Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 174 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Long, lean frame with long limbs. Some muscle in the legs and butt already. Plenty of room for additional weight in the upper body, 15-20 pounds. Upside to look like an NFL wide receiver in an ideal situation.

Hit: Sets up with hands high, eye-level, and the bat over the shoulder with some rocking. Base is just beyond shoulder-width and straight on. Some bend in the lead leg. Mid-thigh leg kick used as trigger as he really sits into the back leg and coils, showing back pocket and numbers to the pitcher. Hands float back and down to shoulder. Gets good hip/shoulder separation. Steep bat path that can lift the ball. Above-average bat speed. Swing gets pushy and saps power. Tendency to overswing and pull off the ball or bail with the back leg. Recognizes spin during limited in-game looks. Struggles to barrel up the ball consistently. Likely to get exposed against good competition. Grade: 40

Power: Good-sized frame that should grow into above-average/plus raw. Bat speed above-average already. Looks to drive the ball; loft in the bat path. Pull-side pop only right now with gap power up the middle and oppo. Likely to grow into all fields power. Comes to the plate looking to do damage. Hit tool limits what he'll get to in game. Grade: 50

Field: Soft hands with good actions. A little awkward approaching the ball during fielding drills, but looked fine in game film. Strides are slow which will limit his range. Good chance he moves to 3rd as he fills out and slows down more, but looks to have the instincts and arm to play there. Fine for a corner OF if his 1st step proves too slow for 3rd. Grade: 45

Arm: Ball carries firmly across the infield. Plenty of strength to get zip on it while on the run or off balance. Will struggle to get into good throwing position near the end of his range. Hands are smooth and quick; gets the ball out fast. Should play at any position. Grade: 60

Run: Deceptively slow. Looks athletic, but strides and big and slow to turn over -- like he's not used to having long legs yet. Will limit his defensive range and impact on the bases. Closer to average underway, but needs a bit to get going. Projects to be below average at maturity. Grade: 40

Overall: Rodriguez looks the part of a future power hitter with a big arm that will play at 3rd or in right. There's plenty of power for 3rd or a corner outfield spot, but the hit tool will limit his ability to get to it in game. High end of the profile is an average regular with middle of the order thunder. Low end is a AAAA masher who doesn't hit enough to stick. High risk, high reward profile.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Draft - Round CBA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, physical frame. Sizeable wingspan and legs. Thick lower half. Reports of softer body in 2019, but much leaner in 2020. Some room left for strength in frame, but will have to watch how much overall weight is added to the frame in order to maintain athletic build, get into the positions necessary to repeat his delivery, and make the most of his frame.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works first base side of the rubber with mid-section high leg kick. Stays stacked in his midsection and creates natural hip hinge. Gets into drive leg and uses lower half efficiently. Has improved front leg extension over 2020 and also didn't stay connected to the rubber consistently in 2019. In limited video from 2020, showed improved upper body posture that has created better shoulder/hip separation and gets his shoulders square to the plate before he drags his arm through his three-quarter arm slot. Arm slot did appear higher at times in 2019 with the curveball and arm speed was slower at times. Will throw in delay leg kick from the windup to disrupt hitters timing.

Fastball: 93-96, up to 98 with late, riding life. Spins is well (2400 RPM). Locates the pitch well up in the zone and to his armside better than glove side. Velocity, spin and late life gets swinging strikes in the zone. Tough for right handed hitters to handle up and in and as it runs away from left handers. Doesn't throw it in on left handers as much. Overall command keeps it from being a double-plus offering. Grade: 60

Curveball: 73-75 with a 12-6 shape drop. Has shifted from a steeper drop as an amateur to a tighter break. Shows good shape and depth. Arm speed appears to slow down at a times throwing it. Effective at shifting hitters eye levels. Comfortable throwing it to both sides of the plate to left handers. Added velocity could increase effectiveness. Average command. Grade: 45

Slider: 77-80. Late vertical drop and three-quarter arm slot creates wide, sweeping action to make it cross the entire plate. Has looked too similar to his curveball at times, but started to differentiate shape in 2019. Tunnels well with fastball. Average command to both sides of the plate. Has shown comfort in backdooring the pitch to left handers. Grade: 50

