Nov 2020 Report
Evaluator: Jake Boes
Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2022
Physical Description: Tall, large frame; square shoulders with room to add strength through the upper body; thick, strong thighs and legs. Sturdy base; build similar to Ryan Ludwick. Dealt with a wrist injury in 2019. Dropped significant weight recently most notable in the face and torso; likely 10-15 lbs under list weight.
Hit: Slightly open stance on top of the plate from the left side; hands sit at the letters before reaching back for load; slight crouch with a wide base; average stride; front foot pivots with hip turn. Strong hip turn and quick hands yield above average bat speed; little wasted movement; compact swing and finish. Controls at-bats; looks for a pitch to drive early in counts but is comfortable deep in counts. Will strikeout on good spin; will hit to all fields with comfort. Grade: 55
Power: Loud contact to all fields in BP; will show flashes in-game. Projects as an above average power hitter thanks to large frame, raw power, and added strength with development. Grade: 55
Field: Fringe-average fielder; running ability and arm will hinder OF versatility. Fine routes; steady glove but lacks range. Profiles in left field or first base. Grade: 45
Arm: Below average arm; throws lack carry and will move cut-offs off line. Accuracy may play to average, but arm strength will require him to play in left. At first base arm would play more fringe-average due to carry being less requisite. Grade: 40
Run: Below-average runner; not a base stealing threat but instinctual on the basepaths. Will not take away gap doubles in the field. Grade: 40
Overall: One of the rare prospects in the org where the hit tool carries the profile; not strong defensively, but his approach at the plate and power will be what inserts him in a lineup. Packard is in the process of shifting to first base currently; a spot where his defensive ceiling is higher if his glove can handle the job. Power and patience combination are exciting offensively; improved running ability would help the profile play average, but additional gains in the upper body may prevent that from coming to fruition.
