Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Robert James

Age: 25 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Fantastic natural athlete. Ideal athletic frame, not likely to add bulk but does not lack strength average size. Not overly physical, but a big league body.

Hit: Standing up pretty straight almost like an open stance. Holds his hands way up high. Little pre-pitch movement. No leg kick, small stride. He looks to be quick to the ball and he's got a good bat path but his swing is extremely stiff. He's got natural pop but he doesn't do a good job incorporating his lower half and it doesn't look like he uses his lower half or hips to generate any power. He also has poor plate coverage and doesn't stay on balls outside. It looks like he's just pulling everything with his arm and he hits a lot of medium fly balls to RF. I don't think I saw him hit the ball hard to the opposite field- if he hits it to the left side, it's usually a mishit or a chopper. He's got a good eye and is a patient hitter, he works counts and draws walks. However, he can be beaten up high with good velocity, so oftentimes pitcher's pound him away and then throw a high fastball by him to finish him off. Grade: 30

Power: He's got natural power, I saw him absolutely crush the ball occasionally. His average exit velocity isn't great because of all the mishits but he can hit the ball very hard when he squares it up. He looks to drive the ball in the air. He hit 19 HR in 412 PA last year (in a hitter's league but still) so the power is there but his problems with his hit tool are preventing the power from fully playing. Grade: 50

Field: He's a very good fielder. Natural CF, he gets great jumps and reads the ball well. He covers a lot of ground. Could definitely play a decent CF in MLB. Grade: 60

Arm: Average arm, with average accuracy. He plays CF so his arm isn't tested a lot. He hits the cutoff man and is accurate, teams aren't going to run wild on him or something. Grade: 50

Run: Plus runner, speed translates to impact on both sides of the ball. Instinctual baserunner and excellent base stealer. Speed for centerfield does a good job closing gaps. Grade: 60

Overall: Guys like this are always hard to grade because they do so many things well but none of it matters if they don't fix the thing that doesn't work well (which is almost always the hit tool). It's a familiar song- all the ingredients are here for an above-average regular but the hit tool is holding Kendall back. It's a power/speed profile with plus defense but it doesn't work if Kendall hits like this. Last year Kendall had a completely unplayable 35.7 K% (during the year he repeated High-A!). And I'm not sure what the answer is. He does a lot of good things in the box; he works counts and draws walks, the pop is there but he needs to completely rework his swing so that he can cover the outer half of the plate. He could probably survive as a dead pull hitter because everything else works but he's going to have to figure out a way to handle the outer half because pitchers are eating him alive out there.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 13
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall physical specimen former division one QB at Oklahoma. Long legs, high waisted, physically strong, muscular but not bulky. Light projection for ten pounds of muscle.

Hit: Sets up square to the pitcher, with slight bend in his knees and waist. Slight toe tap, with a longer, steeper bat path. Average bat speed coupled with his bat path leads to trouble with elevated velocity and fastballs at 94 mph or over. Longer limbs make it harder for players of his size to stay compact which is why some of his swing and miss is not wholly unexpected. Thomas does however show an uncanny ability to stay on time during his swing due to his plus athleticism and body control. His bat to ball ability is below average with plenty of zone miss in the profile. Questionable plate discipline further complicates matters. Poor hit tool with strong quality of contact. Grade: 30

Power: Easy all fields power he doesn't have to sell out for. Despite contact issues power does play in game. Shows the ability to drive the ball with very little effort to all parts of the park. Natural loft in his swing and longer path allow him to kill fastballs on the outer half if he can catch up to it. Has produced a .200+ Isolated Slugging across 400+ minor league games and despite his hit tool issues presents massive power upside. Grade: 60

Field: Above average fielder with strong reads off the bat and clean routes. Above average runner with long strides. Could conceivably play centerfield but seems best suited for right due better than average but not quite plus speed. Showed little trouble making routine plays across a number of looks. Does a good job staying in front of the ball and taking the right chances. Grade: 55

Arm: Above average arm with good on line carry on throws to the infield. You'd expect more arc from a pass first college quarterback perhaps but it's a good arm that keeps runners honest, but doesn't have the strength and distance to be a true weapon from the outfield. Grade: 55

Run: Clocks consistent run times in the above average to average range. Utilizes running ability in the field with his long strides and athletic movements. Not a burner but has enough speed to push for extra bases and put pressure on the defense when on. Not a great base stealer but will pick his spots and can be effective. All of his skills culminate in an above average run tool. Grade: 55

Overall: Despite being an "old" prospect at 26, Thomas' college football career coupled with the pandemic gives reason to cut him some slack. Overall it's a tooled up profile that had a productive 2019 in the upper minors (.334 wOBA 108 wRC+ in AA), and in a less talent rich organization Thomas may have seen some MLB time in 2020. His inability to make contact with consistency really drags down the entire profile. However his combination of fielding ability and offensive upside due to his plus power make him a perfect fit for a long term platoon role. Whether or not he gets there will depend on whether he can make enough contact to be a major leaguer. High end up and down profile.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Broad shouldered, lean, and athletic build with room for positive projection in the coming years. Loose fluid athlete that moves well on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Side step to exaggerated leg kick and moderate hand raise, long strider with above average extension, gets deep into back leg in drive, with trunk tilt toward the first base side. He keeps his operation simple from the stretch, but doesn't engage his back hip quite the same way he does in his full delivery. Three quarters arm action, with a lot of length early in his stroke.

