Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Long, lanky, and athletic, body of a centerfielder with positive projection remaining in the frame. Should be able to add 10-15 lbs of muscle with little issue in the coming years.

Hit: Sets up square to the pitcher with slight bend in his knees, and probated front foot. Hands set by ear, closes off front side pre-load. Clean stroke, doesn't get significant drive from his lower half. Engages lower body with toe tap timing mechanism. Will swing early in counts, needs to work on approach at the plate. Raw bat to ball skills are above average, average bat speed, but poor pitch recognition leads to contact on the wrong pitches. Makes lots of weak flyball contact, best struck balls are screaming liners up the middle. Needs to add strength or improve potential inefficiencies in his swing. Grade: 45

Power: Good bat angle and optimized bat path leads to a high percentage of flyball contact. Lacks strength at point of contact to do damage at present. This lack of power leads to a lot of easy outs in the mid-outfield. The addition of strength or improved swing mechanics could boost this to an average grade in a year's time. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well in center, solidly average reads off of the bat. Has the makeup speed to handle the position and was sure handed across a dozen observations in 2019. Grade: 50

Arm: Fringe-average arm, enough to make the cut off throw but not a rifleman that will pick off runners at third from mid-centerfield. Grade: 45

Run: Home to first full effort in the 4.1 to 4.2 range. Shows the ability to cover ground in centerfield and has the makeup speed needed for the position. May lose a step as he adds muscle. Grade: 55

Overall: An average fielder and below average hitter with some projection remaining. There's a chance Montano adds strength and gets into his game power and pushes into a fringe everyday role. As currently constituted he's nestled between emergency depth and platoon outfielder. We'll lean the former until he can raise both his hit and power grades to average.
