Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA (WAS)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Short, stout build, below average conditioning. Bad body, but not out of the ordinary for a reliever. Suffered an elbow injury in August if 2019, underwent Tommy John Surgery in Fall 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; long arm action; high 3/4 slot; below average arm speed; high leg lift; average leg block will leak over front side. Repeats fairly well, moderate effort.

Fastball: 92-95 MPH, throws two variations, sinker and four-seam. Four-seam is a bad-flat fastball lacking life or much ride. Throws the four-seam mostly to right handers mixing in the two seam to lefties. The four-seam is hittable and his control over command profile leads to lots of missed spots that catch too much of the plate. Lacks the ride to play the X or the run to play the Y game. Fringe average fastball despite above average starter velocity. Grade: 45

Curveball: Average slow bender used early in the counts and as an offspeed pitch from his fastball-slider to left handed batters. Site 72-74 mph with late vertical drop that keeps hitters off balance. The pitch plays up due to his ability to sequence. Grade: 50

Slider: Above average slider that tunnels well off his fastball, with tight gyro spin. Little to no horizontal movement, mostly tight spin at 83-85 mph with late drop. Shows the ability to land the pitch anywhere in the zone. Generates a high amount of swings and misses and is his lead pitch. Will occasionally spike it for more devastating late life. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Average control with fringe average command. Executes a game plan in terms of his slider and curveball location mixing in his fastball. He throws consistent strikes with all three pitches and tends to stay around the zone with little trouble. Lacks command of his fastball and it lags behind the feel for his two breaking balls subsequently. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: After suffering an elbow injury not long after his major league debut, Avila has been on the shelf for over a year and a half and is around 18 months removed from Tommy John Surgery. He was a non roster invitee to spring training this year with an opportunity to see some time as a spot starter. Ultimately this is where his ultimate role lies. A spot starter/long relief type that can change eye levels with his slider and tunnel it off his fastball. There's a finesse element to Avila's plan of attack despite above average velocity. Classic swingman type.

Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Danny Brackman

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 221 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 8
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Medium athletic build. Strong lower half and core. Broad shoulders with upper body filled out well.

Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only. Comes set with his back leg slightly pre-set. High and tight leg-kick sinks him deep into his hips and heel connection/ankle mobility allows him to ride down the mound to create separation. Strong frame and an efficient high effort delivery generate good power. Quick over the top arm action, low release height, and big extension helps stuff play. Looks a bit clunky at times though mechanical sequencing is typically clean.

Fastball: Sits 91-94 and tops 97. Looked like he was closer to the top of that range this past winter for Escogido. Plus raw spin. Delivery and release helps lower VAA (vertical approach angle), making it play very well at the top of the zone. Generates lots of whiffs, though it will cut at times and get hit hard when it's down over the plate, especially when the velo is in the 91-92 range. Advanced metrics and results alike suggest it's an above average offering with a little room for improvement by minimizing cut/sustaining velo. Grade: 55

Slider: High spin offering at 81-83. Very good depth with a bit of glove-side movement. Works nicely at the bottom of the zone tunneling off the high fastball. Does leave it up in hittable areas but spin and movement have helped limit damage and generate weak contact so far. Another above average offering potentially capable of more with better command. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Average control but command is often a full grade lower. Could be due to the cut on the fastball and high spin on the slider. Likes to work over the plate and let his stuff go but could benefit from expanding up/down more. Will use either offering in any situation. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Wilson looked really good in the DR over the winter, taking over the closer role and shining with his fastball/slider combo. He was able to maintain his whiff rates while keeping free passes to a minimum, expanding on his solid 2019 campaign where he reached Triple-A. With plus spin and movement on both offerings, as well as improving feel, Wilson looks like he could be a serviceable option for the Padres' pen in the very near future.

Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 219 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 5
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average pitchers build. Stockier, solid, fully filled out frame. Physically mature. Strong, thicker lower half. Sturdy enough to handle ML starters innings. Builds reminiscent of Bryan Shaw. College punter before focusing on baseball his senior year. Solid athlete.

