Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 2
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Listed at 6'4, 225. Good frame; long, muscular build with a little more room for mass in the lower half.

Delivery & Mechanics: Fringe athlete, delivery looks a bit stiff. Shorter arm action than expected for someone this tall- allows him to get his arm up near his head by foot strike. Lack of athleticism more of an issue at release. Struggles to get over front hip and finish pitches glove-side. High 3/4 arm slot with notable head movement at release.

Fastball: Mostly 93-95 MPH as a starter, can get up to 97. Sinker profile, pitch has good arm-side tail but doesn't have the carry at the top of the strike zone that plays for whiffs. Grade: 55

Curveball: Also looked to feature a mid-80's power curve as an occasional fourth pitch. Possibly a variation on his slider but the curveball is a little more north-south. Doesn't have bat-missing action on its own but works as a sporadically used offering to keep opposing hitters off balance. Grade: 45

Slider: Shows a good, vertically oriented slider. Doesn't have much lateral movement but has enough power and bite to get whiffs below the strike zone, particularly against right-handed hitters. Grade: 60

Changeup: Flashes an above-average changeup with good velocity gap and some arm-side fade. Figures to be a developmental focus in pro ball because feel was inconsistent and usage was sporadic at Michigan. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Imprecise fastball location. Has a tendency to miss up and arm-side with the heater. Because the fastball doesn't have great carry, that could lead to authoritative contact against higher-level hitters. Between freshman year as a reliever and shortened junior season, has had somewhat limited reps. That could lead to some late command development (his walk rate improved each year in college) but fringe athleticism that inhibits his ability to work to his glove side probably means he winds up in the bullpen. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Criswell shows mid-rotation stuff on his best days. He backs up a low-mid 90's sinker with a plus slider, and he flashes a deceptive changeup that could mitigate the platoon problems that sinker-slider pitchers tend to face. He'll need to refine the consistency of the secondaries (particularly the changeup) but his pitch mix is rather promising. The bigger obstacle to Criswell emerging as a rotation fixture is command. He's not a very good athlete who ran fairly high walk rates in college. Unless he dramatically improves his ability to locate the fastball, he's probably best suited as a reliever, albeit one with the repertoire depth to work multiple innings effectively.

Age: 20 yr

RuleV: 2021

Overall: The A's signed Paulino for $300,000 out of the Dominican Republic. Paulino was signed as a shortstop but has already slid over to third due to his frame. His defense and raw power are the carrying tools. He has a plus arm and sold hands. The power is immense, and he puts on displays during batting practice but hasn't unlocked it during games yet. He's an extreme risk due to his lack of feel for the zone and inconsistent contact skills.

Overall: Buelvas was part of Oakland's 2018 international class, signing for $100,000 out of Columbia. The undersized outfielder had a strong showing in his stateside debut, hitting .300/.392/.506 as one of the youngest players in the AZL. It's a well rounded skill set but the hit tool does have a shot at becoming plus down the line. He will take his walks and will hit the ball hard consistently. He's also got a shot at sticking in center, and could move a little quicker than expected due to his polish and good baseball feel.

Overall: Pineda was the prize of the A's 2020 free agent class, signing for just under $4 million. Pineda is one of the most explosive athletes in the class with appealing power and speed tools, wrapped in a projectable frame. He has a long swing and will have some swing and miss issues, but his bat speed masks some of those issues currently. He will have enough defensive skills to fit in any outfield spot, and he has the offensive skills to be a strong run producer. Pineda has the raw skills to become one of the better players in this class.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 1
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall, lean, long limbed; wiry strong, twitchy, high level of conditioning. Looks like he can add 15 to 20 pounds of good mass in the coming years. High level athlete.

Hit: Switch-hitter, advanced approach, can border on passive. Swing and approach are stronger from the left side than the right. Similar setup on each side, slightly open stance, front leg starts from toe plant to leg kick, deep bend in his knees, wide extension from base during swing, hands start high. This is where the similarities end between Davidson's lefty and righty swing end. His right handed swing is aggressive with a high level of effort leading to a longer swing path, and subsequently a lack of barrel control. From the left side his movement is more natural, more fluid, free and easy. Leading to a short compact swing that does a good job of staying inside the ball. That said there is absolutely zone miss from both sides of the plate. It's a Jekyll and Hyde strong side platoon switch-hitting profile. Grade: 40

Power: Bat speed, and raw strength lead to plus batting practice raw power. Ability to pull balls over the wall from the left side. Power grade is above average to borderline plus versus right handed pitching. But is below average in game versus left handed pitching as his right handed swing's contact woes sap power. Loft in bat path from the left, more uppercut finish from the right. Some projection to add more in game if right handed hitting improves. Grade: 50

Field: Elite range, and body control, but below average hands present Davidson with a unique conundrum. Despite natural infield actions and twitch, he struggled in many of my looks at short during his amateur career. I will note he looked better in my follow up research, watching around 16 Vermont games during the writing of this report. It's fringe average defense at shortstop long term with the skills to move anywhere on the diamond. Grade: 45

