Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Bigger than his listed weight. Tall and broad. Big shoulders. Strong thighs. Filled out.

Hit: Mirror-image stance with more pre-pitch bat movement from the right side. Stands open and slightly crouched. Keeps his knees tight. Moderate leg kick as he steps into the ball. Wide base at impact. Inconsistent bat path, but often upward. Looks more comfortable from the left side. Plus bat speed that drives balls to the outfield when he makes good contact. Most contact is to the pull-side. Flashes some understanding of the strike zone, but is overly aggressive at the plate and tries to kill the ball too often. Shows a demonstrable tendency to get under the ball, which has led to a significant amount of flyouts. Struggles with off-speed stuff down, which is unsurprising given his height. Strikeouts will be a significant part of his game; has so far struck out at a 46% clip across two minor league seasons. Possesses the underlying ability to see growth with the tool, but he needs to tone down his approach and let his pitch come to him. Grade: 30

Power: Plus-plus raw power from both sides; puts on shows during BP. Already uses his hips well and has plus bat speed. Power shows up in-game, but at the expense of his hit tool. Grade: 60

Field: Gets low on rollers and shows enough range to get under routine fly balls. May lose a step if he adds additional bulk, which could relegate him to LF or 1B. Moves well enough to fit in either position, but his sheer size may work best at 1B. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 55

Run: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 40

Overall: Garcia's huge raw power is his calling card, but his approach and aggressiveness at the plate will hinder his ability to get to it at higher levels. He offers intriguing upside, but there's a very real possibility he'll never get out of the low minors. He's played a total of six games in the last two seasons and simply needs reps. He'll be Rule V eligible in 2021.

Age: 17 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 IFA
RuleV: 2025

Overall: The Yankees top international signing in the 2020 class is Hans Montero, a shortstop out of the Dominican Republic. Montero isn't a physical specimen, and lacks the physical projection you'd typically associate with these teenage prospects but does come with a strong baseball acumen and good hands. He's an above-average runner with a strong arm, he fits best up the middle and on the dirt. Montero's offensive skills lag behind the defense right now but it's a line-to-line offensive profile with gap power.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 2
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Breaux is a muscle bound masher. Big forearms, strong back and shoulders. Was a former two-way player in college and has battled bouts of elbow soreness since getting drafted.

Hit: Starts with feet wider than shoulders, stance slightly closed. Holds hands in the middle of his body with gentle swaying to keep them loose. Modest leg kick and stride. As he lifts his front foot the hands cock and everything explodes towards the pitch. Stance opens up as he strides and he's able to keep hands inside the baseball. He's widened his feet and closed off since college. Hammers fastballs on the inner portion of the plate. He's one of the more aggressive hitters in professional baseball and has an ugly approach with more strikeouts and fewer walks than you would prefer. The swing has considerable length and a 27% K rate in short season A-ball is concerning. The optimistic side of me says a below average hit tool is the best future outcome here, but he's got some work to do to get there. Grade: 30

Power: Big power and exit velos are the name of the game for Breaux, and he's capable of swatting 25-30 homers as a full-time backstop if you ignore the other issues. He will need to improve his plate skills and contact rate to fully maximize his strength. Generates easy loft. Only 44% ground ball rate in last run. Plus power projection, maybe even a tick more than that for raw power but slim chance it optimizes due to a swing-heavy approach. Elbow injury likely takes away some thump here as well. Plus bat speed. Grade: 60

Field: Spent more time as a DH than a catcher due to arm injury. He's quite stiff and doesn't move well. Provides a sold target, but transfer and footwork issues drag down profile and put future behind the plate in question. Ultimately without a huge improvement behind the closed doors that were the 2020 offseason I think he's ticketed for first base/designted hitter and his approach issues can prevent that. Grade: 30

Arm: Has touched 100 on the mound, and would sit 95-98. Raw arm strength is plus but elbow injury and generally poor footwork takes away from throws. Spent more time as the DH rather than catcher due to arm injury. Needs reps. Weak 16% caught stealing rate to his career so far, plus arm held down by other defensive issues. Grade: 55

Run: Not quite bottom of the scale, but close. Giving him the benefit of the doubt as he moves decently while underway. Either way, not a tool to focus on with this profile. Grade: 30

Overall: I have my concerns about Breaux turning into a big league regular behind the plate, and his issues offensively will crush the profile and take him out at the knees before he's able to get off the ground. The power and arm strength are plus, but the supporting tools actively attack his strengths. He needs to develop some patience at the plate, and if he can do that while shortening his swing he can stick as a platoon option at first or designated hitter.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Average frame, solid and athletic. Body is mostly mature. Good movements. Live arm. Average righty.

