Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 240 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 7
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Giant human. XL frame. Every bit of 6' 4" 230 pound list. Average athleticism. Broad shoulders; long limbs; high waist. Above-average upper body strength; strong forearms; muscular thighs and backside; thick, strong legs. Injury history includes a recent grade two hamstring strain (February, 2021).

Hit: Upright, squared stance; slight bend forms a wide base. Quiet hands sit just above the letters. Quiet pre-load; modest toe tap trigger. Strong hands and quick wrists generate above-average bat speed. Long swing with natural loft. Aggressive approach that sells out for power. Strikes out a ton; allergic to walks. Handles premium velocity well. Exposed often by solid average or better off-speed and breaking balls. Does damage when he does make contact. Hit tool will ultimately influence his role and big league future. Grade: 40

Power: Impressive double-plus raw in BP yields loud towering drives. Hit tool deficiencies lower the in-game power substantially to above-average. A marriage of impressive raw strength and above-average bat speed, Huff's power production will ultimately depend upon whether or not he's able to shore up some of his hit tool deficiencies and make contact on a more consistent basis. Grade: 55

Field: Inconsistent but capable defender behind the dish. Pro instruction and work ethic have yielded significant gains. XL frame helps him present a large quiet target. Calls a good game; appears to adapt to pitchers strengths and weaknesses throughout starts. Shows decently mobility considering his size. Average receiving skills; strong wrists allow for decent framing - occasionally over frames and stabs, especially at balls low in the zone. Footwork and blocking need refinement but are average. Overall, Huff is a solid average defender behind the dish. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm strength; long transfers and occasional errant throws bring the grade down a half tick. Pop times typically in 1.98 to 2.03 range. Grade: 55

Run: Occasional below-average clocks (4.39; 4.41 digs) mostly a well below-average runner. Slow out of the box; lacks an impactful second gear; low top speed. Not station-to-station yet but will likely become a base-clogger. Grade: 30

Overall: Huff's alarming strikeout rate and inability to walk hang additional risk on the profile. There's enough raw power and defensive prowess though to project a solid second-division everyday regular backstop.

Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Boes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, lean, wiry frame; tapered shoulders, long arms, trim and high waist, long legs. Likely 10 lbs below list weight. Back injury in his past. Ample room to fill out. Cousin of journeyman minor leaguer Luis Taveras and seven-year MLB outfielder Willy Taveras. Frame reminds me of former MLB player Alexei Ramirez.

Hit: Athletic setup; square stance but open from the left side, toe-tap timing mechanism; slight crouch and knee bend to form a wide base. Hands above the letters; above-average bat speed generated with quick hands through the zone. Spray approach; passive early in counts, prone to overswing. Gets deep into counts often leading to both walks and strikeouts; gets fooled on offspeed, causing swing and miss or weak contact. Overall, a below-average hit tool at the highest levels. Grade: 40

Power: Below-average power; still generates impressive bat speed considering the frame, but spray approach limits the amount of over-the-fence pop. Needs to sell out to drive the ball; not likely to run into one. Home runs favor the pull field heavily; likely to approach double-digits across a full season long-term; would play well below-average in a corner. Grade: 40

Field: Above-average defender; strong routes and shows enough speed to cut off balls in the gaps, but effort and focus occasionally waver in the grass. Mainly, issues with running down gap-shots and seeing the ball into the glove. Regardless, speed still helps the tool play at the highest levels. Grade: 55

Arm: Solid average arm; good to hit cut-offs but throws tend to lack significant carry. Can get to home on a couple of hops from medium depth. Stays online, will play fine at any spot in the grass. Grade: 50

Run: Double-plus runner; home-to-first times in the 3.98-range. Effortless runner; glides around the bases and in the field, leveraging his long legs to get down the line. Should have no issue amassing 20+ steals across a full season at the highest levels. Grade: 70

Overall: Taveras' carrying tool is his running ability, which pads his hit and field tools. I have concerns about the ceiling of his hit tool, which will affect the role regardless of the rest of his game. That said, his speed makes his reserve/bench floor pretty firm. Overall, a second division regular future remains the most likely outcome for him long-term.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 206 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round CBA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Average height, with a muscular, frame, highlighted by defined shoulders and strong arms. Somewhat unassuming build, but with more twitch and athleticism than you'd expect. Has worked hard to maintain conditioning, improving his physique while at Baylor.

