Physical Description: Medium athletic build. Strong lower half and core. Broad shoulders with upper body filled out well.
Delivery & Mechanics: Stretch only. Comes set with his back leg slightly pre-set. High and tight leg-kick sinks him deep into his hips and heel connection/ankle mobility allows him to ride down the mound to create separation. Strong frame and an efficient high effort delivery generate good power. Quick over the top arm action, low release height, and big extension helps stuff play. Looks a bit clunky at times though mechanical sequencing is typically clean.
Fastball: Sits 91-94 and tops 97. Looked like he was closer to the top of that range this past winter for Escogido. Plus raw spin. Delivery and release helps lower VAA (vertical approach angle), making it play very well at the top of the zone. Generates lots of whiffs, though it will cut at times and get hit hard when it's down over the plate, especially when the velo is in the 91-92 range. Advanced metrics and results alike suggest it's an above average offering with a little room for improvement by minimizing cut/sustaining velo. Grade: 55
Slider: High spin offering at 81-83. Very good depth with a bit of glove-side movement. Works nicely at the bottom of the zone tunneling off the high fastball. Does leave it up in hittable areas but spin and movement have helped limit damage and generate weak contact so far. Another above average offering potentially capable of more with better command. Grade: 55
Control and Command: Average control but command is often a full grade lower. Could be due to the cut on the fastball and high spin on the slider. Likes to work over the plate and let his stuff go but could benefit from expanding up/down more. Will use either offering in any situation. Control: 50 | Command: 40
Overall: Wilson looked really good in the DR over the winter, taking over the closer role and shining with his fastball/slider combo. He was able to maintain his whiff rates while keeping free passes to a minimum, expanding on his solid 2019 campaign where he reached Triple-A. With plus spin and movement on both offerings, as well as improving feel, Wilson looks like he could be a serviceable option for the Padres' pen in the very near future.