Mechanics: Moderate effort, high 3/4 to overhand slot. Moves quickly through delivery with pointed movements; Hard leg kick to letters with hands in front of the body at shoulder height. Very similar from the stretch, but more coil. Attacks the hitter as he comes down the mound, but finishes low and balanced.

Fastball: 94-96; Good zip, works high in the zone with it. Straight, but likely some ride here given the arm slot and whiffs at the top of the zone. Around the zone, but lacks command of it and will leave it over the heart or miss in a noncompetitive spot. Grade: 55

Slider: 83-88; Gets both sweep and depth. Manipulates it like 2 different pitches. One is hard and tight like a cutter, the other comes in low 80s but gets much more depth. Falls off the table. Throws the tight version for strikes and buries the bender -- enough difference that you could call it a hard curve. Potential plus pitch. Possible that he tips it, batters don't chase like you would expect Grade: 55

Control and Command: Typical hard thrower who doesn't know where it's going. Misses in bunches and has a tendency to leave it down broadway. Not going to get away with it against MLB hitters. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Average size righty with big stuff, but has ticked down since draft day. Has little command and in concert with the reduced velo, wonder if something is off in mechanics or he has a nagging injury. Current iteration is a low-leverage reliever. If he gets back into the upper 90s with at least a semblance of command, could be a high-leverage arm.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 12, COL
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Wiry and athletic frame. Sturdy and narrow torso with long legs. Strong lower half. Lanky build with room for added weight and muscle. Shows bits of speed and agility around the infield.

Hit: Short and compact right-handed stance. Crouched with extended elbows. Good timing and balance in his swing, stays within the ball. Upper and lower half stay connected to create good extension. Head stays down through contact, solid approach. Solid hit tool with good contact pull side. Quick hands pounce on pitches inside. Takes good hacks on the ball. Patient approach at the plate, stays deep in the count and knows his tendencies. Struggles to make solid contact to all fields. Tendency to swing heavy on off-speed away and up in the zone. Grade: 45

Power: More of a contact-oriented hitter, but showed glimpses of increased power. Creates good extension with extra base-hits to the gaps. Drives the ball pull side, little power to the opposite field. Showed signs of improvement, could improve raw power with more development. Grade: 40

Field: Average infielder with good range and instincts. Contorts his body, makes throws from difficult angles. Average speed to make up ground, good glove-to-hand transfers. May not stick at shortstop long term. Bounced around the infield, could be more suited at second or third base. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength for an infielder. Gets the ball out quickly, but lacks desired velocity. Good accuracy from all three positions, throws remain on target. Makes the necessary throws. Calm and composed, throws aren't rushed. Lack of arm strength could point to a position change. Grade: 50

Run: Average speed with solid quickness and burst out of the box. Aggressive base stealer at times, lacks the top-end speed to steal bags consistently. Doesn't stretch for extra bases. Good glovework makes up for lack of speed defensively. Grade: 50

Overall: A 12th round pick out of UC Irvine in 2019, Koss showed glimpses of potential in his first pro season with the Rockies. His calm approach and ability to make solid contact stand out. He lacks pure raw power, but showed strides of improvement last season. His range and athleticism bodes well for his defensive prowess, though his average speed and arm could translate to second or third base.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 156 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Six feet tall, perhaps a shade under and slender. More slight frame overall, may not add much more strength. Undersized and lacking projection physically.

Mechanics: Higher three quarters arm action, heavy shoulder tilt, and above average extension create a sub-6 foot release point on all of his pitches. Full delivery starts with a side step to an exaggerated leg lift, before a slight pause as he brings the ball from his glove, followed by an explosive jerk forward toward the mound. This springboard delivery adds to his deception while limiting his command. Inconsistent release point and doesn't always repeat his landing spot, some areas to clean up but the operation works.