Changeup: 86-88. Sells it with consistent arm speed. Shows promising sink and fade. Arm speed and fade give it the potential to be his best secondary offering. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Below average fastball command but in the strike zone with it and velocity/movement allows him to get away with mistakes. Changeup command is ahead of breaking ball command. Improved shape and flexibility could help him repeat his delivery better and improve his command Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Hankins has the build of a front line starter. Velocity as a prep was better before a reported shoulder injury. Hasn't had any reported injuries as a pro but velocity hasn't crept up into the upper-90s as expected. Worked into improved shape in 2020 and with better positioning and flexibility, that could come into play. Working 95+ consistently would be a game changer for Hankins in terms of his ceiling because he has below average fastball command and he can get away with misses in the zone with it now due to the life on it, but better velocity would give him a better chance to maintain that as he faces better hitters. There is mid to top of the rotation type stuff there but the consistency and command so far cast doubt on that ceiling. His fastball/slider/changeup arsenal give him the weapons to be an average major league starter and would work fine in a leverage bullpen role. His success hinges on his command and getting more consistent different shape from his curveball and slider, and shaping his curve into more of a power offering. Already physically gifted, Hankins is also a driven student of his craft and shows eagerness to take data and apply it to the mound to improve. Demands a lot of himself on the mound and is a fierce competitor.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round 16, SD
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Tall, lanky frame. Long legs and long arms give him an impressive wingspan. Some physical projection left thanks to the overall frame and his age. Athletic, well built and moves well despite long levers.

Delivery & Mechanics: Works from third base side of rubber. Uses the lower half well, could get into his back leg harder. Belt high leg kick. Stays stacked before loading into his delivery. Good extension with plant leg. Uses glove arm high into air and good balance/posture during arm swing to hide the ball behind his back leg and create a natural high, near over the top arm slot. Efficient, sequenced delivery that he repeats well and takes advantage of his wingspan.

Fastball: 88-91 t94. Below average velocity and spin, but plays more average because of his wing span, extension and release point. Gets swings and misses in the zone because of its deception and extension. More control than command of the pitch overall. Comfortable spotting it low and to his glove side. Better at working east-west with it than north and south, but needs to live on the black with the pitch with its velocity. Not a premium offering and not a pitch he should feature a large percentage of the time, but more competitive than velocity and spin would indicate. Potential for a little more velocity still remains. Grade: 45

Curveball: 69-71. Over the top arm angle gives it good direction and shape. Can throw it as a pitch to get ahead and steal strikes and get hitters to expand below the zone. Needs added velocity to increase effectiveness and bite. Added velocity to fastball that could translate to curveball can help it play up to average. Grade: 50

Changeup: 77-79. Uses a vulcan grip. Easily a plus offering thanks to ability to sell it with fastball arm speed and the natural drop on it. Doesn't feature much run or fade, but drops under hitters bats. Pairs with his fastball exceptionally well and is adept at burying just at the bottom of the strike zone. Comfortable with the pitch. Will double up on it and throws it to left handers. Grade: 55

Control and Command: Fringe-average fastball command at least working north-south but is in the strike zone with all three offerings consistently. Can lose release point at times on curveball which hurts command. Commands changeup better than other two offerings. Does not miss by much when he does and avoids missing over the heart of the plate. Control: 60 | Command: 50

Overall: If Cantillo only takes marginal steps forward from how he currently operates, he could have a big league future in the back of a rotation. Plus makeup, work ethic, intelligent and confidence. Cleveland is great at taking pitchers who look like back end of the rotation fillers at first glance and then turning them into something more. Cantillo very much looks like that if you're just watching the radar gun but there's more there. That his fastball is already a competitive pitch despite having fringe-average metrics, if he adds fastball and curveball velocity, both of those offerings will improve, and in turn can make his changuep more effective.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Solid frame with a muscular build. Filled out, not much room for more weight. Strong legs, round butt, broad shoulders -- almost look too big for his body. Appears relatively lean; certainly not skinny. Maybe not quite as tall as listed 5'11. Built like a 2B.

