Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 187 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Listed size (5'10, 190) appears accurate. Lacks ideal height for the position, but well-built with a muscular chest and arms. Minimal room to add mass. Built like former Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge. Older brother Zach pitched in the Brewers organization.

Hit: Hits from a standard base, with a relaxed, upright stance. Moderate leg kick into stride. Showed a good deal of pre-swing movement in college, but quieter in pro ball. Hands start at ear level, with the bat vertical, before dropping to his shoulders and loading. Shows plus bat speed with loft. Average plate discipline, but struggles to alter bat path, making swings and misses common. At his best when using the whole field, but figures to be a streaky hitter throughout his career. Grade: 40

Power: Bat speed and natural loft help him drive the ball to all parts of the park. Shows plus power to the pull field. Ultimate power production will depend on hitting approach. Could produce above-average home run totals if he sells out for power to the pull field. Grade: 50

Field: Projects to be an above-average defender at the hot corner. Has soft hands and makes good decisions. Was a high-school shortstop, but his lack of foot speed and range pushed him to third. Does a good job of charging and bare-handing bunts or weak hits, and he has an above-average arm. Grade: 55

Arm: Shows above-average velocity and solid accuracy. Ran into some trouble in his pro debut by occasionally letting his arm angle drop on routine throws, resulting in balls that tailed or sank into the dirt. Should be a fairly easy fix. Grade: 55

Run: Below-average runner. Gets to first in 4.4-4.45 seconds from the right side. Fringe-average underway. Not a base clogger but unlikely to swipe more than a handful of bases in any one year. Grade: 40

Overall: Nick Quintana has the power potential and defensive chops to be at least a second-divisional regular at third base, but his future is heavily dependent on the development of his hit tool. His tough pro debut and the lost 2020 season make 2021 extremely important for him.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Colt Keith is tall and broad shouldered with a high waist. Added muscle to his upper body over the past year, but he still has room for more strength gains there. Thighs and butt lack mass but appear fairly well defined. Overall frame is reminiscent of Corey Seager. Above-average athlete who was a highly regarded youth wrestler and a legitimate draft prospect as a pitcher.

Hit: Sets up with feet just outside of shoulders and front leg slightly open. Keeps hands at ear level and waggles bat over shoulder, parallel to the ground. Minimal load, but employs a big leg kick that sometimes causes his shoulders to drift over the plate. Has plus bat speed and shows the solid pitch recognition and bat-to- balls skills to be a fringe-average hitter. Grade: 45

Power: Below-average present power. Hips and shoulders move in unison. Has some natural loft to his swing to the pull field but a flatter, more line-drive oriented stroke to the opposite field. Figures to get to average power as he fills out his frame, and could get to plus with improved hip and shoulder separation. Grade: 50

Field: Prep shortstop who lacks the hands and actions to stick there in pro ball. Has a chance to be an average defender at third base or in right field thanks to his athleticism and arm strength. Grade: 50

Arm: Owns a plus arm. Ran his fastball up to 93 in short stints as a pitcher, and really lets it go on the infield, using a high arm slot to keep his throws true. Arm would likely play well in the outfield. Grade: 60

Run: Turns in solid average run times. Gets to first from the left side in 4.2-4.25 seconds. Above-average runner underway, but likely loses a step as his body matures. Grade: 50

Overall: Colt Keith has an impressive collection of tools, but he carries the typical high-risk profile of a prep position player. He'll need significant development to his hit and power tools to reach his ceiling as an everyday third baseman or corner outfielder. His risk profile is mitigated ever so slightly by a potential return to the mound if things go sideways for him in the batter's box.

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 4
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Tall and lithe with long levers and a well-proportioned torso. High waisted with lean thighs. Workman is a graceful, athletic runner with an extremely projectable frame.