Fastball: Buzardo's fastball in a case study in having one particular metric analysts look for and others that render that one positive null and void. Buzardo has an average release height of five feet, seven inches. An incredibly low release and a characteristic that's important for fastballs that play well in the upper quadrants. Unfortunately he lacks much raw spin averaging in the 2200 range with a 12:30 tilt, and below average vertical movement of 15.1 inches. His tendency to supinate means he gets a fair amount of gyro spin moving his four-seamer inefficiently to his armside. He has below average velocity for a right handed reliever clocking in at an average four-seam velocity of 91.2 mph. In closing, unless Buzardo can tighten his efficiency or add 4+ mph his fastball won't play against big league hitters. Grade: 40

Curveball: The clear best pitch in Buzardo's arsenal. A bender curveball in-line with his low efficiency profile. High average spin rates of 2800+ rpms, and good velocity at an average of 80 mph. The pitch has a lot of early vertical followed by late dump as it hits the plate. He commands the pitch well and has no issues attacking right handed and left handed batters alike with the pitch. Potential plus offering. Grade: 60

Splitter: Variation of previous changeup, equally as straight with very little horizontal movement or velocity separation from fastball. Not a reliable offering, unknown projection at this point Grade: 20

Control and Command: Classic control over command profile. Strike thrower with little issue finding the zone but will often miss his spots with his fastball. Solid enough for a relief profile, in that he's not wild, and can control his one major league caliber pitch, his curveball. Struggled to develop third pitch or maximize fastball. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A major league ready depth arm, will need improvement to fastball velocity or movement profile to make the jump to below average reliever. One plus offering in the curveball that it might be enough to get him some time with the major league club in 2021. Not much if any projection remaining and went unprotected in the 2019 Rule Five Draft. Threat to be left off the 40 man again.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-8
Weight: 145 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Diminutive, physically immature player in summer of 2019. Plenty of projection remains despite the smaller frame.

Hit: Good feel to hit, strong barrel control and short compact swing. Square to pitcher, hands by ear flap, bat rested on shoulder, minimal load, leg kick trigger with steep bat angle. Makes harder contact than you would expect from a player his size. Still figuring out spin, but controls the inner-half of the plate and shows zone recognition, his smaller zone makes him harder to pitch to. There's a projectable average or better hit tool in Rafaela. Grade: 50

Power: Batting practice was impressive considering size and age at the time of observation. Power to pull-middle, more gap than over the fence, but quick bat speed and short, compact stroke, with an optimal angle will backspin balls to the pull-side. Added strength could boost this grade to average. Despite a good power showing as an 18 year old in the GCL, Rafaela has a ways to go to get to average. Grade: 40

Field: Solid defender with natural infield instincts and polish. Played shortstop, second base, and third base in 2019. Possible utility profile long term settling in as ideally a second baseman for any extended periods. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm, likely not enough to cut it fulltime on the left side of the infield. Grade: 45

Run: Plus runner, quick out the box, heads up awareness on bases, puts pressure on defenders, and can steal. Grade: 60

Overall: A really interesting overall profile, feel to hit, some in game power with remaining strength projection, positional versatility. Ideally a utility player long term, but a name to watch as his body matures.

Overall: Signed as part of the 2020 international class, Garcia is a slick fielding shortstop prospect out of Venezuela. He's got good hands and moves well, showing range and the arm strength necessary to stick at short. He's a plus runner, and should stay that way in the future. The switch-hitter also excels at making contact due to a very short, bat-to-ball oriented swing. Acquired: 2016 Round 10

Physical Description: Slender and wiry frame. Lacks standout physical features. Has added size to his upper and lower half. Good athletic traits, uses his smaller size to his advantage.

Hit: Changed his stance from upright to more crouched from the right side. Hands stay just above the letters and feet stay shoulder width apart. Bent knees and elbows with little bat movement in stance. Feet stay planted with a very subtle leg kick in load. Has quick hands, but struggles to make consistent contact. Flat swing path with prevalent pull-side approach. Swing-and-miss issues have plagued his offensive potential at times. Swing and approach needs polishing for offensive improvement. Grade: 45

Power: Struggles to tap into in-game power. Improved gap-to-gap ability, but lacks consistent over-the-fence power. Very little opposite field power, shows more pull-side pop to left field. Shows signs of improvement, but flat swing path limits raw power. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average fielding ability with good awareness and traits. Has good quickness and athleticism to snag grounders. Crisp glove-to-hand transfers. Makes the routine double 4-6-3 double play with little error. Capable fielder at the major league level. Grade: 55