Hit: Switch hitter with a different trigger for each side. Left: Sits into back leg with moderate bend. Hands at the eyes with the bat over the shoulder, perpendicular to the body. Slight waggle. Torso stars with a slight coil. Uses small toe tap as trigger; very little additional coil, but gets average separation. Hands travel down and back to shoulder for launch. Right: Very similar to the left. May be his natural side, ball jumps off the bat a little more and the bat speed looks just a touch faster. There's some steepness to the bat path and a high finish on both sides. High effort swing looking to do damage -- pulls his head off the ball. Able to finish balanced despite the effort. Very comfortable in the box, even against older competition. Good idea of the zone and shows patience. Struggles to square some pitches he should drive. Package is below average right now, but has the talent and approach that track toward an above-average tool. Grade: 55

Power: Average bat speed and good loft will help maximize his game power. Frame doesn't lead you to believe much more raw power is coming without really packing on muscle, but he's going to get the most out of everything he's got. Looking at probably 15-20 HRs with a bunch of doubles in his best years. Grade: 45

Field: Solid average actions on the infield and decent instincts. Won't wow you, but will make the plays he should. First step could use work, takes him a second to read the ball which will keep him from making tough plays at the end of his range. Movements can get a little choppy and stiff at times, but usually smooth. Grade: 45

Arm: Limited looks at the arm, but it appears suited for lesser roles. Has enough zip for any throws at 2nd, but nothing that hints he could slide to 3rd should he outgrow the middle infield. Fringy defense and range don't help it play up at all. Grade: 45

Run: Clocked 4.17 H-1st from the left side, 4.33 from the right. Runs well underway but isn't always smooth getting up to speed. Movements are clumsy on occasion. Likely to add a little weight and slow down as he matures, moving him closer to a fringe-average runner. Any steals will come from baserunning savvy, not pure speed. Grade: 45

Overall: Bat-first second base profile describes Bracho well. Has the makings of an solid hitter with some pop in addition to fringy athleticism and defensive tools. The bat is probably a little light to profile anywhere else, but he shouldn't have a problem sticking at second unless his conditioning goes off the rails. There's a chance he fills out more and develops more power, but it would come at a direct cost to the little speed that he has. The development of his hit tool will ultimately decide his ceiling. If he's able to maximize it he's probably closer to an average regular. If things go awry, he's a below-average starter or a bench bat.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Russ Peters

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 215 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Stocky, thick, powerful legs, big arms, physique some would call "country strong." Not much growth projection left.

Delivery & Mechanics: 3/4 arm slot. Often works on first base side of the rubber, and falls off towards 1B when completing follow through. Very repeatable and consistent delivery. Uses effective timing, balance and body control. Keeps his body properly in sync throughout set up and delivery. Plant foot lands in the same spot repeatedly. Uses thick bottom half to create torque. Occasionally will mess with timing to keep hitters guessing. Somewhat violent delivery and lack of workhorse size that raises a few concerns about both past and future injuries

Fastball: Works 92-94. Tops out at 97. with some arm side run. Creates good angle on fastball down on hitters. Climbs the ladder up to a fastball high with rise. Commands fastball very well all over the plate. Consistently hits his spots both inside and just outside the strike zone. Command helps this pitch play up and elicit a lot of weak contact and ground balls. Has had issues with holding velocity as work load builds but this may work itself out with time. Grade: 55

Slider: At its peak this pitch sits low 80's with 11/5 curveball type shape. When off, it becomes an upper 70's loopy slurve. Needs to become more of a consistent offering. Controls pitch well. Used as effective out pitch versus righties. Grade: 50

Slider: 80-86. Harder version of the curve featuring nearly the same shape. Plays well off the fastball. Can throw it for a strike or bury for whiffs, but has a tendency to spike it gloveside here and there. Loses the bite at times and loops into the zone where it gets squared up, but not too often. A true weapon that can steal strikes or put guys away. Grade: 60

Changeup: 83-85. Fades with arm side run and used as an out pitch versus lefties. Flashes above average but inconsistent shape and command leave it a work in progress and a potentially average offering. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Ability to spot pitches. Fastball in the zone is one of Burns' strongest assets. Plus command of fastball and average command overall. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Three year starter at Auburn.10.0 career college K/9. Burns will not necessarily wow hitters with any one skill but he is average or better across the board. Aggressive on the mound. High floor type of prospect. Will likely be a quick mover in the minors. Durability and work load concerns still exist, but with some development in the change up and an increase in innings, Burns has the skills to be a mid to back end starter in the big leagues.