Arm: Above average arm, good online carry and zip, quick release, fairly accurate in terms of throws to first. Shows the athleticism to make smooth throws in the run. Grade: 55

Run: Easy plus speed, flys out of the box and utilizes his speed well on the bases. Above average to plus base stealer, with good range in the field and quick first step. Grade: 60

Overall: A very difficult overall read, as Davidson has a variety of loud tools but a lack of overall substance on either side of the ball. This leads to fundamental questions around his ability to become either a league average hitter or fielder. Conversely, he possesses all the necessary skills to become both or better, leaving his range of outcomes rather wide. He could be a strong side platoon bat with fringy utility defense across the board or an above average regular. There's more risk than the usual college shortstop, putting him in recent company of players like Brady McConnell.

Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-8
Weight: 166 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Short, compact build. Fair muscular development. Live, athletic body. Little room to fill out, not the body type to add much weight or strength.

Hit: Square stance, hands high at the head with a vertical bat. Body upright, legs slightly bent with wide base. Minimal hand load, small leg kick timing mechanism. Very little weight transfer. Average bat speed with linear bat path. Line drive approach, uses the whole field. Good bat to ball skills thanks to exceptional hand eye coordination. Tough with two-strikes. Strike zone awareness improving, needs to lay off FBs up. Shouldn't launch ball, contact approach needed. Grade: 50

Power: Below-average raw power, with well below-average game power. Lacks necessary strength to adequately drive the ball with authority. Power isn't bottom of the scale, but it's fairly close given his build. Future power will be XBH variety, finding gaps and utilizing speed. Grade: 30

Field: Double-Plus defender, makes it look easy. Instinct to make plays apparent. Clean and quick footwork. Impressive range, moves exceptionally well to both sides. Soft hands with a quick transfer. Catches everything, reads hops well. Handles routine plays effortlessly, shows ability to make highlight-reel plays. Gold glove potential. Grade: 70

Arm: Strong, accurate arm with proper throwing mechanics. Carries through the bag. On target. Short, quick release. Exceptional DP turns. Ability to throw from all angles. Executes throws from deep in the hole and while charging the ball. Throws out good runners. Grade: 60

Run: Plus runner. Light on feet. Gets out of the box well with excellent acceleration. Smart runner who takes extra base when he can. Ability to go 1st to 3rd easy. Definite base stealing threat. Grade: 60

Overall: Allen will always be a glove first player. The defensive ability will get him to the big leagues by itself. He makes it look easy with exceptional range, footwork, and hands. He has a lightning quick transfer and is able to make strong throws from all angles accurately. Gold gloves are very much in the question for him. Offensively, he has good bat to ball skills that make him tough with two-strikes and will allow him to spray the ball to all fields. He lacks the ability to drive the ball with authority, but can still collect XBH using his line drive approach and plus speed. Once he's one base, he becomes a stolen base threat. He looks like a guy that you can pencil in at SS everyday who will have a major impact defense and provide some offensive ability.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 1 CBA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Ordinary build. Fair muscular development. Legs more developed than upper body. Athletic body. Some room to fill out and get stronger.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-wind up; tall and fall. 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and minimal effort. Solid deception due to slow, methodical delivery until foot strike then explosive quick action. Smooth, fluid arm swing. Hides ball well behind body. Limited extension with short stride. Fluid and athletic motions allow delivery to be repeated well.

Fastball: Sits 92-94 mph. Can run it up to 95 mph. Does it easily. Riding life with good downward plane. Jumps on hitters. Very consistent. Plus command, rarely misses spot. Ability to throw to both sides of the plate. Gets swing and misses with velocity and location. Plays up due to the plus command of it. Grade: 55

Cutter: Mixes in occasionally. Sits 88-90 mph. Short tilt, bites when gets on top. Looks like slider but with velocity. Good control with average command. Shows feel, but needs reps. Grade: 45

Slider: Sits 80-82 mph. Small, downward tilt with occasional bite. Shows decent feel with ability to get swing and miss. Around the zone frequently. Commands fairly well, occasionally will back up. Potential to be an out pitch. Grade: 45

Changeup: Power change. Sits 87-89 mph. Can touch 90 mph. Good arm side fade, falls off the table late. Ability to get lots of swing and miss, very effective versus RHH. Generates good deception due to arm speed. Locates extremely well, consistently hits spot. Definite out pitch. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Advanced feel for pitches. Simple, repeatable delivery makes hitting spots easy. Around the zone frequently, rarely walks hitters. Exceptional command with FB/CH combo. Works both sides of plate, seldom off target. Control: 70 | Command: 60

Overall: Jeffries control and command has been stellar his entire minor league career. Along with that he has developed a FB/CH combo that is lethal and will drive his success. He has the ability to throw both pitches where he wants and gets a ton of swing and miss with them. The pairing alone should warrant him some success as a big leaguer. He also shows a feel for a fringe-average slider and cutter that need more work, but could turn into average offerings. There is injury history which is concerning and he will have to continue to develop his inning totals. There is enough from the slider to see it developing into an average offering down the line, but even with it being a fringe-average pitch, his command and FB/CH combo is good enough to make him a long term major league starter.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Tall, slender frame. Would be one of the taller shortstops in the big leagues if he sticks there. Quite possibly not done growing either. Really small calves. Carries a good frame with room to add significant weight, but should retain athleticism. Tied for largest signing bonus in 2019 free agent class at $5,100,000.

