Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 1st
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Slender frame at 6'2", 195 pounds with plenty of projection remaining. High waisted with long limbs. Opted to go to Driveline and Cressey Sports Management instead of Cape Cod League after the 2019 season, added 20 pounds of muscle to his lower body and saw improved stuff across the board in an abbreviated 2020. Very competitive.

Delivery & Mechanics: Both the wind-up and stretch feature a high leg kick from the third base side of the rubber. Throws from a three-quarters armslot, pitches down the hill well. Extension is not the greatest and there is some slight effort in his delivery, but creates good deception. Repeats delivery well.

Fastball: With Duke in 2019, Jarvis' velocity range varied between 86 MPH and 92 MPH, but primarily sitting in the high-80's with a drop off as the season progressed. In 2020, Jarvis saw the velocity jump to 92-96 MPH in starts and touching 97 MPH in pre-draft bullpens. The pitch is a low-spin offering (2,100-2,300 RPM), but has a high spin-efficiency and generates good armside life and rise. He's got good command of the pitch and confidence has grown in throwing the pitch in later counts. Velocity during starts has held well, sitting 93-94 MPH late into starts in the spring. Maintaining that throughout a full season will be key for Jarvis. Grade: 60

Curveball: New pitch, but has good feel for it. Sat 77-79 MPH in the spring and has touched 80-81 MPH in bullpens pre-draft. Oft-used, but is an effective pitch. Good shape and depth with spin rates hovering around the 2,200-2,400 RPM band. Could become an above-average offering with more usage and progress. Grade: 50

Slider: Much like the fastball, the slider has seen an uptick in velocity. A low-80's pitch in 2019, it sat in the mid-80's during the 2020 campaign and has touched 88 MPH. The pitch has late break to it that was his primary out-pitch in the spring. It's a high spin offering (2,400-2,650 RPM) with low spin-efficiency. As starts progress, the pitch can get a bit inconsistent, but has good confidence in the pitch. Has a chance to become a plus offering. Grade: 55

Changeup: Arguably Jarvis' best off-speed pitch. Good spread from fastball velocity, as it sits in the mid-80's with great fade to it. The offering has very high spin, averaging close to 2,000 RPM and has touched 2,300 RPM with it. It works great off the fastball, as the spin rates are in a similar band. This causes the pitch to look like a fastball out of the hand. Jarvis has gotten very comfortable throwing the pitch to both righties and lefties. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Jarvis's control improved with the stuff as well. He walked 59 batters in 123.1 innings prior to 2020, but came out and walked just two batters across 27 innings this spring. Whether or not that pans out in a full season is still to be decided, but it gives promise that his control will be an above-average tool moving forward. The command is just as good, as he commands all four pitches very well. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: After having one of the best springs of any college pitcher, Jarvis has proven to be a high-octane arm. He'll be given every opportunity to start with Arizona, likely becoming a backend rotation arm with a chance to become a #3 starter, but that will rely on the sustainability of his new stuff over a full season. Lack of track record brings about some risk. Will be a very interesting follow in this system.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man

Physical Description: High waisted athlete, with a still developing frame. Plays smaller than his 6'2" frame, but hope is he adds some strength and develops some power to go with some already strong all-around skills. Noticeably different frame from earlier in the season and his time at AFL. I'd bet he added 10-12 pounds of muscle to the frame.

Hit: Perdomo is a very skilled craftsman in the box, and if you watch him play everytime you will see something new in his setup or approach. Very loose in the box, hands always swaying, body rocking back and forth, staying loose. He starts from a wide base, with his front foot pointed inwards. For his trigger he barely lifts his front foot off the ground, but does bring it backwards as his load before striding forward a few inches from where he was originally. His hands are his best asset, and his bat-to-ball skills are very strong. It's a swing geared for contact, and he will make plenty of it. Contact percentages around the 85% mark in 2019. He finishes high, with that one armed whip like finish, with the bat pointing straight up in the air. He's a switch-hitter and is a much better hitter from the left-side. His right-handed swing is more of a slap hitters approach, and very flat. Perdomo has an innate feel for the strike zone and is constantly in three ball counts and making the opposing pitcher work. Can't tell you how many times I saw Perdomo go down looking on bad calls by the home plate umpire. His eye was simply too advanced for Low-A, and better than most umpires down there. If you factor the walk rate in with the hit tool it's an easy plus tool. Grade: 60

