Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: James Chipman

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Large imposing 6'5", 230 pound frame. Broad shoulders; long limbs; high waist; strong thick tree trunk legs - a sturdy workhorse frame capable of eating innings. Lacks athleticism. Negative track record of conditioning and durability concerns. Injury history includes right and left knee surgery, performed back in the Fall of 2016. Season ending IL stints in summer of 2019 (back strain) and summer of 2020 (forearm soreness).

Delivery & Mechanics: Constantly tinkering with delivery and arm slots. Shows his traditional scrunched up 3/4 slot with crossbody arm action and moderate effort delivery. Down the stretch in 2019, mixed in occasional starts with a more traditional upright delivery and high 3/4 slot, with mixed results. Leg kick, hand break and cross body arm action yield great deception. Batters seemed to track him well out of the traditional high 3/4 slot. Despite lacking athleticism, Faedo repeats fairly well and features average arm-speed. Perceived velocity decreases due to short stride and lack of optimal extension.

Fastball: Sits 89-92 and will bump 94 on occasion. Sinks the two-seamer low in the zone; four-seamer is overthrown and dangerously flat. Finds a lot of barrels; mistakes are loud and long. Grade: 45

Curveball: 77-79 with 12/6 shape. Only utilized in starts when he's throwing from a high 3/4 slot. Primarily a spike pitch down in the zone. Enough to challenge upper levels of the minors, below-average at the big league level. Grade: 40

Slider: 83-87; short single plane breaker. Occasional vintage dirty two-plane tilt. Sits fringy and flashes above-average depending on the delivery - plays best with traditional 3/4 slot and crossbody arm action. Future depends on delivery moving forward. Grade: 50

Changeup: Sits 82-85; has feel; maintains arm-speed; shows some late tumble and fade - lacks consistency. Flashed above-average early in his pro career; has stepped back showing mostly fringy to average. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Adequate strike thrower: fills all four quadrants with strikes. Advanced feel; has pitchability; sequences well. Shows above-average control with fringe-average command. Barrel and homer prone. Control: 55 | Command: 45

Overall: Frustrating profile. Curious to see which delivery and arm slot he chooses moving forward - hopefully it's the original standard 3/4. Overall his arsenal lacks optimal velocity and desired separation, as three offerings are within 7-10 mph. A consistent uptick in fastball velocity and/or the return of the former nastiness of the SL or CH is crucial for him to stick in the rotation. There's some backend of the rotation potential should any of that come to fruition. A more likely future is however that of an opener or solid low leverage reliever.
