Dec 2020 Report
Evaluator: Matt Thompson
Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 13
RuleV: Eligible
Physical Description: Broad shoulders, well built. Strong, durable body. Well built, powerful lower half. Large biceps, developed frame. Limited physical projection remaining. Checkered injury history; was involved in serious life threatening head injury from car accident. Will miss most of 2021 due to Tommy John recovery.
Delivery & Mechanics: Extremely vertical arm slot with added deception. Ball hidden from view of hitter and appears to come from his head. Pitches out of wind up with glove at the belt, big step back as he starts motion, shows hitters the back of the jersey and hides the baseball completely throughout. Very difficult look for hitters, especially as a short-stint reliever they see once a game. Utilizes much more simplified leg kick during stretch.
Fastball: Sits 91-94. T97. Plays up for hitters due to deception and arm slot. Arm slot creates big downward plane. Pitch also has good carry and will stay up in the zone. Very heavy fastball tendencies. Fairly straight pitch, but it misses bats and is the primary reason for the big strikeout totals we've seen thus far. Lives glove side with the fastball, away from right-handers and will go inside against lefties. Also likes to work pitch up against righties to set up curveball. Will work down against left-handers to set up changeup. Grade: 55
Curveball: Big 12-to-6 break. Will use sparingly. Command of pitch is spotty. Pairs it with high fastball. Inconsistent pitch. When he misses its mostly up. Grade: 40
Changeup: Was focused on mixing this pitch in more during AFL stint. Will work it down in the zone, or below the zone, against left-handers. Not much horizontal movement here, but he mimics the fastball very well. Almost works like a splitter with the late dive. It's a chase pitch. Grade: 40
Control and Command: Kasowski has troubles repeating his delivery and throwing strikes in general, but for a short burst reliever there's enough here to get by. Below average control and poor command, but the deception gets many swing and misses. Control: 40 | Command: 30
Overall: Kasowski has been one of the more stingy relievers in the minors due to a combination of the arm slot, deception and fastball. The injury history has to drag him down a grade or so, but the upside is here for a nasty short burst relief arm. Could find his way into the later innings if the control and command improve. As is he's a depth piece but one that could get selected in this winter's rule five draft. He's a big league ready older relief arm.