Arm: Average arm strength that may limit him to second base. Lack of arm strength and accuracy on throws at times. Needs to improve his timing and velocity on throws from second base, limits his defensive ceiling. Grade: 50

Run: Plus-grade speed to steal bags. Has great quickness and burst out of the box. Has the top-end athleticism to stretch for extra bases. Good timing and jump to his base stealing ability. Speed and quickness makes him a constant threat on the basepaths. Grade: 60

Overall: Taylor's athleticism and defensive skills have been on display the past three seasons, but his offensive improvements leave much to be desired. He struggles to make consistent contact and has yet to tap into consistent in-game power. Taylor's limited offensive ceiling limits his overall potential within the organization.

Overall: Beltre has one of the better hit tools in the 2020 international class, as well as one of the most unusual backgrounds. Beltre played his travel ball in the United States, and actually had a baseball scholarship to FIU to fall back on, but the Blue Jays paid him just under $2.4 million. He's a player evaluators are very familiar with and while he lacks the projection typically associated with players his age, his present skills may be amongst the best in this international group. His swing is quick to the ball and the approach is sound. He flashes some power and while he will likely always be hit over power, there's a chance he gets to average pop. He's played all over the infield but probably fits best at second base long term.

Evaluator: Danny Brackman

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall, loose frame. Long limbs with wiry strength. Still room to add more muscle without sacrificing already great athleticism and flexibility.

Delivery & Mechanics: Starts in the middle of the rubber out of both the wind-up and stretch. Utilizes long levers well keeping his front shoulder closed, loading his scaps, creating separation, and generating armspeed. High effort, over the top delivery and drives down the mound slightly towards the 3B line creating some cross-fire action. Shows good mobility, creating above average extension relative to height. Needs to clean up lower half weight transfer and lead-leg block but athleticism is evident in movements.

Fastball: True 4-seam that sits 92-95. Can reach back for 97 in short stints. Good vertical movement with a very flat VAA. Has good spin efficiency and a favorable axis to play at the top of the zone. Plus whiff potential. Good feel for elevating and will live there with the FB. Velo does range on occasion when starting so fixing mechanical issues could see him stay at the upper end of his capabilities. Grade: 60

Curveball: Low-80s with decent depth and a touch of glove-side break. Not a ton of movement in a vacuum though good spin efficiency and axis tunnels with fastball nicely. Can reduce depth to show more of a slider shape. Good feel keeping the CB down and working off the high FB. Fringe average offering currently but capable of playing up. Grade: 45

Changeup: Mid-80s with good fade. Below average feel locating, often struggling with release and missing arm-side, though movement is solid and tunnels well with the FB. Primarily only throws it to LHHs, and even then it's somewhat rare. Could be an average or better offering with improved command. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Has above average ability to spot the FB and CB; below average feel with the CH. Can repeatedly pound the FB up above barrels which is impressive given mechanical deficiencies. Too FB heavy at times and can become predictable in sequencing, though it's definitely his best pitch. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Frasso is a top tier athlete who has tons of development left to go before becoming a finished project. He has clear areas to clean up mechanically, as well as room to continue building his body and arm strength. After spending time both starting and closing in college, there are multiple routes the Blue Jays could go with him. There are plenty of question marks going forward, but Frasso provides an intriguing mold to work with.

Physical Description: Listed at 6-1, 160. Lean body with ample remaining physical projection.

Delivery & Mechanics: Vertical arm slot. Gets down mound well with slightly above-average extension, leading to slightly lower than average release height.

Fastball: Sourced Trackman data has average fastball velocity at 90.5 mph with high raw spin (2455 RPM). As one may expect with vertical arm action and high spin, induces plus vertical action. Grade: 50

Curveball: Sourced Trackman data has average curveball velocity at 79.2 mph with above-average raw spin (2668 RPM). Grade: 50

Control and Command: Frame and athleticism lead to command projection. Didn't issue a walk in 10.1 innings in GCL in 2019, his only stateside experience to date. Control: 50 | Command: 50

Overall: An international signee out of the Netherlands, Robberse has all of 10.1 innings of pro ball. There's very little certainty in the profile because of that, but he's an intriguing low-minors sleeper. Robberse has a lean, projectable frame that should allow him to add velocity in the coming seasons. He threw a ton of strikes in his limited pro time, and his Trackman data (raw spin, low release height, vertical life on the fastball) are promising. If he more consistently sits in the mid-90's as he gets stronger, it could be a plus pitch that drives the profile.