Hit: Switch-hitter with the same stance from both sides, he starts shoulder width apart with an open stance. His front heel off the ground as his toes dig in. As he starts his swing it's a big leg kick and coil, he gets compact while keeping the hands in a strong hitting position. Swing is geared more for power than contact. He has long levers, and those could be problematic for him as the swing is long. Was consistently late on fastballs, so that's something to check on as he gets into actual games. Grade: 50

Power: Swing aimed towards driving the ball. Gets the barrel on the ball but lacks the present strength to drive the ball with authority consistently. When he stays on his back foot he can drive the ball, but oftentimes he gets caught on his front foot and lacks the strength to create damage. A contact noted that he potentially could have above-average to plus raw as he fills out. Could develop into a star if the power arrives, but I'm not convinced yet. Grade: 45

Field: Has good enough hands and footwork to stick at shortstop long term, only thing that could get in the way of that is his frame. He's already 6'3", and is still growing. He's got a strong arm and is quick enough to cover some ground. Grade: 55

Arm: His arm might be his best tool, it's a plus arm and he can make all the throws. If he has to move to third he will slot in just fine. Strong and accurate, he could even end up throwing harder as he adds strength. Grade: 60

Run: Puason is a plus runner for now but will slow down as he bulks up. He takes such long strides and gets up to top speed very quickly. He's a really good athlete as well. Grade: 60

Overall: Not difficult to see why Puason got $5.1 million from Oakland after being linked to the Braves for so long up until their international troubles. His bat lags behind the rest of his game for now, but he has a chance at becoming an above-average hitter with plus power in addition to being a strong defender. He could be a future middle of the order bat while sticking up the middle, making him a potential franchise player. We aren't there yet, and he's on the must watch list as we get him into competitive games for the first time in 2021.

Evaluator: Mike Kinsela

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 1
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Strong, athletic, well put together build with good strength and high-level athleticism for the catching position. Plus body overall.

Hit: Soderstrom is advanced in his approach and his swing plan, with plus bat speed, a clean path, and overall one of the highest-profile hit tools of the 2020 prep draft class. He covers the plate well and is consistently on time, with hard contact in all directions vs. high quality pitching, including lefthanded arms. There's a ton of upside with the bat here overall. Grade: 60

Power: As he's come into more strength the power has shown up more and more, and the raw power is likely plus at the time of this writing. The swing is more geared for gap-to-gap power and he can turn and burn pull-side, though it's unlikely that he's ever a 30+ home run guy. The realistic outcome is good average/good OBP with 30+ doubles and 20+ home runs. Grade: 55

Field: Soderstrom is a little unrefined behind the plate, yet he's done a nice job getting more athletic and explosive in his lower half but is still behind his offensive skills as a defender. He receives and throws well but lags behind in terms of blocking and other particulars. His athleticism and other tools allow for potential projection at 3rd base or in a corner outfield spot. It's potentially a very versatile defensive profile, but one unlikely to be above average. Grade: 45

Arm: Plus tool, plays behind the plate, from the outfield, and across the infield aiding in the aforementioned potential defensive versatility. True carry with zip out of the hand and a quick release. Grade: 60

Run: Soderstrom has shown above-average speed in his amateur days, though as primarily a catcher it's likely that speed ticks down over time. Regardless, he'll likely be one of the fastest, most athletic catchers in the big leagues should that be his long term defensive home. Grade: 50

Overall: Offense-first profile with high-level hitting tools and some defensive versatility. Should be an above-average big league bat with below-to-fringe average defense in several spots. Regardless, should hit and hit in a big way.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 248 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Round 1
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, intimidating frame at physical projection. Every bit of listed vitals. Sloping shoulders, long arms; thick, strong core. Workhorse lower-half with strong, sturdy thighs and legs. Feet fit for NBA; overall build like a 90's power forward. Played quarterback for his high school football team. Injury history includes Tommy John surgery in April, 2018 and shoulder debridement (cleanup) in September, 2020.

Delivery & Mechanics: Standard lefty 3/4 slot with moderate effort. Stretch-exclusive with plus arm speed; arm path appears to begin hooking back before quickly clawing near the ear. Generates impressive extension and deception from tall, strong frame. Works as far to the first base side of the rubber as possible. Repeats delivery well, although sometimes the arm lags too far behind the body. Finishes on a locked front knee. Surprising athleticism for his size.

