Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Thick core and lower half. Strong hands. Maxed out physically. High character kid who just wants to play baseball. Good bloodlines.

Hit: Open, slightly crouched stance from the left side. Hands stay out in front. Keeps his elbow back. Medium leg kick. Weight stays on the back leg. Above-average bat speed. Line-drive swing. Average eye and shows enough barrel control to fight off pitches. Displays a slight tendency to get under the ball leading to too many pop-ups. Can be overly aggressive at the plate and takes some big cuts as he clearly wants to drive the ball. Shows an ability to lay down a bunt. Tool can be average if he learns to be more patient and take what the pitcher gives him. Grade: 45

Power: Powerful left handed swing that is capable of driving the ball out of any part of the park. Ball jumps off the bat if he makes solid contact. Has so far been a high level extra-base hitter and his plus raw power began showing up more frequently in 2019. He has the ability to hit 25+ HR at the major league level Grade: 55

Field: Fringe-average receiver and inexperienced framer. Has some work to do with blocking balls in the dirt. Notably allowed several passed balls in looks, particularly on balls away. Handles velocity well. Can be average in time with additional reps and professional coaching. Grade: 45

Arm: Good transferer that quickly gets out of a crouched stance. Pop times between 1.91 and 2.01 depending on whether the throw is on target. Displayed a tendency to take the 2B off the base in brief looks. Natural arm strength plays down due to inconsistent accuracy but he was still able to throw out an above-average amount of baserunners in 2019. Grade: 55

Run: Moves well for his size. Quick initial burst out of the box from the left side but fringe to average straight-line speed. Timed between 4.18 and 4.26 to 1B depending on his jump. Hustles but there is some effort in his running. Has so far demonstrated an ability to get an extra base. Will slow with additional weight. Won't be a threat on the basepaths at the professional level but has enough situational awareness to keep opposing defenses honest. Grade: 45

Overall: Power is Naylor's calling card, and while he's still raw defensively, he possesses the tools necessary to stick behind the dish. He has the look of a future big leaguer, but whether he's a below-average catcher or an all-star largely hinges on his hit tool.