Power: Perdomo has bottom of the scale power from the right-side of the plate, but as a left-handed hitter he's starting to show flashes of a developing skill that can change the profile. He's never going to ever be a big power source, but he's going to have to be able to drive the ball. His average exit velocity at Kane County was around 81 MPH, but within a year he was up to 87 MPH in the AFL. The body has filled out some over the course of the season, and he was at the plate looking to do damage, as opposed to just looking to get on base like he had been earlier in the year. He had a sturdier base out in Arizona, was putting more of his weight on his back leg, looking to drive the ball. While in Low-A he would take a pitch and immediately follow it with a series of steps in the box. His weight was on his front foot. We're seeing a shift in philosophy taking place here and his 2020 season happened mostly behind closed doors, with limited eyes on him. That being said, I see Perdomo topping out around 10-12 homers per season, which if the rest of his game translates to the big league level, that's more than enough. Grade: 40

Field: Smooth hands, good actions and internal clock at short. Perdomo is a natural at shortstop and is the organization's shortstop of the future. He makes the flashy play look routine, and sometimes makes the routine play a little flashy, but it's all part of the package. The Diamondbacks had him playing some second base at Kane County in an effort to add versatility, which they've been doing with all of their prospects in the minors. He's a shortstop going forward though. He's quick and his long strides allow to him to cover plenty of ground. Moves to his left particularly well and has strong footwork Grade: 60

Arm: An above-average throwing arm that allows him to get more than enough on throws from the hole or shallow centerfield to first. It's an accurate arm as well, but will sail the occasional throw. Grade: 55

Run: Plus runner with long strides, Perdomo is a pest on the bases. Pitchers treat him as such as he routinely draws 3-4 pickoff throws per time on base, and is very aggressive with his leads. His caught stealing numbers can be a bit misleading as a large percentage of his outs on the bases were him getting picked off rather than thrown out by the catcher. So his stolen base success rate is much higher than it looks on paper. It is troubling that he gets picked off so frequently, but he pushes the limit with strong leads and I've witnessed him trip or stumble multiple times trying to get back to the first base bag. He also doesn't get out of the box very smoothly and I've seen him stumble a few times there as well. Body control is something he could work to improve. He's a plus runner though and should be able to steal 15-20 bases in the big leagues. Grade: 60

Overall: There's a high floor here due to the defensive value and borderline elite plate skills, but also some upside with the emerging power. I've seen Perdomo play in probably 40+ games and have a strong feel for what he can do on the field, and while I'm skeptical of his long term power output, there is no questioning the rest of his game.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2018 2nd
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong, but short and slender, Thomas has a compact frame. Not much physical projection remaining here, but he's very strong considering his stature. Was a three-sport athlete with a football scholarship to TCU before signing with the Diamondbacks for overslot. His dad is the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the White Sox.

Hit: Stands tall in the box with a slightly open stance. Active hands, waving the bat like a wand and will rest it on his shoulder before the pitch. Big leg kick as the trigger and has above-average bat speed. Will hit the ball on the ground a bit too frequently, but will use all fields. Holds his own against same-side pitching, but has feasted on right-handers thus far. Strong contact skills, with the time he spent in High-A as the notable exception. Will take his walks, profiles nicely as a future top of the lineup option. When he's going right he's hitting hard line drives everywhere. It's a plus hit tool. Grade: 60

Power: Thomas has put on some power displays during batting practice, and has above-average raw power. He's still learning to fully utilize it in games. It's a bit of a level swing, and he will pound the ball into the ground, limiting his power potential. Level swing makes him a good fit for the Dbacks as they will face many high spin arms in their division. A true line-to-line extra base threat, probably consistently sits around 16-20 homers annually, but while hitting doubles and triples at a high rate. Grade: 45

Field: The Diamondbacks prioritize versatility, so Thomas did spend a fair amount of time on one of the outfield corners. Don't be fooled by that though as he's an above-average defender in centerfield with a quick first step and can make the difficult look routine, especially when he's going back on the ball. Grade: 55

Arm: A below average arm, Thomas may be a better fit for left because of the arm. Grade: 40

Run: Thomas is a plus runner, routinely getting times around 4.20 from home to first. There's enough baserunning skills to swipe 12-15 bags a year and leg out plenty of infield hits. He's right on the line between plus speed and above-average speed, worth watching to see if he bulked up some more and slowed down at all. Grade: 60

Overall: Thomas is one of the most well-rounded prospects in baseball with a plus hit tool, plus wheels and above-average power and defensive skills. He's consistently been one of the youngest players in the league despite being one of the top performers. Thomas should hit for a strong average while contributing on both sides of the ball.

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Prototype body; looks like an NFL caliber wide receiver. Has room to add significant weight to frame. Currently high waisted with long limbs. Elite athlete with quick twitch. Very long strides and glides when underway. Thick thighs and rear end. Draws you to him when he steps on the field.

