Physical Description: Well proportioned. Broad shoulders that slope; long neck; strong upper body and core; strong, thick lower half stabilizes delivery. Plus athlete; smooth, low effort actions. Minimal projection remaining. Recent 80-game suspension for PED (Stanozolol).
Delivery & Mechanics: Full windup; drop and drive delivery. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort. Long stride and extended release; mechanics sap away optimal downward plane; modest deception from leg kick and hand break. Athletic enough to repeat mechanics fairly well; more fluid from the stretch.
Fastball: Sits 90-93 t95; rests higher around 94-97 in shorter bursts. Manipulates the movement well, shows modest tailing action and heavy sink when it's pounded in the lower third of the zone. Above-average command. Shows confidence spotting it to both sides of the plate; routinely pounds it inside and up in the zone as a chaser. Solid average offering that should play up in a bullpen role. Grade: 50
Curveball: Hard breaker between 80-83. Tight 11/5 action with sharp late break at its best. Inconsistent shape and feel; shows less optimal slurvy depth at times. Willing to throw it in any count; just lacks consistent bite. Challenges hitters in and out of the strike zone late in counts. Overall an inconsistent but solid average pitch. Grade: 50
Changeup: Maintains arm speed; has moderate feel; lacks consistency. Flashes average with late tumble, fade and optimal velocity around 81-83. Sporadically shows up below-average firm and flat; blending with FB. Solid enough to keep LHB honest. Enough athleticism and feel to reach average. Grade: 50
Control and Command: Average control; Fringe-average command. Aggressive strike thrower early in the count; nibbles often prolonging ABs. Sequences well and attacks all four quads of the strike zone. Confident working inside and up in the zone. Above-avenger FB command; secondary pitch command is fringy at best. Control: 50 | Command: 45
Overall: Frustrating profile. Signed for $4.75M back in 2016 and it's been a slow burn developmentally for Gutierrez. Unfortunately the past mid-rotation ceiling now features just modest back of the rotation hope. The regression largely in part to his secondary pitches playing closer to average than their past promise of plus. Rule V eligible this December, the 25-year-old also faces an 80-game PED suspension next season. The window isn't closed, but Gutierrez is without question behind the eight ball. Backend SP ceiling; more realistic outcome is a solid long reliever or low leverage guy that bridges the gap.