Fastball: Sits low to mid-90s averaging around 93 mph in 2019. Heavily focused on working in the upper quadrants and he will get swings and misses on the pitch. Lands the fastball heavily armside but does show fringe ability to locate gloveside. Good characteristics pairing velocity, a low release point, and efficient spin. It misses bats consistently when located high and this isn't a matter of 94-95 mph overwhelming lower level hitters either. Morillo gets 21.3 IVB on average giving it a plus characteristic. Unfortunately in our viewings Morillo showed fringe average control and below average command of the pitch. A step forward in this area could move this pitch to plus. Grade: 55

Slider: A gyro spin slider with some late dump as it approaches the plate. Middle of the road efficiency leads to slurvy shape. Best secondary weapon, average swing and miss offering, with poor command. His best sliders flash late drop. Good velocity at 86-87 mph on average which makes up for some of the generic movement it gets. Average raw spin at 2550-2600 rpms but a lot of that is gyro. Will miss bats in the minors due to the velocity and ability to play off of his fastball. We have less confidence that's the case as Morillo sees advanced competition. Grade: 40

Changeup: Firm rarely used offering, still a work in progress at the moment, not even fair to call it a third pitch with its infrequent usage. Averages around eight to ten mph of separation from the fastball. Average horizontal movement, but he does a poor job of killing lift. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Below average control profile with poor command. It's realistic to anticipate his fastball control and command improve over time and his slider should follow. Shows little to no confidence in his changeup at the moment and does not throw the pitch with conviction. Below average strike thrower, despite flashes of brilliance where he locates all over the top of the zone. Fastball located in the upper quadrants almost exclusively. Possess enough fastball command to cut it as a reliever. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: There's definitely arm talent present in Morillo's profile. He features a near-plus fastball, above average velocity with perhaps more in the tank. The generic secondaries, below average control, and poor command however make us question the profile long term. Morillo's fastball is a good one, and his delivery has deceptive qualities, but without a true put away secondary it's difficult to envision much success even in relief. He's rule five eligible this year and the organization chose to leave him unprotected. He does possess the type of fastball quality that a team could take a shot on Morillo on the rule five.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 13
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Broad shoulders, well built. Strong, durable body. Well built, powerful lower half. Large biceps, developed frame. Limited physical projection remaining. Checkered injury history; was involved in serious life threatening head injury from car accident. Will miss most of 2021 due to Tommy John recovery.

Delivery & Mechanics: Extremely vertical arm slot with added deception. Ball hidden from view of hitter and appears to come from his head. Pitches out of wind up with glove at the belt, big step back as he starts motion, shows hitters the back of the jersey and hides the baseball completely throughout. Very difficult look for hitters, especially as a short-stint reliever they see once a game. Utilizes much more simplified leg kick during stretch.

Fastball: Sits 91-94. T97. Plays up for hitters due to deception and arm slot. Arm slot creates big downward plane. Pitch also has good carry and will stay up in the zone. Very heavy fastball tendencies. Fairly straight pitch, but it misses bats and is the primary reason for the big strikeout totals we've seen thus far. Lives glove side with the fastball, away from right-handers and will go inside against lefties. Also likes to work pitch up against righties to set up curveball. Will work down against left-handers to set up changeup. Grade: 55

Curveball: Big 12-to-6 break. Will use sparingly. Command of pitch is spotty. Pairs it with high fastball. Inconsistent pitch. When he misses its mostly up. Grade: 40

Changeup: Was focused on mixing this pitch in more during AFL stint. Will work it down in the zone, or below the zone, against left-handers. Not much horizontal movement here, but he mimics the fastball very well. Almost works like a splitter with the late dive. It's a chase pitch. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Kasowski has troubles repeating his delivery and throwing strikes in general, but for a short burst reliever there's enough here to get by. Below average control and poor command, but the deception gets many swing and misses. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Kasowski has been one of the more stingy relievers in the minors due to a combination of the arm slot, deception and fastball. The injury history has to drag him down a grade or so, but the upside is here for a nasty short burst relief arm. Could find his way into the later innings if the control and command improve. As is he's a depth piece but one that could get selected in this winter's rule five draft. He's a big league ready older relief arm.

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 7
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, muscular, but not overly bulky to the point it saps athleticism. The build of an outside wide receiver in the NFL. Plus athlete that runs well and has above average raw power due to his natural strength.

Hit: Starts from a square stance on the left side with slight bend in his knees, but fairly upright. Lower hands set by his back shoulder, Outman employs a light leg lift timing mechanism before a quiet and quick trigger. Longer bat path due to the uppercut nature of his stroke combined with his longer levers. This in turn leads to a fair amount of swing and miss in the profile. Had elevated strikeout rates as an older college player in both Rookie and Low-A. Poor overall contact hitter that makes up for some of his swing and miss with above average on base ability. Grade: 40

Power: Fringe average game power with above average raw. Outman has the body and bat path to optimize for power. His lack of contact ability and holes in his swing lead to his power playing below his abilities. Has the ability to tap into pull side juice. There's some power projection in his profile but much of it lays on his ability to hit. Grade: 45

Field: Above average fielder bordering on plus. Long majestic strides in the outfield does an above average job of covering ground which aids average route running. He is instinctual in the field and focused, limiting lapses. He played all three outfield spots for Great Lakes in 2019 but manned center predominantly, starting 93 games there. The tool from which Outman's profile derives the greatest value. Grade: 55

Arm: Above average outfield arm with seven assists in 2019. Good online carry and accuracy average to a tick better distance but good form and a strong motion. Grade: 55

Run: Above average runner that clocks consistent 55-60 run times home to first with speed translating in the field and on the base paths. Aggressive baserunner, sometimes will take chances on steals and get thrown out. Jumps are average with solid reads of the pitcher. Borderline plus tool, but he could lose a step in the coming years due to the size of his frame. Grade: 55

Overall: With strong supporting skills and questionable offensive tools overall, Outman profiles perfectly as an up and down emergency outfielder type. There's some hope for a little more out of the profile if Outman is able to improve his bat to ball skills and cut down on the swing and miss. Good defense, outfield flexibility, and strong throwing arm could push him to a low end bench outfield role if the hit improves. There's more risk in the profile than typical of a college outfield profile.