Physical Description: Average height and build, lean wiry strength, svelte build thin hips, sloped shoulders, muscular forearms. A natural athlete, with minimal conditioning concerns.

Hit: Sets up square; bend in knees, but not quite a toilet seat. Leg kick timing mechanism; hands set by shoulder, busy hands pre-load, long grooved swing limits ability to adjust to pitches outside his hot zone. This leads to lots of swing and miss, and his aggressive approach does him feel favors. Smith's saving grace is a knack for hard contact. Grade: 30

Power: While the hit tool is lacking what Smith does possess is plus bat speed. Despite his long path he does a good job of getting around on velocity and has shown the ability to get to his power in game. It plays as only average to possibly a tick above due to his inability to make consistent contact. Smith's carrying tool offensively. Grade: 50

Field: Fringe-average fielder with good actions and range but his hands are inconsistent. Should fit at either third or second with ease and can probably play some outfield if asked to. Fits a future utility profile tools wise. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm with good carry and strength. Able to make the tough throws on the move with a short efficient arm action. Smith's best defensive tool. Grade: 55

Run: Above average home to first times that translate into all facets of his game. He has range in the field that will allow him to stick at shortstop. He has strong instincts as a base runner and gets good jumps on his stolen base attempts. Grade: 55

Overall: Smith has exciting tools, particularly power and speed. He plays a passable shortstop with the tools to slide to other positions within the infield. His lack of feel to hit or approach make his profile difficult to project in a full-time role. He does offer enough value both offensively and defensively to fit into a utility role and have value as a pinch hitter, runner, or defensive replacement. Ultimately unless Smith fixes the holes in his swing or develops a more discerning eye he's likely stunted at a role 40. Was passed over in the Rule Five draft which at 24 and a year of upper-minors experience doesn't bode well for his view within the industry.

Overall: The prize of the Blue Jays 2019 international class, De Castro's smooth defensive actions point to him being a future plus defender at shortstop. He's very thin, and is extremely projectable but lacks present strength. His offense is way behind his defense at the moment, and it will likely always be that way, but he should close the gap as he adds strength while maintaining his quick-twitch athleticism. Overall: The Venezuelan infielder signed with the Jays for $775,000 as part of their 2019 class. The undersized Machado is a switch-hitter whose offensive game is built on making contact, and going pole to pole. There won't be much power to speak of, but his approach is sound and the ingredients are here for an above-average hit tool, maybe even future plus. He's an average to slightly above-average runner with good enough defensive skills to stick at short, although he will defer to another 2019 signee, Rikelvin De Castro at the six. Machado is a good athlete that has an up the middle future, and could develop into an everyday player as he gets stronger.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 8
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong lower half with quick arm. Shows strong athleticism on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Vertical release from a full-windup. Gets down the mound well.

Fastball: 87-89 with strong riding characteristics. Command for the fastball is his best pitch, above average. Shows good feel at the top of the zone. Grade: 55

Curveball: Above average spin characteristics. Pitch has added depth in the last couple years. Needs to show better command for it. Lots of swing and miss potential. Grade: 55

Slider: Slider is a half grade lower than the curveball. Mostly horizontal break. Differentiates itself off the fastball and curveball well. Command still an issue. Grade: 50

Changeup: Still developing feel for the changeup. Command is below average. Lacks depth. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Fastball command is average while the other three pitches struggle to land for strikes at times. Changeup command needs work. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Murray has a lot going for him in terms of pure stuff. His fastball velocity won't below anyone away, but the spin rates he generates are well, well above average. The heater really explodes and has a track record of playing up at the top of the zone. He's got similarly high-spin breaking balls that he's struggled to command, but have the potential to be above average pitches. If the command buoys closer to average, Murray has the arsenal to remain in a starting rotation.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height. Has notably filled out since signing; has thick thighs with new upper body strength. Looks to be close to physically maxed.

