maintain it. Grade: 40

Overall: Glove-first catcher lauded for his defense. Melendez has drawn positive reviews for his ability to handle a staff for his age and looks very comfortable behind the plate. Defensively, the whole package looks to be above-average or better as long as his conditioning stays in check. The bat is contact over power right now with very limited projection for additional pop. How much contact he makes will determine whether he can stick in the majors as a backup or is more of a 3rd catcher/emergency call-up type. His limited offensive profile would be even more vulnerable with a move to an electronic strike zone.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 15
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Modest, undersized relief build. Small frame, lean but athletic. Standard, non-physical relief body type that is dependent on deception, command rather than physical, loud tools, and raw stuff.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stands mostly over the middle of the rubber, which isn't standard for a lot of relievers, mainly left-handed relievers. Low effort delivery. Moderate leg kick and back tilt. Works from the stretch. Gets into his lower half well. Shows good body control. Hides the ball behind his back leg, giving him some added deception. Solid extension despite shorter legs. Good hip/shoulder separation and gets his shoulders square to the plate, ready to bring his arm through his three-quarter arm slot.

Fastball: 89-92 and tops out at 93. Despite its well below-average velocity, it comes in at around and above 2400 RPM, which is that of a fastball that typically sits 95-96. It's a unique juxtaposition. With above-average command and its spin, this pitch is an average offering for Nelson despite the fact that it has fringe-average velocity. The spin gives it enough vertical movement to play above its velocity. Grade: 50

Slider: Runs 81-82 and tops out at 83. 10-4 shape. Another low velocity offering by Nelson that also comes in at well above average spin rates (2846 RPM). It almost looks like a very shallow-depth curveball, or that it's going to look like a changeup, but has late, vertical drop and some tilt. Splitting the difference between lack of traditional velo, good command, and a high spin rate (without context of spin efficiency) that it's at least an average offering, maybe more. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Avoids walks and stays in the strike zone at exceptional rates. Works good up in the zone with the fastball, and low in the zone with the slider. He can manipulate the slider to have a little more sweep and commands both the same. He's comfortable locating either of his pitches inside, and outside, to right handed or left handed hitters. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Nelson is a very unique reliever. He's not physical and doesn't have traditionally loud, raw stuff. He's also more than a command LOOGY (although he would be devastating in that role, if it still existed). The spin on his fastball and command allow it to play above its middling velocity, especially because it works well up in the zone and he commands it there well, too. The slider tunnels very well off of the fastball at nearly the same release point plus his arm slot. It also has premium spin despite lower than average velocities. The radar gun probably doesn't match his minor league results if you are just scouting the stat line. But hitters have a hard time making quality contact against his slider, if at all. He'll probably need to lean heavy on that offering to be a successful reliever and he is going to need every ounce of his above-average command to make it work. But he's shown that so far in the minors enough to believe he's going to make a good career in a middle relief role at the least at the moment.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Slight frame that has plenty of room to fill out. Athletic. Listed at 6'0" but appears shorter. Has some baseball bloodlines.

Hit: A natural righty that began switch hitting as an amateur. Slightly crouched stance from both sides. Big leg kick as he loads. Uses his whole body to generate above-average or better bat speed. Level swing. Attacks the ball. Above-average eye on pitches out of the zone, but has some trouble with offspeed stuff and pitches away. Swing can get long. He's also overaggressive at the plate which contributed to a high strikeout rate in 2019. Flashes an ability and desire to lay down a bunt on occasion. Grade: 40

Power: Possesses average raw power from both sides, but inconsistently gets to it. Ball jumps off the bat if he makes good contact but it is generally to the gaps. Needs to become stronger and tone down the swing to better impact the ball. Creates good leverage but overaggressiveness and lack of strength hinder his power output. Tries to kill the ball and it often leads to popups. Grade: 40

Field: Fluid actions in the field. Good footwork. Stays low and keeps the ball in front of him. Moves well to his left and right. Good instincts and gets to the ball. Above-average range. Overall package suggests he can stay at SS. Grade: 55

Arm: Quick transfer and release but only average arm strength. On-line carry to 1B. Adept at getting the ball to 2B. Makes the routine plays. Grade: 50

Run: Quick out of the box and shows above average times to 1B from both sides. Has demonstrated an ability to steal in his short career. Grade: 55

Overall: Valdes possesses some impressive tools, but his ultimate success depends on his bat. He will need to grow stronger and tone down his approach at the plate, but if he does so, he has regular upside. That's a big ask, however.

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 15
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Solid, compact frame but well built physically. Lavastida was a shortstop and third basemen in high school and converted to catcher in junior college. Good height and size for a converted catcher. Physical overall build with a strong upper body, arms, hands, and lower half.