Hit: Switch-hitter who sets up with a wide base in a moderate crouch, while keeping his upper-body upright. Uses an open stance with a small leg kick that brings him back in line. Begins with hands at head level and bat over his shoulder, parallel to the ground. Pulls hands back and then down to load before accelerating through the zone. Shows above-average bat speed with natural loft and a high finish. Likes to get extended and sometimes struggles to clear his hips and get to inside fastballs. Shows a very aggressive approach and has pitch recognition issues from both sides of the plate. Projects as a below-average hitter. May be the sort of player who needs two full seasons in the high minors. Grade: 40

Power: Current game power plays to average. Shows above-average raw pop from both sides of the dish. Can go out to all fields if he gets his arms extended. Big exit velocities and projectable frame point to future plus power if he can refine his approach. Grade: 50

Field: Has all the ingredients to be above-average defender at third base. Shows good first-step quickness and reactions for the hot corner. Has the footwork and judgment to play himself into good hops. Smooth actions, soft hands and a strong, accurate arm. Currently capable of playing an adequate shortstop, but unlikely to maintain that ability as he fills out frame Grade: 55

Arm: Solid-average arm strength from both positions on the left side of the infield. Arm plays up a bit thanks to impressive accuracy from multiple angles. Grade: 55

Run: Fringe-average runner out of the box with heavy first step; 4.25 to first from the left side, 4.35 from the right. Has a good top gear and shows above-average speed when underway. Long, graceful strides. Grade: 50

Overall: Gage Workman is an impressive athlete with good tools and tons of projection. He stands out now for defense, but he also affects the game with his power and speed. He's still raw at the plate, and his future role is heavily dependent on both his physical growth, and his growth as a hitter. Has legitimate All-Star upside, but the gap between his floor and ceiling is vast. Most likely path to MLB time is as a four-corners utility man.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Tall, lean, and muscular. Medium frame. Looks a bit like a wide receiver right now, but big thighs and butt suggest he'll get significantly larger.

Hit: Average setup with legs outside shoulders, moderate crouch, and slightly open stance. Holds hands at ear level. Uses a short load and moderate jab step before rotating through the zone. Has above-average bat speed and swing shows natural loft with a high finish. Grade: 50

Power: Shows impressive strength, bat speed, and loft. Hits the ball out to all fields and could even grow into 60-grade pop in his prime. Grade: 55

Field: Originally a third baseman, Campos has moved to the outfield in anticipation he'll grow out of the infield. Has the athleticism and arm strength to be an average right fielder. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength. Still working on his mechanics and accuracy from the outfield, but should get to average. Grade: 50

Run: Impressive athlete for his size, with reportedly average speed. Likely to lose a step or two once he fills out his frame. Grade: 50

Overall: Enigmatic prospect with practically no game track record, but his tools, frame, and swing give him the look of a prototypical power-hitting corner outfielder.

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Thick, well-proportioned, and strong. Explosive athlete with big forearms and calves. Room to add more mass to his chest, biceps, and thighs. If he fills out with good weight he'll look like an NFL running back.

Hit: Sets up with a narrow base, with knees roughly one foot apart. Relaxed, open stance with hands at chin level and bat held up at a 45-degree angle. Uses a big leg kick and sinks his hips before whipping bat through the zone. Shows easy plus bat speed, but an aggressive, pull- heavy approach and pitch recognition issues may limit the utility of his hit tool. Grade: 45

Power: Plus bat speed, good trunk rotation, and strong wrists and forearms help him produce excellent exit velocity and plus power. Can take the ball way out of the park to left field and center. Approach doesn't lead to much oppo pop, but he will hit his share of line-drive doubles. Grade: 60

Field: A natural center fielder with the instincts and present speed to handle the position. Unlikely to be more than average there, and as he fills out he may be forced to move to right. Grade: 50

Arm: Shows plus arm strength with solid throwing mechanics and accuracy. Grade: 60

Run: Has plus long speed but it plays to above-average in games because of a slow first step. Likely drops to average once he finishes growing. Grade: 55

Overall: From a pure tools perspective, Jose De La Cruz has one of the highest ceilings in the Detroit system. He projects as a prototypical power-hitting right fielder, but there's a slim chance he retains his current running ability and ends up a power/speed center fielder. His hit tool is still very raw, and he'll need to improve his pitch selection to make it out of Low-A ball.

