Apr 2021 Report
Evaluator: Tyler Jennings
Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 5 (MIA)
RuleV: 2021
Physical Description: Strong build at 6'5", 220 pounds with a high waist and broad shoulders. Body is relatively filled out, though minimal projection remains. Former DII pitcher at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania, drafted by Marlins in 2018 and was traded with Sergio Romo to Minnesota in a deal that saw Lewin Diaz go to Miami.
Delivery & Mechanics: Works from the middle of the rubber and operation is triggered by moderately high leg kick from both windup and stretch. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Arm is up at foot plant, arm action/path is relatively short with good arm speed.
Fastball: Vallimont experienced a nice velocity uptick from high school to college, going from mid-80's to 92-95 MPH at Mercyhurst. Nowadays, the velocity can get a tad inconsistent, usually sitting in the lower-90's and touching upwards of 96 MPH at times when he reaches back. Pitch has plenty of late movement, with good rise and run. His command of the pitch has gotten better as he's progressed through the minor leagues, though refinement is still necessary. If he can get back into the mid-90's consistently, this offering will see an upgrade, but for now, it's more of an average offering. Grade: 50
Curveball: The latter of the two breaking balls in Vallimont's repertoire that is not as good as the slider, only flashing average at times. Hard breaking pitch, but some inconsistencies with it. Much like the slider, Vallimont has good feel for spin with the curveball, but refinement will be needed. Grade: 45
Slider: Better of the two breaking balls that Vallimont throws. Mid-80's slide piece with good depth and has some sweep to it. It'll need some tightening up at the next level, and the Twins are working hard to get Vallimont to throw it more to righties. Vallimont has good feel for spin on this pitch. Average offering. Grade: 50
Changeup: To round out Vallimont's arsenal, he's got a change-up that, much like the curveball, flashes average, though it has never been a consistent pitch. It was seldom used in high school, though he's used it more in pro ball. Has some good tumble and fade to it. Grade: 45
Control and Command: Vallimont struggled to throw strikes in his debut season, leading to a BB/9 near 8. He has gotten remarkably better since then, as taking out that debut season gives Vallimont as respectable 2.58 BB/9 on his career. He's got advanced feel for his entire arsenal and the control is average at best, though his command could use some work. Control: 50 | Command: 45
Overall: Vallimont has the four pitch mix and feel for pitching to potentially become a backend starter if refinement progresses well. However, he will need to show more consistent velocity and refine the secondaries. He could end up being a solid bullpen piece, with a good fastball and slider combo, but primarily in long relief with a chance to spot start.
