Acquired: 2019 Round 4
RuleV: 2022
Physical Description: Listed at 6-0, 190. Medium frame without much physical projection.
Hit: Low hands, wide base. Leg kick as timing mechanism. Short levers help him cover velocity despite average bat speed. Quick to the ball and has a strong track record of making contact at a high rate. Grade: 55
Power: Below-average raw power. Not particularly explosive; doesn't rotate all that well through the swing but has enough bat control to barrel up pitches and shoot the gaps for doubles. Grade: 40
Field: Fundamentally sound defender. Moves fairly well laterally and projects to stick at second base. Grade: 55
Arm: Sufficient arm to play second. Grade: 45
Run: Average runner. Fine athlete but didn't steal many bases in college. Grade: 50
Overall: Massey's a hit-first second baseman who put up a cumulative .324/.367/.485 line at Illinois and has been OK with wood bats on the Cape and in rookie ball. He makes contact but isn't physically imposing or especially toolsy. While he's a solid glove man, there's not much of a track record for collegiate second basemen moving up the defensive spectrum in pro ball. Massey needs to be at least a plus hitter to play everyday at the keystone given the lack of power.