Fastball: 95-98 t100 with nasty run in on right-handed batters; heavy usage that is thrown with conviction to any hitter in any count. Movement and velocity generate consistent swings and misses in and out of the zone against lefties and righties both. Inconsistent command; misses trend mostly high or glove side. Overall, a double-plus offering with no development necessary for the pitch to reach projection. Grade: 70

Curveball: Show-me offering at 81-83; modest, 1/7 movement and underutilized within the pitch mix; best when he lives around the bottom of the zone with it. Average potential but needs to be thrown more to realize its ceiling. Grade: 45

Slider: 87-90 with sweeping, late run. Moves it around all four quadrants of the zone; cutter action in the upper third. Lacks the depth necessary to make it a legitimate out pitch, especially in the upper-velocity band, but generates enough horizontal movement to generate swings and misses to warrant a plus grade. Grade: 60

Changeup: Straight change in the same velocity band as the slider; maintains arm speed; compliments fastball well; pitch lacks fade, but has the makings of an average pitch long-term. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Average control and fringy command; fills the zone with all pitches but inconsistent with hitting the glove; the quality of his stuff mitigates most of the misses; sequencing is predictable and fastball-heavy. Walk totals should allow him to start long-term. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: The key for Puk is to stay healthy; he has the stuff and control to stick in the rotation, but multiple arm issues, including TJS and a shoulder debridement, may force him into a relief role. Even as a reliever, though, Puk's high-octane fastball and plus slider should propel him to a high leverage relief role in a bullpen long-term.

Physical Description: Medium frame; average build with above-average athleticism. Average strength in legs and upper body. Talented despite having a rather low baseball IQ. Physically maxed out.

Hit: Open stance; high hands; slightly crouched; wide base. Fringe-average bat speed; noticeable hand hitch; linear bat path. Aggressive approach; free swinger. Noisy swing; lots of unnecessary movement prior to load. Toe tap timing mechanism. Pitch recognition and discipline are major issues. He strikes out a ton and seems allergic to walks. Struggles with velocity up and in and can be exposed by average or better off-speed and breaking balls, especially on the outer third. Made some progress with these deficiencies in 2019, showing promise of a potential fringe-average bat. Realistically the bat probably plays below-average at the big league level. Grade: 40

Power: Solid average raw power in BP, plays significantly down in game due to approach and hit tool deficiencies. Aggressive line drive approach with fringe-average bat speed. Modest over-the-fence in-game pop, most power a result of his above-average speed. Grade: 30

Field: Plus defender. Solid reads off the bat. Route running occasionally becomes adventurous. Athleticism and above-average speed usually mitigates his mistakes. Covers plenty of ground - several highlight reel catches over the years. Great at tracking balls to both sides and coming in on the ball. Occasionally get tested on balls hit over his head. Willing to sacrifice his body for diving catches and impact with the outfield wall. Impact attribute of the profile. Grade: 60

Arm: Plus arm with impressive strength and optimal carry; profiles best in RF; can easily handle CF. Solid accuracy; errors more so an impact of poor judgment than offline or errant throws. Whips some impressive ropes back into the infield gunning down aggressive runners. Grade: 60

Run: Above-average speed down the line. Slow out of the box; quick second gear. Not much of a threat stealing bases; will go first-to-third when opportunity permits though. Aggressive and prone to youthful mistakes - runs into outs. Utilizes speed extremely well on defense. Grade: 55

Overall: You hang your hat on the plus defensive profile and above-average speed. Modest big league future ultimately hinges on the success of the bat. Just minimal gains in the hit tool and there's a solid glove-first bench or short side platoon player. More realistic future is a solid high minors depth piece, capable of occasionally filling in at the big league level.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 194 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 Round 11
RuleV: 2022

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive delivery; fast arm with short claw arm action; over the top slot. Up-tempo delivery, moves fast on the mound, but often gets out of sync with timing due to how fast he moves. Somewhat stiff movement pattern.

Fastball: Shows the ability to ride and run his fastball, good shape, but lacks velocity sitting 89-92 mph. Best command is armside where he can steal strikes and get right handlers to expand. Lacks gloveside feel, best location is the higher armside quadrant. Poor command leads to somewhat scatter shot misses around the strike zone. Fringe average fastball, that could jump into average with a velocity increase. Grade: 45

Curveball: Slow loopy breaking ball sits 73-77 mph; 1-7 shape, more of a contact control pitch than a swing and miss breaking ball. Drives a heavy amount of groundballs. Dangerous when he can land it at the bottom of the zone. Primary secondary versus left hand hitters. Lacks consistent command of the pitch limiting its overall grade. Grade: 45

