Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 155 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Below-average height for a pitcher, but is solidly built and heavier than his listed weight. Lacks physical projection. High character kid.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stands upright on the mound. Steps back off the rubber as he begins his windup, reminiscent of Masahiro Tanaka. Uses his lower half, particularly through hip rotation, to generate momentum as he drives off the mound and toward the plate. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Lands softly and only occasionally falls off toward 1B. Clean and loose delivery.

Fastball: Touched 95 and sat 90-93 pre-surgery. Had above-average velocity when he was on, but the pitch itself played down because it was often too straight. The pitch is at its best when he's able to locate it away; when it is paired with even some arm-side run, the pitch is difficult to hit, especially for lefthanders. Often relied on the pitch. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sat 78-81 pre-surgery. Flashed plus and showed good depth when it was at its best. Generated a lot of swing and misses when he located it. Was Pardinho's best secondary pitch and proved it was capable of being an out pitch. Grade: 55

Slider: Sat 81-84, but was thrown infrequently and seemed to be in its rudimentary stages prior to his injury. The pitch showed sweeping action, but also tended to merge into his curveball. It was a fringe-average pitch. Grade: 45

Changeup: Sat 80-83. Showed a feel for the pitch, and, at its best, it looked like his FB out of his hand but with some additional arm-side run. The velocity difference complemented his FB well. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Pardinho was generally around the zone prior to his surgery, and his control was certainly ahead of his command. He tended to miss high with his FB and then often buried his secondary pitches in the dirt. Pardinho walked more batters in 2019 than he previously had, and some of that may have been attributable to his elbow. His arm action is repeatable, and there is hope for improvement as he gets back on the mound. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Pardinho was poised to be a quick-moving teenager prior to injuring his elbow, and is now working his way back from Tommy John's surgery. He flashed above-average stuff, but stood out more for his pitchability and high floor. It's been a year and a half since he's faced live hitters, and the entire package is largely in question. If he comes back throwing the way he did pre-injury, it's a back-end starter's repertoire, as he throws four promising pitches. However, there's added and ascertainable risk. What once seemed like a low-risk profile is now an unknown. He's about a year removed from his surgery and should get on the mound later in the season.