Delivery & Mechanics: Tilted start from near middle side of rubber. MIdsection high leg kick into his motion. Stays well balanced and stacked over the middle. Gets into lower half well to create good hip hinge. Internal rotation and good lead leg block. Long arm swing rotates up and around. Generally solid hip/shoulder separation. Appears somewhat stiff in overall actions in his gather and lower half, and not flexible or loose. 3/4 arm slot. Loses release point at time and will occasionally fall off to first base side.

Fastball: 89-94 with late arm-side run and rise. More effective used up in the zone. Better at locating it north/south than east/west. Fringe-average command. Hittable when left in the zone. Grade: 40

Curveball: 79-83 with downward spike movement. Flashes average; tends to favor slider but has discernable shape from it. Grade: 45

Slider: 82-87 with inconsistent shape at times. Has late, two-plane break at times and will look appear like a cutter at times with less vertical break. Potential to be an above average offering with good spin and more consistency. Grade: 50

Changeup: 81-85 with good, vertical fade. Flashes average, occasionally with some arm side run and others more fade. Puts it together occasionally and can miss bats and keep left handers honest. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Has a loose arm, but long arm swing and some stiffness in delivery creates issues repeating it. Inconsistent control and command. Control is good for a pitcher with his level of inexperience to baseball and pitching-only but relief command so far. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: For how new Bachar still is to pitching, he shows good secondaries that can get hitters out. He lacks some flexibility in his delivery and repeating which looks like it hinders his command. He shows a good, live and loose arm. He has the body type to hold up to starters inning and flashes all average to above average secondaries that could be part of a backend starters arsenal, but he could get a tick up on his fastball and slider in a bullpen role where his command would be less of an issue and his fastball could see a jump into average to above average velocity.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height. Lean frame. Quick-twitch athlete. Fun to watch in the field and in the box.

Hit: Debuted a new swing during 2019 and carried it into 2020 Spring Training. Stands upright, legs shoulder-width apart. Bat stays vertical, hands at his chest prior to loading. Big leg kick as he steps into the pitch. Looks more comfortable and stance allows him to get to the ball quicker at its best. He can be out of sync at times. He has above-average bat speed and an upward bat path that produces fly balls to the grass. Aggressive at the plate; free swinger that strikes out far too often. Has stuck out over 30% across three minor league seasons. Pitch recognition remains a weakness but he can crush mistakes. Gets the ball in the air with regularity when he connects and has so far produced more flyouts than groundouts. Has the speed to beat out grounders to the left side. Grade: 40

Power: Average or better raw power, primarily to the pull side. Gets the ball in the air during games because of the bat path and started turning doubles into HR during the 2019 season. Still mostly a gap hitter, but offers additional projection as he continues to add strength and bulk. Has a quick bat and already creates a good amount of leverage. Grade: 45

Field: Has experience with both SS and 2B. Has good footwork and moves well laterally. Twitchy in the field and can get to a lot of balls. Has above-average or better range. Does a good job covering the bag while playing 2B and can turn the double play. Tracks fly balls well and could potentially play in the OF. Could be a plus defender at the keystone. Grade: 55

Arm: Above-average arm strength, but it plays up because of his quick and fluid transfers. Enough arm strength to get the ball across the diamond, but it might fit best at 2B, where he's starting to look like a natural. Throws from a sidearm slot when making the routine throw, but can reach back for more. Grade: 55

Run: Timed between 4.08 and 4.13 down the line from the right side. Legitimate base stealing threat, but can be overly aggressive on the basepaths. Can turn a double into a triple. Grade: 70

Overall: Barley went undrafted in the most recent Rule V draft, but he has the underlying tools and athleticism to be a future big leaguer. He's notably raw at the plate, and will be a slow burn as a prospect, but he has the look of a utility-type and enough tools to always suggest he could be something more. Even as a utility-type, it's a high-risk profile, primarily because time and the organization's depth are working against him.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Short and stocky with a thick lower half, built like a running back.