Hit: Stands crouched and open. Low in the box. Hands stay high and back. High amount of pre-pitch hand, bat, and left foot movement prior to loading. Keeps his weight on his back foot and has a moderate leg kick toward the pitcher. Wide base at impact. The pre-pitch movement creates some noise in the swing which can lead to his upper and lower body being out of sync. Linear swing that creates line drive contact off that bat, but it is mostly weak contact. Average bat speed. Shows a feel for the strike zone but tends to swing early and often on pitches in and around the zone. He has good pitch recognition for someone his age and has a knack for getting the barrel on the ball. His approach has yet to result in high strikeout rates, but added patience as he moves up the ladder would suit him well. He is also yet to truly impact the ball, but his bat-to-ball skills could push this grade to average in time. Grade: 45

Power: Below-average raw power that plays below that in games. Does a good job with getting the ball off the ground, and has had more fly outs than ground outs in just over 350 minor league at-bats. He is yet to hit a professional home run, which is both indicative of his average bat speed and his approach. Jimenez sits low in his stance but does not create good leverage on the ball. He needs to better utilize his hips to create a more rotational swing. As it stands, he simply tries to put the ball in play. His added muscle may unlock some additional in-game power. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well laterally despite his added bulk. Covers an above-average amount of ground. Stays low and keeps the ball in front of him. Charges the ball when he needs to and can make some difficult plays. Glovework remains unrefined, but he's making progress. Has notable experience at both 2B and SS, and he played a game at 3B in 2019. Can be average at SS and potentially plus at 2B, where the whole package fits best. Grade: 55

Arm: Strong arm that plays at SS and fits even better at 2B. Throws from a low side-arm slot but can reach back for more. Gets the ball out quick and shows a natural ability to throw to both 1B and 2B from SS and 2B. Throws were on target in looks. Grade: 55

Run: No recent times with his added bulk, but he appears to be an average or slightly better straight-line runner. Not a threat to steal. Grade: 50

Overall: Above average runner that clocks plus home to first times, and has hustle on the base paths. However, he's an overly aggressive and below average base stealer running an unimpressive rate of success, despite strong totals. Still a valuable element of his game in both sides of the ball.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Diminutive size at sub-six feet, and a thin slight build. He has some natural strength and has a compact muscular core, lacks much bulk to project power beyond current output.

Hit: Sets up square, hands set by back shoulder, employs moderate leg kick timing mechanism, keeps hands inside leading to short compact stroke. Strong contact hitter that rarely strikes out, patient approach, will take what pitcher gives him and despite his strong contact skills is not afraid to take walks. Contact and approach are plus, but he lacks the quality of contact associated with a plus overall hit tool. Lots of hard ground balls but too many to his pullside, and a fringe number of liners. Will consistently give you a professional at bat but lacks the ability to maximize his natural gifts. Grade: 55

Power: Lacks significant power, most of his extra base hits are to the gaps. Will show the ability to turn on balls on the inner-half, but he lacks the loft to drive balls over the wall. Could be a swing change candidate that adds power in his late-20s. Below average power that will play up due to contact and speed. Grade: 40

Field: Fringe average fielder who's greatest value is in his versatility. Plays a below average shortstop, an average second base, and an fringe average left field. He's played every position on the diamond at some point. Likely to end up utility long term. First step is quick and he has range but his hands are below average and he'll often rush through plays and not take the extra second needed. Grade: 45

Arm: Below average arm that likely moves him off of short entirely. Plays fringe average in a corner outfield spot and at second. Lacks significant zip and carry needed. Grade: 40

Run: Above average runner that clocks plus home to first times, and has hustle on the base paths. However, he's an overly aggressive and below average base stealer running an unimpressive rate of success, despite strong totals. Still a valuable element of his game in both sides of the ball. Grade: 55

Overall: A classic bat first utility profile with versatility around the diamond. It's a contact over power profile and this lack of damage on contact dulls the overall profile some. As his bat will likely not provide enough impact to force his way into the everyday lineup. A valuable bench player for a good team with an ability to fill a variety of roles in a pinch without a significant offensive drop off.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 155 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Below-average height for a pitcher, but is solidly built and heavier than his listed weight. Lacks physical projection. High character kid.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stands upright on the mound. Steps back off the rubber as he begins his windup, reminiscent of Masahiro Tanaka. Uses his lower half, particularly through hip rotation, to generate momentum as he drives off the mound and toward the plate. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Lands softly and only occasionally falls off toward 1B. Clean and loose delivery.

