Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 CBB
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Strong, thick frame that retains a little athleticism. Looks every bit of listed 6'1, 200. Maxed out. Big, strong legs and butt. Broad, muscled shoulders. Strong back, but room for weight in the chest. Built like a catcher. Soreness in throwing arm, April 2018; Arthroscopic surgery on throwing shoulder, November 2018.

Hit: Upright stance with the hands above the head and the bat angled flat back over the body. Slightly wider than average stance with the lead foot open by half a foot length and the heel off the ground. Nearly completely still, just a slight bat circle. Moderate, deliberate leg kick that comes waist-high and strides closed. Minor torso/hip coil. Hands drop sharp and late to the back shoulder before the swing. Quick bat, strong hands. Swing path has downward action to it; high finish. Heavy line drive profile with a few more grounders than fly balls. Aggressive approach, swings at most pitches in the zone, even on the first pitch; leads him to expand a bit. Borderline swing-happy. Swings very hard and overswings frequently. Whiffs often; mishits some he should square up. All or nothing approach and won't walk unless you make him, but when he makes contact, he blisters the ball. Grade: 45

Power: Plus raw power that comes from his strong frame and hands. Launched a ball well over the 24-foot wall in the opposite gap in Carolina. Swings very hard and looks to lift the ball which helps his power play in games. Would benefit from lifting the ball a little more, but isn't a groundball machine. Swing and miss and lack of selectiveness at the plate keep him from maximizing his pop. Grade: 55

Field: Calls his own games. Mixes between low crouch, one-knee, and half split stances. Typically stays in crouch with runners on. Average receiver; presents well but glove moves a little at reception on most pitches. Stabs occasionally. Some drops. Framing is fringe-average; could be a little smoother and could frame a little more at times. PIcks balls in the dirt confidently. Athletic behind the plate. Missed a year of development and it shows in his lack of polish; would benefit from electronic zone. Ability to stick behind the plate will depend on development in upper minors and team's tolerance for below-average catcher defense. Grade: 45

Arm: 2.01 and 1.94 pop times in game. Quick transfer and release aid solid arm strength. Generally on target. Grade: 55

Run: Runs decent for a catcher. Below-average home to first times. Not station to station on the bases, but not going 1st to 3rd on many singles either. Can leg out a triple when the outfielder boots it, but generally doesn't take an extra base unless it's gifted. Solid baserunning acumen, just lacks speed. Grade: 40

Overall: Power over hit, bat-first catcher who may struggle to stick behind the plate without further development. Swing-happy approach may get him in trouble with advanced pitching, but does enough damage to potentially offset high K-rates. Defense lacks polish but shows the building blocks of an average catcher. He's likely a fringe everyday backstop with a floor a once-a-week backup and ceiling of an All-Star who wins the Silver Slugger at catcher. Reminiscent of Gary Sanchez.