Hit: Crouched stance where the bat starts behind the head. He is short and quick to the ball with a linear bat-path, and is looking to put the ball in play and wear out the gaps. He has an average understanding of the strike-zone, is average at recognizing pitches out of the hand, and he doesn't swing out of the zone very often. Because of his linear bat-path most of his hits are results of line-drives that he hit in either the left-field or right-field gaps. Grade: 50

Power: When you factor in his bat path and his lack of upper body strength you realize that he doesn't hit the ball overwhelmingly hard. He doesn't lift the ball very often either so that limits the home run potential as he currently plays. Grade: 40

Field: Rosario has played a few different positions, mostly fluctuating between second and third. He has the range to play third occasionally but the arm is slightly lacking, but he could play third occasionally. As a second-baseman he has more than enough range, is average around the bag, and can be moved around and make the requisite plays. Grade: 45

Arm: Average arm, he makes all the throws you would want from a second-base/occasional third-baseman. It is an accurate arm with average carry. Grade: 50

Run: Rosario underway is an average runner, he has a good jump as a base stealer but his foot-speed is just average. He has a short and choppy stride. He is a smart base runner who will go and take the extra base when given the opportunity. I do think as he adds more muscle to his frame he will slow down as a runner. Grade: 50

Overall: Rosario can play a few different spots, I think he could handle a corner outfield spot in a pinch, who projects out as an average hitter with average speed. He has no true standout tool, but a bunch of 50's should give him a possible bench player role, albeit a low-end one. If he ever taps into more power, he becomes a more interesting player.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Round 4
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Heavy set, boxy reliever body, barrel chested, will need a fair amount of conditioning to maintain average fitness level.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive; long arm action; over the top arm slot; average arm speed; high leg lift; good extension; gets downhill quick.

Fastball: Sits 90-93 mph, touching 94 mph at peak. Lives in the upper quadrants and it's good shape and ride allow him to miss bats with consistency despite below average velocity. Uses his fastball nearly 70% of the time and still manages to miss ungodly numbers with that pitch in particular. Lives around the zone and shows the ability to land it both arm and gloveside. Rarely works in the lower quadrants. Often his fastball and not his hammer curve is used as his out pitch. It's an above average fastball that could really play with a few added ticks in a pen role. Grade: 55

Curveball: Average curveball with big 12-6 downer drop. Sits 77-81 mph with late steep movement that generates lots of swings low. Tunnels well off of fastball and helps to change eye levels on hitters. Grade: 50

Changeup: Below average pitch with flashes of average but it's rarely used and he lacks feel for pronating with consistency. Sits 80-83 mph, and will show tumble and fade when he's able to turn it over. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average strike thrower that does a good job of getting all of his pitches particularly his fastball over the plate. He will struggle to land his changeup, and his curveball's dynamic drop will lead to takes against more passive batters. Overall he sequences well with his fastball and curveball, and executes in the intended zones. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: A three year starter at Troy he dominated during the shortened 2020 season, taking on teams like Florida, Louisiana, and Michigan State and looking every bit an SEC ace. It's a reliever profile suited for three to five outs with a fastball heavy one-two combo with his curveball. He could throw his curveball more if desired as it has excellent shape and he commands it well to the bottom or just below the zone. Lacks the physicality or pitch mix of a starter, but will need to add a few ticks to vaunt himself into a high leverage role.

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 235 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Ona is on the stockier side at 6-0 235 pounds. Well filled out lower half with thick arms. Very stocky, built like a fire hydrant.

Hit: Ona comes up to the plate with one thing on his mind and that's to take aggressive hacks early and often. He has a simple pre-pitch setup where he has a slight bend at the knee and starts with his bat perpendicular to the ground. He has a very pull-heavy approach and he pairs that with an uppercut bat-path. He is rather aggressive and that leads to swing and misses on pitches in the zone, and another concerning aspect of his game is he also expands the zone especially on breaking pitches spotted low and away. He has shown an ability to draw a walk because he has an average understanding of the strike-zone but he does struggle to recognize spin out of the pitcher's hand and in his short big league stint pitchers were able to exploit this with good breaking balls that start low in the zone and break out of the zone. Grade: 40

Power: Ona has plus raw power thanks to his combination of bat-speed, plus raw strength, and his uppercut swing path, and from time to time he translates that raw power into games. He easily accesses that power to his pull-side. His lack of consistent contact will hamper how much power he plays with in games. Grade: 55

Field: Ona is rather limited defensively and that hurts the overall profile. He isn't the most athletic nor does he have exceptional range. He doesn't make the greatest reads off the bat either, he is limited to a corner outfield spot and even then it's more than likely he is best used as a left-fielder. The arm is going to help him provide some value on the defensive end. Grade: 45