Hit: Sets open; deep bend in knees, hands by ear flap. Minimal load; toe tap, draws hands back, longer swing path, but he gets around quickly, and manipulates barrel well. Discerning eye leads to a tremendous amount of walks and deep counts. Shows the ability to grind out at bats and make pitchers work. Will struggle versus velocity and harder breaking stuff. Mistake hitter. There's some swing and miss due to the length of the swing but he limits his exposure with strong swing decisions. Grade: 50

Power: Doubles over home run power. Does possess the strength and bat speed to flirt with home run royals in the mid-20s at peak. Looks to make hard contact and elevate, with his best contact coming in the form of hard hit flyballs and liners to his pullside. Not enough juice to push for above average power, but it's an element of his game that boosts the overall profile. Grade: 50

Field: Excellent infield actions, smooth transitions and hands. Very strong footwork and natural reads off the bat. Possesses innate instincts for the position. Lacks the range of the elite defenders but his defense is good enough to project him as an above average defender everyday at third. Grade: 55

Arm: Strong throwing arm with good on-line carry, with good accuracy and the ability to make all the throws. His single plus tool, and it plays up his defense at third base. Grade: 60

Run: Below average runner, not a base stealing threat or someone who gains speed underway. Shows solid footwork in the field and does a good job of getting around his range limitations. Grade: 40

Overall: Strong all-around talent with stellar defensive ability at third that should give him a high floor profile. Near-elite on base ability and approach. Has shown developing game power over the last year with more of his raw unlocking in games. Will carry some swing and miss due to the length of his swing but shows the ability to adjust when challenged in different quadrants. The question of just how good Wendzel is comes down to how much he hits. The tools are there and his final college season showed he can be an impact offensive player. Still some questions as to if it will translate to pro-ball.

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Typical body for a SP. Strong, well built. High waisted with long, tapering legs. Long, loose arms. Athletic, good balance and body control. Frame has strength with some room for continued development.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup, drop and drive. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Solid deception due to shoulder tilt and ability to hide ball. Smooth arm path, hides ball well. Above-average extension. Athleticism and fluid motions allow for delivery to be repeated well.

Fastball: Sits 92-95 mph. Can touch 97 mph. Features solid armside running action. Attacks hitters with pitch. Creates good downhill plane when low in the zone. Flashes ability to throw to all four quadrants. Will lose feel for spurts. Has to command pitch, gets hit hard when left over the middle. Concern for frequency of hard hit balls but velo and movement should make for an above-average offer. Grade: 55

Curveball: Best offspeed pitch. Sits 78-82 mph. True 12-6 break with big downward action. Pairs nicely with FB with large velo difference. Shows above-average feel with ability to command the pitch. Has potential to miss bats frequently. Potential plus offering. Grade: 60

Slider: Sits 82-85 mph. Flashes depth with late bite when thrown well. Throws with conviction. Consistency with pitch could improve, will lose bite occasionally. Around zone with pitch. Has wipeout potential, needs more development time. Grade: 50

Changeup: Sits in the mid-80's with fading action. Continues to improve, flashes some feel for the pitch. Lack consistency, needs to continue to develop confidence in the pitch. Below-average command currently. Potential to become average offering with more development. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Shows good pitchability, continues to improve sequencing. Throws all four pitches with confidence. Keeps composure, wants to attack hitters. Lost feel for release point in pro ball debut, improved as season went on. Flashes potential for improved control. Athleticism and clean delivery allow for mechanics to be repeated, maintains throughout game. Needs to develop but should develop into at least average control. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Winn looks like the prototypical SP prospect with four offerings of at least average or better. His fastball has good riding action and can touch 97 mph. Winn will need to continue to improve his ability to command the pitch, but he throws it with confidence and attacks hitters with it. His curveball is easily his best offspeed offering. It features a big 12-6 bend that can get hitters to swing and miss consistently. The slider has flashes potential to be a wipeout pitch, but needs to be thrown with more consistency to reach its full potential. At the very least it should be an average offering. The changeup continues to get better. It has good fading action and should offer at least another average offering. Winn did not display great command or control during his debut season, but he did regain some feel as the season went on. With mechanics that can easily be repeated and an athletic body type, Winn should be able to at least manage average control as he continues to develop. Winn looks like at least a backend SP with the potential to become a #3 starter if the slider reaches its full potential and his command improves.

