Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 4

Physical Description: Tall and lithe with long levers and a well-proportioned torso. High waisted with lean thighs. Workman is a graceful, athletic runner with an extremely projectable frame.

Hit: Switch-hitter who sets up with a wide base in a moderate crouch, while keeping his upper-body upright. Uses an open stance with a small leg kick that brings him back in line. Begins with hands at head level and bat over his shoulder, parallel to the ground. Pulls hands back and then down to load before accelerating through the zone. Shows above-average bat speed with natural loft and a high finish. Likes to get extended and sometimes struggles to clear his hips and get to inside fastballs. Shows a very aggressive approach and has pitch recognition issues from both sides of the plate. Projects as a below-average hitter. May be the sort of player who needs two full seasons in the high minors. Grade: 40

Power: Current game power plays to average. Shows above-average raw pop from both sides of the dish. Can go out to all fields if he gets his arms extended. Big exit velocities and projectable frame point to future plus power if he can refine his approach. Grade: 50

Field: Has all the ingredients to be above-average defender at third base. Shows good first-step quickness and reactions for the hot corner. Has the footwork and judgment to play himself into good hops. Smooth actions, soft hands and a strong, accurate arm. Currently capable of playing an adequate shortstop, but unlikely to maintain that ability as he fills out frame Grade: 55

Arm: Solid-average arm strength from both positions on the left side of the infield. Arm plays up a bit thanks to impressive accuracy from multiple angles. Grade: 55

Run: Fringe-average runner out of the box with heavy first step; 4.25 to first from the left side, 4.35 from the right. Has a good top gear and shows above-average speed when underway. Long, graceful strides. Grade: 50

Overall: Gage Workman is an impressive athlete with good tools and tons of projection. He stands out now for defense, but he also affects the game with his power and speed. He's still raw at the plate, and his future role is heavily dependent on both his physical growth, and his growth as a hitter. Has legitimate All-Star upside, but the gap between his floor and ceiling is vast. Most likely path to MLB time is as a four-corners utility man.