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Medium frame. Not particularly physical but narrow shoulders and hips leave limited room for physical projection.

Hit: Slightly open stance. Leg kick as timing mechanism. Loose, athletic swing; hands work in an efficient, tight circle. Slightly uphill attack angle to lift pitches down in the strike zone. Above-average bat control. Good strike zone awareness, although he occasionally gets out in front of offspeed stuff and pulls it on the ground. Grade: 55

Power: Not especially physical; most of his over-the-fence power is limited to the pull side. Has the ability to work the opposite-field gap but his slugging output is more likely to come from a high volume of doubles than home runs. Grade: 45

Field: Infield hands are fine, but he's not the quick twitch, high-end athlete typical of major-league shortstops. Fringy lateral quickness probably pushes him off shortstop to second base full-time. Grade: 40

Arm: Fringe arm strength; enough to play second base but doesn't have the ability to zip the ball across his body or off-platform from shortstop. Combined with fringe range, probably limits him to the right side of the infield and/or corner outfield. Grade: 45

Run: Below-average runner; doesn't get to full speed particularly quickly and has short strides. Grade: 40

Overall: Estevez is an offense-minded player who should hit his way to the big leagues in some capacity. He has the ability to work the whole field and consistently make line drive contact, which should help him run high batting averages on balls in play. He'll likely also limit strikeouts, which should keep his on-base percentage up despite a history of fringe-average walk rates. He'll need to hit, though, since the rest of the profile is uninspiring. Estevez isn't a great athlete and doesn't have big power. His most obvious path to an everyday role is as a hit-over-power second baseman, a profile teams have devalued a bit in recent years. Almost exclusively a middle infielder to this point, it wouldn't be surprising to see Estevez get some work at first base or even in left field to broaden his defensive profile and make a bat-first utility role more plausible.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall, broad shouldered and still lanky. Plenty of positive projection remains in the frame. Longer levers, high waisted, and somewhat athletic.

Hit: Very upright batting stance. Hands by ear bat resting slightly downward over back shoulder. Toe tap trigger with steep bat angle, quiet load. Not a ton of power present at point of contact as Lao is still learning to drive the ball. Can get passive at times, and overly aggressive at others. Some in-zone swing and miss as well leading to a below average hit tool projection long term. Does show the ability to take a walk and typically takes a lot of pitches per plate appearances working deep into counts. Grade: 40

Power: Easy power from both sides of the plate. Swing path with natural loft is conducive for flyball contact and rocket liners. Plus raw in batting practice to all fields. Pole to pole power, he can get to in games, but not yet with consistency. There's plenty of positive physical projection in the frame and enough approach and bat to ball skill to foresee more game power coming. Grade: 55

Field: Will play multiple spots in the dirt but most at home at the corners. Below average defensive third baseman. Average hands and actions but poor lateral movement. Has enough range to be an asset at first base long term, but will need to improve instincts around the bag. Grade: 40

Arm: Below average arm overall, will make throws but inconsistent mechanics and lacks zip. Accuracy is lacking at times, but overall he hits his target. Likely to settle at first base long term sure to his lack of arm strength. Grade: 40

Run: Above average runner, should slow down with age. Quicker out the box than you'd expect and moves well on the bases. Good jump and first step as a base stealer. While not a major part of his game he has the ability to catch batteries sleeping. Grade: 50

Overall: A potential power hitting corner infielder with some room for growth both physically and developmentally who's a long ways away. Good physicality with the ability to add strength and push his power into plus territory. Needs to improve ability to adjust to breaking balls and offspeed to truly maximize his offensive potential. Long term a first base profile, good enough hands and actions for an everyday role there should the bat warrant it. Wild card platoon profile at the moment with the ability to jump into a fringe everyday profile in the coming years. His early rule five eligibility in 2020 makes him more difficult to project.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 145 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Diminutive build, listed at 5-foot-10 but is closer to 5-foot-8. Limited physical stature leads to limited projection overall. Still has the ability to add 15-20 lbs over time.