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Long, chiseled frame. Has really added significant muscle in his upper half since draft day. Very long levers show a ton of remaining projection.

Hit: Carter presents a simple, effective stroke from the left side. Working out of a slightly open stance with an even base, while nearly upright and hands right below the ears preload. Uses a very low hanging leg trigger to begin his swing, hands will drift back and incorporates his lower half well. Above average bat speed in a swing that's surprisingly short to the ball for his long levers. Attacks the ball out front and will rotate well on fastballs. Steep bat path creates easy loft to the pull side and shows ability to work the whole field late in counts. Some reports out of the Alt site said he struggled against breaking balls, but against his first pro competition. Will need to see his approach in the minors to fully see his ceiling with the bat. Grade: 50

Power: Creates easy, pull side loft in his swing, so that allows his above average bat speed impact the ball regularly in BP without selling out. Should grow into a substantial amount of raw power as he continues to fill out his frame and adds more strength. Grade: 55

Field: Fluid movements in the limited looks I saw. Shows ability to track balls down, but lackluster routes at the moment. Has the natural athleticism to stick in the OF. Grade: 45

Arm: Carter shows consistent ability to get carry on the ball with pace behind it. Uses his long frame to get big extension on his throws. A former pitcher and catcher will show great accuracy as well. Grade: 55

Run: Gets a great first step out of the box and will reach top speed quickly due to long legs and stride. Not a burner, but will cover a ton of ground quickly. Grade: 50

Overall: Carter was a surprising pick to most in last year's draft, but you can see what the Rangers fell in love with. A prototype future LH corner outfield with athleticism and potential to grow into a true five tool talent. Drew some of the best praise out of the alt site this past year and has a chance to shoot up boards in 2021.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 203 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Compact muscular frame, broad shoulders, with a strong lower half, shorter arms and legs.

Hit: Sets up open on is front toe, with a deep bend in his knees; hands set by back shoulder. High leg lift trigger closes off front side considerably during load. Quick compact swing with above average bat speed. Shows the ability to handle pitches to all parts of the plate, but feasts on middle in. Walked more than he struck out in the SEC, smart hitter that makes good choices at the plate. Works deep into counts and makes contact in two strike counts. Above-average hit tool. Grade: 55

Power: Above-average game power that plays to primarily his pullside. Shows the ability to get out in front of the ball and drive it with authority. Added more loft to his swing over the last year. Lots of hard line drives and deep flyballs. Fastball hitter that shows the ability to identify mistake pitches. Looking to add more power in pro-ball and has the bat speed and strength to push this grade higher. Grade: 55

Field: Below average range at second, good infield actions and clean hands. Will benefit from positioning at the major league level. Good turns on the double play and shows the ability to not rush through his motions. Physically limited but fundamentally sound. Grade: 45

Arm: Fringe-average arm that is adequate at second base, and could still likely handle third in a pinch. Shows the ability to turn the double play with strong accurate throws under pressure. Accuracy over strength. Grade: 45

Run: Below average runner that is not a stolen base threat. Station to station runner. Lacks range in the field. Grade: 40

Overall: Offensive minded second baseman with the ability to provide steady but unspectacular defense. A strong combination of power, approach, and feel to hit could make him a middle of the order contributor for years. Possible fringe all-star in his best seasons. Due to the lack of tools and defensive value there's pressure on the bat to perform. Not a great athlete, but Foscue gets the most from his profile.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 1, WAS
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, large frame. Prototypical SP build. Long, tapering legs. Fair muscular development. Near full maturity, future strength gains minimal.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup, tall and fall. High 3/4 arm slot with average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Solid deception due to high leg kick and ability to keep ball hidden behind body. Issue with arm timing. Arm lags behind at foot strike. Above-average extension. Delivery repeated fairly well besides arm timing issue.