Hit: With long limbs and large frame. Elite bat speed and body control are his best traits in the box. It's unusual for a kid this young with a body like this to be fully in control of his body like he is. Quiet stance, w/ minimal movement. Everything is in sync mechanically, but he will expand his strike zone with two strikes, especially up. He has the difficult task of defending such a large strike zone, and there are still approach and swing and miss concerns. He's passive at the plate and will fall behind in the count at times. There were some major swing and miss issues with KRob at the alternate site, and reportedly it was to the point where it affected his confidence. Something to look out for. Grade: 50

Power: He has all fields power. In-game power is still developing, but it's a plus tool. Power comes mostly from the upper half presently. Learning to incorporate lower half in swing more. More line drives than high, towering blasts, due to level bat path. He's going to generate high exit velocities. Game power is future plus with raw power likely being a tick above. During the 2019 season his max EV was 114 MPH, and he average 90. 112. max during fall instructs, while averaging 89. Also improved his launch and added some loft. Future double-plus if the hit tool improves. Grade: 60

Field: He's moved around the outfield, spending time at all three outfield spots as the organization has done with all of their top prospects to increase versatility. He's a future left fielder though because he takes poor routes to balls and lacks feel on the grass. He's also likely to fill out and slow down as he ages. Grade: 40

Arm: Strong arm, he's improved throwing mechanics and moved from below average to average. Some accuracy issues in my looks, but there's enough carry and athleticism to get the ball in from the outfield quickly. Grade: 50

Run: Smooth plus runner with long, gazelle-like strides. Will fill out and slow down as he matures, but with his frame he should still be above-average at peak. Long legs and athleticism and can be a 15-20 stolen base threat once he learns the ins-and-outs on the basepaths. Grade: 55

Overall: It's a high risk but high reward profile and he could be a potential 30-35 homer bat with development. Needs some polish on the defensive side but with a potential bat like this that doesn't matter as much. Big, strong kid with all the necessary tools and has already hit full season ball at 18. He hits hard line drives but will need to generate more loft to fully maximize power potential. Future middle of the lineup bat.

Evaluator: Tyler Jennings

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 4th
RuleV: 2025

Physical Description: Big and very athletic build with long limbs and plenty of physical projection to his frame. Broad shoulders, as well. Also played basketball at East Troy High School in Wisconsin.

Hit: Right-handed swing that is triggered by a medium leg kick. Hands start parallel to his ears, with the bat wrapped around his head. Stance is straight, has quick hands and has improved swing consistency after having a more up-and-down swing plane last year. Drives his hips well. There is a definite concern about swing-and-miss potential, as the swing can get long, but reports from instructs suggest that he hit well. Will be an interesting bat to keep an eye on, especially if his contact rate rises. Grade: 40

Power: Vukovich has some of the best raw power of any player in the 2020 draft class. Generates great bat speed, despite having virtually zero load to his swing. Current pullside pop will grow into power to all fields as he matures physically. Swing has good natural loft to it. What holds back the grade from being plus is his contact rate, but it certainly is not out of the question that he could reach that grade at some point. Grade: 55

Field: Vukovich has played at the hot corner, although he likely will be moved to a corner outfield spot or first base. Moves fast for his size, and Arizona tried him out at the position in instructs and he reportedly has shown vast improvements in his defense. Athleticism would help him if he did move to a corner outfield position. However, he's likely to be a fringe-average defender. Grade: 45

Arm: There is good arm strength with Vukovich. In high school, Vukovich touched 93 MPH from the outfield and touched 92 MPH in the infield. The arm action can get a bit funky when he throws, which holds back the grade a bit. Likely to be an average arm, but can't rule out above-average in the future. Grade: 50

Run: With the athleticism he has for his size, Vukovich runs well. Ran a 6.8 60 yard dash in high school, which grades out to above-average. However, he won't be known for his speed, with added strength and weight to his frame potentially leading to a disappearance of speed as he grows. Grade: 50

Overall: While showing out at instructs after a dismal 2019 summer campaign, Vukovich has given a good impression to Arizona brass. The power will continue to grow as he adds more muscle to his frame, but questions about contact and being able to hit quality pitching certainly arise. Can't rule out a potential platoon role for him once he reaches the majors.

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 184 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 2nd
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description:
Gangly with long arms and legs. Ideal starter height with room to fill out on his frame.

Mechanics: Nelson is straight up with his back leg facing towards the third-base side. He begins his motion by dropping his glove hand and he has a moderate leg kick and stands still for a second before driving towards home plate. He extends his right-arm towards second and his glove arm towards home. He follows through with loose arm action and releases the ball at a high three-quarters slot. He ends up falling slightly towards the first-base side.