Hit: Above average hand-eye coordination. Good bat-to-ball skills that lead to high contact rates and lower swing and miss numbers than typical of teenage hitters. Sets slightly open, closing off with a quick toe tap timing mechanism. Has some angle to the bat at the point of contact. Will struggle with breaking balls and good offspeed, but it's not a regular occurrence. Short to the ball with a good repeatable stroke. Average hit tool with room for further growth. Grade: 50

Power: He's smaller in stature so it's tough to project significant gains in this department, but he is compact and lofty. The swing is definitely optimized for power and he should add strength as he gets older. While big power is not in the cards long term, I can see him getting to fringe average due to barrel control and his ability to get the most out of his swing at the point of contact. Grade: 40

Field: Clean infield actions, smooth transfer, average range at second base. Moves well laterally and shows some athleticism on tough plays. Not a flashy defender but a sturdy one. Likely limited to second base long term limiting his profile. Grade: 50

Arm: Below average arm, makes the necessary throws for second base. Not a ton of zip in his turns at second, but accurate overall. Grade: 40

Run: Fringe-average runner but high motor plays on the speed plays above the grade. Not a burner but he will attempt stolen bases, though it's not a major part of his game. Grade: 45

Overall: A bat first second base type with enough defensive skills and athleticism to be an average defender at the position. There's a lot to like about Vivas' setup at the plate and ability to make contact. He has advanced feel for the zone already and it's clear each at bat has a plan. The unknown variable is the ability for Vivas to add power. He has the necessary swing mechanics to make that a reality, it's a matter of adding strength. Good overall player that could fit into a bench bat role if the profile doesn't max out.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Athletic body with average frame. Lean and lanky with long limbs. Wide shoulders with room to add muscle. Round butt, but not large. Thighs have some thickness, but room for more. Athletic package that appears to move well all together. Projectable frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Three quarters arm slot with moderately high effort. Leg kick comes up high on the chest before he dips deep into the glutes and rides down the mound. Arm is on time, if not a little early. Separation looks good in limited samples. Average to above average arm speed. Delivery has become more athletic since his amateur showcase, getting deeper into his glutes which will help lower release.

Fastball: 88-91, T94. Prominent tail. Attacks with it, but content to steal a strike by running it back over the outside corner gloveside. Seems to have solid feel and command for it. Ran it by multiple hitters in limited looks, especially up in the zone. Currently below average, but should grow into more velocity as his body matures. Grade: 50

Curveball: 74-76. Big, vertical breaker with a 1-7 shape. Throws out of the zone for whiffs, but not afraid to try and steal a strike. Inconsistent right now, but the best ones flash plus with sharp break. Typically, less sharp but appears to play well off the high fastball. Tends to locate too far from the strike zone to get hitters to chase. Grade: 45

Changeup: 79-82. Sells it well with armspeed. Nearly identical to fastball. Some fade to it. Gets weak swings and whiffs below the zone. Struggles to locate a little. Likely to be his out pitch and potentially his best pitch overall if it continues to develop. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Always around the zone and seems to have a plan on where to locate. Keeps hitters on their toes by pounding them with strikes. Has trouble locating chase pitches close enough to be competitive at times. Control over command, but has a knack for finding edges. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Rosario is a young but exciting right-hander with a projectable frame that should add velocity and allow his fastball to get to average. The stuff isn't overwhelming, but he appears to have solid feel for his changeup already and could be a plus pitch if everything breaks right. Average control allows him to pound the zone with strikes. His ceiling will live and die with his ability to add good weight and in turn, velocity. If things break well, he has a shot to be a back end starter. If not, his FB/CH profile is best suited for long relief or emergency depth.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Average build all around, thin and wiry, still has 20 pounds or so of maximum projection but might have trouble adding weight. Uses his six foot height to his advantage with an ungodly low average release height of five feet.

Delivery & Mechanics: Starts with a heavier side-step, lowers glove hands before giving way to a higher leg lift that closes off his frontside. He delivers from a low three quarters that's only accentuated by his drop and drive mechanics. His leg block is somewhat inefficient and his posture at foot strike isn't great. All that being said Choi does a good job of replicating his motion and staying inline with the plate.

Fastball: A clinic in feel over stuff to find effectiveness. Choi's fastball sits 89-92 mph on average and doesn't feature either tremendous vertical lift or horizontal run. It sits in the 2300 rpm range and shows moderate lift (14 IVB) and run (10 HMov), it does play up however due to his unicorn low release point. An average of five feet in height in the release coupled with the ability to land the pitch effectively in all four quadrants make it a fringe average pitch despite subpar velocity and movement. Grade: 45

Curveball: A slightly slower version of his slider with a little more side spin. The curveball sits in the low 70s with two-plane movement. He does land the pitch for strikes but it's less of a quality offering than the slider. He does show feel for the pitch with the ability to bury it when needed. It's a below average pitch due to movement and velocity but it's not unusable due to feel. Grade: 40

Slider: Slower velocity slider in the 77-79 mph range. Gyro spin pitch with little vertical of horizontal movement. It does pair well with his fastball and like all of his pitches he's adept at hitting spots and moving it around the zone. A pitch that's below average at the moment but plays up due to his feel for his arsenal. He could take a step forward with the pitch by lowering its efficiency and adding a few ticks of velocity in the coming years. For now it's a 45 that plays up due to feel. Grade: 45

Changeup: It's been classified as a splitter in some places because it kills lift and the above average run it gets (15 HMov). It was his best swing and miss offering in AZL play and at 81 mph shows an excellent velocity differential from his fastball. Shows good feel for the pitch and the ability to land it for strikes or bury it when needed. Grade: 55

Control and Command: If you've read any of the pitch descriptions up to this point you would know that Choi has a good feel for the entirety of his arsenal. Lands all of his pitches for strikes in any count. He really pounds the zone and rarely falls behind in counts. He overwhelmed AZL hitters with a mix of pitches and took advantage of the generous strike zones. Above average control and average command. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A control and command profile with feel for a four-pitch mix. He has unique characteristics in his low release and his ability to sequence at an advanced level. He has an out pitch in his changeup/splitter and the ability to set it up with a trio of pitches to get ahead in counts. How he progresses ultimately will depend on his command progressing to a plus level or his stuff ticking up a bit on his fastball and slider. At 91-94 mph with Choi's feel he could be a true starter long term. This is of the utmost importance as his stuff might not be typical of a pen arm.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 33
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall and broad shouldered with long limbs. Looks bigger than his listed 6-2 190 lbs. Some projection remaining and minimal maintenance concerns.