Hit: Even stance and even base. Horizontal barrel. Moderate leg kick gives him a solid rotation. Very fluid hips and balanced swing. His hands are quiet getting into unload, letting his shoulders and hips carry his weight transfer. Lavastida gets his front foot down quick and gets his hips out well above his hands. Above-average bat speed. Good bat control and knowledge of the strike zone. Did not show major swing and miss concerns in 2018 and showed a disciplined and mature approach for a hitter drafted after one year of junior college. Grade: 40

Power: Very fluid mechanical swings. Lets his hips and shoulders work for him and uses strong hands to generate above average bat speed. There is some semblance of natural loft in his swing, keeping his hands above the barrel. Shows the ability to let the ball travel and drive the other way, and has shown good contact authority to his pull side as well. Grade: 45

Field: A better receiver than you would assume of a player who just started catching at the end of 2018 as an amateur. Athletic ability translates behind the plate. Needs to work to get down to block balls low and use his body. Will pull the glove back before pitch and look like he's reaching, but generally quiet receiving the ball, showing some ability to frame and not overcorrect. With a short track record of catching and a long way to go, it's hard to say definitively that he will end up as an average defensive receiver, despite how far he's come in a short time period. Grade: 30

Arm: 2.11 pop time. Good, quick transfer. Throws have a tendency to sail on him. Average arm strength, but accuracy is an issue. Did throw out 35% of runners in 2019. Grade: 45

Run: 4.45 home-to-first. Not plodding out of the box but doesn't pick up much speed. Comparing his speed to other catchers, his speed wouldn't be bottom of the scale and won't be a total base clogger but home to first and as a base runner it's below average. Grade: 30

Overall: Lavastida is a bat-first backstop right now with a lot of room to go developmentally. Having 2020 off was not a good situation for anyone, especially for Lavastida, who just converted to catching in junior college and has only caught in his JUCO season in 2018 and half of the season in 2019. He has an average arm and good athleticism behind the plate that makes you think there's a chance he can be an average defender. But because he's so new to the position and donning the tools of ignorance sets player development back longer than normal, there's a long way for him to go to get there at the moment. He was an infielder in high school and the bat could profile if he moved to second base, but it's a better fit at catcher. Player development is already not linear, but Lavastida specifically will probably have an even more arduous path to the majors, should he get there, even in a bat first backup catcher type role.

Hits/Throws: L/L

Physical Description: Very large man. Big frame, broad shoulders, muscular build, athletic. Football linebacker type.

Hit: Stands fairly upright at the plate, hands back just below shoulder level with elbow up and back during load. Quick bat. Creates good loft. Swing is smooth but can get long. Overall mechanical and timing issues have resulted in a career 37% minor league strikeout rate. Good pitch recognition but sometimes his patience borders on passivity. Grade: 30

Power: Big-time raw power. Swing creates good loft and leverage. Very easy power. When he gets a hold of one the ball explodes off the bat and travels a very long way. Grade: 60

Field: Covers good ground with his speed. Gets to balls that others may not. Average in center, but a greater asset in right. Grade: 55

Arm: Arm viewed as plus to even plus-plus. Makes strong accurate throws, profile for RF. Grade: 60

Run: Runs well, especially for his size. Has proven to be an effective baserunner and base stealer. Speed to close on balls in the outfield and make plays with his legs. Grade: 55

Overall: Benson is an athletic specimen. He has four above-average tools. Showed off power potential with a four-homer game for Lake County in 2019. Without an improvement in the hit tool, he will end up a bench/platoon player who can offer some speed, pop, and take a walk.

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 240 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2013 IFA
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall, physical build. The body type you'd like from a potential starting pitcher. Long limbs and strong throughout. Solid frame and physically filled out.

Delivery & Mechanics: Mejia works from the first base side of the rubber with fluid, athletic delivery that he repeats well. He uses a leg kick and creates some hip rotation going into that leg kick. He's got long limbs and does a good job getting positive extension with his plant leg. He gets his hips and shoulders square to the plate well in front his release through a three-quarter arm slot. The arm slot is so far away from his body that it looks like he would have a cross-body type delivery, but he does a good job getting plenty of extension that his arm slot and release point are out far in front, which helps him with command and perceived velocity.

Fastball: Runs 91-93 and tops out at 95. Has some natural armside sink to it and Mejia is adept at locating it to his arm side, back dooring the pitch to left handers and running it in on right handers. Locates it at an above average rate. Despite just having average-velocity and below-average spin (2100), the movement, command and extension on his delivery and release point allow the pitch to play up slightly above its velocity and spin. Grade: 50

Slider: 82-84 with tight, two plane break with 2-7 shape. Shows good feel for spin (2400 RPM) and the arm slot helps him get good sweep on the slider to miss bats. Hitters easily swing over top of the pitch and it tunnels well with his arm slot and extension on the release point. Grade: 50