Fastball: Sits 91-94 mph. Shows ability to run it up to 96 mph. Mixes 2-seam and 4-seam. Solid sinking, arm-side run on 2-seam. Riding life when he climbs the ladder with 4-seam. Ability to get whiffs with both. Commands well to both sides of the plate. Above-average pitch, especially when velocity is up. Grade: 55

Curveball: Sits 78-82 mph. Downer rotation, lots of break. Bite through the zone when on top. Break lacks consistency. Around the zone frequently, but command and feel waver at times. Pitch will back up on him at times. Potential out pitch. Needs to get more comfortable throwing. Has chance to be an above-average offering with improved consistency, currently an average pitch. Grade: 50

Slider: Sits 80-84 mph. Tight rotation with depth and downward bite. Good feel for pitch, comfortable throwing often. Will miss glove side occasionally, rarely misses over the plate. Out pitch with swing and miss ability. Grade: 55

Changeup: Sits 83-87 mph. Features impressive arm-side run at its best. Creates deception with arm speed. Has ability to get chase swings, needs to be in the zone more often. Shows feel for the pitch, needs to throw more often. Potential swing and miss pitch versus LHH. Grade: 50

Control and Command: In the zone frequently with feel for all pitches. Shows flashes of advanced pitchability, sequences and mixes pitches well. Ability to throw fastball to all four quadrants, attacks hitters with it. Nibbles with offspeed at times, gets plenty of chases but could be more aggressive. Command profile suited well for starting role. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Dunning has five pitches that are at least average or better. He shows good pitchability, mixing and sequencing all of them well. He has above-average control and shows the ability to hit majority of his intended spots. His 2-seam fastball has good arm-side tail with the ability to locate it. The 4-seamer has going riding life with the ability to elevate and get whiffs. The slider is his best offspeed pitch. It has good downward bite and he commands it fairly well. The pitch has the ability to get swing and misses not only in the zone but also get chase swings. Dunning's curveball has good vertical break, albeit the movement is slightly inconsistent. The pitch will back up on him at times, but shows potential to be an above average pitch if he can be more consistent with it. His changeup shows good horizontal movement with some arm speed deception. He shows good feel for the pitch and it could be a weapon versus LHH. He needs to throw the pitch more often to become more comfortable, but it is at least an average offering. The variety of quality pitches and the ability to mix them will allow Dunning to fill a backend SP role in a big league rotation.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 214 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong thick build, broad shoulders, muscular lower half, and barrel chested. Strong and physically mature player.

Hit: Sets square; shoulder width base, slight bend in knees. Leg lift trigger, hands stay back, allowing the ball to travel deep before taking compact angular swings. Quick powerful wrists that allow him to drive the ball to the opposite feel with ease. Strong swing decisions, rarely chases and limits his swing and miss. Will struggle with curveballs, but has little issue with sliders and offspeed. Strong contact skills, advanced approach and hard contact. Grade: 60

Power: Plus raw power, that has yet to fully materialize in game. Lots of opposite-center hard contact, that limits overall home run production. Has made adjustments the last year to connect a little earlier, with the goal of unlocking more pullside pop. Jung's advanced hitting approach avoids selling out for power, but it may limit his home run totals. He still possesses raw strength and strong contact skills that could lead to eventual plus power. For now it's a comfortably above-average. Grade: 55

Field: Average at third base, good hands and clean actions, not very rangey, but good first step and natural reads and instincts. Should stick at third base long term with little question but is unlikely to be a standout defender. Grade: 50

Arm: Above average arm, good on-line carry, and the ability to get the ball off quick. Does a good job of staying square even on the move. Grade: 55

Run: Below average runner that can move when underway, but rarely will steal a base. Shows good but not great range at third, but he is agile enough to react quickly Grade: 40

Overall: In many ways Jung presents a prototypical package at third base. A strong bat and sure-handed defender with a strong arm. He takes professional at bats and should maintain a high average and on base due to his approach. He's near ready for the major leagues but should see some seasoning at the alternate site and then AA or AAA for a few months. Likely to debut in 2021, with a likely foothold on the hot corner in Arlington for the foreseeable future.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Lean build, and has build out the frame nicely. There is some room project a little more on the frame. He looks a little bigger than the listed weight.

Mechanics: Standard 3/4 arm slot. Smooth, low effort delivery. Quick arm. Sets up way on the first side of the rubber. Starts windup with the body facing third base. Hands are belt high and rise up to stomach height at the balance point. Back leg drops slightly as extends out. Lands closed. Follow through leg kick is high and he finishes square to the plate.