Delivery & Mechanics: Sets up in the stretch slightly offset on the first base side. Keeps hands extended at glove break through a sharp rapid contracting movement headed off by a high leg lift, before exploding toward the plate slinging the ball from a high three quarters release. It's a violent motion that comes on you quickly, perfect for relief.

Fastball: Sits 94-96 mph predominantly running it up to 98 mph at its hottest. Two variations of the fastball in a four-and two-seam of similar velocity. Works due to de Geus's velocity and ability to command it and work in the zone consistently. Grade: 50

Cutter: Sits 87-90 mph getting up as high as 91 mph, higher spin pitch at 2800 rpm range more rise than his slider with less horizontal movement. True cutter and de Geus' go to put away pitch. Shows command consistently with the pitch and locates higher in the zone than he does with the slider. Grade: 55

Slider: High spin offering with averages in the 2600-2800 rpm range also throws a slightly different curveball variation. Hammer breaking ball with a good amount of vertical drop. de Geus pairs this with his fastball and cutter to generate a high rate of swings and misses. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Despite his wild motion De Geus continues to pound the zone and hit his spots. He's been an elite strike thrower over his first few seasons of pro ball and I don't anticipate that stopping. Commands his pitches well, though he could still improve a little with his secondaries. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A legitimate relief prospect with a shot at MLB innings in 2021. Left unprotected in the Rule Five and might be of interest to the right club. He combines strike throwing, deception, and bat missing ability and as a relief only arm it's an easy profile to stuff into a bad 25-man roster. Should he sneak through he has a chance to be another good reliever in the Dodgers stable.

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-7
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: As big as they get. Looks every bit of listed numbers. Slightly sloped shoulders. Big, round butt with high waist and long limbs. Thighs are thick. Has already done some body recomposition, but conditioning will be something to watch throughout career. Room for some muscle, especially if conditioning improves. Baby-faced. Moves well for his size. Towering presence on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Low 3/4s to sidearm slot. Good arm speed. Sharp, chest-high leg kick; sits into rear leg as he dips and coils. Average to below-average separation at foot plant. Arm generally on time. Finishes high. Very similar from stretch. Quicker pace, but leg kick remains the same. Moderate to high effort at times.

Fastball: 90-94, T96. Low arm slot gives it plenty of run. Horizontal movement that will play well at the bottom of the zone. Combination of velo, run, and extension will make it tough on righties, running in hard on the hands. Grade: 55

Curveball: 76-78. Sharp break when it's tight, flashing plus movement. Arm slot gives it a slurvy, sweeping action at times. Others will drop a little harder. Doesn't have the feel yet to spin it consistently, but the framework is there. Can drop it in for strikes. Doesn't pair that well with the horizontal fastball. Grade: 55

Changeup: 86. Hardly seen in limited looks. Definitive 3rd offering. Decent separation from fastball. Very likely to change as we see more. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Solid control in limited looks. Around the zone a lot, but not spotting up much. Firing the ball at an area and letting his stuff do the work. Struggled with walks in 2019, but was excellent in 2018. Likely to change as we get more looks. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Big fireballer who can spin a curve. His massive size and good stuff give him a shot to start, but there are two major relief profile blemishes. His control took a big step back in 2019 and his fastball/curve combo don't play very well off each other, which might get exposed at higher levels where pitch recognition is better. If everything comes together, he could be a back end starter, but the floor is low-leverage relief if the change never develops or the control is truly as bad as 2019.

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: An average frame with an immature build, plenty of positive projection remains in the frame. Athletic build with strength already present in lower half. Frame should require minimal maintenance with a strong foundation to add muscle.

Hit: Sets up very slightly open to the pitcher with a deep bend in his legs. Starts with the bat resting on his shoulder with an elevated hand position. Pre-swing he gets deep into his back hip transitioning weight from an exaggerated leg lift trigger mechanism. Sets into a rotational swing with a sloping path that limits his plate coverage. Pulls off heavily on his swings and misses, timing can be a bit of a mess. There are some qualities that hint toward future potential, specifically his above average bat speed and on base skills. The last time we saw Valera he was a 19-20 year old getting his first taste of full-season ball. While his extreme swing and miss is not likely to disappear entirely, he has shown strong on base skills early in his career, leaving some hope for a more refined approach from Valera in 2021. Grade: 40

Power: Lacks loft in his swing to drive the ball at this point, greater than 50% groundball profile, with mechanical flaws that sap away from raw power. Below average distance on his fly balls and he hits very few. It's not 20 power as he does show some projection for future below average in game power due to his bat speed. It's above average raw power in batting practice, so there's definitely power projection. Instructional league reports point to improved power playing in game versus more advanced competition. It's fringe average for now with possible average or better projection. Grade: 45

Field: Sure handed and flashy at times playing the six. Has the hands, first step, and actions for short but his arm while accurate is strong enough for the positions most demanding throws. The glove itself is above average and capable of manning shortstop long term. Should his lack of arm strength move him to second base he projects as above average there. Grade: 55

Arm: Below average arm for shortstop, accurate and on target more often than most but struggles to get the zip needed for the throws deep in the hole at short or offset to the third base side. Likely enough arm to handle second base long term. Grade: 40

Run: Above average to fringe plus runner. Outperforms speed as a base runner, extremely aggressive and effective base stealer. Stole 27 bases and was caught only five times in 2019. Shows excellent reads and jumps. His base running is a weapon. While his run times flirt with plus his instincts on the bases and ability to translate his speed in the running game pushes the grade to plus. Grade: 60

Overall: At the moment Valera's game is predicated on his slick glove and base running, but there's projection in the power tool and some hope that he can bump his hit to a 45 with more exposure. We're conservative with prospects like Valera due to the high rate of failure when gambling on hit tools improving a full grade. Without an improvement in plate profile Valera is teetering between a utility role and an up/down emergency role. For now he's a player to keep an eye on should production jump in 2021.

