Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 218 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall and sturdy right-hander on the mound. Has good size and length. Strong upper half, broad shoulders. Long arms and legs. Fairly solid build. Near full maturity, limited room for growth and muscle. Uses his lower half well in his delivery.

Delivery & Mechanics: Standard three-quarter slot delivery from the right side. Good mechanics and arm action. Simple and repeatable. Slow and methodical windup, glove reaches the top of his head before the pitch. Lower half incorporated in delivery.

Fastball: Low-to-mid 90s fastball with good late life. Has some sinking action low in the zone, creates soft contact. Sits 91-95 mph, has touched 95 mph on occasion. Gets nearly 11 inches of horizontal run in his four-seam. Above average spin in the 2350 rpm zone. Will get swings and miss on the pitch with consistency to right handed batters. Lands well to his armside. Grade: 50

Curveball: Low-80s pitch that needs improvement. Not thrown as much to his slider. Shows solid depth, but lacks consistency. Stays high and flat, gets barreled in the zone. Needs more reps and 12-6 movement for improvement. Grade: 40

Slider: Mid-80s offering with solid break and horizontal movement. Good tunneling to hide his fastball. Late break against righties/lefties. Forces whiffs and late swings. Gyro spin with average spin rates in the 2500-2600 rpm range. Go-to off-speed pitch, throws it with confidence. Above-average pitch with good velocity and break. Grade: 55

Changeup: Mid-80s changeup that needs development. Lacks fade and tumble. Stays firm, hangs in the zone. Rarely thrown last season. Good velocity when thrown, but lacks late movement. Additional reps could help development into fourth pitch. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Has shown above-average control with solid mechanics and consistency to find the zone. Spots his sinking fastball low and inside for called strikes. Uses his slider as an effective strikeout pitch. Rarely issues walks, stays in the count. Tendency to leave pitches towards the middle of the plate, and struggled with command overall. Lacks overpowering velocity, but places his pitches well. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Overall: A second round pick by Colorado in 2014, Ryan Castellini showed signs of consistent improvement during his big league debut last season. His fastball lacks elite velocity, but has good late sinking action to force soft contact. He complements it with a slider that has good depth and break. His changeup and curveball need improvement, but his above-average command masks his lack of raw stuff. With continued development, Castellini can be a potential back-of-the rotation starter.