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-10
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Short and physically small but well-built. Has some room to fill out. Twitchy athlete. Emotional player that can translate to over-aggressiveness at times.

Hit: Nearly mirror image swings from both sides. Low, wide stance. Non-existent leg kick as he steps into the ball from the left side; small leg kick from the right. Hands stay out front. Quick wrists that generate plus bat speed. Line-drive swing. Tends to make better contact from the left side and looks more natural there. Ball jumps off the bat when he makes good contact. Demonstrates a slight tendency to overswing and struggles with velocity up. Shows a good eye, particularly on pitches away. Goes the other way on occasion. Has the underlying ability to see growth in the grade as he physically matures and learns to find his pitch. Grade: 55

Power: Average raw power. Has a line-drive swing, but he generates natural loft off the bat from both sides. Flashes mostly gap power at the moment, but his bat speed and physical projection lend itself to future growth. Could learn to create more leverage to better drive pitches. Grade: 45

Field: Good actions in the field. Moves well to his left. Keeps the ball in front of him. Average or better range but may struggle with plays deeper in the hole at SS given his average arm. Tools may play better at 2B, but no obvious reason to move him off SS. Grade: 50

Arm: Quick transferer and average arm strength. Makes the routine throws from SS. Grade: 50

Run: Plus times down the line from both sides; timed at 4.15 from the right side and 4.08 from the left. Capable of hitting a second gear rounding 1B; 11.66 home to third from the left side. Takes big turns at 1B. May slow with added bulk. Possesses enough speed to be a threat on the bases. Grade: 60

Overall: Rocchio has become the quintessential Cleveland prospect in that he is small in stature but carries a better than average hit tool. He has the tools to stay at SS and possesses some untapped ability with the bat. He's yet to hit full season ball, but will go as far as his bat takes him.

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 205 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 1
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Well built, muscled frame that matches his listed height and weight. Lean; big, strong thighs and a pronounced butt; shoulders are broad and the muscle can be seen through the jersey. Long legs and high waist. Very athletic build that wouldn't look out of place in another sport.

Delivery & Mechanics: Windup; Uses deliberate pace outside of a sharp, athletic leg kick that nearly comes to the shoulder. Easy movements, in control throughout. Throws from a med-high 3/4 slot. Moderate, but controlled effort and good arm speed. Long, winding arm action that shows the ball early. Good extension. Follows through in a controlled fashion, ready to field. Very similar from the stretch. Pays very little attention to runners, will get eaten alive by experienced base thieves.

Fastball: 93-96, T99. Arm slot lends itself to a little ride and a little run. Plays very well at the top of the zone getting plenty of whiffs. Able to find the edge on both sides of the plate but mostly trying to throw it by guys. Throws it early and often; Goes to the top of the zone when looking for a strikeout. Grade: 60

Curveball: 74-76. Big time 11 to 5 movement with hard bite. Can start it at the letters and still bury it in the dirt. Tunnels very well off the fastball and gives hitters fits. Inconsistent. Meatball when it gets loopy. Saw more loopy than tight.

Grade: 60

Changeup: Sits 87. More drop than armside run, almost straight down. Used sparingly. Good arm speed and spots it down and away to lefties where they swing through it. Grade: 45

Control and Command: A surefire control over command guy. He's firing his stuff at the zone and letting the velocity and movement do the work rather than location. That said, he can occasionally spot it up on the edge of either side of the plate -- just a few more middle/middle fastballs than you'd like. Misses often enough to pose serious relief risk. He will have to clean it up in order to remain a starter. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Espino's electric right arm produces pure filth, but he struggles to harness it enough to find the strike zone with regularity. The stuff alone is good enough for mid-rotation or better upside. He features a full arsenal with a fastball that really pops along with two average or better breakers, plus a changeup that shows promise. The walks and mistakes will be punished more as he faces better competition and pose a legitimate threat to his success. Repertoire would be a nightmare out of the pen, but still might be too wild to be an elite guy there. The talent is there for Espino but needs substantial refinement.