Evaluator: Robert James

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Great size, broad-shouldered and strong. His physical projection looks about done but he's got plenty of size. Strong lower half. Not a great runner but he's a good athlete.

Hit: Enigmatic hitter, with a highly aggressive approach and energetic demeanor at the plate. Despite this it's toned way down from what it used to be- a close approximation of his old swing is one of those old Bugs Bunny cartoons. It's much quieter now but he still looks like he's absolutely killing the ball. And the swing works- the problem is it works too well, he absolutely refuses to walk. He had a 3% BB rate last year and frankly there are few to none successful hitters that walk that rarely. He also has an extremely high GB but his swing isn't geared for GB contact, it's a product of his aggressive nature and habit of contact on the wrong pitches. Grade: 40

Power: He's got power. The ball jumps off his bat and he can hit it way out to the opposite field. But again the power doesn't play as well as it should because he swings at everything which includes a lot of balls that it's basically impossible to drive. Improved pitch selection could go a long way to Santana unlocking his plus raw BP power. Grade: 50

Field: Santana mostly played third base with some first base thrown in as well. He's an adequate fielder with an average first step, lateral movement and infield actions. Not rangey, but certainly not a limited fielder. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm with the ability to make some highlight reel throws at times. Cannon arm with online carry and the ability to repeat his motion and land on his intended target, Santana's strongest skill. Grade: 60

Run: Below average runner, not a base clogger and can move at a fringe pace once underway. Base stealing isn't part of his game and he has just average range at third. Grade: 40

Overall: Like many prospects, the only thing holding Santana back from being an everyday player is his hit tool. However, with the vast majority of prospects, the problem is that they don't make enough contact- as mentioned previously, Santana has the opposite problem. He makes too MUCH contact. That may not seem like an issue but it is; Santana strikes out over 20% of the time and even though that's not a crazy amount by today's standards, if he maintains his 3% BB rate, he would probably have to hit around .400 on balls in play just to be an average regular. That's not going to happen. Santana is almost 24 and it's nearly impossible to imagine him changing his approach and suddenly developing patience. However, the other tools are good enough to where I'll project him as a platoon/utility guy even though he'll almost certainly max out as an org soldier.

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall, high-waisted body. Broad shoulders with some muscle mass. Even entering age 25 season, seemingly has a little bit of room for mass in lower half.

Hit: Holds hands behind head. Toe tap. Long arms lead to a sweepy bat path; leaves him susceptible to high velocity on the inner half. Steep uphill bat path through contact. Bat leaves the hitting zone very quickly, leading to lots of swing-and-miss in the zone. Below-average bat control limits Peters' ability to cover different quadrants. Peters is patient and has a discerning feel for the strike zone; will occasionally get too far out on his front foot against offspeed stuff but isn't afraid to take pitches and work deep counts. Grade: 30

Power: Has plus-plus raw power to all fields. Uphill bat path is geared for loft. Poor bat-to-ball skills could limit in-game power a bit but Peters has 30-homer potential. Angular bat path and ability to spray balls to all fields due to significant strength and bat speed. Legit 70 raw in batting practice. Grade: 60

Field: Capable of playing anywhere in the outfield; more athletic than one would expect from a player his size. Should be average in center field, would be above-average if bumped into a corner. Grade: 50

Arm: Plus arm is sufficient to play anywhere in the outfield. Grade: 50

Run: Huge stride length leads to deceptively plus speed; accelerates quickly. Uses speed effectively in the field with great makeup time and the ability to close gaps. Moves extremely well for 6-foot-6. Grade: 60

Overall: Peters' strikeout rate probably prevents him from playing everyday. He has struck out in around 30% of plate appearances at each minor-league level, which figures to bump up a few more points against MLB pitching. It's really difficult to be an above-average hitter with that much swing and miss. But Peters does everything else well and should be a high-quality role player. He can play all throughout the outfield and has the swing plane to tap into his huge raw power.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Draft - Round CBB
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Fits the bill of listed 6'3, 215 pounds. Top-heavy build with broad, sloping shoulders with a wide back. Relatively average frame, otherwise. Hips a tad narrow and average thighs. Legs look strong but don't stand out and the waist may be a little on the soft side. Back soreness in 2019.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works from stretch only. Sets up on first base side of the rubber, slightly closed to the hitter, hands resting between navel and chest. Leg kick is somewhat abrupt; comes to chest while body adds a little more coil. Arm comes through at 3/4 slot with moderate effort. Arm action drops down behind butt and hides the ball until just before release. Finishes controlled on the first base side. Release height averages just above six feet. Works deliberately. Not concerned with runner. Lowered arm slot during 2020 quarantine.