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Compact, somewhat boxy frame. High-waisted with narrow shoulders, hips, and backside. Muscular upper body and thighs. Solid athlete. Not maxed out, but added mass would negatively impact his speed and mobility.

Hit: Balanced base with a mild bend at the knees and an upright, slightly closed stance. Hands start at ear level and rock backward during big leg kick, then pop up slightly before pulling quickly through the zone. Above-average bat speed with a level swing and above-average bat-to-ball skills. Adept at using the whole field and driving the ball the other way. Grade: 55

Power: Swing lacks natural loft, but his strength, bat speed, and barrel control give him a good chance to hit for average power. Can go deep to all fields. Grade: 50

Field: Signed as a shortstop but he needs a lot of work to stick at the position. His hands and range are average, but his throwing mechanics and footwork are inconsistent. Likely grows out of the position, but has a chance to be a solid-average defender at third base. Grade: 50

Arm: Has enough arm strength to capably man shortstop or third base, though his accuracy needs a bit of work, with throws sailing on him at times. Grade: 50

Run: Not especially quick out of the box but shows average speed, running his 60s around 7 seconds flat. Body type suggests he could lose a full grade by the time he's 24. Grade: 45

Overall: Advanced hitter with power potential and the defensive tools to stick in the dirt. Unlikely to stay at shortstop in the long term, but owns the offensive profile to develop into a potentially average big-league third baseman in the mold of fellow Tigers prospect Isaac Paredes.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round CBA, ATL
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Looks the part of a big-league pitcher. Listed at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds and carries the weight well. He has broad shoulders, a well-defined chest, long legs, and the thick thighs and backside of a potential workhorse starter. Is a solid athlete who was also a draft prospect as a power-hitting first baseman. Has had shoulder and oblique injuries, and had Tommy John surgery in March of 2020.

Delivery & Mechanics: Wentz uses a simple, repeatable delivery. Holds hands at navel through rocker step, then brings glove to his neck and knee to his abdomen during his windup. Extends front leg toward left-handed batter's box before swinging it in line with the plate and firing the ball at foot strike. Small arm stab after hand break and high-3/4, almost over- the-top arm slot helps hide the ball and generate a steep downhill plane. Holds runners well. Gets the ball to the plate in about 1.35 from the stretch.

Fastball: Wentz's fastball was mostly 89-92 after joining the Tigers organization in 2019, occasionally touching 94, but he's been up to 96 in the past. The pitch shows above-average arm-side movement, while his high arm slot and above-average spin rate help him miss bats and generate fly balls up in the zone. Post-surgery velocity likely returns to the low-90s, but there's a small chance underlying arm issues caused his diminished velo, and the rehab process may help him return to his previous mid-90s heater. Grade: 50

Curveball: Sits in the mid-70s and shows 1-7 break but generally lacks depth. He can tighten it up into more of an upper-70s slurve that he back-foots to righties, but it's not clear if that's intentional. Pitch can be effective when he starts it in the zone and drops it into the dirt, but it tends to hang when he starts it up and tries to drop it into the zone. Grade: 50

Changeup: Wentz's best, most consistent offering. He maintains his arm speed well and the pitch arrives in the low-80s with good sink and fade. Consistently locates it low and away to right-handed hitters. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Wentz has traditionally shown average control with below-average command, though he pounded the strike zone in his short stint in Erie. Struggles to locate the fastball inside, but works the outer third well, and his misses tend to be up and away. Shows fringe- average control of his breaking ball but plus control of his change. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: Without a true plus offering, Joey Wentz lacks a high ceiling, and his 2020 Tommy John surgery adds a bit more risk to the profile. But when he's healthy, Wentz's fastball plays up, his breaking ball flashes, and his changeup is consistently above-average. Combine that with an ideal frame, and solid athleticism and control, and he has a chance to be a decent #4 starter.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Sports broad shoulders with a tapered torso, a muscular backside, and thick thighs. Still has plenty of room to add mass and strength.Unusually athletic for a catcher his size (listed at 6'3, 220). He played a solid center field as a freshman in college, was an all-state football receiver and safety as a high school senior, and both of his parents were college athletes.

