Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Isaiah Burrows

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 189 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA (ATL)
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Thin and wiry frame. Good size to his upper half. Thick waisted with square shoulders. More room for added weight and physical projection.

Hit: Upright switch-hitting stance in the box with little movement in is upper half. Hands stay just above the letters; legs shoulder width apart. Cranked elbows and slight movement pre-pitch. Big leg kick to the belt in his load, active hips turn and bleed pull-side. Has quick hands and noticeable power, struggles to connect. Has tightened his approach at times, but still swings for the fences. Heavy uppercut hacks. Needs to rely more on consistent contact and stabilize his swing path. Grade: 40

Power: Shows glimpses of raw power from both sides. Quick hands and physical traits make hard contact to the gaps. Still lacks consistent over the fence pop. Potential for power increase as he physically matures. Lack of approach still leaves his power to be desired. Grade: 50

Field: Shows above-average defensive skills at second base. Good quickness and range, knows when to play the ball. Solid awareness around the infield. Has the ability to stick at second base long term; lacks the tools and athleticism at shortstop. Grade: 55

Arm: Average arm strength that lacks zip and accuracy. Throws get away from him and sail over the heads of first basemen occasionally. Has shown strides in his arm strength, but still needs more reps for improvement. Grade: 50

Run: Fringe-average speed as he grows into his frame. Good hustle and burst out of the box, lacks top-end speed. Good strides and quickness aid him defensively, may not translate to many stolen bases at the next level. Grade: 45

Overall: Severino has the potential to grow and maximize his physical tools, but injuries and his lack of hit tool has held him back. He has a heavy swing that doesn't make solid contact while limiting his power output. Defensively, he has some tools to be a fringe-average defender at second base. For him to rise up Minnesota's ranks, he needs to hit.