Fastball: 95-96, T97. Comes a little more over the top on the fastball, more of a high three quarters sometimes which creates a near ideal spin axis. Has some life, but doesn't get as many whiffs as you might expect for sitting 96. Leaves it at the bottom of the zone more than he should, running into barrels. Spins it decently, averaging 2300 RPM, getting above-average lift. Velo and movement give it potential for a plus pitch if he locates it better. Plays down at the bottom of the zone. Grade: 55

Slider: 85-88. Hard, tight gyro slider with bite at its best. Gets depth with a hint of lateral movement. Has a tendency to spike it once or twice an appearance. Inconsistent quality, sometimes morphs into more of a cutter and doesn't run to intended location. Occasionally tries to steal a strike with it armside, but mostly used below the zone for chases. Gyro spin averaging close to 2200. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Struggles to find the zone consistently and will lose it all together at times spiking pitches and missing badly on three-ball counts. When he's on, he finds the corners and edges pretty often, typically not leaving much over the heart. Very much an on or off kind of thing with him without a lot of in between. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: Sborz is a hard-throwing relief-only profile with a good fastball and average slider. He's got a live arm and spins a fastball well, but it plays down at the bottom of the zone. His gyro-slider flashes plus at times but sits more consistently around average. He's a low-leverage type with an average high-leverage ceiling if he can optimize the fastball a bit more. Just doesn't miss enough bats right now to be used with the game on the line.

Age: 27 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 10
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall strong build, little maintenance worry, already 27 so he's at physical peak. Broad shouldered strong but not bulky frame. Surprisingly below average athlete.

Hit: Has made several adjustments over the last three years to tap into more of his raw power. Opened up slightly more to the pitcher with a pronounced crouch he didn't have at Kentucky. Larger leg kick trigger, has lowered hands from ear height to around his back shoulder. Gets deep into back hip with leg kick as he closes off, but his hips bleed a little and he rotates heavily to make up for it. Uppercut bat path but he manages to stay somewhat compact. Limits his plate coverage and ability to fight off fastballs at the top of the zone. Traded contact for power over the last few years but from a quality of contact standpoint it was worth it. High level on base skills with the ability to grind out at bats due to his discerning eye in the box. Fringe average hit tool despite below average bat to ball. Grade: 45

Power: All of the aforementioned changes have allowed Reks to tap into more in game power over the last two years. In 2019 his ground ball rate dropped by 10 percentage points and his flyball rate grew by 15 percentage points. He showed more over the fence power this summer at the alternate site slugging his way onto the 40 man. It's an uppercut swing and he still doesn't do a great job of generating power from his lower half but it plays as average MLB power right now. Grade: 50

Field: Poor fielder relegated to left field only duty. His best defensive position is truly DH. Is a limited fielder in terms of range as he has below average speed. He doesn't have a strong arm and his route running is fringe at best. It's a 30 left field profile you can throw out there in a pinch. Grade: 30

Arm: Below average arm, enough to hide in left field but not a threat to nail baserunners or unleash long throws. Grade: 40

Run: Longer legs but slow strides and somewhat flat footed running style. He'll clock average run times on occasion but most settle into the below average to fringe range. Not a bad base runner, slightly better than station to station. Grade: 40

Overall: One of the most unique players in the Dodgers system and one that might see MLB time in 2021. Fringe hit tool with on base skills and the ability to hit for power. He's likely a strong side platoon bat in left. While he is excellent against righthanders he's slightly below average against lefties. While it's a noticeable difference he hits lefties well enough to carve out a role as a full time DH on a lower tier club. The fact that he was added to the 40-man roster speaks to his improvement over the last two seasons and his major league readiness.

Evaluator: Wyatt Kleinberg

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: At 6'2'' 170, De Jesus is built pretty much to the specifications of the "ideal" modern shortstop. With more room to fill in, De Jesus should project out very nicely from a physical standpoint. While powerful, he is not an elite athlete by any means at the shortstop position however -- he lacks flexibility and lateral explosiveness that may see him better suited at third.

Hit: De Jesus has overall plus potential as a hitter. He is very good at getting his hands to the baseball, which is key in producing consistent flush contact. With plus bat speed and his aforementioned good hands, he can make up for his very lengthy load, and shows an ability to sit back and go the other way when required of him. He is very compact from front foot plant on, which is extremely helpful in his ability to make adjustments to pitches. While his pitch recognition and discipline are still lacking, he projects as a potential plus big league bat. Grade: 50

Power: Mechanically, De Jesus possesses some traits that suggest plus power potential -- he creates a solid amount of separation, and does a very good job of setting his bat angle early (with proper, lift based bat path optimization, this could lead to more power numbers). De Jesus possesses a leg kick, which is a plus in further power generation. He already has a plus power profile as a teen, and with a lot of bulking up to do could become a real power threat. Right now, he looks like an easy 20-25 home run guy. Grade: 55

Field: While De Jesus is an extremely smooth mover, he is not very explosive. This creates issues for him as he possesses an above-average glove and understanding for positioning. The lack of explosiveness and lateral mobility limits his ability to stick at short, though a shift to third base when he fills out could result in an overall defensive asset. Grade: 45

Arm: De Jesus has a very good arm. At shortstop, he has been able to make throws from deep in the 5/6 hole, and he has not had trouble on close double play balls. His overall accuracy is plus as well, leading many to believe that the arm is his best defensive asset. Grade: 55

Run: The largest weakness in De Jesus' game is his lack of speed and explosiveness. He is subpar in both categories and does not look like a threat on the bases whatsoever. Grade: 30

Overall: Overall, De Jesus looks like a plus big leaguer if he reaches his full potential. The projectable frame and solid overall swing mechanics suggest that he could project plus in both the hit and power tool categories. While his explosiveness and speed are limiting for him at the shortstop position, his plus glove and borderline elite arm help make up for it -- he would likely be best suited however at third base.

