Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 240 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Large frame. Tall, long limbed body with a high waist. Large trunk; square shoulders, soft barrel chested midsection with the potential to hang additional bad weight.Thick lower half; strong legs. Past injuries include: shoulder and triceps.

Delivery & Mechanics: High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and a high effort delivery. Long arm action; arm-slot wanders; occasional issues repeating delivery and landings. Long stride and extended release generate downward plane; modest deception from leg kick and hand break.

Fastball: Average velocity; below-average command. Sits 91-93 t95 with moderate arm-side run; heavy sinker low in the zone. Consistently sat 94-96 t98 as recent as two years ago. Potential velo increase when he's eventually moved to the bullpen. Grade: 50

Slider: Hard power slider that sits 86-89. Underutilized. Shows short horizontal movement at upper velo band that elicits weak contact. Lower velo band yields more traditional shape with horizontal break and solid depth. Effective put-away offering as a chase pitch. Flashes above-average; sits fringe-average; inconsistent but has a chance to play average over shorter stints. Grade: 50

Changeup: Firm; sits 87-90 lacking optimal separation. Lacks feel, fade and conviction; occasionally slows arm speed telegraphing and guiding the pitch. Thrown almost exclusively to LHB as nothing more than a wrinkle. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Aggressive strike thrower early in the count; nibbles with two strikes, wasting pitches hunting for strikeouts. Extreme fastball heavy sequencing. Moves the ball around the zone well. Not afraid to attack inside or climb the ladder. Fringe-average control; below-average command. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Velocity and quality of pitches have significantly regressed the past two seasons. Modest chance at filling out the backend of a big league rotation if the velocity returns and the change-up evolves into a semi-useful piece. More likely future is a solid low leverage reliever or long man.