Fastball: 90-94. Lots of armside run. Some sinking action low in the zone. Plays well lower in the zone where it can create grounders. Not afraid to work it up in the zone, but it becomes very hittable if he doesn't climb the ladder all the way up. Grade: 40

Curveball: 80-83. 1-7 movement. Will use early in the count. It can be lethal when breaking down out of the zone. He controls it well in terms of throwing competitive pitches, but it has a tendency to stay higher in the zone. This pitch could play average if it garnered more consistent whiffs. Grade: 45

Slider: Takes more of a slurvy shape, but it is distinct from his curveball. The depth gives this pitch some swing and miss potential, but it often breaks right over the middle where hitters can do damage to it. It gets frequent use in any situation. Grade: 40

Changeup: 84-85. Lots of fade down. This is his best pitch when executed. Can garner some swing and miss down in the zone. Once he finds the feel, this is specifically used as an out pitch. This pitch could be above average if not for control issues. Grade: 45

Control and Command: He doesn't miss by a ton with lost of wild pitches, but he's still pretty all over the place. Shows better control of his breaking pitches than his fastball or changeup. He can generally get the ball north and south well enough, but east to west is when issues most often arise. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: With more control, there's potential as a starter. Every one of his pitches could see a minimum half grade bump with a little more control. His curveball and changeup both could play, but setting them up and throwing them to the spot they need to go is an issue. He also needs to go deeper into outings, only reaching the fifth inning mark twice in 2019. At present, the control will hold him back but he could fill in a long relief role in a pinch.

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall and imposing figure on the mound. Signs of strength and physical maturity. Long arms and legs fill out his frame. Good size to his lower half with sturdy thighs. Can add more definition and muscle to his upper half.

Mechanics: Whippy arm action from the right side, lacks fundamental mechanics. Short and quick three-quarter slot. Raises glove to the letters with a distinct high leg kick in his windup. Shows signs of effort in delivery. Arm action is quick and deliberate to the plate, doesn't get much extension. Grip it and rip it mentality, shows with lack of command.

Fastball: Mid-90s offering with good velocity. Fastball sits 93-94 and touches 97. Heavily relies on velocity more than spin or late movement. Throws it high in the zone for whiffs. Flashes plus velocity, but lack of consistent spin/movement keeps it at an above-average pitch. Grade: 55

Curveball: Mid-70s curveball that has good break out of the zone. Curveball has tight rotation and spin, good swing-and-miss offering. Pairs well with his fastball in two-strike counts. Pitch lacks consistent depth, needs a bit more refinement to unleash its potential. Grade: 50

Changeup: Low-to-mid 80s offering that lacks consistency as a third pitch. Changeup lacks fade and shape, gets barreled in the zone. Needs more consistency and reps for it to become a viable option in his arsenal. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Delivery concerns plague his command of the zone. Can't seem to locate and throw quality strikes. Pitches bounce in the dirt. Doesn't have a good feel for his arsenal during outings. Relies heavily on his velocity to make up for lack of command. Fits the mold of a reliever. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Aquino comes equipped with some velocity-packed stuff, but his mechanics and lack of command have held him back to this point. As he matures, he must refine his arm action and throw more quality strikes for him to improve on the mound.

Age: 28 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Draft, Round 18, MIA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Long tall and lean, Keller's body is seemingly 80% legs. He uses this to good use, getting excellent extension and more importantly great drive. He has a strong lower half highlighted by muscular quads and glutes. Longer arms but thinner frame up top.

Mechanics: Starts from the stretch, high leg lift nearly to chin as his knee comes to full flexion. He then drops down low striding forward releasing the ball from a high three quarters slot, but a last second snap gives him that extra second to maximize release height. Due to this he gets efficient ride in his fastball despite pedestrian raw spin rates.

Fastball: Sits 92-95 MPH touching 96 mph at its peak. Limited feel and control for the pitch as his above average vertical movement often plays against him. Generates some swings and misses and plays up due to his slot. Squarely an average MLB bullpen fastball. Grade: 50

Curveball: Below average breaking ball in the 80-82 mph range. Slurvy break, with some gyro spin movement. His best swing and miss pitch of the two but much of that has to do with his lack of command of his two pitches. Needs to improve pitch command to play at the MLB level. Grade: 40

Forkball: Poor pitch with limited usage, has thrown three all in 2020 as a pro. Low gloveside plan of attack with high-80s velocity. Plays like a split-changeup but it's a rarely used pitch. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Following four consecutive seasons of strong strike throwing Keller finally broke into the majors with Marlins in 2019. While his struggles to find the zone over his 12 major league innings are easy to see with a search it's an interesting example of what may play in the minors can often be an easy take to the best in the world. While Keller has shown the ability to throw strikes throughout his professional career his command has always lagged making the pitcher work a little harder on his high fastballs. Overall it's a rare full grade difference between his average strike throwing and below average command. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A two-pitch relief profile, that's already had two shots on major league squads. It's an up/down emergency depth profile unless he can improve his breaking ball or live off nothing hit fastballs. It's a low leverage relief ceiling.