Fastball: Touched 95 and sat 90-93 pre-surgery. Had above-average velocity when he was on, but the pitch itself played down because it was often too straight. The pitch is at its best when he's able to locate it away; when it is paired with even some arm-side run, the pitch is difficult to hit, especially for lefthanders. Often relied on the pitch. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sat 78-81 pre-surgery. Flashed plus and showed good depth when it was at its best. Generated a lot of swing and misses when he located it. Was Pardinho's best secondary pitch and proved it was capable of being an out pitch. Grade: 55

Slider: Sat 81-84, but was thrown infrequently and seemed to be in its rudimentary stages prior to his injury. The pitch showed sweeping action, but also tended to merge into his curveball. It was a fringe-average pitch. Grade: 45

Changeup: Sat 80-83. Showed a feel for the pitch, and, at its best, it looked like his FB out of his hand but with some additional arm-side run. The velocity difference complemented his FB well. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Pardinho was generally around the zone prior to his surgery, and his control was certainly ahead of his command. He tended to miss high with his FB and then often buried his secondary pitches in the dirt. Pardinho walked more batters in 2019 than he previously had, and some of that may have been attributable to his elbow. His arm action is repeatable, and there is hope for improvement as he gets back on the mound. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Pardinho was poised to be a quick-moving teenager prior to injuring his elbow, and is now working his way back from Tommy John's surgery. He flashed above-average stuff, but stood out more for his pitchability and high floor. It's been a year and a half since he's faced live hitters, and the entire package is largely in question. If he comes back throwing the way he did pre-injury, it's a back-end starter's repertoire, as he throws four promising pitches. However, there's added and ascertainable risk. What once seemed like a low-risk profile is now an unknown. He's about a year removed from his surgery and should get on the mound later in the season.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 3
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Stout, square body, reliever type build. Shorter arms and legs, strong but will require maintenance long term

Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup; drop and drive; longer arm action; low 3/4 slot; fast arm; wrapper. Moderate leg kick; pats ball in glove before arm stroke. Slow motion down the hill, moves more deliberate than smooth. Repeats his motion well.

Fastball: Sinker; sits 92-94 mph; touching 96-97 mph at peak. Sharp downward break and run. Bores in on right handers and off the plate to lefties. Lands well to his armside consistently. Bowling ball; generates a significant amount of bad groundball contact. Pairs well with his slider as a contact suppression tool. Not a bat missing pitch. Grade: 50

Curveball: Slow 11-5 breaker, sits 73-76 mph, touching 79 mph at peak. Early downer break with late sweeping tail. Works off the plate to right handed batters as a change of pace pitch from his fastball+slider combination. Third pitch in right-on-right matchups, with good feel for the zone and the ability to land it when needed. Generates groundballs and whiffs, but I'm not sure how the pitch would play with increased usage. Grade: 45

Slider: Above average slider and Palmer's best pitch. Sits 81-83 mph and has been up to 86 mph. Sweepy break and late drop. Misses bats and barrels in bunches. Hardly was touched in 2019 Cape looks. Thrown 30% of the time in any count and against any handedness. Lands low gloveside for consistency. Challenges hitters with the slider when he's in a jam. Grade: 55

Changeup: Average changeup with projection to improve; sits 82-87 mph, up to 89, with late tumble and significant armside run. Mostly used versus left handed batters, but Palmer shows enough confidence to throw it in right on right matchups. Is still mastering the ability to land it off the plate, as it will show more run at times and becomes an easy take. Landing it for a strike with more frequency would ultimately lead to more swings. A majority of contact is weak groundballs. An increase in zone rate would likely lead to a jump in grade. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Fringe average control that has improved over the past 18 months. Shows the ability to consistently land his fastball over the plate, particularly in the lower quadrants driving ground balls, its intended purpose. Slider command is average and he tends to do a great job of hitting his intended target low gloveside, but struggles at times to consistently hit the zone. This can be said for his curveball as well. As for his changeup, his arm speed sells the pitch, but he struggles to land it at the bottom armside of the zone, as the late run and tumble make it a difficult pitch to land on the black. Overall his strike throwing is good enough that he has a chance to start. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: A true four-pitch mix with two distinct breaking balls, and a changeup. His fastball is a groundball driving machine, while his slider gives him a true swing and miss pitch. Progression with his changeup could firmly land Palmer in starter territory but as currently constituted likely ends up in the pen. Make no mistake, he has the chops for high leverage relief and his fastball might play even hotter in short stints. There's still an outside shot of starting and a step forward in control, command, or changeup feel could vault him into a backend rotation role.