Changeup: Low-usage third offering. 79-81. Promising fade, but not a lot of arm side run. Good separation from his fastball. Locates it with fringe-average command. Needs to catch up with fastball and slider to give him a third offering to stay as a starter, but right now it's a competitive enough pitch to offer to left-handers and gets some swings and misses. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Mejia throws his fastball and slider for strikes consistently and hits spots all over the zone. He fills up the zone with quality strikes with both offerings and avoids walks. His changeup command is a little behind the other two, but shows promise. Mejia has a fluid delivery that he repeats well and gets him into position to throw consistent strikes. His ability to miss bats helps out with behind ahead in counts and avoid walks. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Mejia has had abdominal issues that have required surgery, so he missed time in 2018 and a lot of the season in 2019 as well. He was put on the 40 man roster in 2019 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Durability at the moment looks to be an issue holding him back from moving up as fast as someone with his command and two average offerings should. He's 24 and has yet to reach Double-A. Though his changeup is fringe-average now, it could be enough to profile at the back end of the rotation thanks to his command and the arm slot/extension on his release that helps his pitches play up. He could fill a relief role with the fastball and slider, which seems to be the more likely outcome at this point because of the time he's missed with injuries and he has one minor league option remaining. Health and moving to the bullpen could get him back on a quicker path back to the majors like he was thought to be on after being added to the 40 man roster before passing A+ in 2018.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, burly frame mostly filled out, but more projection to come due to his long levers. Imposing figure on the bump. Short arm action that operates out a 3/4 slot. Works very quickly in his delivery, albeit with some head whack and gets down the mound with ease.

Delivery & Mechanics: Traditional 3/4 arm slot with loose arm action and good arm speed. Generates good hip/shoulder separation that shows he's a good athlete. Needs to use his lower half better. Rotates somewhat violently in his delivery and needs to use hips more working efficiently. Plan leg lacks balance when it comes through and causes him to fall off towards first base. He'll probably have to fix some of this to be able to start long-term. Good enough athlete to believe he can make these fixes.

Fastball: Works primarily 90-94 with some arm side run, touching some 95 and 96 on occasion. Chance to sit in the mid-90s is not hard to project. Will locate to any part of the zone with plus command. Pitch seems to get on top of hitters due to his frame and quick delivery. Grade: 50

Curveball: Sitting 72-77, with a 12 to 6 break that has a big looping action. Command is fringy but creates good S/M potential when it's on. Currently a fourth pitch. Grade: 45

Slider: 79-83. Shows late break with some heavy tilt. Creates a ton of swing and miss, especially to RH bats. Commands it well, and likely will be plus offering long term. Grade: 50

Changeup: 80-83. An above-average offering with late tumbling break and pairs extremely well off of the fastball. Maintains arm speed well and keeps hitters off balance throwing it in any count. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Solid control with all four pitches. Shows tremendous confidence throwing offspeed in any count. Sequences very well by locating the fastball up early and pairing it with the Slider and changeup down in the zone. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Big time upside with all the fastball/slider combo currently, and the changeup looks to be a budding plus pitch. Curveball progression will be a point of emphasis as he develops but currently stands with at least three above-average pitches. Needs work of mechanics in lower half to get to more command than just control. Head whack and overall delivery present relief risk.

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Undersized middle infielder build. Slender legs and compact frame. Athletic but overall undersized with little room for projection. Should maintain athleticism needed to play up the middle with current build.

Hit: Open stance with horizontal barrel. Active hands in pre-load. Strides closed with moderate weight transfer. Gets front food down quick. Short to the ball with good bat control and compact swing. Able to pull hands in on inside pitchers and use quick wrists and bat speed to get around on most offerings. Patient approach. Shows good understanding of the strike zone and which pitches he can put into play effectively, rather than offering at everything because he has good bat control. Ability to make consistent contact with mature approach offer ability to put the ball in play, through he won't carry high exit velo's and will need to rely on a high BABIP to carry the tool. High grade velocity may be difficult for him given present strength. Grade: 45

Power: Lacks the frame and present strength for anything more than below-average power. Flat swing geared more for line drives. Has shown better contact authority to his pull side since opening his stance. Has average bat speed but no loft in swing. Gap/line drive pop at best. Grade: 30

Field: Fundamentally sound defender. Moves well laterally. Gets solid reads from both second base and shortstop. Good hands and can turn the double play for both sides of the keystone. Better range at second base than shortstop. Very steady defender. Grade: 50

Arm: Accurate arm. Able to throw from multiple angles accurately. Shows good internal clock. Average carry. Loses some arm strength going to left. Best suited for second base but average arm strength for a shortstop. Grade: 50

Run: Agile and gets out of the box quickly. I had him clocked consistently home-to-1st between 4.05-4.10, but I don't get the impression that he's typically a burner as that time would suggest. He doesn't really glide but gets down the line very efficiently. Uses good instincts on the bases and gets good jumps on steals. Fluid runner. Grade: 60

Overall: Fermin can spray the ball to all fields. He has a very contact-oriented swing and has the mature approach and spin recognition that should carry his hit tool as he begins to face more advanced pitching. He sees the ball well and has good hand/eye coordination and bad control. Very little power projection without more of a swing change to create more loft. Has the speed to make an impact on the bases. He's a better defender at second base and would be more of a fill-in at shortstop and probably lacks the arm to play third. He's a very fundamentally strong, and mature player in many facets of the game. Bi-lingual, smart, and well-liked teammate. Definitely a baseball rat and there's a chance he gets more out of his skill set thanks to the ability to make consistent contact and draw walks. There are some fringy similarities to Fermin's game to Jose Ramirez when he exploded at Lake County. Ramirez was a year younger in his stop there and showed more power. It's more likely that Fermin has a chance to have the role that everyone thought Ramirez would have long term in the majors, that being a utility infielder.