Changeup: High 70s to low 80s offering, late devastating armside run and tumble. Best swing and miss pitch, dominates versus right handed batters. Rarely used in same side matchups but should be used more frequently. Above average changeup. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Below average control, as Feole struggles to command his fastball and consistently hit his spots and subsequently throw strikes. His up tempo motion betrays him as he'll lose control of his arm and finds trouble landing his fastball to all zones. His feel is better for his secondaries, particularly his curveball which plays up due to his ability to hide it behind his fastball and tunnel to the top and bottom of the zone. Changeup feel is above average, lands it consistently to his armside, getting chases and bad swings. Below average across the board but heavily dragged down by a lack of command of his fastball. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Future relief arm with two fringe or better secondaries. Changeup does a good job of neutralizing right handlers and curveball limits hard contact in same side matchups. Needs to add velocity onto his fastball, as it has good shape and movement but a lack of velo and pinpoint command make it hittable. One or two inning stretches with ramped up velocity could transform Feole into a viable option in a big league pen. With some concerns that range from mechanical to velocity Feole best projects as bullpen depth.

Works at a medium speed often but will speed up his pace of work at times. Will slow down in the stretch. Easy to repeat mechanics.

Fastball: 88-90 mph; can get up to 92-94 mph. Some ride to it; can get flat. Able to attack the zone with it and helps him get back into counts. Able to hit his spots often. Plays well up in the zone and typically attacks players up. Does not give up a lot of hard contact. Can hit the black on both sides of the plate; does not attack low in the zone often with the fastball. Lacks desired velocity. Grade: 50

Curveball: 76 mph Slow, slurvy breaking ball. Appears to get similar arm action behind the curve as he does with the fastball. Throws it with confidence and able to both attack the zone and bury it while inducing swings. Willing to attack the zone and will induce weak contact and miss bats in and out of the zone with it. Can hang the occasional curve but is more likely to miss in the dirt. Complements the fastball well giving him two pitches he can lean on. Grade: 50

Changeup: 81-82 mph. Does not use it often but can throw it against right handers at times. Has some movement and fade to it. Does not have a lot of differential in velocity from the fastball. Would like to see that improve or the movement improve. Utilization is minimal as of now but if he can work on it, it would play well with the fastball and changeup. Grade: 40

Control and Command: More times than not, he keeps it in the zone. Can control and command the fastball and curveball well but will occasionally miss the spots. Able to attack the black of the plate as well. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Injuries caused Hernandez to be limited to two and three inning outings in 2019 and then the 2020 season ultimately has us having a lot of questions about him as we enter 2021. Often said to be a crafty lefty, he did show the ability to keep hitters off balance and induce weak contact a bit. However, the lack of velocity and third pitch leave a lot to be desired here. A lot will be determined if he can add an above average third pitch and velocity.

Evaluator: Danny Brackman

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 20
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Medium compact frame. Thick legs and strong upper body. Very good functional mobility and athleticism.

Delivery & Mechanics: Hybrid wind-up. Medium leg kick into a slight backward lean to keep the trunk stacked and engage the lower half. Sinks deep into hips and moves well downhill. Good power generated but with direction sometimes inconsistent, efficiency could still be improved. High effort delivery though good arm speed and a somewhat atypical 3/4 release point created by the backward lean creates some extra deceptiveness. Repeatability has improved but still needs work.

Fastball: Sits 93-95 and can touch 97 when reaching back in short stints. Typically shows some arm side run that helps generate weak contact. Still plays well up in the zone and is capable of generating some swing and miss. Tunnels well with secondary offerings, especially the change up. Has had troubles with consistency but reportedly has been better after moving to the pen full-time. Grade: 55

Slider: 82-84 with two-plane movement. Good arm speed and quick supination. Shape can flatten out and play like a cutter at times. Release makes spin difficult for hitters to pick up even when the movement is lacking. Does leave it up over the plate frequently looking to steal strikes or generate weak contact, so expanding to the glove side more should be emphasized. Grade: 45

Changeup: 83-85 with really good fade. Keeps good arm speed and shape tunnels with fastball very well. Has good feel for spotting to the arm side. Pitch can play against either RHH and LHH when looking for both weak contact and whiffs. Cleaning up his inconsistent release could result in even better results. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Has shown good pitchability despite slight mechanical inefficiencies. Shows confidence in all three offerings however feel for locating the SL is a bit behind the FB and CH. Stays around the zone but often leaves too many pitches in hittable areas. Allows a lot of contact though stuff does play up in shorter outings. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Knehr has bounced between starting and the pen since going pro, but it appears he's finally settling in as a reliever. The switch is likely to help him conserve his stuff, as it appeared to dwindle late in the season in 2019. He performed well last fall at Instructs, so 2021 will be a critical development year to see how he handles the transition. If he can keep the current trend going, he could give an interesting look as a middle reliever.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Well built, physical prospect. Well developed frame with strength throughout. Big broad shoulders, strong biceps and forearms. Good base, big thighs and rear end. Built like a corner outfielder.