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2017 Draft - Round CBB
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Prototypical, athletic middle infield build. Strong forearms. Has added strength throughout his frame but maintained his athletic build.

Hit: Open stance, uses front good stride horizontal toward the plate to create hip hinge with a toe tap before taking a forward stride. Vertical barrel in stance. Quick load, especially with hands and weight transfer. Quick hands and hand-eye coordination lead to a high level of bat-to-ball ability. Shows natural barrel control. Contact over power swing and approach. Strong pitch recognition and knowledge of the strike zone. Grade: 60

Power: Line drive approach with above-average bat speed to drive the ball to the gaps. Shows the ability to match swing plane with his upper half. Has average raw power overall, however his swing and approach geared towards move line drives currently. Grade: 40

Field: Smooth actions moving to left and right. Polished footwork, hands and reactions. Technically and instinctively sound defender. Has average range overall but agility and effort make up for lack of range, especially going up the middle towards second base. Profiles better at second base long term but would be an average defender at shortstop. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm. Makes accurate, on time throws and his quick hands and transfer often make up for where his arm strength is average for a shortstop. Athletic ability allows him to make throws at angles needed going in every direction. Grade: 50

Run: 4.26 home-to-first time with rounding the bag. Stronger runner underway. Shows good instincts on the bases. Above-average runner who should add value on the bases through steals and taking the extra base with his instincts and hustle. Grade: 55

Overall: The cliche 'tools play up due effort and instincts for Freeman. Though he has some loft in his swing and has added strength, his pop is mostly gap power. Plus hit tool could be enough to profile with average defense at shortstop or above-average defense at second base with added value on bases. Excellent makeup, instincts, and high-energy profile boost each tool. Sort of a sum of whole parts better than one single tool. His hit tool will carry the profile, however, his approach is what will determine his overall offensive value. Though he makes a ton of good contact, his plate discipline has been inconsistent. His low strikeout rates are excellent, but his approach is aggressive because of the high contact rate and without being more selective as a hitter, he has to hit for a high average to buoy the overall offensive profile. He has shown the ability and approach to be selective with his hitting zone, but needs to do it more consistently. Either shortstop or second base, Freeman can be an average regular, though his defense long term is a better fit for second base.

RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Lanky, slender build. Undersized lower half, but better built upper half. Has struggled to add to frame and has plenty of room to add, but getting late in his projection for that to come around. Very large wingspan. Concern about frame holding up over long stretches of innings. Missed half of 2018 with a forearm issue and all of 2019 with a back/lat issue. Student of the game, extremely coachable. Excellent makeup.

Delivery & Mechanics: Long, chest-high leg kick. Excellent balance, pelvic stack. Keeps weight centered. Great torso/shoulder separation. Gets excellent extension with landing leg and keeps his arm back after his shoulders are square to the plate. Athletic and repeats delivery consistently. Stays on the rubber and gets good drive with back leg. Deceptive delivery due to arm swing. Wingspan and extension on front leg allow him to release the ball much closer to the plate to give him better perceived velocity.

Fastball: Runs 92-95 and can hit 97. Plays up beyond velo because of wingspan and release to increase perceived velocity. Some arm side run. Above-average command with it. Gets swings and misses with it inside of the zone. Does not have plus spin. Occasionally he will struggle to maintain velocity later into his outings, or game to game He has seen his fastball dip consistently down to 89-91 in outings overall, but it remains a good pitch. Grade: 55

Curveball: Works 79-81 with 11-5 shape. Does not feature plus spin but release point and break make it an effective pitch when combined with above average command of the pitch. Grade: 60