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 9
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Prototype of a power right-hander. Good size and overall build on the mound. Sound upper half with broad shoulders. Long, bulky arms and sturdy lower half. Uses his physical traits within delivery. Little room for added size and muscle.

Mechanics: Extended 3/4 slot delivery with solid extension. Arm action is quick and thrown with some effort. Lots of movement within delivery. High right leg kick and sweeping motion from the windup. Looks more comfortable from the stretch. Struggles with command and consistency.

Fastball: Low-to-mid 90s fastball with solid arm-side run. Sits 91-92 and touches 94. Shows signs of late movement and spin, but lacks consistency. Gets a good amount of swing-and-miss against RHB. Grade: 55

Curveball: Low-70s offering that is raw in development. Mixes well with his slider, but has some 12-6 downward break. Lacks consistent depth and movement as a third pitch. Grade: 40

Slider: Low-to-mid 80s slider that shows signs of promise. Lacks eye-opening movement. Has shown improved break and spin, but needs more consistency for more effectiveness. Gets some swing-and-miss for strikeouts. Grade: 45

Control and Command: High-effort delivery that raises concerns about his command. Has enticing raw stuff, but lacks ability to throw strikes consistently. Leaves his fastball and slider up in the zone, gets barreled for homers. Needs to improve command in all facets. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Linginfelter has the size and raw stuff to maximize his potential, but his delivery and struggles with command held him back at Tennessee. He showed the ability to miss bats in 2019, but needs to improve in the Angels' minor league system.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, lean build. Looks heavier than his listed weight. Lower half is filled out, but there might be some room for projection left in the upper body.

Mechanics: 3/4 arm slot with a very loose and whippy arm. There's some effort in the delivery, but there's also some funk. Throws from the first base side of the rubber. Hands start at chest and don't move through the balance point. There is a split second pause at the top of his balance point before he drops his back leg way down and drives out toward the plate. Finishes a little closed off of home plate.

Fastball: 88-90 T92. Slight armside run. Induces a lot of flyballs with this pitch. He likes to work it up in the zone late in counts. It works best when used as a third pitch. It can create some weak contact, but hitters seem to square it up pretty easily. Grade: 40

Curveball: 78-81. 1-7 shape. Sharp break. Likes to use this as a strikeout pitch. He can miss up in the zone with this pitch frequently. There is quite a bit of inconsistency to the extent of vertical movement on the pitch. At it's best, it creates whiffs and could easily be a fringe average, if not average offering. Grade: 45

Changeup: 83-85. Armside fade. His best pitch when he can locate it. Good deception off the fastball. Works it to the bottom third of the zone where it can garner some swing and miss. As with any of his pitches he can lose the zone with it at time. With more command, it might be a plus offering. As it stands, it still could be considered an above average pitch. Grade: 55

Control and Command: He doesn't miss egregiously, but he also isn't much of a strike thrower. More than anything he will miss up in the zone with all of his pitches, and it's most noticeable with the curveball. Oddly enough he'll issue walks or miss over the plate and get hit around before dialing in and showing some decent command. His changeup is generally the most consistent in terms of command, but that offering is still subject to some issues. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Consistency is the biggest detractor for Pina. It seems like every inning starts with a base runner or two, then he'll lock in and strikeout the side. His changeup is a legitimate swing and miss weapon. And in the Midwest League he was getting some ugly swings. His fastball is best used as a compliment to the offspeed, playing the best up in the zone. The curveball is the most perplexing, and likely important, pitch. He'll throw one that looks playable, but then he'll have two that are very hittable with less movement and another one that misses way up in the zone. A pinch more consistency would go a very long way in determining his future.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Draft, Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Broad shoulders. Frame is filled out well considering his age. Maybe some more room for weight, but not a lot.

