Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Trevor Hooth

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft, Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Lean build, and has build out the frame nicely. There is some room project a little more on the frame. He looks a little bigger than the listed weight.

Mechanics: Standard 3/4 arm slot. Smooth, low effort delivery. Quick arm. Sets up way on the first side of the rubber. Starts windup with the body facing third base. Hands are belt high and rise up to stomach height at the balance point. Back leg drops slightly as extends out. Lands closed. Follow through leg kick is high and he finishes square to the plate.

Fastball: 90-94. Lots of armside run. Some sinking action low in the zone. Plays well lower in the zone where it can create grounders. Not afraid to work it up in the zone, but it becomes very hittable if he doesn't climb the ladder all the way up. Grade: 40

Curveball: 80-83. 1-7 movement. Will use early in the count. It can be lethal when breaking down out of the zone. He controls it well in terms of throwing competitive pitches, but it has a tendency to stay higher in the zone. This pitch could play average if it garnered more consistent whiffs. Grade: 45

Slider: Takes more of a slurvy shape, but it is distinct from his curveball. The depth gives this pitch some swing and miss potential, but it often breaks right over the middle where hitters can do damage to it. It gets frequent use in any situation. Grade: 40

Changeup: 84-85. Lots of fade down. This is his best pitch when executed. Can garner some swing and miss down in the zone. Once he finds the feel, this is specifically used as an out pitch. This pitch could be above average if not for control issues. Grade: 45

Control and Command: He doesn't miss by a ton with lost of wild pitches, but he's still pretty all over the place. Shows better control of his breaking pitches than his fastball or changeup. He can generally get the ball north and south well enough, but east to west is when issues most often arise. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: With more control, there's potential as a starter. Every one of his pitches could see a minimum half grade bump with a little more control. His curveball and changeup both could play, but setting them up and throwing them to the spot they need to go is an issue. He also needs to go deeper into outings, only reaching the fifth inning mark twice in 2019. At present, the control will hold him back but he could fill in a long relief role in a pinch.