Slider: New pitch for him in 2020. Also features below-average spin. Works 85-86 and has good late, sharp break. Mirrors his fastball well and throws it from a close release point. Inconsistent throwing it for strikes. More of a chase pitch for him right not to get hitters to expand their zone with two strikes but flashes above-average overall with fringe-average command Grade: 50

Changeup: 85-87 with below-average vertical and horizontal break. Backs up like a two-seamer at times, flashing average fade. Effective offering against left-handers with fringe-average command Grade: 45

Control and Command: Hits the glove with fastball and able to command secondary offerings with above-average ability. Can hit all corners of the strike zone with the fastball and curveball. Aggressive in the zone and works ahead. Control: 60 | Command: 55

Overall: Starters arsenal with two plus pitches and two average to fringe-average offerings and overall above-average command. Athleticism, clean delivery makes it easy to repeat. Stuff, command, mechanics, pitchability and makeup give him all the makings of a mid-rotation upside arm. Undersized build, recent injury history and drops in velocity give concern about holding up as a starter. Build is somewhat similar to Carl Edwards Jr. The durability concerns and peaks and valley's in his velo make it hard to project that he can be a consistent rotation member, even though he has the talent. I'd also question his body holding up pitching on back to back days out of the bullpen until we see more consistent durability. MId-rotation/high leverage talent is extremely apparent in pure stuff/command, but the body and track record of durability are too big of red flags to say that with any certainty.

Physical Description: Thick core and lower half. Strong hands. Maxed out physically. High character kid who just wants to play baseball. Good bloodlines.

Hit: Open, slightly crouched stance from the left side. Hands stay out in front. Keeps his elbow back. Medium leg kick. Weight stays on the back leg. Above-average bat speed. Line-drive swing. Average eye and shows enough barrel control to fight off pitches. Displays a slight tendency to get under the ball leading to too many pop-ups. Can be overly aggressive at the plate and takes some big cuts as he clearly wants to drive the ball. Shows an ability to lay down a bunt. Tool can be average if he learns to be more patient and take what the pitcher gives him. Grade: 45

Power: Powerful left handed swing that is capable of driving the ball out of any part of the park. Ball jumps off the bat if he makes solid contact. Has so far been a high level extra-base hitter and his plus raw power began showing up more frequently in 2019. He has the ability to hit 25+ HR at the major league level Grade: 55

Field: Fringe-average receiver and inexperienced framer. Has some work to do with blocking balls in the dirt. Notably allowed several passed balls in looks, particularly on balls away. Handles velocity well. Can be average in time with additional reps and professional coaching. Grade: 45

Arm: Good transferer that quickly gets out of a crouched stance. Pop times between 1.91 and 2.01 depending on whether the throw is on target. Displayed a tendency to take the 2B off the base in brief looks. Natural arm strength plays down due to inconsistent accuracy but he was still able to throw out an above-average amount of baserunners in 2019. Grade: 55

Run: Moves well for his size. Quick initial burst out of the box from the left side but fringe to average straight-line speed. Timed between 4.18 and 4.26 to 1B depending on his jump. Hustles but there is some effort in his running. Has so far demonstrated an ability to get an extra base. Will slow with additional weight. Won't be a threat on the basepaths at the professional level but has enough situational awareness to keep opposing defenses honest. Grade: 45

Overall: Power is Naylor's calling card, and while he's still raw defensively, he possesses the tools necessary to stick behind the dish. He has the look of a future big leaguer, but whether he's a below-average catcher or an all-star largely hinges on his hit tool.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Body has begun to fill out since being listed at 160 pounds. Would guess closer to 180 now. Solid frame with long limbs and high hips despite not being tall (only 5'10). Legs and butt have filled out in the last couple of years. Strong, but still athletic. Not much room on the frame for more weight at this point.