Hit: Open stance. Feet set slightly wider than shoulder length apart with slight bend in the knees. Hands start at head height. Very small leg lift triggers swing. Hands are quick, but there's length to the swing that will breed swing and miss. The bat path is pure uppercut. Tendency to pull the ball more often than not. Grade: 40

Power: He swings very hard, so when he finds the barrel he'll crush the ball. The raw power is plus, but the whiffs make it hard for that to play out in games. When he does display the power in game it's generally to the pull side, but he's got plenty of potential to have power to all fields. Between the violent hacks and uppercut, he'll be a threat to put the ball over the fence. Grade: 55

Field: Moves well in the outfield. Runs good enough routes. The arm is the carrying tool defensively, but his glove itself is solid. If the Angels develop him as a two-way player he'll likely spend a lot of time at DH. Grade: 45

Arm: Lots of arm strength. He was a two-way prospect pre-draft and that shows through on his throws from the outfield in both strength and accuracy. Grade: 55

Run: Posted below average run times prior to being drafted. Grade: 40

Overall: The Angels announced Rivera as a two-way player when they drafted him. Reportedly, many preferred him on the mound as a lefty arm who touched 95 with his fastball. He has yet to pitch professionally. He exclusively DH'd in his draft year. There's plenty of swing and miss in his game offensively, but with more consistency for barrel his big raw power to show up in game. Defensively he profiles best in right field.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0

Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2020 Draft, Round 5
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Lean, sleek, athletic build, below average pitcher height, but long limbs for height, high waist. High level of conditioning, athletic, similar build to Jose Berrios.

Fastball: Sits 89-92 mph, lacks velocity, sink, most comfortable located low in the zone but shows four quadrant control for pitch. Used early in counts to set up Seminaris' trio of secondaries. Weak contact driver over swing and miss pitch. Plays up due to control and command of the pitch, but still fringe average. Grade: 45

Curveball: Used primarily early in the count, sits 77-79 mph with 1-7 break, showing more downward break than his slider with late tail. Will get swings and misses but it's based more off sequencing than bat missing movement. Grade: 45

Slider: Sits 80-82 mph, heavy bender with horizontal break. Consistently locates to his gloveside, sweeping away from lefties and back footing it to right handers. More of a strike-stealer than a swing and miss pitch. Above average command, capable of throwing it in any count. Lacks the swing and miss qualities of a plus slider, but drives weak contact and lands on target more often than not. Grade: 50

Changeup: Sits 80-81, with late tumble and run, lands consistently low gloveside with late bite. Strong command, best swing miss pitch, rarely taken. Drives poor contact. Above average changeup, with consistent feel. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Plus control, lives in the zone, makes it easy on his catcher, showing the ability to locate all of his secondaries to his intended target in the mitt. Four quadrant command of arsenal plays up below average velocity. Rarely walks batters, if ever. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Seminaris fits the collegiate "West Coast changeup" style to a tee. Showing advanced sequencing, and deep arsenal, but ultimately an pitch mix designed around setting up his changeup and hiding his lackluster fastball velocity. A long history of strike throwing with a advanced feel for the zone, and the ability to throw any pitch in any count. Unfortunately Seminaris is limited by his below average stuff. A command profile that will go as far as his advanced pitchability will take him. Best suited for a depth starter profile, buts its fringe, likely making him more of a high end up and down type.

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Medium frame. Slightly undersized; heavier than listed 165 pounds. Narrow shoulders that slope; modest upper body strength; average core; high waist; strong, thick lower half. Above-average athleticism and foot speed. Minimal physical projection remaining.

Mechanics: Stretch only; drop and drive. High 3/4 arm slot with plus arm speed; high effort delivery. Average stride; below-average extension. Letter high leg kick, arm speed and late exposure create solid deception. Effort level yields inconsistent mechanics: timing and explosion towards plate varies; arm-slot wanders. Foot strike flexed and extremely stiff; inconsistent offline landings: falls hard first base side.

Fastball: Sits 94-96 t98; explodes out of the hand, generating higher perceived velocity. Shows inconsistent but impressive arm-side run. Swing and miss is predominately in the upper third where he shows imposing riding life. Velocity and movement allow him to get away with well below-average command. Grade: 60

Curveball: Power curve; sits 80-83. Inconsistent. Big 11/5 shape; tight rotation with depth and downward bite. Lands it for strikes; can spin it in warmups, but occasionally loses his slot lobbing in the unintended slow rolling cement mixer. Flashes the ability to locate low and take it glove-side; predominantly a spike pitch buried beneath the zone. Legitimate potential big league put-away offering with natural feel; command concerns keep projection far south of its plus potential. Grade: 50