Arm: The Padre's farmhand has an above arm and for the most part makes accurate throws. He has more than enough carry and velocity on his throws to play a corner outfield spot. Grade: 55

Run: Jorge Ona is a lumbering runner with a short and choppy stride. He isn't a great athlete either so he's not very explosive either out of the box or on the basepaths. He won't be much of a stolen base threat. Grade: 40

Overall: orge Ona has already made the big leagues and to continue to stay as a major leaguer I believe he will have to consistently tap into his power. He is limited defensively, and isn't a great athlete so that hurts the way in which he can impact a roster. He profiles best as a pinch-hitter that occasionally gets a shot to play left-field to give the starters a rest.

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2020 Round 5
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Tall, very projectable frame to Haynes' body. Broad shoulders, long limbs, high waisted. Athletic body. Fairly unknown and under the radar selection by the Padres in the 2020 draft. Plenty of muscle to add to frame, has worked out with fellow Padres farmhand Seth Frankoff.

Delivery & Mechanics: Athletic delivery triggered by a high leg kick. Pitches from third base side of the rubber and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. Relatively clean delivery with a longer arm action. Has good scap retraction, likely to add plenty of velocity in the future. Release height can get inconsistent at times, though hovers under 6 feet.

Fastball: Haynes was never a hard thrower in high school, usually sitting in the high-80's with the occasional low-90's trickling in starts at times. However, he's shown improved velocity in 2020, reaching up to 93 and 94 MPH respectively. The velocity band still is gaudy, though he's been more in the low-90's in bullpen sessions. It's a low-spin offering around 2,100 RPM's with good run on the fastball and good spin efficiency. Definitely has plenty of room to add velocity as he adds muscle to his frame. Expect an upgrade to AA or even plus with more velocity, but for right now, it's average. Grade: 50

Changeup: Haynes' change-up has good separation from the fastball and he's able to maintain a good arm speed to sell the pitch with some good fade. It's a high-70's offering and has gotten into the low-80's at times. Certainly has some promise to it, though it's a fringe-average offering at the moment. Grade: 45

Slurve: As of now, Haynes has more of a slurvy breaking ball that sits in the high-70's with sweep. A pitch that will certainly need to be tightened up, it has shown more of a slider shape to it in recent months and will likely become more of one as he progresses through the minors. Likely to be an average offering at the present projection, could become better. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Haynes will certainly have enough time to get better control/command, potentially growing into potentially average or better once all is said and done. As of now, it's more fringy, if anything. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Haynes is still a long way from the majors, being the youngest arm taken in this year's class. The Padres think he's a steal, in which time will tell on that front. He certainly has the frame to add plenty of muscle and velocity, with control and command to follow. He could become a backend starter, though right now, he's likely to be more of a spot starter and a long reliever.

Reports say he seems to be more advanced as a pitcher, with some pitchability and the potential for three average offerings. The fastball current straddles 90, but there's a chance it ticks up as he gets stronger. As a hitter he lacks a true standout tool, much like on the mound. The undersized left-hander lives in the 80s with the fastball, touching 89 with the ability to spot the fastball inside and out. His big 12-to-6 curveball plays well off of that and projects as a plus pitch down the line and as he adds mass and velocity. He will mix in an average changeup as well. Overall: The Padres signed the Venezuelan righty for $700,000, which made him the top arm in their 2019 class. Medina already can get the heater into the mid-90s, and should be able to pop higher than that as he adds strength to his already sturdy frame. Medina is a good athlete that repeats his delivery very well, and reports out of instructs were encouraging about the young righty, but reports on his velo had him more in the low-90s. In addition to his fastball he also throws a slider and a changeup from a near over the top arm slot. He has a future as a potential mid-rotation arm or backend reliever.

Overall: Acosta was the centerpiece of the Padres 2020 international class, signing for just under $2 million. The Dominican teenager is known for his defensive skills, flashing good hands, feet and arm strength at the most important position on the infield. The switch-hitter will stick at short but has some inconsistencies on offense. His strongest offensive skill is his ability to put the bat on the ball, and should grow into some power as he ages.