Hit: Swing built off strength and leverage. Looks for his pitch, and made a large approach change as he entered 2019 and it paid off. He doubled his walk rate while also upping the power numbers and slightly chipping away at the strikeout numbers. He struggles making consistent contact, and doesn't have a two-strikes approach. Not saying he needs one, but it's very much a power over hit profile with zero fear of striking out. Works counts, extremely patient hitter with good strikezone judgement. Pitch recognition skills are sound, but just struggles making contact. Overall hit tool is poor, but can be fringe average if you factor in approach. Was hit by an astonishing 32 pitches in 2019, which explains the massive OBP jump. Grade: 30

Power: Sutton's new approach at the plate also led to a jump in balls hit to his pull-side, which is by design. Power is his strong suit in the box and he leaned into that in 2019. Large, uppercut swing allows him to hammer balls low in the zone but he will struggle against the stuff that's up. Plus raw power and is the highlight of batting practice, but plays nowhere close to that level in games because of his swing and miss tendencies. Grade: 45

Field: Sutton is a poor fielder. He's a plus runner which allows him to get to so many balls, but he takes poor angles and doesn't have soft hands in the outfield. He's a future corner outfielder, and I do think he will improve with more reps. Grade: 40

Arm: Above-average arm. Good enough to allow him to play any OF spot. Iron glove pushes him to left. Grade: 55

Run: Plus runner, will play down as he continues to bulk up. Will steal around 10-12 bases in the big leagues. Grade: 60

Overall: Sutton is a really good athlete, physical yet agile, but he will be held back by a subpar hit tool. He's a plus runner with the raw strength to clear any park, Williams-Sutton is a high risk prospect due to the swing and miss, and don't get suckered into the inflated OBP due to an insane 32 HBPs in 2019. He projects as a reserve outfielder, and not one that can play a competent centerfield which raises the offensive bar.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 223 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 3
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Huge, 6'7" frame with a high waist and long limbs. Broad, squared shoulders. Lean and muscled, but borderline skinny. Decent amount of projection left as he adds to upper torso, glutes and thighs. Visibly frustrated when he can't find the release; lets emotions from poor at bat outcomes spill into the next, overthrowing when he's mad and compounding his frustration. TJS in 2015, shoulder inflammation 2017, biceps issues and line drive off leg in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup; big leg kick to the letters, fires from 3/4s arm slot. Works through windup at quick pace. Medium length arm stroke, doesn't quite drop it all the way down behind the body. Fast arm. Decent separation, arm on time and possibly early. Short and quick from the stretch, abbreviated leg kick, rocking back and firing.

Fastball: 94-96, T99; Good ride and run, but inconsistent and gets flat. Gets squared up when it's flat in the zone, hitters jump on it. Runs it by hitters consistently at the top of the zone and induces pop-ups frequently. Goes away from it sometimes like he lacks confidence. Command comes and goes. Grade: 50

Curveball: Big, sharp breaker. Tunnels well with the fastball and mirrors it well, too, hitters struggle to recognize it out of the hand when it's tight - not tight that often. Can drop it in for a strike armside; uses it armside or buries it for chases. Loses feel for it and gets loopy. Grade: 45

Slider: Similar shape as curveball, more depth than sweep. Not a ton of depth, rolls more often than it bites. Thrown mostly gloveside, gets more bad contact than whiffs. Occasionally resembles more of a cutter than slider. Flashes plus, nasty when it's on, just not always on. Grade: 45

Changeup: solid tumble and fade but not consistent. Good armspeed. 4th pitch in both usage and quality. Lacks confidence and feel. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Decent control, typically around the zone with few erratic pitches. Doesn't pound the zone though and falls behind somewhat frequently. Too many first pitch balls. Goes through bouts of living in the zone and living just outside the zone. Command worsens from the stretch. Hitters take a little more easily than you would guess for someone who sits mid to high 90s - he's either tipping pitches or hitters are seeing the ball early. Pitches backward often. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: Big, fireballing righty whose good stuff gets hit harder than you'd expect due to inconsistency and poor command. Everything flashes plus at times, but is hit hard far too often or sails to a noncompetitive location. To add insult to injury, he appears to lose his composure when things go awry which adds to his issues. Reports are that he has scrapped the changeup and dazzled out of the pen during instructs after being added to the 40-man. His ceiling is sky high if he can find some semblance of consistency and command, but it's a big if. With so far to go, it's most likely that he's an up and down guy at this time.

Evaluator: Jake Martin

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame. Physical body with balance of present strength and athleticism. Noticeable fill out between 2018 and 2019. Probably still has some room for additional muscle.