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Thick, heavy, and barrel chested, broad shouldered and big framed. Body will need significant upkeep and maintenance as he ages.

Delivery & Mechanics: From the full delivery slight sidestep and pause before drive, exploding with a quick step leg block staying upright in a tall and fall motion toward the plate. Heavily into his glutes in his delivery which bodes well for future velocity. From the stretch the motion is way toned down but he'll vary his timing, adding a quick leg lift. Will employ a sidestep from the stretch with runners on. Higher three quarters arm action, generates exceptional arm speed. Very deceptive pick off throws to first.

Fastball: Sits 92-95 mph out of the gate, with some ability to rise and run the pitch. Consistently shows good horizontal run, with late sharp action. Struggles to consistently locate from the stretch. Lands it best to his armside but will show the ability to elevate glove side to right handed batters. Good movement on the pitch gets nearly 15 inches of run on average with an average IVB. Reports say that Ortiz's fastball is up to 94-97 mph for stretches which would certainly push this pitch into plus territory. If he can consistently command it at that speed it's an easy 60. For now it's an above average fastball with projection. Grade: 55

Slider: Sweepy more efficient slider with some late vertical. Elevated velocity at 85-87 mph make it a bat missing pitch particularly against lower level hitters. Higher spin offering at 2600-2700 rpm range, coming from an identical release height to his fastball. He'll lose shape of the pitch at times and miss the zone more than you'd like to see from a potential plus offering. Due to his command woes it's only an average offering at present. Grade: 50

Changeup: Shows great shape but can be inconsistent with execution, missing spots or overthrowing the pitch when his timing is out of whack. At its best it shows significant run, and late tumble making it a swing and miss pitch when landed to the arm-side versus right handed batters. Good separation of ten to twelve miles per hour difference between the changeup and fastball, sitting 82-84 mph. An above average offering with room for further growth. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Below average command at present with some reasons for optimism around his strike throwing. His stuff is too nasty for Ortiz to ever develop into a zone filler, but all he needs to do is get his stuff in the zone enough to make batters swing and the movement should do the rest. Young and improving but shows the ability to control all of his pitches for stretches, it's just inconsistent that he finds it. Commands his fastball elevated and armside, but needs to improve his glove side and lower quadrant command. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: There's a starter's body and arsenal, it's a matter of honing his control and command to an average level. His fastball is a swing and miss pitch and reports of increased velocity only add to the hope it can develop into a plus offering. He features two secondaries that he can go to in any situation and has the ability to get swings and misses with each. The control improvements and his physical upkeep loom large in his risk profile.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 194 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R

RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Average physical build for a pitcher, broad shouldered, and barrel chested. Noticeable strength in glutes, and lower half. Body will require maintenance as he's a little thick in the middle.

Delivery & Mechanics: Sped up operation, but stays smooth throughout motion. Side step to leg lift, accompanied by a twist that closes off his front side to the batter and hides the ball well before quickly driving toward the plate. Low three quarters arm action and on balance finish over his front leg.

Fastball: Sits 91-94 mph during starts bumping 95-96 mph at peak. Generic fastball movement not a lot of rise, run, sink or cut. What Martinez lacks in action he makes up for with feel possessing some of the best fastball command in the organization. He's particularly adept at landing his heat glove side, working inside effectively to left handers and expanding the zone off the plate to righties. This sets up his plus changeup on the other side of the plate. Good starter velocity, generic movement, an average release and advanced feel give Martinez an average offering that's effective in setting up his off-speed. Grade: 50

Curveball: Fringe average secondary, inconsistent shape but when he gets on top of it he will flash two-plane break and generate swings and misses landed mostly armside. Average velocity at 78-82 mph, will get slurvy at times showing less dramatic vertical drop than his best breakers. Will come and go but Martinez will use it as his go-to secondary when it's on. Fringe average pitch due to inconsistency but in a year's time a bump to average is a strong possibility. Grade: 45

Changeup: Arguably the best changeup in the system. Martinez shows advanced feel for the pitch and a willingness to throw it in any count against any handedness. Sits 83-87 mph giving him not the greatest separation between his fastball but typically in the 7-8 mph range. It works however due to a pair of factors, first his arm speed and ability to sell the pitch consistently and second it's nasty late horizontal break, running off the plate to lefties on the outside and stealing strikes to righties off the plate. It generates more swings and misses than any pitch in his arsenal and his ability to use it in any count keeps hitters guessing. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Excellent strike thrower that's limited walks at all of his stops thus far in his professional career. His fastball plays up due to his ability to move the pitch around the zone and locate on the edges. He shows advanced feel for his changeup, and improving feel for his curveball. In fact his inconsistency with his curveball is the one thing keeping his control from a 60 grade. Over 215.1 IP as a professional Martinez has walked just 48 batters (5.5 BB%). Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: A fastball + changeup profile with above average velocity at peak and a very usable breaking ball. His advanced feel for his stuff gives him a shot to stick as a starter as well as his ability to sequence with his four-pitch mix. The biggest question for me is can he add velocity or improve his fastball movement without sacrificing his command for that pitch. If he can do that he has a chance to bump into a role 50 profile. For now he's one of the better under the radar arms in the system with an up and down starter floor and backend ceiling.