Acquired: 2015 IFA (KC)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height, thin wiry build with solid projection remaining. Boxy shoulders, short torso, with high waist and long legs.

Hit: Sets up square; deep knee bend, near toilet seat pre-pitch; hands set at moderate height behind back shoulder. Busy hands pre-load, moderate leg kick, good bat speed. Poor swing decisions, with bad late takes in two-strike counts and early aggressive swings. His actual swing path is good, and he shows the ability to adeptly drive pitches on the outer and inner halves of the strike zone. As with much of Ruiz's game, his aggression and lack of instincts negate his raw abilities. Grade: 40

Power: Plus bat speed and an optimized swing path and bat angle at the point of contact allow Ruiz to pack a punch despite only average size and strength on physical appearance alone. This is power driven by twitch which gives cause for optimism around his future power production. Power plays beyond his recent power numbers. Average game power, with the ability to unlock more should he improve his approach. Grade: 50

Field: Poor fielder with major questions around where he ends up long term. Throughout his professional career Ruiz has spent time at second, third, and left field, the latter of which most likely his final home. An extreme lack of instincts and poor hands really hinder Ruiz's ability to be even a fringe defender at any position at the MLB level. Likely limited to left field long term where you hope his plus speed plays. Grade: 30

Arm: Another area where Ruiz's physical ability is hindered by the application. He has plus arm strength but lacks the foot work to make good throws in the infield. Arm should play in left field. Grade: 50

Run: Plus runner, with strong instincts that allow him to steal an elite number of bases. Speed translates to some defensive range at second. Grade: 60

Overall: A tools over ability player with tantalizing talent. There's strong quality of contact, when he makes contact, which isn't often. Plus running that translates to lots of stolen bases, but still can't cover for his fielding inadequacies despite range. It's this struggle between talent and translating tools to abilities that defines Ruiz's game. An improvement in swing decisions at the plate could have a tremendous impact on his ability to carve out a major league role. After two years of going unprotected and unselected in the rule five draft have put Ruiz's prospect status in very cloudy territory.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 2 CBB
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, high waisted, athletic. Room to add 10-15 more pounds as he matures. Near max, high level of conditioning. Long injury history dating back to his amateur days. Missed most of 2019 following an elbow injury. Underwent PRP, but elected for Tommy John Surgery after a second shutdown in March of 2020

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; short arm action; over the top arm slot; tall and fall delivery; exaggerated leg kick; short strider. Fast arm but lack of lower half drive puts strain on arm and shoulder.

Fastball: 92-94 mph; touches 95-96 mph; with late hop. Ride over run fastball, locates well to the upper quadrants and gloveside. Struggles to locate armside, and will often catch too much of the plate. Due to good shape and average or better velocity the pitch grades as major league average out of the pen. Grade: 50

Curveball: Overhand curveball with 12-6 shape. Low 80s velocity, can manipulate the shape to add depth or slurvy break; messed with a slider in the past. Best swing and miss pitch and his go to secondary. Can struggle to land at the bottom of the zone at times, and batters can lay off of it. That's the exception and not the norm however. Above-average curveball with functional over aesthetic value. Grade: 55

Changeup: Below average changeup with some possible projection remaining. Will show flashes of average but it's infrequently used and will at times flatten out. When he gets around the ball he can create nice run and tumble, but his lack of confidence and recent arm injury are cause for concern with his ability to pronate consistently. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Even prior to TJS Lawson's control and command were below average. He tends to hit zones more than spots. He makes it a habit of wasting pitches in pitchers counts and running his pitch count up. When he begins to miss with his fastball up it can snowball as his curveball isn't of the strike stealing variety. He tends to wear down after a single time through the lineup and his release point and mechanics begin to get sloppy manifesting in walks. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: An big arm talent that's never fully been able to master command of his raw stuff. There's enough pitchability to project a major league role if he can avoid injury for a sustained period of time. With an average fastball that could play hotter in short stints, and an above average bat missing secondary give Lawson a solid foundation for a future in the pen. If Lawson can come back to full strength and throw strikes his 40 man spot may afford him an opportunity in San Diego (or elsewhere) this season. Low leverage relief role type with a little projection remaining.
