Physical Description: Long and lanky frame. Skinny build with room for added weight. Can add significant muscle to his overall build. Thin and narrow throughout his upper and lower half.
Hit: Low and crouched stance in the box from the right side. Bent at the knees; hands well above the letters with bent elbows. Activity in his lower half within his load. Heavy left leg kick; plants his foot with authority upon contact. Shows promising power, lacks a sound approach. Constant swing and misses remain a serious issue. Aggressive first-pitch hacker. Lacks patience, doesn't wait for his pitch or count. Barrels fastballs high in the zone. Struggles mightily off-speed in two-strike counts. Needs to tinker his swing and significantly calm his approach down to become a decent hitter. Grade: 40
Power: Shows strides in his in-game power. Heavy pull-side pop with a few towering blasts to left-center. Creates good lift and carry in his swing, still struggles with soft grounders. Attacks the gaps with hard contact. Carrying offensive tool with over the fence power. Lack of hitting ability hinders its true potential to this point. Grade: 55
Field: Plus fielding ability at shortstop. Glides all over the infield with crisp, subtle movements. Great insects and feel for the game defensively. Plays the ball well consistently on one-hop grounders. Makes up good ground with his athleticism and range. Soft hands and quick feet bode well for his defensive future. Grade: 60
Arm: Plus arm strength with great zip and velocity. Throws come out quick and effective. Good accuracy and sound mechanics. Solid arm strength and accuracy yield consistent results. Grade: 60
Run: Above-average speed with good strides and giddy up. Takes him a little bit to reach top speed, but long strides and aggressiveness stretch for extra bases. Good burst and acceleration out of the box. Can be more aggressive as a base stealer, scratching the surface of his athletic traits. Grade: 55
Overall: Javier's development at the plate needs to come to fruition in order to live up to his potential. Strikeouts and a lackluster approach has limited his production and power. He shows the ability to stick at shortstop long term with his plus arm and field. Despite his underwhelming performances and injury history, there's still a bevy of tools at his disposal. It needs to come together to see what he can turn out to be as a finished product.