Hit: Hits from an average base with feet just outside his shoulders and a moderate knee bend with an upright, slightly open stance. Sometimes keeps front heel raised with the ball of his foot planted. Employs a small kick and stride to bring his legs back into alignment. Hands rest at shoulder height and pull up during moderate load. He shows above-average bat speed and a slight uppercut swing. Possesses solid-average plate discipline. Tends to pull hands in and serve fastballs to the opposite field, but will turn on breaking balls and off-speed pitches. Grade: 45

Power: Above-average raw power plays to average in game. His over-the-fence pop is mostly to the pull field, but he can go deep to left-center and center. An opposite-field approach and solid-average speed may result in numerous doubles to the RCF gap. Has room to grow into plus power. Grade: 50

Field: Above-average defender behind the plate. Dingler keeps his glove quiet before receiving and shows soft hands. Is a good framer who will use one-knee setup at times and pulls pitches to the center of the zone with smooth, natural motion. Called his own games in college and leads pitchers well. Deadens body well on pitches in the dirt in front of him, but he tends to stab at balls in the dirt outside his frame. Shows a strong, accurate arm. Grade: 55

Arm: Plus arm strength with pop times in the 1.90-1.95 range. Above-average accuracy. Grade: 60

Run: Average runner who gets down the line in about 4.35 seconds, but has another gear when underway. Good instincts, but slow first-step will likely limit stolen base attempts. Capably takes extra bases. Grade: 50

Overall: Dillon Dingler has a good chance to become an average regular at the MLB level because of his well-rounded profile. His strong glove, athleticism, positional flexibility, and excellent makeup -- he was twice voted captain at Ohio State -- give him a fairly high floor, while his offensive upside could make him an All-Star in his prime.

Evaluator: Chris Brown

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Sturdy, muscular build; broad torso; thick trunk with large thighs; still some baby fat on his face; may be able to squeeze out a bit more mass, but likely done growing; more agile than expected given his size; good athlete who was a linebacker and running back in high school.

Hit: Hits from a broad base with a moderate crouch and an upright, slightly open stance. Relaxed in the box with a quiet setup; begins with his hands just above his shoulders; takes a small stride, coils his upper body, and shows a slight hand load before exploding through the zone. Takes a direct path to the ball; shows above-average pitch recognition; aggressive in the zone but rarely expands; will swing and miss at off-speed low and away in the zone; works deep counts and will walk at an above-average level; comfortable using the whole field. Above-average to plus pure hit tool that plays better because of his strong on-base skills. Grade: 60

Power: Borderline elite raw power; combination of bat speed, torque, and pure strength results in extreme exit velocities; steep bat angle leads to plenty of hard- hit fly balls; doesn't need to sell out to go deep; shows over-the-fence pop to all fields; puts the barrel on the ball frequently and should hit 30 or more home runs annually, with 40+ a possibility in his prime. Grade: 70

Field: Solid average defender at first base; displays a quick first step and above-average range for the position; moves well around the bag and presents a good target for infielders; hands are adequate; makes accurate throws; viable in an outfield corner; defense at third base currently a mystery. Grade: 50

Arm: Arm strength is average; enough velocity and accuracy to make the throws required of a first baseman; arm should play fine in left field; may be a bit light for third base. Grade: 50

Run: Below-average runner, but not a plodder; gets down the line in about 4.4 seconds; shows average speed underway and should leg out a few doubles and triples; good base running instincts could lead to a handful of steals, but running is unlikely to be a big part of his game. Grade: 40

Overall: Confident; leads by example; pitchers know he's in the batter's box. Spectacular production in college; strong track record with wood bats in the Cape Cod League and with Team USA help mitigate a large portion of risk. No injury history. Overall the profile carries moderate risk. Impressive combination of pitch selection, bat-to-ball skills, and raw power could make him one of the premier power threats in baseball in his prime. Unlikely to add much value with his glove, but shouldn't be a big minus on defense either. Probable All-star with MVP upside.
