Nov 2020 Report
Evaluator: Geoff Pontes
Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/L
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2024
Physical Description: Tall, lanky southpaw with long legs and a shorter upper body. Higher, broad shoulders that lack thick muscle. Stronger core though there's room for additional muscle.
Delivery & Mechanics: Up tempo thrower that will mix up timing. Higher three quarters arm action, crossfire finish, wraps his fastball. Drop and drive resulting in an average release height in the neighborhood of 6 feet or slightly under. NQuick tempo down the mound with an accompanying arm speed that suggests more velo may come with added strength. Noted gains in recent instructional league appearances, and added velocity. Needs to do a better job of getting over his frontside at release.
Fastball: Sat 90-94 mph at Clemson, but averaged reported velocity during instructional league was up to 94.5 mph on average. Gets a fair amount of lift and rise but less so than he did at Clemson, getting more run (-11 hMov) and over 26.5 inches of absolute movement on average. A reworked pitch that's improved velocity and overall movement. Ability to command the-reworked pitch is paramount, as it's borderline plus metrically, he needs to slightly improve his efficiency to gain more lift. Grade: 55
Slider: Weatherly's go to secondary, two-plane break, getting both vertical and horizontal movement. Used effectively to nullify left handed batters and right handed batters. Heavily used part of his arsenal as his changeup is used just 5% of the time or less. More sweepy than gyroscopic in movement around 50% efficiency giving more slurvy shape. Put away pitch at Clemson. Grade: 55
Changeup: Reworked his changeup over the summer, newer offering and it wasn't used with frequency during instructs, but it did show some positive traits, like 15+ inches of horizontal break. He does a fair job of killing lift, but is still learning feel and command for the pitch. Showing positive signs of an improved third offering, but very much a work in progress. Grade: 40
Control and Command: Fastball command remains a concern. It will be critical if Weatherly is to succeed at the next level. Slider is very good, but will need fastball to find the zone consistently for it to be the weapon it's capable of being against good hitters. Needs the ability to set up his put away pitch by getting ahead early in counts. Good arm and mechanics suggest better command could come. Control: 45 | Command: 40
Overall: A lefthander with improving velocity on his fastball, good movement, and a strong put away pitch, Weatherly has a chance to start, and much of his long term success may come down to his ability to do one of two things. Master the feel for his reworked offspeed, and gain the confidence to attack with it in game. Or he must improve his control and command to an average level. Weatherly has some quirks mechanically but he repeats fairly well, it's a matter of getting over his frontside more at release.