Hit: Slightly open stance with base a wider than shoulder width. Hands start at shoulder height with the barrel tilting diagonally over head, not quite over shoulder. Knees have a lot of bend, weight stays in his toes. Slight leg lift while striding really far towards the pitcher. Bat path is mostly level with a little bit of upward loft. Above-average bat speed. Points his knee at the ball at contact point and continues to move down through contact which adds strength to swing. However, he leans over the plate and strides so far he has no room to move forward, barrel time in the zone is limited causing hard pull side and weak opposite field contact. Not a lot of contact up the middle. Occasional front leg lockout creates the loft in swing, less barrel time in the zone but sells out for additional power. Works the count pretty well, takes the ball well, legs move before hands. Adjusts well to all pitches, hits fastballs the best. What works is his approach at the plate. He could make more contact at the plate; his lean over the plate caused by weight in toes. He also strides extremely far, with no additional room to move forward. Both of these factors result in less barrel time in the zone. Staying more heel-side and keeping the upper body upright while maintaining a narrower base could lead to more contact. Grade: 40

Power: Present strength and physical frame help create a lot of power potential. Probably hits for a lot of power in batting practice, however, that has not translated to the game yet. He occasionally locks out his front leg creating an upward bat path but he does not do it all the time. Even if he did it all the time, his ability to make contact would be severely limited. Ball is hit harder to the pull side but he gets more loft to the opposite field. Current gap-to-gap or XBH power, could transform into a home run hitter with further development. Grade: 40

Field: Present athleticism helps with fielding ability. Average footwork, route taking and jumps. He does not profile to be a gold-glove award winner but he certainly will not be a detriment in the field as it currently stands. Should be an average corner outfielder. Grade: 50

Arm: Has some carry and accuracy with throws. Arm is similar to his fielding ability, does not have a cannon but it's playable in right field. Might profile more as a left fielder with fielding ability and arm, but is certainly passable in right field. Grade: 50

Run: Hustles around the bases. Above-average home to first times. Present athleticism assists in his agility and top speed. The only problem is Ornelas is 6-foot-3 and is only 20. Players like that usually age into more mass which reduces speed. Above-average speed right now but will probably regress once reaching the Major Leagues. Grade: 50

Overall: Ornelas is an extremely tough grade. The potential in the bat is certainly there. He is only 20 years old and possesses a physical frame. His other tools play in the Major Leagues as a corner outfielder if he can develop his hit and power tools. Apparently in 2019, he overhauled his swing to try to hit for more power. It did not translate into any sort of statistical success. It's a tough call on what to do with him developmentally. He had better statistical success in 2017 and 2018, while employing more of a contact approach. But there is so much power potential that he was not developing during those seasons. His plate discipline and approach raise his floor but his future development with the bat is a huge risk. His OFP and role could definitely increase based on his development.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 3
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: High waisted. Long limbs all around. He's at physical maturity with his frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Mechanics are very low effort. High 3/4 delivery. Windup starts with Nix facing third base, hands belt high. Hands raise up to chest in sync with his leg as he reaches the balance point. Back leg has a slight bend as he extends out, shoulders off kilter with the glove shoulder higher than the throwing shoulder during this process. Stays tall through delivery and follow through.

Fastball: 91-93. T95. Slight armside run. Pitch creates plenty of grounders no matter where it is in the zone. Can have trouble spotting it down, though it plays well enough up in the zone where that doesn't hurt him. If it missed more bats, it could jump as high as a full grade, but as is it is a fringe average offering. Grade: 45

Curveball: 76-77. Tight 12-6 break. The break looked much tighter than what he showed during his MLB debut in 2018. It became an offering he felt comfortable going to in two strike situations. It still doesn't create many whiffs because he likes to work up with all his pitches. However, low in the zone it's a weapon. Grade: 45

Slider: 82-83. When thrown well there's more gyro than sweep. Either way, it's not a pitch that gets used often. More of a change of pace offering. It's not an offering that fools many hitters, but he also struggles to throw it for a strike. Grade: 40

Changeup: 80-81. Lots of armside fade. This was his out pitch in the majors for a good reason. Between the movement and this deception, this has been the best weapon Nix has. He locates this the best of his pitches, but even misses can generate whiffs or weak ground ball contact. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Nix doesn't walk many batters and all four of his pitches are generally around the zone. His control is above average. While the walk numbers are low, the command is not as you'd expect. He has trouble getting his pitches to the lower half of the zone. Because of that his arsenal can miss right over the middle more often than he'd like and he becomes hittable. Even though he works up, which itself is not a bad thing, he still is able to create plenty of groundballs. Control: 55 | Command: 45

Overall: Nix has seen the majors, but has also seen his share of injury concerns. Since being drafted in 2015 he's only eclipsed the 100 inning mark once, when he threw 105 innings in 2016. He controls his 4-pitch arsenal well, and has seen improvements to it since his time in the majors in 2018. He works up in the zone with all of his pitches, and it works for him to create a lot of grounders. He does have a tendency to miss in locations that can hurt him. He's got the repertoire and build to be in the rotation, but a stacked Padres rotation and farm means he might need to move to the bullpen.

RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Short and big-bodied frame on the mound. Large upper and lower half with room for physical development. Arms and shoulders lack standout features. Comes equipped with power stuff.

Delivery & Mechanics: Shortened three-quarter slot delivery from the right side. Good extension and follow through. Signs of moderate effort. Has a good rhythm and motion in arm action and delivery. Comfortable release point that is repeated fairly decently.

Fastball: Power mid-90s offering with more velocity than movement. Fastball sits 93-94 and touches 97. Commands it well low in the zone with good velocity. Lacks consistent spin and late movement. Potential plus-pitch with added movement Grade: 55

Curveball: Mid-70s breaking ball with great 12-6 movement and depth. Forces whiffs consistently with late break. Rarely left hanging in the zone, tight and compact rotation throughout. Buries it low and inside against lefties. Manipulates it well off his fastball. Grade: 60

Changeup: Low-80s changeup that is behind in development as a consistent third pitch. Sits 81-82 with good drop off in velocity. Lacks fade and tumble without much swing-and-miss. Needs more refinement and consistency. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Shows continued growth in strike-throwing ability each season. Pounds the zone with his fastball. Spots his curveball low and away against lefties and righties. Gets out of jams with solid pitch placement to force soft contact. Has swing-and-miss caliber stuff, improved command would take his arsenal to the next level Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Contreras has shown tremendous strides in this stage of his career. His fastball and curveball are an effective 1-2 punch along with a developing changeup. His command continues to improve by each season, and he's a name to keep an eye on within the Padres' system.

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2012 IFA (NYY)
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Average height and build. Thick, strong lower half; noticeably filled out over the last few seasons. Athletic player who plays with obvious love for the game and aggressiveness. Fun to watch.

Hit: Stands open and crouched with his hands high and back. Minimal pre-pitch movement with the bat. Slight repositioning of his left foot for timing purposes that sometimes manifests as a small leg kick. Upward swing that gets the ball in the air and generates a lot of line-drive contact to the medium parts of the outfield. Repeatable swing that he's opened up slightly since moving on from the Yankees; at its best it is short and gets through the zone quickly. Above-average bat speed that produced an average EV of 93.5 and max EV of 108.8 in limited plate appearances during the 2020 season. Shows a fringe-average eye, but he has an aggressive, free-swinging approach and will struggle with strikeouts at the MLB level. Displays a lot of pull-side contact, but has started shooting balls to centerfield more frequently. He's a below-average contact hitter, largely due to his free-swinging nature, but the tool plays up due to his 80-grade speed. Added patience and pitch recognition would go a long way to improving the tool, but he's 25 and yet to make those adjustments. Grade: 40

Power: Above-average raw power, primarily to the pull side, that began showing up more regularly during games in 2019. Swings on an upward plane and his approach is designed to put balls in the air; he's consistently recorded more fly outs than ground outs since entering pro ball and had an average launch angle of 28.5 degrees in limited at-bats in 2020. His EV would be in the upper quartile if he had enough at-bats to qualify. His aggressive approach hinders his power output, and most of his batted balls are still to the shallow and medium parts of the grass, but his speed will allow him to be a high doubles and triples hitter with regular at-bats. He could hit a dozen or more HR. Grade: 45

Field: Fluid athlete in the field that has familiarity with 2B, SS, and OF. Best asset is his speed, which allows him to cover a lot of ground; has plus range in both the infield and outfield. In the infield, he moves well laterally and looks comfortable at both 2B and SS. Plays with bounce and shows a willingness to charge the ball and lay out in either direction. He's still green in the outfield, and needs to work specifically on his routes and reads; both are currently below to fringe-average. As with every other facet of his game, he's aggressive and can make some difficult plays. He's probably an average fielder wherever he ends up, but has some additional upside due to his footspeed and overall athleticism. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm strength; strong enough to make jump throws from deep in the hole, but they were on a bounce - albeit on target - in looks. He routinely hit his cutoff in limited looks in the outfield. Arm may fit best at 2B and LF. Grade: 55

Run: Timed 3.98 down the line from the right side, which is off the charts. Consistently between 4.01 and 4.05. Legitimate stolen base threat with a track record to prove it. Sprint speed measured at 29.0 ft/s, which placed him in the 95th percentile among MLB players in 2020. Shows strong jumps on the basepaths, but can be overly-aggressive and gets caught too often for someone with his speed. Grade: 80

Overall: Mateo has seemingly been around forever and finally cracked the big leagues in 2020. He offers some of the best speed in the game, which will be enough to keep him around for a long time, but the rest of the profile lags behind. He's a free-swinger who will struggle to consistently make contact, and his power also comes at the expense of his hit tool. He figures to offer some utility/defensive replacement value given his familiarity with multiple positions, but the majority of his value lies with his legs, where he can be an asset as a pinch runner. He was once a prized prospect, and he'll always offer those glimpses of something more.
