Dec 2020 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 145 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2023
Physical Description: Diminutive build, listed at 5-foot-10 but is closer to 5-foot-8. Limited physical stature leads to limited projection overall. Still has the ability to add 15-20 lbs over time.
Hit: Above average hand-eye coordination. Good bat-to-ball skills that lead to high contact rates and lower swing and miss numbers than typical of teenage hitters. Sets slightly open, closing off with a quick toe tap timing mechanism. Has some angle to the bat at the point of contact. Will struggle with breaking balls and good offspeed, but it's not a regular occurrence. Short to the ball with a good repeatable stroke. Average hit tool with room for further growth. Grade: 50
Power: He's smaller in stature so it's tough to project significant gains in this department, but he is compact and lofty. The swing is definitely optimized for power and he should add strength as he gets older. While big power is not in the cards long term, I can see him getting to fringe average due to barrel control and his ability to get the most out of his swing at the point of contact. Grade: 40
Field: Clean infield actions, smooth transfer, average range at second base. Moves well laterally and shows some athleticism on tough plays. Not a flashy defender but a sturdy one. Likely limited to second base long term limiting his profile. Grade: 50
Arm: Below average arm, makes the necessary throws for second base. Not a ton of zip in his turns at second, but accurate overall. Grade: 40
Run: Fringe-average runner but high motor plays on the speed plays above the grade. Not a burner but he will attempt stolen bases, though it's not a major part of his game. Grade: 45
Overall: A bat first second base type with enough defensive skills and athleticism to be an average defender at the position. There's a lot to like about Vivas' setup at the plate and ability to make contact. He has advanced feel for the zone already and it's clear each at bat has a plan. The unknown variable is the ability for Vivas to add power. He has the necessary swing mechanics to make that a reality, it's a matter of adding strength. Good overall player that could fit into a bench bat role if the profile doesn't max out.