Fastball: Nelson in college had a fastball that would reach 98 but upon entering the professional ranks was sitting 93-95. The fastball has an elite movement profile that is best utilized when spotted up in the zone where the fastball rides up. There is no count that Nelson won't use the fastball and he especially likes to blow it past guys for strikeouts. While the fastball has ideal velocity and spin characteristics he lacks command of the offering, which at times causes the fastball to play down. Grade: 60

Slider: His slider comes at you from a high release point has above average vertical movement. Has 1-to-7 movement with plenty of late bite. He generates swings and misses with the slider especially when he can spot it on the outside half of the strike zone to both left-handed and right-handed batters. Grade: 55

Changeup: The changeup is thrown from the same high slot as the other two offerings. The changeup does not have the fade or movement one would expect and he lacks feel for the offering. He tends to overthrow the changeup resulting in the offering looking like a fringe fastball as opposed to a changeup that plays off his exceptional fastball. He tends to throw it low in the zone to avoid being crushed, his lack of feel for the offering and lack of command means it will be thrown into spots where hitters will make loud contact with it. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Nelson does an average job of throwing strikes, but has below-average command. He has shown the ability to fill the zone, but he doesn't know where many of his offerings are going. He did spend his college career split between being a position player and a reliever so there is some hope that the command and control take a tick forward as he focuses on just pitching. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: There are some days that you will watch Nelson and all three offerings are finding the zone and you can tell yourself that he may stick as a starter. However for the most part his inconsistent command of all his offerings leads me to believe he will ultimately end up as a reliever. He has three pitches and when he is spotting the fastball up in the zone it will be a dangerous weapon for him to get guys to swing and miss. He is a good athlete and has been focusing on just pitching for over two years now so there is some upside there. The Diamondbacks will continue to develop him as a starter in hopes the command and changeup can come along, but I ultimately think he could be transitioned to the bullpen where his fastball and slider are better suited.

Evaluator: Rhys White

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 165 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2019 1st
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Average height with a wiry frame. Not the most physically imposing athlete but has well-defined muscles in his arms and legs. Corbin Carroll is built similarly to a traditional NFL slot receiver.

Hit: Carroll has a simple pre-pitch set-up standing straight up with minimal movement. As the pitch is leaving the pitcher's hand he squats down, has a slight leg kick, and is short and direct with the bat. Carroll looks to hit the ball to all fields but is at his best when he is spraying hard line-drives in the gaps. possesses the ability to turn on a pitch inside and drive towards his pull-side. He has a level swing plane which will result in his fair share of line-drives. He shows great plate coverage with the ability to make consistent contact on pitches in the zone. He shows a plus understanding of the strike zone which will allow him to draw his fair share of walks. Carroll has a plus ability to read spin out of the hand, which allows him to not be fooled by breaking stuff. Carroll rarely strikes out thanks to his pitch-recognition and polished approach at the plate. Grade: 60

Power: Carroll has average raw swing-strength with plus bat-speed and a level swing path. There are some concerns on how he will be able to turn the bat-speed and swing-strength into over-the-fence power because of his linear swing plane. He does show average pull-side power from time to time. There is some slight projection in the frame and there are some swing-path adjustments that he can do to unlock more power. Grade: 50

Field: Carroll is a no-doubt centerfielder. He is equally adept at going forward on weak bloopers as he is going backward to collect balls hit at the warning track. Carroll reads the ball well off balls that hit off the outfield wall. He makes good reads off the bat and takes quick and efficient routes to the ball. He is able to move both to his left and his right to get balls in the gaps. He covers ground well thanks to his double-plus speed and has above-average range for the position. To go along with all of his physical gifts he has well above-average instincts which allow him to make the difficult plays in center. Grade: 60

Arm: He has more than enough arm for any spot in the outfield. His throws are accurate with good carry. He gets the ball in quickly to the infield when the ball is hit in the outfield. Grade: 55

Run: Easy double-plus runner. Underway Corbin is an electric athlete with a smooth stride and a good first step. He will be a stolen-base threat at the highest level because of his quick jump, his outstanding foot-speed, and his great feel for the game. If given the opportunity to run Corbin Carroll can easily surpass twenty stolen-bases in a full season, with the upside for more. Carroll's legs are an asset in all facets of the game, as a fielder in center-field, to help leg out infield singles, to go first-to-third on a routine hit, and as a stolen base threat. With his speed he is going to wrack up extra-base hits, extending singles into doubles and extending doubles into triples. Grade: 70

Overall: Corbin Carroll has the tools to be a very valuable big-league player with a long and fruitful career. He is a plus hitter who is a plus defender at a premium defensive position and will provide value as a base-runner thanks to his double-plus speed. To go along with Carroll's physical abilities he has a great feel for the game that will allow him to impact the game in a multitude of ways. The only thing holding him back from being a true five-tool player is the power projection. There is a top of the order hitter with the speed and hit tool combination to be one of the more electric hitters in the game of baseball.