Changeup: Firm off-speed; sits 86-89. Lacks feel; slows arm speed and telegraphs; lots of easy takes and unintentional spikes; thrown almost exclusively to LHB as a wrinkle. Likely scrapped with eventual move to the bullpen. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Raw dart thrower; effectively wild; unpredictability and velo bullies lower level batters; bearish that same production carries over against more patient and advanced big league batters. Well below-average control and near bottom of the scale command. Stuff is powerful enough that he literally just needs to fill the zone more frequently. Misses are abundant: especially glove-side and low, beneath the zone. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: The book on Ortega has always revolved around his ability to miss bats and inability to avoid walks. Should he learn to find the strike zone with more consistency, there's at minimal solid role 40 reliever potential. Ortega is essentially a lottery ticket until the control improves, but his power fastball/curveball combo make him a prospect to monitor next season.

Overall: Guzman is the prize of the Angels 2020 J2 class, signing for $2 million. Guzman is a switch-hitter who projects to be a hit over power type despite his long frame. He has an advanced knowledge of the strikezone and good pull-side power. His strong arm would be an asset on the left side of the infield, but he could also move to right field. As always, there's a far gap between what he is and what he could be, but signing for $2 million means the Angels expect him to be a big league regular or better.

He signed for $600,000 at 17 years old and was placed directly into the Dominican Summer League where he hit .284/.402/.405 in just under 100 PAs. He projects as a bat first player with strong power and on-base skills. Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-2

RuleV: 2022

Overall: Alexander Ramirez has been hidden from the public for going on two years now making up to date reporting difficult to do. He only has DSL experience under his belt. Early footage from just before he signed shows a gangly, long-limbed frame with easy room to fill out in the torso. He lacks ass so the hips and legs are limited in growth. While showcasing for teams it was apparent that power was the appeal here. It's an easy lofted swing with few moving parts and in BP footage he's shown it to all fields. He likes to get extended for the power, too. It's a long trigger as he gears up for swings and that usually raises questions about how he handles velocity. On the field, he is smooth as he glides toward the ball using his long strides. Ramirez had a fringe average arm that needed reps on accuracy to his target. Like many wiry J2 signees, Ramirez has a lot of room for growth in all areas of the game and a debut stateside with a potential Low-A appearance will help inform our understanding much better.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Above-average height. Signed with a slender build and has begun adding muscle to his frame. Heavier than his listed weight. Still offers some physical projection. Athletic. High character.

Hit: Has used several stances during his professional career and still appears uncomfortable in the box. He stands slightly crouched. and keeps his right elbow high and back. Moderate amount of pre-pitch bat movement prior to loading. Present iteration is more balanced pre-pitch than before but he has a noisy load. Uses an unorthodox timing mechanism where his hands work backwards in the load. His upper half is often out of sync with his lower half, which creates a hitch in the swing and hinders his bat speed. Bat speed is inconsistently average and wavers below that when he's out of sync. Struggles with velocity and often fails to make good contact. He gets under the ball with regularity and created a lot of fly outs in 2019. Strikeouts will be an issue until he finds a swing that works for him. In two abbreviated seasons, he's struck out at a 37% clip. He's athletic and has the aptitude to show growth with the tool, but he's notably raw. Grade: 40

Power: Flashes raw power to the pull-side but it mostly manifests itself to the gaps during games. He generates a good amount of leverage and natural lift off the bat, and has already begun getting the ball in the air. His ultimate power output will depend on his ability to consistently barrel the ball. There's average or better power here waiting to be unlocked, but his swing so far restricts it. Grade: 45

Field: Has fluid actions in the field. His speed helps him cover ground and he has close to plus range because of it. Still raw with his reads. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm that plays in all OF positions. Shows good carry from the grass and was on target in limited looks. Grade: 55

Run: Timed 4.30 down the line from the right side. His awkward swing leads to him being slow out of the box, but he's a plus straight-line runner once he hits his stride and demonstrates that once he's on base. He's capable of taking a base but can be slow with his breaks. Grade: 60

Overall: Deveaux is toolsy, but he's incredibly raw with the stick and is the type of prospect that might not make it out of A-ball because of it. On the flipside, he offers enough athleticism and aptitude to suggest he's capable of making the requisite changes. He needs to start with finding a swing that helps him drive the ball. He'll go as far as his bat takes him.
