Physical Description: Lean, wiry middle infielder with twitch and flair. Rounded shoulders with a stocky core, but leaner levers. Explosiveness in athletic movements. Lacking impact strength. Switch-hitter with open stance, more open as a left-handed hitter.
Hit: Generally a gap-to-gap hitter that can handle both sides of the plate. More adept to impacting the baseball from the left side. Timing and foot plant can be an issue as a righty hitter. Just has a knack for putting the ball in play, finds barrels. Seems to produce more than the sum of his parts. Grade: 50
Power: More power from the left side of the plate. A bit of an ambush hitter in hitter's counts. Power is generated from loft and is almost exclusively pull-side. Beyond that, mostly a gap hitters. Lacks natural strength/barrel speed. Grade: 40
Field: Quick-twitch, livewire defender who gets to balls others do not on effort alone. Good range to his right and his left. Reliable glove. Arm is good, not great. Likely a second baseman at the next level. Grade: 55
Arm: Arm is tested constantly thanks to impressive range. Lacks velocity across the diamond. Internal clock can rush on him and throws can get away. Makes all the routine plays look easy. Some flash. Grade: 50
Run: Fantastic instincts on the basepaths and in the field. A grinder. Not a plus runner, but will steal more bags than anticipated thanks to good baseball mind and effort plus his ability to get strong jumps. Again, a guy that just outplays his total package. Grade: 55
Overall: Hayden Cantrelle is an exciting prospect for a number of reasons. He's got a lot of flash and flair thanks to quick-twitch motions and supreme instincts on the field. He's not the most gifted ballplayer on the field, but what he lacks in strength and explosiveness he makes up for in effort and smarts. He likely isn't a regular at the big league level, but the type of utility player that sticks around for a decade.