Hit: Sits moderately into back leg with lead leg stretched at full length and open by 1.5 foot lengths or so. Torso is upright with shoulders perpendicular to the pitcher with the hands neck-level and bat resting on the shoulder. Loads with minor leg kick just above the back knee, bringing lead leg back under the lead hip. Bat and hands come to life with big waggle. Moderate coil at hips. Hands slide back and down to chest level at launch position. Swing plane is just above flat, allowing him to stay in the hitting zone for a while and still lift the ball. Pretty low-effort swing that generates easy pop allows for solid barrel control. Stays in control without sacrificing power. Poor swing decisions lead to some bad contact; discipline and zone awareness need work. Has some swing and miss issues and doesn't always square up pitches he should punish. Building blocks are there for an average hit tool, but currently well below-average. Grade: 45

Power: Quick, strong hands generate Above-average bat speed and combined with lofted swing path give Valera a good chance to hit for above-average power in games. Plus raw power. The swing is relatively low-effort, but he makes hard contact and the ball jumps off his bat. Plenty of pop for all fields power and can stretch singles into doubles with his legs right now Grade: 55

Field: AA speed gives him good range, but reads and routes look below average in limited looks. Good burst when he locates the ball. Doesn't do all the little things yet, caught flat-footed occasionally. Could probably play center in a pinch, but much better suited for a corner. Grade: 45

Arm: Wasn't able to see the arm at full force during limited looks, but multiple reports list it at above-average. Should be enough to pass for RF, especially as he learns to get himself in better positions to throw. Grade: 55

Run: Moves well. Accelerates quickly and has good top end speed with long strides that turn over well. Clocked a 4.15 H-1st. Aggressive baserunner who can time a good jump when stealing a base, but still needs refinement. Should be a threat for 10-20 steals at the top level. Grade: 55

Overall: Valera brings an exciting package to the table with multiple above-average tools. The hit tool is quite raw at the moment due to weak feel for the strike zone and poor swing decisions, but as he improves there his plus raw power and AA speed will really begin to shine. The ball explodes off his bat despite his easy swing -- when he makes contact, it's loud. His strong arm and solid defense make him a good candidate for RF and he undoubtedly has the bat to fit the corner OF profile. He has work to do to get there, but Valera is currently tracking to be an impact player who can anchor a lineup.

Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Justin Lada

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Tall, filled out, and well built. Looks the part. Big, physical presence on the diamond and in the batter's box. Broad shoulders, strong build throughout. Former hockey player. Better athlete than size might indicate.

Hit: High hands, with a horizontal barrel. Uses moderate let kick to close off and rotate hips in. Shows good pitch recognition and works counts. Uses hands to get barrel and bat into position. Some length in swing due to longer arms and deep hand load. Does have swing and miss in the concerns in the zone, but limits how much he chases. Platoon splits against lefties may limit overall offensive impact. Strikeout rate reflects working deep counts and some in zone swing and miss. Grade: 45

Power: Consistently drives the ball with authority. Shows strength and approach to drive the ball to all fields, especially to left-center as he lets the ball travel deep. Contact authority was on the ground to pull-side early in 2019 but in later looks after his bump to Double-A, he began to show more contact authority again to call fields, in the air. Grade: 60

Field: Footwork has improved to be average. Shows good reactions. Comes in on grounders well but overall range is below average despite athleticism. Grade: 45

Arm: Strong carry on throws from deep on the dirt. More than enough carry on a line and average accuracy. Double-plus on arm strength alone. Grade: 70

Run: Athleticism not reflected through speed. Timed him 4.38 home-to-first and is generally the same type of runner underway. Speed will not improve with the sheer size of his frame Grade: 30

Overall: Despite his physical size, Jones is a good athlete and has put in a massive effort of work to develop into a better defender at third base. He was a shortstop in high school and played hockey. Improving his footwork was a big key in improving his defense, and while it has come a long way, he's still going to end up fringe-average as a defender at the hot corner. Has the arm to play in a corner outfield position, where he worked out in Fall Instructs and will likely continue to get work at. His arm would be wasted at first base, but he's also worked there as well. Defense aside, his power and approach are his carrying tools. He shows the command of the strike zone and pitch recognition to be selective in his swing offerings and will carry a high on-base percentage as a result. His raw power hasn't completely materialized in games, but strength and contact authority show he has the kind of power to have the kind of bat that will make him an average regular at third base and a corner outfield position. Very strongly a three-true-outcomes type hitter who has platoon split issues against left handers but plate discipline and ability to drive the ball to the opposite field will allow him to be competitive against southpaws.
